- I've got a single malt scotch whisky from the Glen Moray distillery in Speyside today. This is the Glen Moray 18. It's well regarded not just for its flavour, but also for its price. I'll taste it and give you my thoughts. Cheers!

Glen Moray is the perfect whisky to have in your cabinet for your father-in-law when he comes over for dinner four times a year. You pull it down and he feels special you are serving 18 year old single malt. When he wants it with ice and a splash of coke you happily oblige with a smile.
Well said! 🥃
that's what I use Auchentoshan for
@@benjamintreitz1647 lol yup. That’s a great choice too.
Hi Geoff. I think the Glen Moray "core" range is quite good considering price. You mentioned the Warehouse 1 range. Overall reviews for this range seem to be very good. I have a bottle of the Manzanilla finish, and it's is excellent.
Sounds great! Very interested to try some well-presented Glen Morays. Lots of potential! 🥃
Stands as a good "entry-level" 18 year old - sounds extremely pleasant. €77 in my market (Poland).
Good price for it. 🥃
Thanks for reviewing this whisky, I haven’t had much Glen Moray. I see it on the shelf all the time but it doesn’t seem to move much. The Cask Strength sounds interesting but CS always gets my attention. Cheers, keep these reviews coming!
Thanks, buddy! 🥃
Absolutely echo everything you said Geoff. We hosted a Glen Moray tasting night for our whisky club with the line up; Elgin Classic, EC Peated, EC Sherry, EC Chardonnay, Elgin Signature 12 non-chill filtered, Elgin Heritage 15 and the 18. We've all agreed this was the weakest tasting we've formed. 12 non-chill was good and the 18 was alright but the rest was massively underwhelming, some bordering on very bad. The Warehouse series and the special releases where full maturation takes place in wine casks are just fantastic. So I think Glen Moray is smart in playing both sides and actually being good at it. If you're a beginner wanting to explore cask finishes at a budget, Glen Moray is your distillery. If you're a resident of Snobsville then the special releases at a higher price tag will make you happy. Interesting brand, very good video. Cheers!
Yeah the standard releases always fail to impress. Sounds like I really need to get my hands on some cs Moray. Cheers! 🥃
Prices are so unpredictable in different markets. This is certainly low but other comments have more expensive bottles lower in their markets.
I sprung for the wooden box and got the 21 year old, port finish. This was cheaper by $15 than the $195 Glencadam 21.
I don't know what I was thinking that day but I get a thrill every time I extricate the bottle from the box for a pour.
I will say that it's more balanced and interesting than some other port whiskys I have, especially the GlenAllachie 12 which is very expensive by comparison.
Once I realized that this bottom shelf brand was not doing 40% I was willing to try. The 18 is $102 and that's in the range of Jura 18 and Glendronach 15. Navigating the $100 price range is very difficult these days. I have Tomatin18 and Loch Lomond 18 which are nice and cheaper still, with better specs than the Jura
It's on the radar just way down the list. Thanks for reviewing it.
So that Port 21 is good, eh? Sounds like it could go either way for me, as I'm not the biggest Port fan. Might consider it if I ever come across it, though. 🥃
@@Gwhisky it's not great, and I certainly bought it for age statement, ABV and the price. Not the Port finish.
I don't know if the finish adds or detracts but you can't argue with age. When the whole age range appeared I was kinda thrilled that they weren't 40% so I think my decision was more emotional than rational.
There was an indie bottle I lost out on that month that I had to really hunt for. Should have bought that instead and this GM 18 which is still available. The 21 is no more.
I also have a Michel Courier Port matured scotch. 10 years old and over 50%, so it's way more dramatic. This GM21 is very nice. Weird that the GlenAllachie 12 port is super smooth and sort of generic.
When I should get back to buying whisky again, I've been meaning to give this and the Loch Lomond 18 a shot.
The loch lomond 18 is better bud this one is not bad bud a little borring bud what, can, you expect vor the price
I always appreciate a nice extended pinky. Not many reviews of Glen Moray. I appreciate your thoughts.
Pinkies up to you and your health, my friend. 😉🥃
Hallelujah! Fair review.
Hah what do you think, was I too harsh? 😉🥃
@@Gwhisky No, I think you were accurate. It's hard to review a budget-brand without taking that knowledge into the review, you know?
There are only a few HQ 18s under $100 left in the USA, Singleton Glendullan 18 which is crap, Loch Lomond 18 which is pretty good, Tomatin 18 which is very good, and this $90 Glen Moray which I think is pretty good, but there are better, more interesting bottles for less.
BTW, Deanston 18 is at least $120, but I think it's more often selling for ~$150 these days around NYC...if you can find it ✌️
Spot on Mr G
It’s ok , good value , pleasant ..But nowt to write home about 🤣👍
Brill channel mate , Thanks !
