Remember, If you do Mother Gothel you need to keep in mind that her clothing is supposed to look outdated to hint at her true age (Edit) Peter Pan takes place in 1909 because in Peter Pan 2 Wendys husband is seen returning from World War 2
One thing that is plausible is that Dr Facilier's design was heavily inspired by Baron Samedi, a sort of deity(?) associated with voodoo. His signature look is a tailcoat suit, top hat, cane, and skull themes (either a straight up skull head or skull patterned facepaint). His color scheme is also, you guessed it, black, white and purple.
Maybe a small fun fact: Disney allegedly was inspired by the statue of a woman in my hometown to create the face of the Evil Queen. The woman is called Uta von Naumburg. She, her husband and many others gave money to build a cathedral there. After the cathedral was finished, statues were built to honor this group of people. Uta's statue indeed has a cold look and, most famously, a high collar. Legend has it she was very unhappy in her marriage, therefore the artist wanted to portray her that way.
I'm gonna say that the reason Hook's shirt is pink is that he's bad at laundry and just threw in the white shirt with his red jacket and breeches. Always separate whites and reds children!
Fun fact from my art history professor, the evil queen from snow white is actually based on a statue in the Naumburg Cathedral depicting one of it's patrons, Uta von Ballenstedt. What's interesting about this is that the patrons were depicted in fashions that were modern to the time they were created, not really accurate to the time the patrons were alive, so the style we see on the statue is probably something she didn't actually wear in her lifetime.
Medieval Art Historian here: The Evil Queen was most likely partially based on the donor portrait of Uta von Ballenstadt (c. 1000-1046) of the Naumburg Cathedral from the 13th century, and they do in fact contain many similarities in style!
I think you're right! I wasn't paying too much attention because I know Hook is definitely not from the 1900s and the movie was released in 1953. But Return to Neverland (the sequel) takes place in 1940, which makes me think that Peter Pan is set in the 1910s (though if that's the case, Mrs. Darling could look a little more historically accurate ;D)
@@gremlita Yeah, I wish there was even more time and budget for these older hand-drawn films (or even for Princess and the Frog) cause then we could get more details in the clothing, especially for Dr. Faucilier's pin striped pants...those would have looked so good! Also I love your videos, I always look forward to the next one!
I just wanted to point out that dr. Facilier is a voodoo doctor, so I think the little feature like the tooth necklace should also be looked at for accuracy. Such as traditional voodoo or black Magic accessories in New Orleans. New Orleans has a large African descent population and many practiced black magic so it is important to take that into account.
Re Dr Facilier, I think the lack of dress shirt baring midrif is queer coding (which disney loves lmao), whereas the standard shirt with no waistcoat wouldn't have that same othering effect
not 100% sure if it's queer coding. He's dressed almost exactly the same as Baron Samedi in Sugar Hill, which is a classic blaxploitation movie. Seems more likely they'd draw inspiration from that character
Im not normally into this kind of stuff, but you're so knowledgeable about something Ive never even thought about. I watched the princess dresses videos and you're really cool.
Honestly I don't even really care about disney movies but these videos are so interesting! I think the part calling out disney anti-semitism was very important, kudos for that.
Could you do a video on the costumes in Death Becomes Her? The costumes in my opinion are so beautiful and also quite symbolic in the repetitive colour schemes (Madeline being in blues and white and Helen being in reds). Would love for you to look at the costumes!
I always have seen turn of the century cartoons as examples of antisemitic depictions, never have I been pointed at the obvious that Near Easter/Middle Eastern ethnic feature are still often chosen for villainous characters because ahhhh antisemitism. It’s so disappointing how society hasn’t evolved. People just went back to subliminal antisemitism
YES AGREED-being Jewish it is so frustrating that antisemitism is like never talked about??? Like it’s just a softened up offensive thing that is made fun of all the time so one really cares for and it’s like we don’t matter as much just cause we “blend in” but we are like the black people of religion if that makes any sense.
The awful part is that the these features are so established as villainous that people draw villains with these features not even realizing where it comes from and keep prepetuating them unconsciously
Hey I was wondering if you could do the outfits for the Barbie movies, specifically the historical based/fairytale ones (and excluding the fantasy and modern ones)? I loved this video so much and I can't wait for the rest of the series! As a Jewish lady, I also appreciate that you referenced the Jewish tropes in Disney villains! Lets also discuss how many villains are coded to be disabled and this is framed negatively.

Frollo was actually changed to a judge by victor Hugo for the stage adaptation, so this wasn't disneys decision, he's been a judge since almost the very beginning. Love your videos, since you're in Newyork you and bernadette banner should totally crossover
Loved this video, but Disney’s Peter Pan takes place in the Edwardian era, you can tell based on Mr. and Mrs. Darlings clothing, and even Mrs. Darlings hair is super accurate to Edwardian hair.
