Did The Crown Honor Princess Diana's Iconic Fashion Moments (Part 1)

- The Crown is one of Netflix's most popular TV shows, and has been beloved for its telling of the unknown stories of the British Royal Family. But at the same time, it's been lauded by proponents of the British Royal Family for being "fictional". While I haven't discussed any Season of the show on HauteLeMode thus far, Season 4 showcasing Emma Corrin as a young Diana Spencer was something I couldn't not discuss. Diana Spencer-Windsor was truly a fashion icon. She inspired so many through her beauty, philanthropic ventures, mental health struggles, and openess to being human and her fashion choices only bolstered all those other attributes. But to not analyze Diana's fashion moments would be a travesty in my opinion. So we break down some of her biggest looks from the first half of the series. Her semi-controversial photoshoot where her skirt was sheer when she was still a London school aide was a must to be discussed. Diana's sweater game was fire, from her black sheep sweater that predicted her place within the House of Windsor or her pink Peruvian sweater that showcased her early independence and resistance to adhere to the staunch rules of Royal life. We discuss how Amy Roberts, the costume designer for The Crown, was able to honor Diana's most memorable sartorial moments but also intertwined her lesser remembered moments in a way that enhances the story. We also get into some of Diana's choices in jewelry and how that changed her perception from within the Royal family. We also breakdown Diana's iconic wedding dress, the pomp and circumstance of the 1980's and it's effect on such a bodacious dress, as well as it's history making properties. Overall, it's hard to ignore the impact Diana had on the Royal family, and how both in real life and in the show, her clothing was an expresser of her feels and attitude.

Dians dresses are so iconic can't wait to see her revenge dress on the next season!
me too!! and hopefully they maybe explore her relationship with gianni versace a little?
The up yours gress is my favorite outfit that she wore, but that’s not until 1994.
not to mention, Elizabeth debicki is playing her and her regal tall self is gonna look so good in that dress
@@hautelemode there was actually an online talk about a month ago for members of the V&A with the costume designer and the guy who designed the real diana’s wedding dress it was very interesting
I am waiting for the revenge dress.
I hope this series doesnt gloss over Diana's epic night out at the gay club with Freddy Mercury: Just the definition of Iconic.
That never happened babes :/
@@waliyahossain2665 no one knows for sure though; i agree it isn't confirmed enough to put in the show but it also hasn't been disproved
@@waliyahossain2665 boo!
apparently Princess Margret used to frequent gay bars in the London docklands in the 60's so she kind of did it first anyway...so legend goes....
And hope Freddie Mercury will be played by Rami Malek
He did an amazing job in Bohemian Rhapsody
Can't wait to see that interaction😊
diana mentioning she's a country girl at heart is actually a lie, albeit signalled pretty subtly to the audience; she's saying it because she wants philip to like her. it's heavily established later in the series that she's actually a city girl, who is desperately unhappy in charles' isolated country house.
she’s unhappy in the country house because it’s near camillas estate, I think that’s the major reason why she hates it there
@@anip.1609 I think it’s both reasons!
@@anip.1609 Pretty sure there was an official Netflix video saying she said to get Philip to like her so he'll approve of her match with Charles - it's a sign she does, to an extent, know how much she can charm people, which she tries to use for the benefit of the Crown and Charles but...
@@cookiemonster59263 it's not a lie when she tells it. at that point she'd grown up on a country estate. interesting that you read it as manipulative though, it is also possible that if she'd lied it had been in an earnest effort to make a connection with the father of the man she was interested in, especially considering her strained relationship with her own father.
@@chloee.6495 Oh I don't necessarily read it as manipulative myself. Personally I view more as an exaggeration of the truth - Diana is technically, yes, a country girl, but she isn't a country girl in the way Philip wants. We also know that Diana never really liked running around in the mud so it feels like a part of it was her giving him the answer he wanted to hear at the very least. Sort of like not telling your partner's parents that you being a "dancer" means you're a stripper 😂
your comments about how luxurious their "outdoorsy" outfits look got me to realize that they literally go to balmoral for glamping. but they dont stay in a fancy tent or a cozy cabin...they glamp in a castle.
A very cold and damp castle.

