I'd love to visit Japan but there's no way for me to get a longer vacation. Remote work could be a nice option but I'm really afraid of slow internet. How is the situation there in general? Would it be possible to travel around Japan and work at the same time? 🥺
Maybe you have said it before, but why moving to Japan? What is the reason to leave Canada? Do you think you will ever move back to Canada? Thank you for the beautiful videos!
Hi, Sharla! You're so beautiful! 😍I have two video suggestions. The Star Wars Celebration is coming up in April next year. It's my first SWC, and I'm so excited! Pls do a video on Star Wars-related or themed stuff, where to go to buy SW stuff (where specifically in Akihabara), Disney ride, where to stay, where to eat, etc. I also would like a more laid-back itinerary (less crowded places) loaded with tips for (first-time) solo travelers pls. 🍜🏯🎎Thanks so much!🙇♀

She's 10 years or 20 and a half years older than me which is insane to think about I think she's slightly older than my older sister so she's just felt older sibling vibes to me lol I guess the American-ized way of saying my senpai or senior haha

Shar, you should make a 3 part series video about your complete life there. 18-25, 25-32, 32-present. Show old videos you have of you there, info on a lot of things your found interesting in beginning, etc. Kinda a retrospective over 2-3 videos

Holy Moly! And I thought 14 years was long. You really are my senpai. What an amazing acheievement. And to still be known as a "Japanese Life" influencer. I LOVE IT. Cheers Sharla!!!
I moved here at 32 and yes it was pretty easy because I had a career, masters degree, money saved, some limited Japanese, and imho most importantly; friends in Japan and a bit of a life in Japan already. It was very easy to integrate and expand my social sphere because I wasn't starting from scratch in Japan. Hell I even had a wife initially but that fell to pieces for reasons from before we moved. 2 years in and I cannot get used to banking here. ALL of the banks are a decade minimum behind the modern British banks (eg; Starling).
I've been watching your channel for sbout ten years, it was my introduction to seeing someone outside Japan talk about their daily life and experiences there. That was the motivation for me to finally visit the country. Thanks for continuing to post videos. Also, to the person asking about moving to Japan in their 40's - there is a channel called Chani Japan which deals with that. She's an Australian woman who moved to Wakayama in her late 40's and has been there a little over a year now. Her videos show her daily life, explaining the benefits and challenges involved. She definitely shows that it's not too late to make a big move if you are middle-aged as long as know what you're getting into and are prepared.
I'm a farmer in New England and we just planted hundreds of sweet potatoes last week, so I laughed when you said you miss them. This year's crop is a-comin'!

I honestly can't remember when I found and started watching you, but you are always such a joy. You make me smile, and I wish to visit Japan even more every day. Thank you for being you! ❤
Omg i found you from Rachel and Juns channel years ago and found Sundai randomly and have loved both of your channels and simply adore seeing yall shiut out and help each other. I am planning to make my first trip for a milestone birthday and have a whole list of videos from all my favorite channels covering places to visit off the touristy paths. As someone who grew up in the Caribbean, i cannot wait to check out Okinawa and cant wait to see when you go. It seems so familiar but different.
I've been subscribed since like late 2015 now I think? I first lived in Japan in 2014 and I loved your content because it kept me feeling connected to Japan! Your videos now help me find cool new areas to put on my bucket list!! Much love to you from America~
Congrats on 20 years in Japan Sharla. I'm 1 year younger than you but have always wanted to visit Japan, so to hear that you've now been there 20 years has me reflecting how how I've spent my life so far haha.
congrats on 20 years! i know leaving home to live in a completely foreign country is terrifying yet so wonderful. thank you for taking us through your journey, it has been delightful watching your channel grow and i’ve learned so much, it encourages me to do the same. thank you always, i feel like you’re my internet mentor so thank youuuuuu even more!
In Harajuku I would also suggest checking out La Foret. It's a cool mall jam packed with small boutiques full of Kawaii / Visual Kei and other outlandish fasion. Plus since most tourists mostly know Takeshita and will be drawn into the big name boutiques on the main street it is much quieter.
Sharla, I have watched you for about 5 years. I am a 62 yo Australian who when I was 18 and living in a small town was wanting to travel overseas for a couple of years. O was shy then and instead I moved to Melbourne. I have visited several Asia countries in the last 15 years. 2 week in Tokyo 10 years ago. I would love to be able to see more of Japan but circumstances don't allow that. Seeing all the places through you, chris, Joey and aki amongst a few is helping. I say to my children and young freinds, if circumstances ever allow go and travel. My youngest came to Japan with me. Both girls I took to Sabah. The world is out there to be enjoyed. Much love to you and Chris fir keeping me entertained. ❤
I remember watching you when I was little, I’m finally an adult and I’m preparing to go to live in Japan as I always wanted to. Thank you for all the content you’ve done all this time.
