    I must apologize for the sound on this video. It is a bit up and down and the wind was terrible. While I wanted you to hear the wind, it did make it hard to hear us sometimes. Hi! I'm An Scott. I'm a happily retired 70 year old woman with my “golden years” on the horizon, living the “good life”, whatever that is on any given day, with my fun husband Jeff, and our “bossy” little Yorkie, Bella.
    We have recently moved from the USA to the beautiful south of France and made our new home in Nice France. Moving from the USA to a foreign country is no small “project”. Through my videos, we’ve been taking you through the process, sharing the steps, talking about what we’ve learned and the ups and the downs. And now, we continue to share our life, our new life, here in Nice, getting settled, adjusting to the “French” way of doing things, dealing with the French “red tape” and all the while, making every wonderful day in Nice, the best day ever…

    The "ugly" tomatoes are actually a variety called "heirloom" tomatoes. They come in several colors - red, yellow, orange, green - and are best eaten raw on sandwiches or salads rather than cooked. More flavorful than a beefsteak, roma or tomato-on-the-vine variety.

    Jeff & An how I loved watching this video. I enjoyed it so much watching you two going places around Nice, the bagel adventure, dining out, the market (loved seeing what fruits and vegetables are in season and their prices). Most of all I loved loved that you did not mask the sounds with music, but allowed us to hear the sounds of Nice: people talking in restaurants and on the streets, the wind blowing, and the liveliness of the city. Hearing those sounds makes us feel as if we were right there with you. And Happy Birthday Jeff. Wishing you many many more healthy ones!!

    Heirloom tomatoes are by far the best tasting tomatoes. The yellow ones have less acid than the red. More expensive but worth it

      You may laugh but this particular bagel shop in Naples, called "Brooklyn Dough with a hole" has excellent bagels, as close as I have ever gotten to a NY bagel in my 20 years living in Florida, without going there. If you're in Naples, check them out. Excellent bagels 🥯

    Thanks so much for sharing - looks like you're really settling in! FYI, the photo of the man under the Statue of Liberty is Alexi Navalny, Vladimir Putin's political rival who was imprisoned and recently murdered by Putin's regime. It was heartwarming to see him honored in Nice...

    Happy anniversary ! Nice vlog. But be careful when filming people, we have a law here called " droit à l'image" ( same as most EU countries). You should have the explicit authorisation to film someone even in public space, like the guy in the bagel restaurant, authorisation for filming and for publishing on internet.

    Even if you've only recently settled in, you're probably starting to develop certain habits, like food shopping for example. When I moved to a champagne-producing region, I picked up some new habits and started drinking champagne on a much more regular basis, whereas before it was reserved for very special occasions. The United States is a major wine producer. What is your wine culture like? And do you think it might change after you move here, given that prices here are really quite low, and you can find everywhere and a lot of choice, including American wines.

    • @postcardsfromourgoldenyears
      @postcardsfromourgoldenyears  Месяц назад +1

      I don't think our food habits are changing. Not mine, anyway. I am technically a gourmet cook and have been most of my adult life. I used to do fantastic dinner parties for friends and family with lots of courses, and wonderful food. And years ago, I even owned my own little French bistro type restaurant, in PA, showcasing my recipes, for a year. I've always strived to eat the healthiest, finest foods, high in quality, Moving to France simply kicks up what's available to us, a notch. So it's not a new habit. Appreciation of good food has always been a part of who I am. I don't know what you mean by "what is my wine culture like"? I have always appreciated fine wines and champagne as well. Back in the early days of the Internet, actually before there was what we call a "world wide web" (www), I used to do wine tastings online with people from all over the world. We'd sign into a network at a specific time, having purchased the wines we'd be tasting that night, and drink wine and chat about them, using a "chat screen", And I've traveled to some of finest wine regions in the world, from Napa and Sonoma, back in the US, to the Finger Lakes in NY, to the bordeaux region of France and all through Tuscany in Italy, I don't think my appreciation for good wine has changed, at all. Many years ago I found that here in France one doesn't have to spend a lot of money to get a good bottle of wine, I used to spend 3 francs (back before Euros) for a bottle of wine we picked up in the grocery store, get a baguette and some cheese and make lunch out of it in a field of daisies. These days, I am drinking less wine, mostly because I've been taking a medication that has some unsatisfactory side effects if I drink a lot of alcohol. I learned that to keep the side effects and calories down, I "should" stick to prosecco, but these days I'm having lots of roses and other wines, both red and white, from all over France. Incidentally, many of the wines I had in the US were purchased here in France and a few brought back in our suitcases, when we moved. They were too good to leave behind--a couple actually acquired, in my favorite wine area in the world, St, Emilion, here in France. I wasn't leaving them in the US, While in past years, I would have no problem having wine with lunch and again at apero and dinner, now I may have 1 glass of wine every few days at either lunch or dinner. I try to make it a good wine. I know there are lots of great US wines, but we're living in France now. I believe this is where we'll find the finest wines in the world. My reduction in the consumption of wine has more to do with my health, these days, than the availability of great wine.

    Thank you An and Jeff for this upload. You guys look so happy and content to be living your best lives in beautiful NICE. Hopefully, we'll be thee in Sept. for around 12days. As for the bagel, I've yet to find anyplace outside of NYC where you can actually get a decent bagel; bagels should be dense and chewy and a lot of folks think a round bread with a hold in the middle is a bagel. We miss NYC bagels because we lived in NYC for over 30yrs. So, enjoy the croissants...you're in the right place! Little Bella looks very contented to be with her people. The food looks delicious. I love the market and all the lovely flowers, fruits and veggies. Heirloom tomatoes are great with bagels, cream cheese and smoked salmon.