Her wedding dress is hideous but for some reason I love it. I love how big and extra it is, even the wrinkles add charm. I can’t believe they did all that work to recreate it only to show it for about 5 seconds smh.
That was just the style. My aunt had a similar dress when she got married, and I’m like: “Whyyy! 😫” I look back at my mom’s old photos from the 1980’s, and the makeup and hair was over the top. But like you, I love all of it because it brings back a sense of nostalgia that can never be duplicated. I’m sure we will look back at 2020 and cringe at the trends, clothing, and makeup. Lol.
First off you have to remember that it was 1981 but it didn't really matter because her dress wasn't indicative of any particular decade. Her dress was designed after a fairy tale princess from any story book. Big sleeves, huge skirt, and tiny waist. Silk, lace, pearls, and rhinestones. It's timeless. I thought it was perfect for the cathedral. A smaller dress, and she would have been swallowed up by the church. It needed to be big and grand. This was the heir to the throne. Everything was "extra". And to those thinking she was so wrinkled.... raw silk does this. It's the beauty of the fabric. But notice how perfect she looked after David fluffed her up and smoothed out those wrinkles. I think this was a huge success for the Emmanuelle,s. I also loved her black strapless engagement gown which they also did.
the overalls + sweater look is honestly still great if you're a gay who brunches, and I would wear that outfit in a heartbeat

