It’s great to hear that we normal, little people got tightly restricted, small payments that were kept track of very closely, but the higher up in wealth and social status you look, the looser the restrictions were on who could claim benefits, and how much of a benefit they would receive. True. I was furloughed from my job for two months when covid first hit. Furloughed. Not laid off. I was going to be brought back asap, which I was. I got a letter saying that there was some issue with my unemployment claim and it was fucking impossible to get a hold of anybody to straighten it out. In a way I was lucky bc I was only out for two months, but I also had to dip into my savings for all my bills and everyday expenses, which sucked. Meanwhile everybody else was on unemployment for like a year getting all this extra money every week. I think it was like an extra 600 bucks a week on top of your unemployment. I tried for literally a year to get my money and never did. Ultimately, I was more fortunate than some and survived it. Still pissed me off though. When I did finally get a hold of somebody literally a year later they were like, how long ago was that? Yea, you’re beat. Move on pal. They had an issue and I’m beat. But whatever. I’m over it. It was an interesting thing. It definitely happened. Most people are contractors. Most techs are under their own business and got paid separately.
I think the biggest issue is that they were thinking nickleback was paying a giant crew but then they paid each section of the crew separately because they are all under different businesses and often have their own business or an LLC as mentioned.
They likely overpaid the big names in this and the techs who have their own business struggled. I know loads of techs who left the industry. I know 1 or 2 that tooks min wage jobs at places like starbucks.
Some went it's IT and just never came back. There was and still is a shortage of techs, especially seasoned ones out there.

I think if anything really positive that should come of this is that it shines a light on how poorly these policies are written (and they arent even written by the politicians themselves in the first place) and how it allows for the few instances of abuse like you mentioned. It shows how there needs to be accountability measures in place for people like that who abuse the system, especially for those in the positions of power who put these policies into play in the first place. Especially if you consider that the Govt owes the american citizen a return of trillions of dollars of debt that the govt has incurred

Every company I know that took the PPP loan was like "stay clocked in we don't care there isn't even work for you to do right now, our industry is still crawling instead of running right now". They'd rather pay you to leave the faucet running and watch paint dry than give money back to the government that was promised to be a beneficial thing.
It was supposed to be used to keep the economy going but most companies were not actually profiting at the time and instead losing money so they didn't care if employees were being paid for doing nothing as that money was literally a grenade to most small businesses where if they actually had to pay it back they would go under. The PPP loan was seen as financial suicide for honest businesses after already agreeing to take it cause if you didn't act fast you probably didn't get the loan. I think that's where this politician is trying to go, the government thought it was doing good when it wasn't in fact anything beneficial.
Oh and a lot of companies that were not "essential" stayed open while laying off a lot of employee's letting them collect unemployment checks and those that worked basically helped keep the lights on until PPP loans became a thing. Plenty of companies abused everything as hard as they could, there is a local gym here with boatload of overhead so they drastically increased price of membership after you could start working out again with masks so they wouldn't go under and its a really big gym, multi million dollar building. The key thing was that people had extra disposable income and more free time so they ended up signing up. Price has not gone down since they re opened and they barely increased wage of employees. I wonder how inflation happened let's just pass that off to the consumers while the other gym's that shut down for good sell us their equipment to try to shave off as much debt as possible.

The $1 million for Knotfest seems a little out as if they didn't put it on then it didn't cost them any money, that seems a touch much. The rest seems a little more reasonable but still a bit high. It'd be nice to see military spending go down but there's 2 main reasons it's unlikely to happen. First is jobs and second is brain drain.
Thousands and thousands of people work in the defense sector and no one wants to be responsible for cutting jobs.
And Everytime we have halted production we lose people who are knowledgeable in that specific topic. Also the infrastructure that goes along with it. So if shut hit the fan and we needed to build up production in a hurry we have to have that knowledge in place.
It's no longer like the world wars where military hardware was essentially over sized tractors and bullets. Everything or almost everything is too advanced.
Prime example is NASA. Even with the blue prints for the Saturn rockets we can't build them today. We tried, it failed. Obviously we still make rockets but when that program ended we lost the people that knew how to machine things a certain way or the tricks to assembly. Also didn't help that there wasn't just one group making things so there wasn't a single authority that had all the knowledge.
Again not the best reasons but there is some sense to it. Down sizing would be nice though.

The question isn't if there is fraud and waste, it's if even with the loss from fraud and waste included, did they program have a net benefit.
Yes, of course you want to, within reason, try to limit fraud and waste, because they are inefficiencies. The only way to completely avoid them though is to do nothing.

Also the LLC thing is incase someone wants to sue you, its for legal reasons. They can only sue your LLC and not make you homeless suing you and taking everything you personally own. Thats the big reason anyways. Some people do it for themselves personally if they have X amount of assets and/or make X amount salary. Just keeps you from losing it all in a lawsuit.

Ok so a couple things when establishing yourself as an LLC. First, you should be doing that so you minimize risk to your personal assets. Second, tax benefits. You can establish your LLC as an S Corp which gives you greater protection and benefits but that's how you would use that business to pay yourself a salary as a sole proprietor. The legal paperwork and mumbojumbo is literally $250 and a day of signing stuff with a lawyer (which also costs $). Either way man, yea it's easy to do and you should do that if you are making income independently. Otherwise, you crash a truck while working, drop equipment on a colleague, etc, and they can sue you - leaving your personal assets like your house at risk.

The PPP program was set up very, very quickly, and we knew at the time that it would have problems with fraud in the long run. A program that is set up quickly doesn't have time to establish procedures for accountability - who monitors? What paperwork has to be submitted? Who reviews it? What standard is it held to? What happens if the paperwork doesn't meet the standard? How is all this communicated to the public? Etc. etc. Good policy that answers these questions takes time to plan, just like a big tour. Speed vs. quality - there's a tradeoff.
It's possible some of these bands were scummy, but just as possible they did qualify and follow the rules. I think it kinda sucks to call them out for getting the loans and implying they did something wrong, without any evidence. Someone actually interested in uncovering this could certainly seek out the employees they theoretically had on payroll, or question the band/company, or take other measures. I don't really appreciate the attempt to drag people through the mud without any further due diligence. Not cool, Rand Paul.

1.) it’s mentioned two years later because the data is pulled from Congressional Budget Office numbers which take that much time to let the fiscal year end and reconcile the numbers.
2.) the report isn’t just about one thing. He lists out all of the waste and pork barrel projects that millions are spent on.
I am not trying to invalidate your points. Just wanted to clarify that this wasn’t a report about music artists only. That was just a part of the bigger picture across the entire federal budget, and in this report a lot about the PPP program.

Like if they are on a break, or getting ready to go to the recording studio, surely your not going to need an arena crew then. Don't get me wrong, hats off to those that were on tour, and kept the crew going, but if you were a band that was sitting at home with the wife and kids when it started, you are not going to need a crew.
