She was told by Charles to change the dress but she refused. It can also represent the "death" of her marriage.
I also find it interesting how it makes her look more similar to the other royals, while it is her own style, just like the rest of the family, while at the beginning she stood out a lot more. I felt like it was a reference to the chat between Margaret and Elizabeth saying that she would either "bend" and get used to her new life, or break. She bended, after all.
One of the first things I remember hearing about Lady Di was that she visited an AIDS unit and shook the hand of a dying victim, making skin contact at a time when that was very feared and stigmatized. It helped change the public perception of AIDS and HIV. Sometimes I think about what more she could have accomplished if she was still living now.

I never knew much about Diana but learning here that she would be so considerate and conscientious with her clothing when visiting certain hospitals, so much as to even wear velvet when visiting the blind so that she would feel soft and comforting... it has just undone me
She also did a lot to combat the stigma surrounding AIDS, when she was seen holding a patient's hand without a glove. She seemed like such a compassionate person, and it's so sad that she died so young.
I remember an interview of Princess Diana's main advisor said that the palace gave Princess Diana as list of charities she can support or be ambassador of. But Princess Diana instead chose bigger causes like AIDS, homelessness, land mines, etc All of which were frowned upon by the palace as they want charities that are perceived as "neutral".
The revenge dress was also iconic because royal woman don't wear black in public except when mourning, Diana wearing black in a public occasion was a clear signal to royal family Also, I find it really funny that they showed that Diana didn't know in what order to great royal ladies. Her grandmothers of both sides were ladies in waiting to Queen Mother and Diana was an aristocrat. So, she might’ve known how to behave around royalty 😊
Royal women wear black in public often. There are very few rules with clothing. You should look appropriate, and if there is a dress code (black tie, white tie, etc), then you stick to the dress code. Otherwise, wear what you want. No one cares.
The whole not knowing how to greet members of the royal family was similar to the Balmoral thing with thatcher. It most likely did not happen irl, but the idea is to show how inadequate Diana felt, and to be able to build throughout the season this narrative of Diana not being supported or accepted by the royals :)

I remember the press going insane when reporting the rare sighting of a black outfit worn by a prominent royal family member when I was younger, or even in recent years. Even now it's not that common, and black clothes are very rarely adorned.

I saw someone on TikTok suggesting that women of colour often related deeply to the feelings of being unwelcomed or criticised by not only the system of power they grew into, but also their in-laws and their husband's families, and used Princess Diana's story as a way of feeling less alone in their own personal struggles. @@alavenderfawn4025 I think that is an important point and this is something people think about now. At the time her charity work wasn't in vogue and she certainly brought the spotlight to many important causes. I'm sure she meant well with a lot of these causes, but she was also naive. Ex: Her work with Mother Theresa. I think she wasn't content with just doing good to territories under the crown, she wanted to try and do something she perceived greater.
I think there's lots of identifying elements: Loving being a mother, loving her children, enjoying giving comfort and love to others who did not have it, enjoying helping out families & communities, being a pioneer through care, being self-less, being soft & warm while surrounded by assholes ,loving fashion, etc And also the darker aspects: Coming from potentially abusive households, being married into a family that follows restrictive and harmful traditions, having to endure horrible men, being cheated on, being told how to be and how to act at all times from a young age, getting married too young, having children too young, etc.
When you described how Diana would choose her wardrobe when meeting children or blind people etc. almost brought tears to my eyes. She was just an overall sweet soul.

In the 90s I was quite young in one of the apartments my mom and I lived in a friends mother and a friend were very big fans of her. I vividly remember the morning she passed away because the friend called down crying to my other friends mom.

