Estimating How Many Photos Disney Takes at Walt Disney World
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 22 апр 2020
- Between the figurative army of Photopass photographs across their four theme parks, and the 13 rides that take ride photos, I wanted to try and find out how many photos Disney takes at Walt Disney World every single day.

Making memories, making memories! Taking pictures is making memories. Catching little pieces of time. Making them yours and making them mine!
I understood the reference.
disney sing along songs!!
only 13 of the rides have on ride photos? it feels like it would be much more than that
bumpyJake The last time I rode Spaceship Earth, they had a photo taken that was available for purchase. RobPlays missed that one so maybe there are many more.
I love your nerdy theme park math videos. They really help me see the parks in a different and fun light. If you're looking for ideas - I've often wondered how far into space all the rides on space mountain since opening would add up to. Would we have reached the sun, Saturn, Pluto, or beyond?
Probably, but I would have enjoyed watching Rob do his mathDisney take on it. Also, I didn't want to be the one to say it was more like a "Mission to Mars".
Going to make a couple estimations of my own.
Assuming Disney is operating their storage using Microsoft Azure (Disney+ uses it, and they signed a 5-year agreement with Microsoft for other innovations, so I'm using their calculator)
Note that all of this is monthly
Standard Performance Tier
GRS (Geo-Redundant Storage, 3 copies in different drives in one data center and one copy in another data center in another region, meaning, 4 total copies across 2 physical locations)
100 TB of storage (probably a bit more than absolutely needed, but buffer is good)
Put (file create) operations: 800 (x10k) (your estimates put 7.5 million photos a month, I'll over estimate a tad)
List: 400 (x10k) (I just wildly guess half the photos will be pulled up)
All Other: 400 (x10k) (I don't know what this necessarily covers, but operations are cheap 10,000 ops is literally 1.5 cents)
Delete is free
GRS Data Transfer 100 TB (full backup)
Professional Direct support $1,000/month
Monthly Cost: $13,318.60 (10k of that comes from the initial 100TB I put on there, )
~$415/day
Yeah, the cost of a service like this, even self-hosted, is trivial to The Mouse
To expand on the video, here's the full list of my 13 ride photo estimations of how many photos are taken per day! Again, please take these with a grain a salt. It's based on a 12-hour operational day, assumes the rides never breaks down, and uses capacities that are estimated.
Buzz Lightyear's Space Ranger Spin - 9,000
Space Mountain - 7,992
Seven Dwarfs Mine Train - 9,600
Haunted Mansion - 14,400
Splash Mountain - 1,800
Pirates of the Caribbean - 1,728
Test Track - 2,400
Frozen Ever After - 996
Rock n Roller Coaster - 5,400
Tower of Terror - 1,140
Slinky Dog Dash - 4,620
Dinosaur - 2,400
Expedition Everest - 5,400
Hey Rob, why didn't you use the individual rides' average file sizes for their respective on-ride photo counts?
Well yeah, you would have to use the maximum possible considering the number of photos being taken right now is zero.
Your hands down the best Disney youtube on the internet
I just realized that this was his last video when i went searching for a new one and at the time it was posted 3 weeks ago!!!
@@liamb.9964 Yup! Taking a break to work on some bigger channel changes that are coming soon. Also have the next video's script in the works so I should be back to regularly posting content in the next week or two!
This is the kind of content that I love getting from this channel! Few Disney channels take such an oddball topics like this.
That's actually way less space than I was presuming. Compared to, for example, digital video assets, photos are likely a drop in a bucket for even just the parks' storage.
My mom just takes pictures of the pictures lol park itself is already expensive.
This video is so interesting. Thank you for putting all this information together. Disneyland Resort only has 6 rides with photos.
*Mathematics 100*
If you think that’s a lot, consider the number of security cameras Disney has on their property and how they’re likely storing the data from those for _at least_ a few days. Disney likely has a PB or so of storage on-property to deal with all this stuff.