right??? How are all our mum's so obsessed with her
For real gurl, you'll be catching me redhanded searching up anything about Diana if you looked at my phone search history. Please, somebody get me outta this rabbit hole! (Jk, pls don't)
@@narakalyan4212 When I was a child, her face was everywhere, and I always read something about her in my grandma’s collection of tabloids. She was also in a lot of the fashion portions of tabloids.
I was a kid in the 90's and she was always on the cover of magazines back in the day. Everyone wanted to see what she was going to wear next.
Kinda like the Kardashians now.
So this is a mum thing? My mother and my grandmother ADORE her. And they despise Charles lmao.
Please also do one on Beth Harmon in the Queen’s Gambit!!
I was about to comment this haha I agree
Mina le did a great analysis
Please ❤️
FOR SURE😍😍😍
YESSSS
My Mom's wedding dress...along with every other woman getting married in the mid 80s was inspired by Princess Diana's wedding dress.
Same with my mother's lol
From what I've watched and understood on the first episodes Diana wore only green outfits ( the mad tree , the dress , the green jacket ) it resemble to the Growth the Life and the new beginning and Charles saw Diana as his new beginning , then when she started to develop feeling for Charles there was some red details in her green outfits then it became completely Red ( red resemble to love , sex , emotions...) It's like she started to change from the innocent virgin little girl to a grown woman and the emotions she developed to Charles , after that she wore a lot of pink and the pink is the washed out version of red like her marriage is getting weaker , then she started wearing a lot of blue clothes as a resemble of the emptiness and the cold relationship with her husband and the royal family and also the depression sickness and her mental state
and the last dress of the show was black so that makes sense
Damn that's deep
Not Luke insulting cottagecore lesbian fashion without realizing it. 2:50
Lol
Am I the only one who thinks OG Diane wore it much better? Having the pictures side by side make it look like a virgin vs chad meme.
yup, exactly!
Totally!
“It shouldn’t be used by others to hurt us....well unless the outfit is ugly” 😂
I honestly watched the Crown for Diana's outfits
Same also wanted to see how they interpret Charles Diana and freakin Camilla
@@heartannette7441 Yes indeed, me too!
Not me failing 3 classes and still deciding to watch this instead...
The ring was actually harry’s but he gave it to William with the idea of seeing a part of her mother on the throne (being Kate the future Queen). At least that what i read
Apparently the brothers decided that whoever got engaged first would get the ring
Wow 😯
Yes. Harry inherited the ring, but gave it to William to propose to Kate.
If that’s true, that’s honestly very sweet. I don’t really care for the royal family after everything they did to Diana, but I am happy that Diana’s boys seem to have a nice relationship with each other and are good to one another. It’s so hard to lose a parent so young.
That's what he said in the video.
We all know damn well that Harry Styles would wear the floral cardigan and overall look, lol
And we would Eat. It. Up.
The early clothing before and around her wedding was actually a uniform worn by a group of people called Sloane Ranger trend. A group of wealthy young things that did not need to work but some did. It was traditional clothing but very expensive clothing that everyone yearned to be able to afford. But this was very much around the credit boom of the 80s and people used there credit cards and bought this trend to appear wealthy.
I actually recently bought the Sloane Ranger handbook to understand the subculture a bit more!’
@@hautelemode it was considered very elegant after the 70s bright purples and pinks and platforms. We all bought pearls. This was when flat shoes made an appearance too. It looked great at the time, but maybe too much alcohol in me. We didn’t have drugs in the 80s so drinking was a big thing. Oh and we bought expensive cars with our new credit availability.
@@minooverdi5459 It was? It looks sooo preppy & uptight. Getting bad flashbacks of junior high blouses and pressed jeans. I wouldn't let my mom put me in that stuff as a kid. No puffy sleeves!
@@foxycinnamon7307 it was after the seventies that we had mad colours, spandex jumpsuits, the various romantics, New Romantics, it was garish and out there and the roller skates at clubs nearly killed me. Then when we all had money (credit) we saw the wealthy in there sweet outfits and flat shoes. I had 6 inch platforms in purple and blue. The shops clicked and started churning out replicas that we could affordable but we wanted the real thing. We cut our hair short as the Sloane did. You only had long hair if you were a child or lived through the 60s. It was an amazing time to be young. We could be anybody and do anything we wanted and we did. I regret nothing except dancing with roller skates at discos. That was idiotic.
@@minooverdi5459 I adored the New Romantic style, all my favorite bands broke up in '82 or '83, so I got it all second hand. The 70s were such a great time for style -- we had 70s parties and bought the clothes, played the music, thought we were fab in platforms and aped the 60s as well. The preppy look was kinda flash in the pan & so expensive unless you went to thrift stores. I was all over the map and still love all black, b & w, over the top dressing up! I regret nothing except some eyebrow experiments : ) I must get that book on Sloane style - I remember reading about Sloane Rangers.
The scene with the mad tree outfit never happened. But Charles was dating her sister when she was 16!
We know
I also love how the coat is essentially her armour, she takes it off believing she'll be vulnerable and safe only to be verbally battered by the family.
I would kill to see a deep dive into all of the Crown's outfits
the press already knew about charles and diana when the sheer skirt photo was taken, a photographer went around schools looking for the one she worked at then asked for a photo of her
Absolutely love this video, this kinda stuff proves exactly why your fashion critiques aren't just riff raff but a product of some actual knowledge
Yes, he did his homework! I lived in that time and was a designer as well so I wondered if he would be able to really address it properly. He did!
They did an amazing job on recreating Diana’s fashion. I just felt Diana’s clothes were more expensive looking than the show. Diana was AMAZING.
Im still waiting for the part two

Why did people start saying "comfortability" when the word comfort exists?
This!
Just like conversate vs converse
@@RomanZolanski123 so one is a word and one isn’t. Lol
@@RomanZolanski123 that one drives me up a freaking wall!!!!
@@RomanZolanski123 Just say talk.
clothing she wore had / has such a strong voice of hers, the brand & fashion fads turn mute on her & become timeless evidence of an icon Diana was & still is. She didn't go along with the time, the time was sculpting around her & even more amazingly how it happened without her doing some hard core calculations to achieve any of it - she was just her.
pearl necklaces are actually a staple in the spencer family , her mother and sister wore them alot and so did she. there a video called diana's collections of treasures that goes in lenghts about her accessories
Maybe you could look at Beth Harmon’s fashion in the Queen’s Gambit, she has a real style development
god I love that yellow floral cardigan she wears when she meets Charles in the middle of the street
They asked advice from David Diana wedding dress designer. And he told them to have fun with it!
👍Excellent assessment of the psychology of dress...I watched her get married when I was a little girl and regardless of her status and wealth, she lived such a sad life ... the royals seemed to treat her like a brood mare, so awful💔
Can you please do a review of the fashion in The Queen‘s Gambit? They are so stunning!
I can’t believe you said you’d like to see the Queen in lakers jerseys and shorts LMFAOOO
This video is making me liveee! Diana was and still is an icon now and forever.