Thanks, buddy! Appreciate it! 🙏
Hi Geoff. The Glen Moray 18 has been on my list for a while now, haven’t got (yet) round to buying it because something else comes up. Good review, don’t forget to raise your little pinke when sipping a dram 😂. Slàinte Geoff
Hah cheers buddy. Pinkies up! 🥃
I think I like it more than you do but I agree on that Deanston 18 is better😊
Hi Geoff. The basic glen moray Elgin classic is £20 in Scotland and it’s really flavourfull. It’s only 40 percent abv and, I think, NAS, but I really enjoyed it and it made me think about new distilleries charging £90 for three year old spirit. GM retailingfor a long time in supermarkets over here 🎉may have caused it to be overlooked by many. Wonder what the 15 is like.
The 15 is worth checking out if you're a fan of the Elgin classic. I won't deny they're good whiskies at a good price. 🥃
"The cheapest 18 year old I've ever picked up at a bar." (background setting: angry father pounding on door, yelling "I know she's in there!!!")
😂😂😂
I do appreciate your tasting notes. I come from a cigar background so I'd actually like to these blinded without an age statement. I've seen new release cigars become so much more after 1st and 2nd ferment.
Great review. I can only find 1 cheaper 18-year-old. Knockando 18. Such underrated gem imo. 55€ or 60$ at my store. I like to have one around. Not too complicated but not one dimensional either. Cheers🥃
Haven't had it. Sounds like I should try it out. 🥃
$180 here in Ontario. Ya…don’t think so! 🙄 At our inflated prices here, I’d sooner have the Lagavulin 16 or Mortlach 16 for essentially the same price. Not without their own issues, but far more enticing pours. Cheers Geoff!
Ouch! I tend to agree. LCBO prices, man...
G, I Have recommend this to you a few times. Thank you for reviewing! I totally understand your comments and feelings. Being first fill Bourbon only is it not possible that there is a bit of an old fashion style being it is Sherryless which is not
The norm today? I have gone thru over 2 bottles the past few years and found a bit more subtle flavors as the bottle ages a bit open. I still find a coconut undertone and a slight nuttiness. Stepping away from the generic image of GM and pouring this to friends blind, the response has been much more enthusiastic. I do enjoy this a bit more and still find this a delightful non sherried dram. Great work as always Neal Bruce!
My pleasure, Neal! As for the style, I actually like that it's not sherried, as that makes it quite unique within the category. It may be a batch issue or just our difference in palate, but I seem to get less out of this one than you and many others. I'll have to check back in on this from time to time to see if it opens up any more. Appreciate the tip and the recommendation! Cheers! 🥃
My bottles are from the week it was released. Graham Coul was still the Master Distiller. I bought 4 bottles from GB at the time. New MD sometimes a different blend!
I think the 18 is a very good whisky and the Warehouse 1 bottlings are even better so yes are a bit of a whisky snob.
👍
I haven't tried this one yet, but now the price has gone up to 12-13,000 yen ($90-100), so it's no longer cheap here. I'd go for Glenmorangie 18 ($80)- or Glenlivet 18 (60-).
Both better imo, although I haven't had the Glenlivet at 40% yet. Loved it at 43%. 🥃
Glen Moray 18 is $105 in the Northeast US. Too much for a supposed value whisky. Deanston 18 which was mentioned as an alternative is $160. Glenmorangie 18 is $118 which I honestly think is probably better than either the Glen Moray or the Deanston
The Deanston is better. The Glenmorangie is a bit too watered down and hurts the mouth feel and finish
That's pretty damn pricey! 😬
@@Gwhisky Welcome to the New York area. Love the channel Geoff. When you are paying top dollar it's great to have some honest, and entertaining, reviews.
Very kind words. Thanks for watching! 🙏🥃
How does it compare to the Talisker 25, since you've done a back to back comparison. My money is on the Glen Moray.
Hah are we talking value or taste? I've got two different answers for you. 😉
@@Gwhisky don't take to heart what I said, just trying to be annoying. In my mind, I will probably try a Glenfarclas 15 before I try the 18. The 25 is not something I can get my hands on unless one of my organs is worth something.
About $140AUD (90US, 84EU) here. I've a bottle but haven't opened it yet. Recommended on the taste/ price ratio and the ABV.
Why the jazz trumpeter when it was clearly a sax?
Would this one or glenfiddich 18 / glenlivet 18 be better for beginners?
I think the high ABV at more than 47% could put off beginners. The tamer 40% Glenfiddich / Glenlivet 18year-olds are more accessible and offer more interesting flavours imo due to also being matured in sherry casks.