This is genuinely interesting. Thank you
Not even a petabyte? A hobbyist can store that amount. If they had to continuously store photos forever, maybe then it would be more titanic. Though it's Disney, they can easily take care of that need even if that was the case.
Also, they may/could even loselessly compress the images in storage.
Awesome stuff. We always get the memory maker it is a fun way to remember the trip.
and that doesnt take into account the temporary pictures taken on spaceship earth for the ending descent of the attraction. as a local AP, there have been days where i have taken over 50 photopass pictures in galaxy's edge alone. lol. great work and video as always Rob!
watching these videos while folding laundry is an experience
THAT'S A LOT OF PHOTOS!
Hey Rob I miss your face job your videos. As always such amazing information that is not available anywhere else. Thanks so much for your videos.
Thanks for making new content Rob, I've been needing it!
Amazing video and math guesstimation Rob, I love these videos
Love this! Every time I go to Disneyland I pick up the FastPass+ with the PhotoPass (Disneyland’s version of Memory Maker, I guess). I figure if I’m dropping that kind of trip money, why wouldn’t I?
I end up with around and at least 20 pictures, both from photographers and on rides, each day. I don’t keep all of them, since the photographers take lots of backup shots.
Rob, you should really go back to those old Minecraft Disney servers. You should check them out to see how they have changed.
It's amazing how WDW I.T. can handle all of this photographic data, yet STILL screw up the My Disney Experience app and Central Resort Reservations!
0 at the moment
I’m so lucky to holiday from the UK, we get free memory maker which is straight up amazing.
Missing your videos!! Can’t wait for more!
More on the way! Got some big plans for the channel soon!
0:37 Magicband 1.0!!!
Thank you for answering one of my two questions. So, now that you know the amount of data they store, do you know where they do or do they talk about data storage in their sustainability reports? It takes a lot of energy to store things in the cloud.
Great content! Very interesting. I know it’s a small percentage but what about those short video shots that they start out close then zoom out? How big do you think those files are?
Does Disney turn off the on-ride photos for some rides during peak times? I was at the parks around Christmas/New Years last year and they didn’t have an option to add photos from Pirates, Slinky Dog Dash or Seven Dwarfs Mine Train to photopass. Like there was nowhere to view the on ride photos or scan your bands.
Such a cool concept for a video! It would be very interesting to know what percent of those photos are actually bought by guests either individually of via memory maker because not every guest actually buys their photos.
I've often wondered the same. With so many people using their phones to snap a pic of the display screens at the end of the rides, or taking a screenshot of photos on the photopass website, why does anyone buy them? Then again, I get photopass free with my gold annual pass, and the quality is better than a screenshot.
@@stewarthall2981 I'm sure the preview on the website is low-resolution, and likely also has a watermark. To get full resolution and no watermark, you have to purchase the photo. Plus, taking a picture of the display screen at the end of the ride is always inferior.
I am curious too. I have been dozens of times and never once even looked to see how much the pictures cost. We take so many pics of our own, I have never thought of buying theirs.
The ride photos do not target individuals but ride vehicles. The same photo for a Test Trak vehicle would not yield 6 photos but 1 (purchasable by all six riders but still just one photo).
Correct. That's why the math accounted for ride vehicles instead of riders. Using the ride vehicle capacity allowed for converting riders per hour into ride vehicles per hour which, itself, is ride photos per hour.
@@MidwaytoMainStreet Thanks, Makes sense. Great video by the way.
With Magic Bands each band gets a copy of the photo associated to it so six guests could be six photos.
Where does the Haunted Mansion take your photo? Am I missing something?
I’m willing to bet that the cost of their data storage for all aspects of the Disney company is much cheaper than it was a few years ago. Thanks to the competitive nature of the cloud storage market and the quickly advancing cloud computing industry, Disney is probably paying pennies on the dollar for their storage vs 5-10 years ago. All the money they make off selling photos is pure profit. The cost of holding users photos for 45 or 365 days is peanuts. Photos are a massive money maker for them, the more photos they take, the higher the chance someone will purchase them.
