Inside China's $1.5 Trillion Dollar Smart Cities

China is stepping up its drive for global leadership in new technologies, with plans to invest more than $1 trillion in the economy by introducing everything from wireless networks to artificial intelligence (AI).
In a master plan backed by Chinese President Xi Jinping, Beijing intends to invest approximately US$1.4 trillion over the next six years, calling on city governments and private tech powerhouses such as Huawei Technologies to lay 5G wireless networks, install cameras and sensors, and develop AI software that will underpin everything from autonomous driving to automated factories and mass surveillance.
The new infrastructure project is likely to mostly benefit Chinese enterprises, ranging from Alibaba Group Holding Ltd and Huawei to SenseTime Group Ltd, at the cost of US companies.