Thos one has the specs, but typically beginners don't yet understand or require a higher abv. For flavour, I prefer the Glenlivet 18, but I'd recommend looking for an older bottle at 43%. 🥃
Thanks for sharing your thoughts (and apparantly mine) on Glen Moray, Geoff.
Have tried several and haven't had a bad one. Not tried this 18yo. So who knows...
Slàinte mhath
Cheers buddy. 🥃
Howdy, I just picked up a 15 year old Glen Moray, American oak and Sherry cask maturation, non-chillfiltered at 48% abv... It's a travel retail job, but I got it online here in NZ for $99 NZD for a 1 litre bottle. Has anyone tried this? There's very little about it online, but on the Glen Moray website appears to be NAS and 12 year old versions with similar specs. Anyway, have not opened it yet, just fishing for info... Cheers!
Another review! pumping them out.
I've only managed to try one Glen Moray and it was the 10year Chardonnay Cask (not Finish), which I think was what came before. It was fiarly punchy ...for a 43%er and delivered some interesting flavors. Still only scored it a 3.4 and I only start to gaze upon my bottles with any sort of covetousness with a score of 3.6 or better.
Sigh. Unfortunately, I've... I've caught that snob bug. It's actually starting to cripple my ability to buy and enjoy affordable bottles and right now, I've settled on anything $50 or under as being affordable.
I actually didn't mind that Glen Moray Chardonnay. As you said... good flavours.
Good thing you've avoided the snob bug. It does a number on your wallet. 🥃
Funny how much difference in price levels between the brands/bottles around the world. Here in Denmark the Deanston 18 yo is currently approx. 40% more expensive than the Glen Moray 18.
Thanks for the review, Geoff. I don't disagree with you thoughts, although the price difference of course makes it a different consideration in my country.
Yes, I'm in a position where I hear what a lot of people share what they pay in their markets, and some of the differences are just absurd. I realize taxes, distributors, and retailers all affect the final price, but still...
Auchentoshan 18 is cheaper i guess. But it tastes like matured in a plastic carboy😂
it's always bottles like this that I wonder .. if they were presented in a beautiful bottle and casing, with hype over hype of how great it is, if people would taste and regard this exact same bottle more highly.
It's a good question. I'd like to think that I'd be unaffected by that, but who knows? There's definitely some interesting psychology at work when it comes to whisly preferences, which is why blind tasting are so much fun! 🥃
@@Gwhisky well said!
I don't think so. Tons of very hyped whiskies come in the most plain bottles you'll ever see. Half of the top 10 whiskies on whiskybase have screw caps.
Thought it was 40 abv first. Good price for 18 if you Wana explore older whiskey for cheaper price. Any idea is muirheads 16 any good? Cause it looks crazy cheap
Can't say I've tried the Muirhead release. Is that the Silver Seal bottling? Can't comment, unfortunately. 🥃
@@Gwhisky yes. Cost just 31€
I can acquire this at my local LC for $200 CAD (after tax). I paid less for an Arran 18, and about the same for an Ancnoc 24 and a Tamdhu 18. I guess I'll have to pass, and im talking about gas 🤪
Hah good call. 😉
Whilst it is 18 years old it is also a little "boring", I cannot think of a better word for it, I find it drinks more like a 15 year old. I did however pick up a couple of them for around €50, so not complaining as it fine as a summer sipper, is over 46% etc... I also got me a Deanston 18 and that is far superior.
Yeah Deanston really is the way to go. Apparently mich Pricier in some markets, though. Cheers. 🥃
@@Gwhisky I bought the Glen Moray for about €50, and the Deanston was maybe ten more but is never in stock. Now it is back in stock at 95€....
@@NeilImmortal Damn! Maybe I should stock up before the same thing happens here. 😬
As one of my whisky geek friends would say, "That's blendin' whisky" (a decent generic whisky "base" for blends, with no real distinguishing character at all). I don't know if Glen Moray is actually used in a lot of blends, but to me it seems like that kind of ho-hum whisky.
Kind of like Glenkinchie in my book, which is respectable enough I guess, but not many people seem to drink except in Johnnie Walker.
Geoff you butchered it today...... No, in fact you massacred the dis😊distillery.😂😂
I have a 1 liter bottle of Glen Moray 15 years old, bought for MYR199 (about US$45) in a duty free island. Not really like it 🥺
At least it's not too pricey! 🥃
Hi mr.Geoff. )))) I like moray , try shery , porto , 12yo , very nice . prie 22-25$ . Gumarjos !
Great! Cheers buddy! 🥃
Honest review. Can't rave about every whisky.
You pronounce it like Bill Murray and I pronounce it like Moray eel.
Geoff pronounces it correctly.
Note to Glen Moray stop making cheap whisky the snobs don't like it LOL.