I can't believe it has been that long already. I just wanted to express my appreciation to you and Chris and that you always find a great way to renew my love of Japan and it has helped me get over some big mental health issues I am facing. Cheers Amiga ~
My beloved and I went to Koya-san during our honeymoon and genuinely, it was one of the highlights of the trip. Gorgeous scenery, incredibly peaceful - and there was a cafe there which served me the nicest toasted sandwich I've ever had in my life! Even though we were only there for one night, between Kyoto and Osaka, the whole trip would have suffered if we hadn't gone - it was perfect for giving us time to just slow down and not think too hard about all the urban travel we'd been doing.
I can relate - Canadian from Toronto who married an American; coming up on 25 years in the US - time flies, but you're *always* a Canadian! BTW, love whatever you're doing with your hair!!!
I’ve been watching your channel for about 7 years now and am finally getting the opportunity to visit Japan. I practice yoga and my yoga instructor is from Japan and planing a trip! We will be visiting Tokyo and Ishigaki. Very much looking forward to the adventure.
I'm not sure if I've actually commented on one of your videos before, definitely haven't done so recently, but I've watched on and off since late 2014 and I've always appreciated your view of "unseen Japan" (I know that sounds grandiose but it's huge to me) and knowledge received from all the videos you've made so far. 20 years is a lifetime, and for that, congratulations! Visiting Japan is a dream I've had for a while, and while very difficult, I would regret it if I were to reject my chance. Thank you for all you do, and here's to another awesome 20 years!
Crazy that you've lived in a different country for so long! I can't claim to be a follower since day 1 but I've followed your channels since around 2013-2014 (in a cluster with Chris' channel and Rachel and Jun 😅). Always enjoyed the vibe your bring to your videos!
I have lived in Japan for almost 7 years and have enjoyed every minute! I've seen so many beautiful sights. I don't think I'll be here for 20 years (I'm quite a bit older), but I love the culture and the people. I really enjoy your videos. Keep up the amazing work you do! Nothing but the best to you and Chris!
100% on Harajuku. After Covid it has really gotten sad. Lots of the neat cafes we used to hit up, and so much stuff isn't as chill. The area you mention was certainly the area more chill and had much more friendly shops.
Hi Sharla you inspired me to go to Japan since I was like 12 and I would be so excited to watch your videos and have been watching since. I finally made it to Japan October 2023 for my honeymoon and I loved it so much and came back in April of 2024. ❤
I love Sundai! Have you ever done a collab with her? If not please do. Two of my fav Japan girlies would be a dream come true 🥰. thx for all the tips 💖
I love your hair!! The color is a slay Edit: also I don’t comment much but I’ve been watching you for nearly 8 years now and I’m just so proud of you for everything you’ve been through and all you’ve accomplished.. it just makes me so happy to see you thriving.. wishing you health and happiness always 💖
It’s funny you mentioned sweet potatoes - at least in America (and I’m from the southeast where holidays mean sweet potatoe soufflé ) I’ve never been to a grocery store where you smell baking sweet potatoes like in Japan. Also definitely no yakiimo man there! 🙂 we’ve had a variety of yakiimo from the local truck.
I might have been unlucky about not letting me in into restaurants. First trip to Japan 16 years ago I was not allowed to enter a restaurant in dougen-zaka street in shibuya and last year on my second trip I was not allowed to enter the same night in two different restaurants in the center of Hiroshima 😅
One of my favorite things I've seen you do (and it hasn't happened very often, on video at least) is when you don't remember the engish word for something. I think the first video of yours I saw was the first cat cafe. So I've been watching for 10 years depending on how soon I saw that after you posted it.
I knew it! I was just telling my bf last night how you and Chris must be up to something new and exciting because it was unusual how little you two were posting lol. Always good to hear from you and can't wait to hear what's new! 😁 it's crazy that you're old enough to say you've lived in Japan for 20 years 🤯 you are so gorgeous and look like you're in your 20's still! 💖
Omg I did the Nakasendo Trail for a study abroad!! My most vivid memory is us hiking and it started POURINNGG. Instead of being down about it we all started singing. Will remember it forever!
Came here after seeing Sundai supporting you. It’s so lovely to see you both supporting one another 🩷 loved the video thank you for sharing your 20 years of wisdom!
I love watching your interesting, informative and funny videos, I've been following you on RUclips for about 9 years. My next country to visit is Japan, I love everything I have read and watched about Japan. Congratulations on 20 years in Japan!