Yes, people often forget Diana was aristocracy which is why she was seen as suitable wife for the Crown Prince, she would have known the society etiquette and lifestyle stuff, moved in similar circles and probably assumed to expected that Charles could cheat since it was extremely common in those circles and at least not to want a divorce. But times were changing with that and she should have been able to be upset. However she really would have known the etiquette.
That is a bit that's, imho, not meant to be taken as a fact. In that scene, I think they are beginning to build the narrative of Diana feeling inadequate and the royals not being supportive of her/ helping her integrate into the family. She probably didn't mess that up irl, but it's a way to start developing a plot point that is very relevant to the story later! Similar to how thatcher was treated in the Balmoral episode, most likely things didn't happen that way, but they just needed to really show how different both of them were :)
Many things about the show are far fetched ( changed or straight up invented ), that's one of the big problems of the show ( in my mind ) as they aren't clear up front that this is in fact a drama, based on real events, and most definitely NOT a documentary.
The Crown is such a strange show to me. It's a historical drama about people who are all still alive. It's not like Rocketman,where Elton John actually worked with the creators to tell his story. It's kinda just like, dramatized fan fiction of people who again,are still alive. Like, what does Prince Harry think of it? Does it bother him to see this depiction of his mother? Does he like it? He seems to hate the media for the way it ruined his childhood, and quite frankly, killed his mother. Again, just, so weird. If they decided to keep going would they include Prince Andrew hanging out with Epstein and assaulting children? It's just, so weird.
There is no evidence that Prince Andrew was part of Epstein's little paedophile group so why would they include it? To do so would provoke a lawsuit for defamation.
My mom told me to grow up like princess diana because she was kind and thoughtful person. So she was my role model ever since. I vividly remember when princess di passed. My dad and I came home from my softball game and that was the first thing my mom said to us when we walked in the door. She was devastated. She loved Diana and often mimicked her style. I remember she wore a red velvet version of Diana’s revenge dress to my aunt’s wedding and she looked stunning. She also copied Diana’s hairstyle which made her look so much like her.

So hard to see the abuse, endless cheating, eating disorders the Princess dealt with. The scene where he screams at her was the worst. Being a 90s british kid, you’re basically indoctrinated from a very young age to have the upmost respect and adoration for the royal family and it’s really only recently that I’ve been unlearning that and questioning the point of monarchy- BUT, that being the case, I still love and respect Diana. Now bear in mind I was born in 1993, so by the time she died I can’t act like I knew who she was or understood the significance of it. But my older sister was devastated, she ended up writing letters on tissue paper about how special and wonderful Diana was in her mourning. Just 90sbritishkidzthingz
No, we aren't indoctrinated from a young age to love the royal family. I hardly knew of the royal family growing up, I was born in 93 too, and my first exposure wasn't until I was 14/15. I even went to a middle-class primary school. I like the royal family because I've done my research into them over the last few years and come to respect them but if you asked me what I thought about them when I was 14 I would have shrugged.
@@peachesandcream8753 tbf on the one hand probably a generalisation on my part but on the other I do think our class and whereabouts in the U.K. will have impacted that. I come from a working class background and lived in the north. I vividly remember tons of news stories all about the royals, my family always getting emotional about the queens speeches, our primary school handing out a gold jubilee coin (and this had a definite impact because years later I did work experience in that same primary school where a little boy there showed that same coin off to say that his dad gave it to him from when he was in primary school). So a lot of working class northern areas do have a sort of national pride that does differ from southern sensibilities and middle class values. But of course these are generalisations, I’m sure while my neighbourhood growing up was brimming with national pride and supporting the monarchy that someone of a similar class rank and area may not have cared or known much. But I’m basing this on my anecdotal experiences that I noticed in my area with my peers
@@MrTwentington I'm from the working class in the South East (I went to a middle class primary and working class secondary) and I don't remember any mention of the royals growing up. Maybe it's a northern thing and we in the South are pretty blasé about them since the South is heavily connected to the Royals? I mean, I literally live a stones throw away from Hampton Court palace. I knew of the historical royal family, since I love history, but I never heard anything about the modern royals. I don't think I ever watched a Queens Speech until I was 15.
I’m a 2000s kid, and I learned about the royals when I was 8- and I was a massive fan of Kate at the time because of how beautiful she was and I wanted to be a royal myself, I guess it’s where you live that creates your impression on them. I mean I live in Scotland and everyone doesn’t care THAT much but they love Diana and seem to love good ol’ Liz but my mother isn’t a big fan of the rest of the royals (not including Diana’s sons and the sons wives) because she hates how queen Liz and the rest of them didn’t want to do anything for Diana after she passed and the fact that they were forced to be upset that Diana died as they seemed to not care. I personally believe that it depends on the area and the people in the area that pressure you or not into admiring the royals.