When is part 2 coming?? ☹️☹️
For an 18 year old, her style is impeccable and iconic
beth harmon's fashion on the queen's gambit!!
I absolutely love the overalls/cardigan outfit. I also think it helps the show achieves a dramatic effect of making the audience feel immediately sympathetic with her as we all know that the young and innocent girl we are seeing on the screen will not make it out alive.
I hope they feature Diana's iconic red-and-pink look she had when visiting India! Tons of knowitalls were gasping for air by Diana's choice to pair Red with PINK! OH THE HUMANITY!!!!
In fact, combining red, pink and orange is very common in India.
I love how they represented her fashion, I just wish there was more! The 80s was such a fabulous decade and wish they showed at least one other royal tour.
I must say that i love these videos where you are more analytic, especially this one.
When i started to watch your channel i was sometimes taken aback a little by the snarky remarks and while these videos are still fun, i feel like with this content i actually learn something.
So yeah thanks for this excellent quarantine content!
I’ve been DYING for this video! Well done and well researched, Luke! Can’t wait for Part 2 ❤️
I love the narrative breakdown through costuming. So cool.

This is probably my favorite video you have ever done.... I'm not super into fashion by your standards but how you handled this subject was so well spoken and well versed. I appreciate your attention to detail on history and facts. You damned adorable ass......🤷♂️🤦♂️
Loved it! Can't wait for the next episode!!!
THE EPISODE I NEEDED
Can you do one on Princess Margaret in the first 2 seasons? I was obsessed with everything she wore
Always love your reviews! Insightful and bold
I love that they added some of Diana’s iconic looks with a twist. But I feel like they over exaggerated her looks in the Crown instead of focusing on the real Diana’s processing growth in fashion.
But overall, I’m very happy what they did with her looks in the show. So excited for Kristen Stewart’s portrayal next!
She brought old fashion sweaters and wear it flawlessly... that's true people's princess. She know how to accessorize things and practical. Love her charities and goodwill which she highlighted vast fields whilst there are little to exact no media put their attentions before. For example her trip to NY she went to slum rather than glamorous places in town. Emma did an astounding job portraying her. For someone who grew up in 90s... all these little memories rushing in! On top of these her motherhood shows to William & Harry.... Love it!
Loooove the analysis, so full of insight and interesting information! Thank you ,:D
I would love to see more of these videos! I really like seeing your input on costumes! Not only Netflix series but other movies like legally blonde, clueless, Harry Potter, gossip girl etc💭💓
I would love to see in the second part of this video your take on the current influence of Lady Diana Spencer in fashion. I mean granny sweaters, THAT dress and all the pearls she wore. I think today more than ever we're seeing a comeback of this Diana Effect and instead of people wearing a (tragically) campy sweaters they and WE should at least know how it's done🤷🏽♀️. I thinks that's the most important detail of Diana's fashion. The could've been HORRIBLE but with a sense of wit and fun she made them look divine
The Crown's clothing choices feel like the mod cloth version of what Diana actually wore.
Yes I’ve been waiting for this! 👏❤️👏
I would love to see your favorite looks of Diana. She was a FASHION ICON 💙
I love these TV show reviews
Hi, I absolutely enjoyed your video! Your insight into the historical background and your take on the costume designer´s choices was super interesting as usual! And although this is a 21 min video, it seemed to pass so quickly and left me wanting more!
I also would have loved to here you talk about the black dress Diana wore in the very last scene of the season as they are taking the Christmas family photo (all the foreshadowing and what the dress symbolizes)...
Lots of love from Germany
I love this video!!! I recently discovered your channel and love the diversity of subject you canvas via your obvious and very articulate love for fashion. (The “Trojan Horse” allusion? Damn good).
