My parents took me every Sunday to First Baptist Church of Pensacola. What they were preaching never made sense to me, but those people were very nice. Our house was gutted by fire while we were at church not long before my 8th birthday. We had to live in a rented cottage at the beach while our house was being rebuilt. The people of the church were worried that I had suffered some kind of emotional trauma from the ordeal of being displaced from my home, so they threw me a huge birthday party and gave me a ton of toys. I couldn't figure it out because I wasn't traumatized at all. I was having a blast at the beach, and even when we first got home to see the firemen salvaging what they could from our house, it felt like an exciting adventure. All the neighborhood kids were there to see the spectacle so I started playing with them in the yard, I knew my dad had our backs so I was unconcerned. It was hard on my mom though, she was crying her eyes out because she designed that house. The good news was she got to add a few new features, so the rebuilt house was even better than before. I'll never forget the kindness of the people at my church though. That was super nice of them, so even though we disagree on how the universe works, they still have my respect!