Do you know why Nikon was made the official camera of the parks when Kodak went out? Did Canon even try to make an offer?
This video made me smile. Just an interesting topic that makes you think
Could you calculate how many people could fit into the parks, while still following social distancing guidelines? Think Disney would like to know 😂
It would be so cool if all those photos actually were stored on that (what we’d thought was fake) computer on Spaceship Earth.
(Another outstanding video, Rob!)
OH THANK GOD I NEED THIS RIGHT NOW lmao
Wouldn’t have minded the video on El Morro (you could’ve called it “Screw It and then they Left!”)...But, Third time WAS the charm, I guess...Cool idea, cool video!
I expected it to be much more. For a company the size of Disney, 100TB of data is nothing.
You know there's someone at Disney watching this video that know's the exact answer.
And if Rob gets too close to the truth, we may never hear from him again... the men in black may show up...
Your math is wrong because Haunted Mansion never runs at max capacity cause it breaks down every five minutes
So the net is Disney can hold all those photos on a few thousand dollars worth of hard drive space.
Now that's not counting all the millions or even billions of hidden camera photos monitoring and tracking guest activities all around the parks and resorts. For example, I'm sure every guest is photographed at least once entering and leaving the park.
And that number is just for the 4 Florida parks. How high would that number get once you add all of the rest of the Disney parks LOL.
That's a massive amount of storage, I wonder if their storage is in one place or if its in multiple areas on property.
Sam Cody Its definitely a huge amount for most consumers and even most businesses.
I’ve worked with amounts of data which are bigger before, so here is what I’m guessing they do: Due to the size I’m certain they have at least some storage on-site somewhere. I wouldn’t be surprised if they have a few PB of storage for various purposes, and this would be included in that. That storage is likely replicated at least once to another data center for disaster recovery purposes and redundancy. Within each DC that data will be stored on disks in a RAID array, which will increase the storage requirements again for redundancy and speed of access.
@@RichardLaughlin Good explanation. And for those not in the know, PB=Petabyte (one PB = 250 bytes; or 1024 terabytes, or a million gigabytes).
WOW
Ever thought of making a new video with McParks? So much has changed since 2016.
That's actually a surprisingly low number.
Where does the WDW Haunted Mansion take your picture? I can't think of any time that you would get a photo taken
They've added a photo spot towards the beginning in the hallway of portraits that change during lighting strikes. The camera flash is masked as one of the lightning strikes.
Thanks Rob😀
Oooooo that’s gonna be a big number
Disney is getting rid of a lot of photographers and replacing them with crappy automated photo pass spots. 😔

Thanks.
Short answer a lot
this was such a cool video i love how u manage to come up with this stuff and actually figure it out
I'm going to guess 0 right now.
I’d like to think the 999 happy haunts have been starting up the doombuggies and playing with the on-ride photo, laughing every time they fail to show up in the picture.
I'm think of going to Disney! can I use my own camera for characters photos or do I have to buy the photos?
that is a lot of photos
You can use your own camera. What'll happen is that the photopass photographer will take a few photos with their own camera first, but they'll also be happy to take photos with your phone or camera. That way you'll have the option to buy from Disney if you choose, but ultimately you don't have to. The same applies with any photopass photographers in the park, not just character meets.
@@MidwaytoMainStreet tank you
Say CHEESE!!!😁👍✌
Hey Rob I just heard your theme some where and it's been killing me 😫can you tell me the name of the song?
It's a track off the RUclips music library called "Getz Me to Brazil"
@@MidwaytoMainStreet you are the best! Keep up the great Disney content!
You forgot Google Maps
;)
Rob, Disney trying to partnership by anime but
Why Disney can't own anime ?
I have been to Disney dozens of times... and I never knew the Haunted Mansion took pics ha ha.
But I disagree with you when you said Disney was expensive. For the amount of entertainment they provide, and comparing it to other types of entertainment (especially vacation entertainment) I find Disney to be a bargain. 😷
Ok
Thank you for using "estimate" instead of guesstimate. That psuedo word always made me angry...