I love first fill Bourbon casks and love Deanston 18 as well, to have two
quality 18 yr old drams at their RRP to day is a blessing ( not like Diageo spanking our arse's at every opportunity )
The Warehouse 1 series is fantastic 2014 Oloroso cask 60%, be brave folks and try it, that Glen moray classic for £20-00 is great for you're infinity bottle or making cask strength Highland Park last longer 🙂
Note to Glen Moray: keep making affordable age stated whiskies and disregard the snobs on RUclips. 😉
Shame the Warehouse releases aren't sold in my market. Keep hearing they're amazing. 🥃
Glen Meh-ray. Just kidding - don't wanna offend anyone. But there are so many whiskys out there to choose from, I will pass on this personally. Thanks for the review though Geoff! Cheers 🥃🥃
Cheers buddy! 🥃
I got their 21yo..................BORING...............a non entity !
Got to say Glen Moray is very much slept on by a lot of enthusiasts, the 18 is very solid with classic Speyside flavours, the Warehouse 1 releases though are even better usually.
For anyone who can make it to the distillery they have 3 cask strength single cask hand fills available for a good price (£60 for the younger two and an older £99 one) including a heavily peated one (yes Glen Moray make small amounts of heavily peated whisky, it's good!) and some interesting distillery exclusives, l picked up an 11 year old cask strength peated port finished exclusive that really impressed me. These are definitely the more challenging expressions!
Those Warehouse releases are on the bucket list. Sadly not sold in my market. 🥃
Hi Geoff! Well, as one of the people who is guilty of having tried to push you into making this review, all I can say is that apparently you are a bigger whisky snob than I am! Hah. Well, I blame batch variation and early-days sentiment for the fact that I have this whisky at 87. I may have based this on the inaugural release of the 18, though. Suggestion: try IB Glen Moray. Very underrated and consistently good, often even excellent. Cheers!
I haven't had any IB Moray, if I recall correctly. Something I should rectify. Cheers, my friend. 🥃
yoyoyo. getting back into whiskys again. i just grabbed an Arran haarmpny edition 6. will likely crack open manana
Welcome back to the fold, buddy! That Arran sounds like a belter. Enjoy! 🥃
$65 for Deanston/Glen Moray 18!!! Yikes. Goes for $100 in Texas
Ouch! 🥃
Cheapest I see Glen Moray 18 is around $100. Deanston 18 is $150 or more if i can even find it.
Ouch! Not worth that much! 🥃
The batch I have is excellent and easily above 90 and I have 5 bottles left.
High praise from you, Doc! Glad to hear you're enjoying it so much. Could be a batch thing, I suppose. I know this one has its fans. Cheers! 🥃
I remember a couple years ago having samples of this 18 and the 12 yr old.
I preferred the 12. It reminded me a bit of old Pulteney 12. The 18, I can’t recall any tasting notes. Just thought it was meh. Mind you it was small samplings by the salesman. I was unimpressed . If I we’re to buy something of this type, for like $20-30 cheaper I’d much prefer the Chivas 18 any day.
It's good stuff, but the fact that you forgot it and the only thought that crosses your mind when you think about it is "meh," tells you everything you need to know. 😉
@@Gwhisky on the other hand I did come away thinking that for the price the 12 wasn’t bad. Maybe a daily sipper? Idk. Local store has Balblair 12 for $40. That’s better.
Not many respectable single malts left under $50. I’m going on a buying freeze until Dec. haven’t been drinking much lately. Probably because it’s been so damn hot. Either way I’ve had less whisky this year than any year since I started the “hobby”. But I digress.
In these times a decent dram for cheap is rarely available. I think the 12 Glen moray is $30 locally. Not even glenmorangie is that nowadays. It goes for @ $42 now after hovering @ $30 for ever.
@SaltyCuban Yeah can't get around the fact that they're decent and drinkable, and also easy on the wallet. 🥃
its £70 in England after your review Geoff i think its worth buying cheers
Cheers Liam. Hope you enjoy it! 🥃
Nice review! I agree. It’s a fine bottle but not “wow”. It would be a good gift for someone used to 40% whisky to show them what UCF and higher ABV is like. Glen Murray does make good liquid though. Look at all the releases from SMWS. They are well over 300 by now. Cheers!
I can't say I've tried their SMWS bottling, and at that price, I likely never will. But I agree they can make good whisky. Lots of potential that doesn't shine in many of their OBs, imo. 😘
@@Gwhisky Sorry! I meant SMWS has released over 300 casks from Glen Moray. Sorry for the confusion. Cheers!
Great review G. ! ----- the GM 15 is 50% sherry-15 + 50% bourbon-15, and 75$CA ( 18 is 180$ in Ontario ! ! ) .
Quite the bump in price for those last 3 years, eh? The 18 is only about CAD $35 more than the 15 in Taiwan. Classic LCBO...
