- While things are a little crazy in the world, with COVID-19 taking up all of the news across the globe, we look to the past to offer some guidance on how to best get through these tough times. In today's video we're looking at some of the worst epidemics and pandemics in history, and we'll see how the Coronavirus compares to the Black Plague and other diseases that were much worse.

A few years ago, when I was in elementary school, we read a book about yellow fever. (Fever 1793 by Laurie Halse Anderson.) As a 10 year old, hearing about the symptoms and what they would do to try and cure it, I was spooked. One example was, the main character described just seeing a cart roll through the city. But the cart was full of corpses. Another example, this family’s son got it, and the doctors said there was nothing they could do. So they said goodbye, and kicked him out of the house.

@Kira McCoy I've haven't seen claims that small pox was making a comeback, but other illnesses that were once thought gone have made a comeback, and anti-vacciners are mainly to blame (regarding cases in developed countries, mostly in the US). Measles, polio and bubonic plague are the 3 main illnesses that are easily prevented with cheap and very effective vaccines. I would put the invention of the vaccine as the top 3 most important discoveries in human history.

10:55 Smallpox is not making a comeback. It is the only disease that has been completely eradicated. Well, except for 2 samples. One, kept at the CDC in Maryland, the other one at a government lab in Moscow.

What I think you were attempting to refer to, is the measles. This disease was also devastating to the American Indians, but nothing like smallpox.
Unfortunately, measles, once eradicated in North America, is indeed making a come back.

Covid is pretty weak, the bubonic plague killed pretty much everyone that got it.

@@myself6296 From what we can tell, data suggests the disease kills ~3% of the infected. That's a massive number. Don't get me wrong. But it pales in comparison to most of the worst pandemics in human history. Smallpox and other diseases brought by Europeans are thought to have killed as many as 90% of Native Americans. The Bubonic Plague killed at least 30% of Europe, with some estimates going as high as 60%.