The curator for the Kensington Palace exhibition undoubtedly has a Royal bias in her commentary. For one, it is ridiculous for her to say that we know little of Diana due to lack of footage of her speaking. There are hours and hours of interviews with Diana used for her 1992 biography by Andrew Morton and in the subsequent documentary made, which is now available on Netflix. Of course, Lynn, hired by the Royal family for the exhibition, does not acknowledge these interviews as insight into Diana because it is unflattering for the Royal family. Similarly, Lynn attributes the change in Diana's silhouette preference over the years to a simple aesthetic choice, rather than acknowledging the suffering that played such a huge role in Diana's style evolution - suffering caused by the Royal family.
When those interviews came out meany people at the time said it was the first time they heard her speak. The royals almost never give interviews. To have those kinds of tapes of a royal family member is unprecedented. I don’t think it’s a fair critic when those tapes are all we have. Contrast it to how much we have on any other head of state, for example.

Yes, the tapes were willingly made by Diana. No one is denying that she had agency or that they exist however the royal family took away a lot of that agency including her ability to do interviews or do any public speaking. Her first solo interview didn’t happen until after she left the royal family and only took place because a lot of people were willing to go behind the backs of upper management at the BBC (who were in with the royal family). As for the interview tapes you mention: they came out after she died. When the book those tapes were made for came out the book was banned, and she denied having anything to do with it. She was playing a PR game so she could get a divorce. She won. And I think that Charles is with out question a pig, an idiot, and a wealthy spoiled brat and I don’t think he should be king. But it is worth noting that we really don’t have a lot from her and that is by design. The royal family almost never give interviews now, and they give more interviews then they gave back then. That’s Di’s influences, she forced the family to change. But they did have a lot of control over her and they didn’t let her do a lot of public speaking or interviews And to say that a researcher is biased in favour of the royal family because she points out this lack, I just don’t think that’s true.

I gave a number of reasons I think the curator of the exhibition is biased toward the royal family, the main reason as such is 3. SHE WAS HIRED BY THE ROYAL FAMILY. Do you honestly think the Royal Family would hire a curator that wasn't biased toward them? Do you think the curator would ever talk about Diana or her past in a way that was unflattering toward the Royal Family?
The costume design was superb this season, along with the acting. Margaret Thatcher's costumes were amazing too! I was born in 88' so I barely remember Lady Di, but I have a very vivid memory of the day she died: I was watching TV in my grandparents house at night when the news was broadcasted; first I thought it was a joke and then I became sad. I guess that even at 9 years old and from a country far away from the UK I knew Diana was an important and cherised person!
Fellow 1988'er here. I can't say I knew Diana that well either, but I did look up to her, if nothing else because she was a real, living, real life princess. In fact, she was the only one I knew. When she died, it was kind of a reality check for me. Princesses weren't immortal. Princesses, like other people, could DIE. It certainly didn't help that by age 9 I had had 3 kinda close relatives die and would lose another one by the time I was 12. Probably messed me up a bit, now that I think about it.
Something I love about the outfit reproduction at the the start of the season particulary is that they aren't worn in their *famous* contexts (like the pink gingham pants and sweater) but that just makes them feel more like actual wardrobe items, that diana would wear more than once.
I’m Australian so the royal family kind of has an impact here and when Diana died my mother fell to the floor in absolute shock. Which says a lot about the impact she had. My mother(she would know she was born in 65) always says she inspired a lot of fashion in the 80s. Also the actor for Charles is like way too attractive to be Charles. Charles was like kind of attractive at best but not that good looking.
When Diana was in Australia for the tour she went out on a boat ride and my family was also out on the bay. My mother was the only child on the boat and distinctly remembers being waved at directly by Diana. Like one of those waves where you crouch a little and do a little wave so mum knew it was for her. She was so freaking happy!
another thing to add about ending with the black dress: in the documentary "Diana: in her own words" she also mentioned that she wore a black sweetheart gown to her first public appearance. She felt that black was a very grown up color and wanted to emulate that, but Charles asked her if she was really gonna wear that because only people in mourning wear black. Charles also said that the sweetheart neckline was "revealing" but she didn't find it odd because it's something someone her age would dress. Knowing that, I could see why that would be a color she went back to when she became more rebellious and decided to expose the royal family.