      We did actually have a great NY bagel place when we lived in Naples Florida. Our expectations for find anything close to any freshly baked bagels 🥯 we ever ate in the US, are low. Here, they are shaped like bagels and that's where the similarity ends. That's OK. Lots of great baguettes and croissants to enjoy. If I want a NY bagel badly enough I'll order them online and find a place in NY that'll ship them. 👌😊

    Merci for this adventure in everyday life in Nice. I hope to see you there in July! I googled my hotel and this walk was not far! I would love to hear your actual transactions in French at the market or did she speak English? I am taking Babbel French now and can only say a few basics. Au Revior mon amis

    • @postcardsfromourgoldenyears
      @postcardsfromourgoldenyears  Месяц назад

      It's very busy and noisy at the market when we go. I tend not to film the conversation because there is very little and I prefer not to point the camera in the seller's face. One word here, one word there and 99.9% of the time I am the one shopping and shooting video. I prefer not to try to directly film the people I'm talking to. Occasionally my husband will shoot some video from the side, but not close enough to hear conversation. Basically you point to what you want and say how many you want. They bag it and tell you the price, in French or if they think you don't understand they will say it in English. Best to keep working on your French. My husband is using Babbel too and tends not to feel comfortable enough yet to order things at the market. He let's me do the talking.

    • @MauiJOY
      @MauiJOY Месяц назад

      @@postcardsfromourgoldenyears That is very understandable and very kind of you to be discreet while filming too. It didn't look like it was too difficult to get what you wanted. How is your French coming along?

      @MauiJOY My French is fine. I studied in school for 8 years and in general conversations have no major issues. I may not understand everything someone else is saying but I ask them to repeat it or I tell them I don't understand, in French. I am not concerned. I have been speaking French for many years

    • @postcardsfromourgoldenyears

      No, not really. We are finding our way ourselves and/or by doing research online. I already do an advanced French class online. Jeff uses Babbel. We are quite comfortable on our own. We feel we are assimilating well without assistance. We're still busy furnishing and decorating our apartment and taking care of validating our Visas, doing the steps to exchange our driver's licenses and getting settled, learning our way around and socializing with some new friends. I'm not sure what other services we will require at this point. All TBD. Not something we feel we need at the moment.

      Yes! We consulted with them initially and used them to find our apartment in a very tough rental market. They have lots of contacts with landlords and management companies and may even know of available rentals before they are advertised. We did everything else related to our move and setting in, ourselves. Definitely recommend using Adrian Leeds for as much or as little help as you need.

    🍎An and Jeff,
    Fabulous sunny day in our part of the world! Same for you? We would love to hear more of your husband's voice especially when he's sitting beside you on your vlogs. You seem to want to control the conversation if you don't let him talk at least for a minute or two when explaining something. Don't try to cut him off as it shows in your expression and his expression. We know who wears the pants in your relationship, but if you put him in the conversation more, then you won't look so controlling and selfish, but more considerate and caring about what he has to say. Even though it's your vlog, he can explain just as good as you can and it doesn't become so monotonous hearing only your voice. That's the honest truth. Someone has to speak up for him, maybe it takes a stranger.
    The name of your vlog says Golden Years, but if I had to say it, I would say Our Diamond Chandelier Years! Speaking about diamonds, your anniversary necklace is cute because it's tiny. I would rather much bigger diamonds because it's more appealing and interesting and you can literally see the precious stones. A lot of diamonds on the market today are lab created diamonds or CZ. When tested or put under lights, it will shine like a diamond and test as a diamond, but a genuine diamond has to say so on the receipt, not only a diamond because then it's lab created. 90% of people buy something that's a diamond and think it's genuine. Only people that know about diamonds will know if they're buying a genuine diamond or not. Well, genuine diamonds are much too expensive and only the rich can afford them, so I guess a lot of people will have to be happy with CZ or lab created diamonds. You said to your husband, Happy Anniversary Jeff and he said the same to you. We were waiting for him to say, "Happy Anniversary Darling, you're still the Apple of my eyes!" For you it would be, "Happy Anniversary Sweetheart! You're still the Love of my life! Or what would I do without you!" That would of been the topping on the cherry pie on the video! Where is the romance for your vlogs? Where is the chocolate and red roses? You can't have one without the other!
    Cheers to Nice and the beautiful ocean that we all can enjoy and marvel at God's creation!🌴

      We didn't come to France to look for bagels. They were never an expectation. But we observed that they do exist here, so do American fast food places. A person can "look" for and enjoy anything they want, anywhere in the world. Doesn't mean they will find it. Perhaps bagels would never be something you'd want to eat in France, but each to his own. • @postcardsfromourgoldenyears
      @postcardsfromourgoldenyears  Месяц назад +1

      Absolutely! We only used Adrian Leeds for the initial consult, where she gave us lots of advice and info and then her agent very quickly assisted us in finding our apartment and making everything happen. She even came for the walk-thru, with us, after the lease was signed, when we picked up the keys. I highly recommend using AdrianLeeds.com. They do lots more than we hired them to do but they have been in Paris and Nice France for many years, are all expats from the US themselves, and understand the process and what us Americans want and expect and can approach every hunt for the perfect home representing your interests. Well worth the money spent. In the scheme of things it was a small price to pay for their expertise. And I was able to do everything else we needed myself, and continue to do those things on my own.
