I think we all know, if we've watched a decent amount of Japan content, that the expensive thing in Japan is not food but rent specifically the increased cost due to key money, needing up to 6 months rent when signing combined of course with how hard it is to rent as a foreigner. Lovely video as always of course.

They seem cheap to us on the US dollar for sure but when I think about what the poor average Japanese salary is, the prices don't seem so cheap after all. Great for us tourists! I remember going to Japan in 2008 and I was warned that Japan is expensive, so I was a bit concerned, but when I got there everything was cheaper than in Norway. Seems like things are still cheaper than in Norway.
I reckon though, that housing is more expensive in Japan, in the big cities, than in Norway. Don't get me wrong, housing is expensive in Norway as well, but we do only have about 5.5 million people in about the same area as Japan, so we're less pressed in that regard.
I often find myself wishing that I hadn't encountered health issues so that I could have continued studying Japanese back then, though I am making an attempt again now and would really like to visit Japan again in the future.

And yeah those prices are insanely cheap compared to what we have to deal with in Northern California. Eating out has become ridiculously expensive with inflation. A meal at In-n-Out costs easily $60 for burgers and fries for a family of 4. We were in a local bar, had 1 bangers and mash, 1 chicken pot pie, 2 hot teas, 1 shepherd's pie, 1 salmon salad - the bill with tip (because you cannot not tip here) came to US$175! It was basic bar food and not very good at that. So we hardly ever eat out, sad to say. A sushi meal would cost like $200 easily for what you ordered. So while people say we earn high wages here in Silicon Valley, we are actually not living it up - what with the high rent/mortgage and cost of living.

It’s amazingly strange how these sushi 🍣 restaurants conveyer belts “know” where to stop despite foods being digitally ordered ……

Things are so expensive in America right now as well. I feel like certain things seemed cheaper but other things more expensive. Our vending machines are ridiculously expensive now. Plus ours only have water or soda. I’d love to have a vending machine that sold milk tea here lol.

I don’t get how vending machines are still in business in the US. I don’t know anyone who uses them since they’re so expensive 😭

@ I’m saying! It’s crazy. They are ridiculous. I only use them on the rarest of occasions

Going back to the US (from the UK) in January was shocking. I went to Wal-Mart and spent $300 just buying odds and ends, it so crazy expensive. England used to be so much more expensive, but now it's the other way around.

Most of the prices were pretty surprising to me as they are pretty low.
Where I'm at, a regular movie ticket is about $15, a big tub of popcorn is about $15, and a fountain drink is $7.
Don't get me started on how expensive sushi has become in the last few years!
The Japanese restaurant I went to yesterday has Japanese soft drinks for $5, and US soft drinks for $4.
For sushi 2 pieces of Tuna is $10, 2 pieces of Salmon is $9. Most of the sushi is between $6 and $20.
Simple rolls like a California roll start at $10 and go up to $20.

I love peanut butter powder. Makes it /so much/ easier to clean the blender. 🎉

18:58 I was fully convinced the tree was going to fall at this point 😂 Tuna is a little rascal. It seems reasonably comparable to UK Manchester prices. We are having a cost of living crisis in UK though lol

I make an almost identical smoothie for myself every morning! I also like to use frozen mixed berries and I like to slice and freeze my bananas too. 😋

@@sharlainjapan Okay so I finally got to the end of the video (work interruptions!). You asked for feedback on prices!
I live in Vermont, USA which is a state directly south of Quebec. Up here, the cost of living is huge! I went to buy eggs in the supermarket yesterday and they were over $6 a dozen for just generic eggs! Bread is $4 a loaf (and my UK bf just about shits himself when he visits and we shop and he sees how small American bread loafs are!), milk is $4 a gallon, and if you go to a restaurant, at least near where I live, you're looking at $25-$50 a person, per meal.
I live in a gorgeous area next to a famous ski town, so prices here are a bit more than median. I love where I live, even though we don't have public transportation, but owning my own car affords me the privilege to drive a few hours to get to many major cities.
      Montreal - 1.5 hours
      Boston - 4 hours
I can take Amtrak (train) from Waterbury Vermont (home of Ben & Jerry's and Keurig coffee!) and be in NYC in 8 hours or Washington DC in 12 hours.