I do have a comment regarding your historical details in the context of Robert’s interpretation through the costume. I’m a big fan of how you’re incorporating the emotional & topical into her costume and Diana’s real life choices, and I think you could sharpen it even further by staying tuned to all the interview coming out with be cast & crew of The Crown. There were a few clashing opinions over Diana’s choices and how they’re influenced by the atmosphere she finds herself in, combined with her personal style/experiences. One that pokes out to me was about her “country girl” proclamation. In an interview with Emma, she commented on how she didn’t quite believe Diana’s self description of “country girl,” but was instead in admiration of Diana’s ability to meld and quickly adapt like a Chameleon in the most difficult of habitats. I think the actor’s opinions, as well as the opinions of the directors (I haven’t seen any with the costume dept yet), could add interesting insight into your review. They did study the characters in prep after all. Although, the actors do stress that this is Morgan’s interpretation, even going so far as to call it an alternate story to reality. But obviously, the whole production crew is pulling from reality in an attempt to pay adequate homage to the Royal’s complicated lives.
Just a thought! I love your attention to detail, and I think it might interest you to see how the crew interprets the iconic costumes & actions as well!! Again, big fan-really looking forward to part 2.
Diana was so naturally stunning.
Hey, you! I find your craft very inspirational. Thank you!!!
i waited SO badly for this
I was a huge fan of Diana here in Belfast NI. Not so much for her being a Royal but because I shared the "Black Sheep" syndrome with her. I would love to see the controversy she created and when she actually didnt care anymore and started to do her own thing and sometimes even defy the Royal family.... I was... LIVING FOR IT ! When she was killed.. you have no idea what the tension and grief was like in the UK . The atmosphere was palpable . At the time I worked for Belfast City Council. We were all given the Saturday morning off .. PAID. TIME OFF to watch her funeral. That was hundred and hundreds of workers throughout all departments. She was a style icon for sure. When she got it wrong the Paps jumped all over it.. but when she got it right.... GIANNI VERSACE.. she was not a Princess... she was a QUEEN ! Sadly missed..even still. R.I.P.
I love your videos so much, you’re so professional and informed it’s so entertaining but also educational

Great job, this was sooooo good❤️
I would love if you reviewed the outfits from season 1-3 not just the wedding dresses but the other important fashion moments. I'm watching The Crown right now because I heard Diana would be in season 4 lol
Ok, so I was in my teens during the 80s and there was a style called sloane ranger, I think Diana dressed in this style sometimes. IDK if The Crown really shows that aspect of Diana's style, Sloane Ranger was sort of country luxury dressing but adapted to in town? In any case you asked for what you may have missed and that's what came to my mind! 😉
I must tell you that your commentary is excellent, both through your understanding of Diana's history, and as a clever analysis of the series' symbolism. I find you very sensitive and clever in your comments, one would believe you were a part of that era, which you obviously were not :) . One of your best videos, IMHO.
I literally just finished an assignment and wanted to chill for a bit 😩💙 thank you Luke
I've been waiting for this video ever since you commented on Mina Le's video

Oh this was wonderful! I have always loved Diana. She and I share a birthday! This was such a great video! I always love how analytical your takes are!
My grandmother knitted a similar sweater loosely based off of the black sheep one, except it's even more wonderfully eighties style with puffy sleeves. I still wear it :)

You need to mention in the next video the Sloane Ranger style that Diana was the epitome of in the 80s. Thats an important part of the history of her look from that time period.
Really want to see your take on the costuming in Selena the Netflix series. Or Netflix vs the 97 film vs. reality.