One thing I don't hear many people talk about is health system in Japan. Do you have any videos about the topic? Great video by the way! Just found your channel in my recommended page and already subscribed!
Ever since I was in my early 20s I’ve always had the idea of going to Japan for my 40th birthday… I’m 37 this September and on my birthday is when im going to start studying Japanese hard to give myself exactly 3 years to be fluent enough to hold a casual conversation. Although from finding people like yourself and Chris and watching a load of Japanese programmes throughout the years I’m not jumping in totally blind !

This past February marks my 20 years of living in Japan as well! Love it!
I cannot believe its 20 years! So cool, i am listening to Chris’s audiobook at the moment, and its lovely to hear all about his experiences and descriptions of the culture.
When I heard you say wedding plans I legit started crying for you out of joy. I watched you a lot in 2018 and 2022/23 when planning trips and came back to get some ideas for our next trip hearing that yall are opening a bar and getting married made me so happy for you guys. Congrats.
I actually didn't realize you have been there so long! For some reason, I thought Chris has been there longer. This was a great upload. Sending you much positivity from Minnesota.
I'm just about to get married in a few weeks and I can't begin to fathom the work involved in getting married halfway around the world, especially with the kind of work you guys do! Be sure to not rush and take all the time you need.
same here one of my oldest subs that im still following that is ...i was following your channel since i was 20 ..now i'm 30 years old ...and it feels like just yesterday✨️🎋🎍 a decade with Sharla! 🫶🏻
Congrats! Not 20 years in a different country, but I'm coming up on living 20 years in an area very different from where I are grew up and can, on a low-level, appreciate the milestone. Great vid, thank you.
Holy Gamoly! I've been here for over 30 but your still a youngster relatively speaking! This anniversary is a great chance to reflect on what you've really enjoy about being here. What are the top 3 things that,, going forwar, might keep her for another 20?
I was thinking about why she hasn’t yet changed the name and thinking about how long she’s been on RUclips. And also thinking about how long I’ve watched her. Turns out I’ve been faithfully watching without being subscribed for a few years. 😮🫤 I’m subscribed now. 😅
I love Koya-san. It might be my favorite place in Japan. You definitely need to go there. And it's just south of Nara province (where my wife's family is from), so you can travel through there on the same trip. Ogasawara is rough going, as you'll spend most of the trip on your back on a tiny mattress in the hull, as the ship rocks back and forth, but when you get there you'll see why it is worth it.
I love this type of video! Thanks for sharing your experiences and for all the videos you made throughout the years! ♡♡♡ Congratulations to 20 years in Japan. ♡♡♡
I loved my time on the Nakasendo as well! I started at Nakatsugawa and, despite injuring my foot in a stumble at Odaki and Medaki Waterfalls, not having accommodation at Tsumago-juku, and ultimately spending less time hiking than I planned because of my injured foot, I loved the whole area. I only went as far as Nojiri but I am determined to return to the trail and see more of it.
For a recommendation for your wedding, there's a few places here in Yorkshire that might do nicely. Namely around the coastline, Calderdale and the North York Moors. Just avoid Hull, and Bradford, and Wakefield.
Thank you Sharla! Excellent video! I can't wait to vacation in Japan again and visit the places you mentioned! I’ve watched your videos for years and you always give the best suggestions. Aloha!
Hey Sharla, as someone that lives in England...I don't know if you have checked but there are many beautiful old manors (or halls) that belong to the National Trust but they can also be rented as wedding venues and have special packages available. Just saying in case you would like a classic "old English decor and style" for your wedding. I got married in Spain so I can't recommend a particular venue.
It’s so funny, I just had a conversation with my Japanese husband about sweet potatoes yesterday. They’re really different here and while I love them, I still miss the ones back home! I cope by cooking Japanese ones with soy sauce and sugar lol they can’t be compared to those sweet orange potatoes, but delicious recipe that takes seconds to make! I also can’t believe I’ve followed you for about 10 years and that you’ve been here for 20! I moved to Japan five years ago and you and your videos definitely helped me make my move smoother! Thank you so much!! Wish you all the best ❤
Thank you for the video. My daughter is moving to Japan next week on a cultural visa (she will stay minimally 2 years). Now my challenge is to see how often I can visit on a visitors visa. She did get approved for an apartment last week and she is bringing her small dog (who has also been approved).
I can't believe it's been 2 years with Tuna! Doesn't seem like long ago you got him! Great to hear November is good weather because that's time of year I'd love to visit. Plan is to get for my 40th ('26)
I went to Koyasan on my first trip to Japan last October and it was incredible! The night tour of the cemetery was an unforgettable experience. It’s kind of a trek to get up there but totally worth it.