I'd love it if you could do an analysis of Queen Elizabeth's first two seasons style! The outfits are really accurate, and like Diana's, they show her personal growth, maturing into the S4 Queen.
In the beginning of her Royal life Diana tried to only wear British designers and used many different styles. After she began to travel and do engagements on her own, she started only using one or two of her favorite designers and that's how she eventually developed more of a signature style in the 90's that was more of the professional woman look instead of the original 1980's romantic Princess look. I was in junior high then and I remember how much of a worldwide superstar she was.

Since that new season has come out all I’ve seen is people just hating on prince Charles (they do have a point but they do forget that it still is a dramatization and not a documentary) when Diana was having affairs as well etc. In the end i always felt like they were just not right for each other

My mum also has no time for the monarchy in general (as do I, I’m a staunch republican, and I think Australia should go monarchy-free as soon as possible). But I remember her being very sad when Princess Di died. I was sad too- for all that o could understand at the age of ten. Most of what I knew about Diana came from her fashion, and her humanitarianism, so it’s no wonder I was sad. That, and just how terrible and terrifying her death was- chased by the people who literally hounded her to death. Her death did bring on new laws regarding paparazzi though, throughout the world.

I also saw the black and angular "tux" style dress, almost 100% the opposite of the iconic wedding dress, as being a symbol that she is now "married to herself" almost in the style of the famous Elizabeth the First quote. She has now completed both halves of a formal wedding pair at the start and end of the season.
Harry's fashion is heavily inspired from the 70s and early 80s which is a prime inspiration of the fashion style Gucci leans to at the moment. P.S: I love it!

Everyone loved princess Diana. Compared to today’s standards we had so little information about her, only what you’d see on the TV. But I remember even my mom, who had almost no interest in celebrities, cried when princess Diana died. She was just a good and noble person over all.
Not everyone loved her. And the media made her portrayal overly sympathetic only after her death. The same media was hating on her a lot while she was alive
My mum said that when Diana died we were out shopping. It came over the radio and apparently you could have heard a pin drop because everyone went silent.
In the UK not everyone loved her. I think that was part of the problem because many, but not all, of those people funded the tabloids who went after her for negative stories. Also you’ve got to remember that a not insignificant part of the population is indifferent to the Royal Family, including her.
The biggest disappointment for me this season was the choice to not film the wedding. They made the dress. The wedding was one of the biggest moments in their relationship and for the UK. It's a pity that the designer had to take 14 weeks to make the dress, only for it to be shown for like 5 minutes. The wardrobe for this season was pretty good overall. I though they did Thatcher well and Charles and the other male characters were good. The Queen had some good clothes but I think they missed the mark on some of her outfits. Diana had some of the most iconic looks in history and some of the dresses were good, but others were very lacking. I also thought that Emma Corrin played Diana pretty well, although I think she was a little too pouty at times.
The creator of the series said he didn’t add in the wedding because anybody could go online and watch the wedding. He said he was more interested in filming the more “behind the scenes” moments.
I really wanna get into this show. I love how many time jumps it has, abandoning one setting for the next and thoroughly exploring the eras and their aesthetics. It's so odd to see a legit drama so frequently replace its cast.

I was born in 1990 and even I remember how hugely influential Diana was back then. I used to think she was the most beautiful woman in the world because she reminded me of my mother.
I was a child when she died. I still remember the images of her car crashed and all the news about her funeral. It was a sad event, and it was so devastating watching her children in mourning.
I'm a huge fan of the podcast "You're Wrong About" and recently they did a deep dive on the life and death of Diana. Highly recommend giving it a listen! But most importantly, great work! I loved this video.
I hope everyone remembers this. Don’t blame everything on Charles. It’s fact that Diana had an affair before he did. She slept with her bodyguard. The way their marriage ended was on both parts. It’s unfair just to degrade Camilla who turned down the princess of wales title in respect for Diana.