Yes, Koya-san is stunning. Went there in autumn, can't recommend it enough. Next time I think I will stay for two nights because one was just not enough.
Great content as always, Sharla. I love reliving Japan through your videos. I know that many people dislike the crowds at certain seasons and in popular places in Japan. However, I have always wondered why they would choose those areas of Japan as a destination if that's the case. There are numerous locations that don't attract hordes if travelers look for them. Or, why not embrace the congestion experience? Yes, Harajuku is over-rated, but for a first timer I'd suggest they simply experience it for awhile and then duck into one of many side-streets and see where serendipity takes them. That was always one of my favourite activities in Japan and a source of memorable moments. I certainly can't get that in Victoria, Canada where I live now. Or perhaps I'm an odd duck in that respect. I recall my first time in Japan in 1998 and wasn't back in the Vancouver area for a week when I already missed the crush. I went to the local (Richmond BC) Asian Mall on a Saturday just for the narrow hallways and human congestion. For locations such as Asakusa Sensoji, visitors can get the crowd experience during the day, and if it's solitude you're craving, go back in the evening when it's empty. Often they can have both.
Congratulations on 20 years! I haven’t been subscribed for 20 years, and I don’t know how long you have been doing YT, but I have been subscribed for a good many years. You are such a nice person and I always enjoy your videos. I hope the busy period you are having will translate into many videos because I miss your channel when you don’t post regularly. You are such a wealth of knowledge about exploring Japan.
100% agree on Harajuku. It was fun 20-15 yrs ago.. now it is just too crowded. We did went there in the morning because I wanted to show it to our kids 😅
After watching your and Chris's videos for years. I am finally getting to go to Japan! I am going to Malaysia for 10 days with my grad school course and then going to spend a week in japan after. I may spending about a day and half in Kyoto then rest of the week in Tokyo and I got reservations for the Pokemon cafer thats a 10 minute walk from my hotel!
I've been to Koya-san and it was the most amazing place I've ever seen (I stayed at a temple and got up really early to join the monks' morning ceremony and I had the rest of the cemetery to myself for a few hours)
Happy anniversary Sharla! Hope your next 20 years will bring you happiness, wish you all the best ❤🐈⬛🐈 I still absolutely treasure meeting you in Tokyo in 2016 ❤️
I completely agree with you Sharla! The current era we are able to improve other language skills easily. There are anything and everything you need to learn a foreign language! I'm jealous people who start learning languages now. 😁😁
Sharla!!! I’ve been following you for a very long time maybe 2014-2015? I am finally coming to Japan! I cannot wait! Thank you for all the advice over the years on Japan. I wish we could have coffee because it feels like we’re old friends. ❤
I went to Morioka on my recent trip to Japan and absolutely LOVED it! I would happily live there! Did Sendai as well, but without a doubt preferred Morioka!
Awesome video! I can’t believe I’ve been watching your videos since I was in middle school (about 13ish years ago) and wanting to live in japan like you. Now I’m in my second year on JET. Hope to see you sometime at the LOST bar.
JET seems like such an awesome way into Japan, Chris has lots of advice on his channel re: JET application etc, check out his teaching English vids! 🫶🏻🩷

20 years! I can’t believe it! I’ve been watching for as long as I can remember. Hasn’t been from the start but I’m happy I followed :)

I've been subscribed since like late 2015 now I think? I first lived in Japan in 2014 and I loved your content because it kept me feeling connected to Japan! Your videos now help me find cool new areas to put on my bucket list!! Much love to you from America~
Ah that’s wild!! Thanks so much for watching for so long 🥹🫶🏻
Congrats on 20 years in Japan Sharla.
Thanks for sharing your unique experience of this amazing country with us with all your content. I can't wait to go someday!
Thank you so much!! Hope you get a chance to visit for yourself soon🥰✨
Holymooly seeing Evan Edinger's name was such a blast from the past. I haven't watched him since the early 2010's
Haha I’ve been watching his channel since then too! Love his presenting style :)
I can't believe it has been that long already. I just wanted to express my appreciation to you and Chris and that you always find a great way to renew my love of Japan and it has helped me get over some big mental health issues I am facing. Cheers Amiga ~
I’ve been watching your videos from the beginning, Japan is still on my bucket list 😭
I'm applying to the JET program this August and it's videos like these that keep me hyped and hopeful!! 20 years that's amazing!
The color is a slay
Edit: also I don’t comment much but I’ve been watching you for nearly 8 years now and I’m just so proud of you for everything you’ve been through and all you’ve accomplished.. it just makes me so happy to see you thriving.. wishing you health and happiness always 💖
Sharla you hit me in the age feels. I have been watching your videos for almost the two decades 😅 I'm 38
Happens more often than I’d like😂
That happens to me, but I only speak English 💀
@@MrZanderson I know! Me too!!! There's a word for that..... What's the word for that!
@@sharlainjapanin case you're wondering, I've noticed it's been months since you've posted.
Thanks for sharing this, I’m planning on transitioning from Toronto to Tokyo. You’re helping to make the jump less stressful.
Ever since I was in my early 20s I’ve always had the idea of going to Japan for my 40th birthday…
I’m 37 this September and on my birthday is when im going to start studying Japanese hard to give myself exactly 3 years to be fluent enough to hold a casual conversation.
Congrats.
Congrats on 20 years.
That’s so sweet of you, thank you! 🥺🫶🏻
I actually didn't realize you have been there so long! For some reason, I thought Chris has been there longer. This was a great upload. Sending you much positivity from Minnesota.
I've been watching you and Taylor since she lived in Japan; I found you from her. Love your channel. Back then you had two channels. 💗💗💗
I'm just about to get married in a few weeks and I can't begin to fathom the work involved in getting married halfway around the world, especially with the kind of work you guys do! Be sure to not rush and take all the time you need.
I've been living in Nara for the past 3 years and I love it here more and more every day! It has so many hidden gems and is definitely underrated.
Yes! Extremely underrated 👌🏻
Congratulations! 20 years is an achievement 👍Whereas I left Japan over 20 years ago! Here is to another happy 20 years ❤🧡🩷
Your channel is my 2nd oldest subscription: 18 May 2016🎉
I'm also subbed to Sundai Love. My oldest sub: Kyde & Eric.
Omg thank you🥹🫶🏻🩷
same here one of my oldest subs that im still following that is ...i was following your channel since i was 20 ..now i'm 30 years old ...and it feels like just yesterday✨️🎋🎍 a decade with Sharla! 🫶🏻
where do you see that? that's awesome
- the diverse scenery 🗻
- ease of travel around the country (great trains)
- the Pokemon Center 😂
@@sharlainjapan Yes, excellent!
Sharmeleon evolve Sharizard your channel is 20 years old. I still wanna go to Japan!!!😊
Haha no the channel is only 13 years old, YT didn’t exist when I first moved here!
She'll evolve at 1 million subs I think!
I was thinking about why she hasn’t yet changed the name and thinking about how long she’s been on RUclips. And also thinking about how long I’ve watched her. Turns out I’ve been faithfully watching without being subscribed for a few years. 😮🫤 I’m subscribed now. 😅
@@LizzieBee00I’ve watched Sharla for along time yeah she’s an awesome Japan RUclipsr
Bless you Shar for your help:) your advice has helped me so much over the years
I love this type of video!
Aloha!
That's crazy! 20 years!!! I started watching your channel 7 or 8 years ago, but I had no idea that you were already there for such a long time! 👍👍👍🥰💕💕
I’m always so happy when I see that you have uploaded a new video!
There's something about your videos that is just so cosy and comforting 💜
Thank you for the video. My daughter is moving to Japan next week on a cultural visa (she will stay minimally 2 years). Now my challenge is to see how often I can visit on a visitors visa. She did get approved for an apartment last week and she is bringing her small dog (who has also been approved).
Oh that’s exciting! Best of luck to her, bet she’ll love it here 🥳✨
This is a really helpful video!! 🫶 I plan to stay in Japan next year for 3 months and then hopefully stay for proper residency in the future!
2004 is 20 years ago and RUclips didn't exist then😆
You have inspired SO MANY people to visit and learn about Japan!
Congratulations on 20yrs in Japan! Thank you for plugging Sundai Love's channel. ❤❤
Hope your next 20 years will bring you happiness, wish you all the best ❤🐈⬛🐈
I still absolutely treasure meeting you in Tokyo in 2016 ❤️
I completely agree with you Sharla!

Ahh that’s awesome!! Glad you made it here :) Hope it’s everything you’d dreamed of!
This is SO useful! Planning on moving from Canada and I am considering the JET program, but the process just seems sooo overwhelming!
JET seems like such an awesome way into Japan, Chris has lots of advice on his channel re: JET application etc, check out his teaching English vids! 🫶🏻🩷
@@sharlainjapan will do! Thank you so much 💕
Totally agree about Takeshita Street, it was just so overwhelming! But the little side streets were absolutely delightful (and much quieter thankfully 😂).
Can’t wait to watch your Okinawa video!!
Completely different vibe from Honshu 😊