Royal women wear black in public often. There are very few rules with clothing. You should look appropriate, and if there is a dress code (black tie, white tie, etc), then you stick to the dress code. Otherwise, wear what you want. No one cares.
The whole not knowing how to greet members of the royal family was similar to the Balmoral thing with thatcher. It most likely did not happen irl, but the idea is to show how inadequate Diana felt, and to be able to build throughout the season this narrative of Diana not being supported or accepted by the royals :)

I remember the press going insane when reporting the rare sighting of a black outfit worn by a prominent royal family member when I was younger, or even in recent years. Even now it's not that common, and black clothes are very rarely adorned.

At the time her charity work wasn't in vogue and she certainly brought the spotlight to many important causes. I'm sure she meant well with a lot of these causes, but she was also naive. Ex: Her work with Mother Theresa. I think she wasn't content with just doing good to territories under the crown, she wanted to try and do something she perceived greater.

Coming from potentially abusive households, being married into a family that follows restrictive and harmful traditions, having to endure horrible men, being cheated on, being told how to be and how to act at all times from a young age, getting married too young, having children too young, etc.

In the 90s I was quite young in one of the apartments my mom and I lived in a friends mother and a friend were very big fans of her. I vividly remember the morning she passed away because the friend called down crying to my other friends mom.
I was born in 1990 and was 7 years old when she died so I didn't have much time or consciousness to know about her when she was alive

I find it hard to believe the daughter of an Earl wouldn't know the etiquette of greeting the royal family members. That scene seems far fetched.
Yes, people often forget Diana was aristocracy which is why she was seen as suitable wife for the Crown Prince, she would have known the society etiquette and lifestyle stuff, moved in similar circles and probably assumed to expected that Charles could cheat since it was extremely common in those circles and at least not to want a divorce. But times were changing with that and she should have been able to be upset. However she really would have known the etiquette.
That is a bit that's, imho, not meant to be taken as a fact. In that scene, I think they are beginning to build the narrative of Diana feeling inadequate and the royals not being supportive of her/ helping her integrate into the family. She probably didn't mess that up irl, but it's a way to start developing a plot point that is very relevant to the story later! Similar to how thatcher was treated in the Balmoral episode, most likely things didn't happen that way, but they just needed to really show how different both of them were :)
Many things about the show are far fetched ( changed or straight up invented ), that's one of the big problems of the show ( in my mind ) as they aren't clear up front that this is in fact a drama, based on real events, and most definitely NOT a documentary.
But...it's the crown. Almost every scene is a fantasy for metaphor sometimes because they can't mention facts since royalty still exists.
The Crown is such a strange show to me. It's a historical drama about people who are all still alive. It's not like Rocketman,where Elton John actually worked with the creators to tell his story. It's kinda just like, dramatized fan fiction of people who again,are still alive. Like, what does Prince Harry think of it? Does it bother him to see this depiction of his mother? Does he like it? He seems to hate the media for the way it ruined his childhood, and quite frankly, killed his mother.
Again, just, so weird. If they decided to keep going would they include Prince Andrew hanging out with Epstein and assaulting children? It's just, so weird.

I vividly remember when princess di passed. My dad and I came home from my softball game and that was the first thing my mom said to us when we walked in the door. She was devastated. She loved Diana and often mimicked her style. I remember she wore a red velvet version of Diana’s revenge dress to my aunt’s wedding and she looked stunning. She also copied Diana’s hairstyle which made her look so much like her.

Being a 90s british kid, you’re basically indoctrinated from a very young age to have the upmost respect and adoration for the royal family and it’s really only recently that I’ve been unlearning that and questioning the point of monarchy- BUT, that being the case, I still love and respect Diana. Now bear in mind I was born in 1993, so by the time she died I can’t act like I knew who she was or understood the significance of it. But my older sister was devastated, she ended up writing letters on tissue paper about how special and wonderful Diana was in her mourning. Just 90sbritishkidzthingz
No, we aren't indoctrinated from a young age to love the royal family. I hardly knew of the royal family growing up, I was born in 93 too, and my first exposure wasn't until I was 14/15. I even went to a middle-class primary school. I like the royal family because I've done my research into them over the last few years and come to respect them but if you asked me what I thought about them when I was 14 I would have shrugged.
@@peachesandcream8753 tbf on the one hand probably a generalisation on my part but on the other I do think our class and whereabouts in the U.K. will have impacted that. I come from a working class background and lived in the north. I vividly remember tons of news stories all about the royals, my family always getting emotional about the queens speeches, our primary school handing out a gold jubilee coin (and this had a definite impact because years later I did work experience in that same primary school where a little boy there showed that same coin off to say that his dad gave it to him from when he was in primary school). So a lot of working class northern areas do have a sort of national pride that does differ from southern sensibilities and middle class values. But of course these are generalisations, I’m sure while my neighbourhood growing up was brimming with national pride and supporting the monarchy that someone of a similar class rank and area may not have cared or known much. But I’m basing this on my anecdotal experiences that I noticed in my area with my peers

Maybe it's a northern thing and we in the South are pretty blasé about them since the South is heavily connected to the Royals? I mean, I literally live a stones throw away from Hampton Court palace. I knew of the historical royal family, since I love history, but I never heard anything about the modern royals. I don't think I ever watched a Queens Speech until I was 15.
I’m a 2000s kid, and I learned about the royals when I was 8- and I was a massive fan of Kate at the time because of how beautiful she was and I wanted to be a royal myself, I guess it’s where you live that creates your impression on them. I mean I live in Scotland and everyone doesn’t care THAT much but they love Diana and seem to love good ol’ Liz but my mother isn’t a big fan of the rest of the royals (not including Diana’s sons and the sons wives) because she hates how queen Liz and the rest of them didn’t want to do anything for Diana after she passed and the fact that they were forced to be upset that Diana died as they seemed to not care. I personally believe that it depends on the area and the people in the area that pressure you or not into admiring the royals.

The curator for the Kensington Palace exhibition undoubtedly has a Royal bias in her commentary. For one, it is ridiculous for her to say that we know little of Diana due to lack of footage of her speaking. There are hours and hours of interviews with Diana used for her 1992 biography by Andrew Morton and in the subsequent documentary made, which is now available on Netflix. Of course, Lynn, hired by the Royal family for the exhibition, does not acknowledge these interviews as insight into Diana because it is unflattering for the Royal family. Similarly, Lynn attributes the change in Diana's silhouette preference over the years to a simple aesthetic choice, rather than acknowledging the suffering that played such a huge role in Diana's style evolution - suffering caused by the Royal family.
When those interviews came out meany people at the time said it was the first time they heard her speak. The royals almost never give interviews. To have those kinds of tapes of a royal family member is unprecedented. I don’t think it’s a fair critic when those tapes are all we have. Contrast it to how much we have on any other head of state, for example.

Yes, the tapes were willingly made by Diana. No one is denying that she had agency or that they exist however the royal family took away a lot of that agency including her ability to do interviews or do any public speaking. Her first solo interview didn’t happen until after she left the royal family and only took place because a lot of people were willing to go behind the backs of upper management at the BBC (who were in with the royal family). As for the interview tapes you mention: they came out after she died. When the book those tapes were made for came out the book was banned, and she denied having anything to do with it. She was playing a PR game so she could get a divorce.
She won. And I think that Charles is with out question a pig, an idiot, and a wealthy spoiled brat and I don’t think he should be king. But it is worth noting that we really don’t have a lot from her and that is by design. The royal family almost never give interviews now, and they give more interviews then they gave back then.
That’s Di’s influences, she forced the family to change. But they did have a lot of control over her and they didn’t let her do a lot of public speaking or interviews
And to say that a researcher is biased in favour of the royal family because she points out this lack, I just don’t think that’s true.

Do you honestly think the Royal Family would hire a curator that wasn't biased toward them? I was born in 88' so I barely remember Lady Di, but I have a very vivid memory of the day she died: I was watching TV in my grandparents house at night when the news was broadcasted; first I thought it was a joke and then I became sad. I guess that even at 9 years old and from a country far away from the UK I knew Diana was an important and cherised person!

Fellow 1988'er here. I can't say I knew Diana that well either, but I did look up to her, if nothing else because she was a real, living, real life princess. In fact, she was the only one I knew. When she died, it was kind of a reality check for me. Princesses weren't immortal. Princesses, like other people, could DIE.
It certainly didn't help that by age 9 I had had 3 kinda close relatives die and would lose another one by the time I was 12. Probably messed me up a bit, now that I think about it.
Something I love about the outfit reproduction at the the start of the season particulary is that they aren't worn in their *famous* contexts (like the pink gingham pants and sweater) but that just makes them feel more like actual wardrobe items, that diana would wear more than once.
I’m Australian so the royal family kind of has an impact here and when Diana died my mother fell to the floor in absolute shock. Which says a lot about the impact she had. My mother(she would know she was born in 65) always says she inspired a lot of fashion in the 80s. Also the actor for Charles is like way too attractive to be Charles. Charles was like kind of attractive at best but not that good looking.

When Diana was in Australia for the tour she went out on a boat ride and my family was also out on the bay. My mother was the only child on the boat and distinctly remembers being waved at directly by Diana. Like one of those waves where you crouch a little and do a little wave so mum knew it was for her. She was so freaking happy!
another thing to add about ending with the black dress: in the documentary "Diana: in her own words" she also mentioned that she wore a black sweetheart gown to her first public appearance. She felt that black was a very grown up color and wanted to emulate that, but Charles asked her if she was really gonna wear that because only people in mourning wear black. Charles also said that the sweetheart neckline was "revealing" but she didn't find it odd because it's something someone her age would dress. Knowing that, I could see why that would be a color she went back to when she became more rebellious and decided to expose the royal family.

In the beginning of her Royal life Diana tried to only wear British designers and used many different styles. After she began to travel and do engagements on her own, she started only using one or two of her favorite designers and that's how she eventually developed more of a signature style in the 90's that was more of the professional woman look instead of the original 1980's romantic Princess look. I was in junior high then and I remember how much of a worldwide superstar she was.

Most of what I knew about Diana came from her fashion, and her humanitarianism, so it’s no wonder I was sad. That, and just how terrible and terrifying her death was- chased by the people who literally hounded her to death. Her death did bring on new laws regarding paparazzi though, throughout the world.

I am also a child on the 90's and my mom's style was very similar to Diana's, I did knew about her story and I was very happy to see a nice rapresentation of her and her style that were iconic. Great video =D
Everyone loved princess Diana. Compared to today’s standards we had so little information about her, only what you’d see on the TV. But I remember even my mom, who had almost no interest in celebrities, cried when princess Diana died. She was just a good and noble person over all.

Not everyone loved her. And the media made her portrayal overly sympathetic only after her death. The same media was hating on her a lot while she was alive
My mum said that when Diana died we were out shopping. It came over the radio and apparently you could have heard a pin drop because everyone went silent.
In the UK not everyone loved her. I think that was part of the problem because many, but not all, of those people funded the tabloids who went after her for negative stories.
Also you’ve got to remember that a not insignificant part of the population is indifferent to the Royal Family, including her.
The biggest disappointment for me this season was the choice to not film the wedding. They made the dress. The wedding was one of the biggest moments in their relationship and for the UK. It's a pity that the designer had to take 14 weeks to make the dress, only for it to be shown for like 5 minutes. The wardrobe for this season was pretty good overall. I though they did Thatcher well and Charles and the other male characters were good. The Queen had some good clothes but I think they missed the mark on some of her outfits. Diana had some of the most iconic looks in history and some of the dresses were good, but others were very lacking. I also thought that Emma Corrin played Diana pretty well, although I think she was a little too pouty at times.
The creator of the series said he didn’t add in the wedding because anybody could go online and watch the wedding. He said he was more interested in filming the more “behind the scenes” moments.
I’m glad they didn’t film the wedding as you can see the real one over the Internet and imo, shouldn’t be recreated.

I was a child when she died. I still remember the images of her car crashed and all the news about her funeral. It was a sad event, and it was so devastating watching her children in mourning.
I'm a huge fan of the podcast "You're Wrong About" and recently they did a deep dive on the life and death of Diana. Highly recommend giving it a listen!

I hope everyone remembers this. Don’t blame everything on Charles. It’s fact that Diana had an affair before he did. She slept with her bodyguard. The way their marriage ended was on both parts. It’s unfair just to degrade Camilla who turned down the princess of wales title in respect for Diana.