Sure, but that doesn’t mean Hook was from the Edwardian era too! Time moves differently in neverland and it sounds like he’d been there for a little bit.

Mina: talks about how Disney villains have a consistent red/purple/black color scheme Me, currently wearing red purple and black, my three favorite colors: 😳 (Honestly the villains always look cooler anyways tho)
I think one thing that could’ve improved your critique of Facilier would be to look at the historical dress of Vodun practitioners. Just to round it off.
yeah, even those portrayed in media. I watched Sugar Hill a year ago and immediately noticed that Baron Samedi in that movie is dressed almost exactly the same as Dr. Facilier
I love Frollo's song about wanting Esmeralda to be 'his and his alone'. It does such a great job at showing his hypocrisy, it shows us how he believes he has the moral high ground ('you know I'm so much purer than...'), but he is actually a dirtbag. It also makes him very much like real life 'villains' that hide behind religion. And I think it's the only scene in a Disney movie in which this form of sexism/misogyny is shown (including victim blaming: 'I'm not to blame, it is the gypsy girl') and properly depicted as evil.
Perfectly said. I love how they subtly but also explicitly, in a sense, show the hypocrisy of 'religious' leaders. They may look "godly" but the way they live says something else.
Doing my lit degree, we just did Peter Pan and apparently the novel highly described Captain Hooks' clothing as resembling of Charles the 2nd as he's supposed to symbolise power and education the upper classes enjoyed (apparently Captain Hooks was an Eton boy!) Perhaps this could have influence on his costume in the film too !!✨✨
Fun fact: the reason we don’t have images of Mycenaean hades is because he likely didn’t exist at this time at all. Poseidon was largely considered to be associated with the underworld due to his earthquakes
Disney should make more princesses wearing black, red, brown, navy blue since all princesses are wearing bright saturated gowns and leave the darker colors for the villains it would be interesting and refreshing to see how the color of your wardrobe doesn't necessarily reflect your personality as for a princess can wear black and still be joyful and happy
You talking abt Minoans and the Mycenaean civilization is insane to me I’m literally from the area they existed in and my house is 5 minutes from the ruins of Knossos 🤣
i really like the idea of hook adopting different items of clothing every time he leaves neverland or every time someone comes to neverland and brings different clothes... tbh i wish i had half of that mans dress sense lmao
I was looking to sew if someone said this! He's believed to be an offshoot of mycanean Poseidon. One evidence of this is the story of hades and persephone, where it was Poseidon and Persephone in Mycenean tales
a cool headcanon/in-universe explanation for Hook's costuming is that Peter Pan and The Lost Boys STOLE all of Hook's bling and, in paranoia, he took to wearing his fanciest regalia on a daily basis to prevent THEM being stolen too. The lilac shirt, similarly, could be passed off as a prank played on him, Peter staining the pirates' laundry with beetroot or mollusks, or simply an unfortunate relic of the pirates first attempts at laundering in Neverland (as opposed to hiring washerwomen at port). For The Evil Queen, her design reminds me of Mother Gothel: deliberate historic inaccuracy to evoke a sense of witches being much older than they appear. Prior to her being widowed, the Evil Queen likely conformed with contemporary fashions but discarded them during her coup.
"The people performing these amputations were cooks, not surgeons" Let's be honest, even if they'd had proper surgeons on board, they wouldn't have stood that better of a chance at surviving.
For the Evil queen the dress is fitted to her body and the largest cape because vain of course. Most of the disney fashion are inspired by the when the movie came and not of the time in the actual movie
thank you so much for pointing out the antisemitism in popular media such as disney film depictions, its very important that it’s acknowledged and denormalized.
Family guy pokes fun of that fact. That’s actually how I trust realized this. In an episode they go Disney style and everyone is singing and happy. Then one of their Jewish characters appears and they all get angry and point him out and kill him. That clicked in me and I was like “wait? Does Disney “not like Jewish people” and then I saw the similarities in their villains
Okay but if there ever was a pirate who would wear highly impractical clothing, it *would* be Captain Hook... and he sure looks fabulous even without an array of jewels
Between slashing, epaulets, trench coats, and camo, there's so many trends that came from militaries over the years. I think this could be a great subject for a video! Also examining the idea of romanticizing warfare by making aspects of the uniform trendy.
“Hellfire” is and will forever be the most evil and most epic Disney villain song. It’s the perfect villain song with the perfect Disney villain. It’s real and honest in portraying true human evil, and our capacity for evil and good. This is a concept that children should be privy to, and it is excellent that Disney went there with Frollo.
Actually, fun fact, as of now we haven't found any mention of Hades in Linear B. He could have existed my Mycenaean Greece, but he also could have just not. ig they thought him being a priest was too spicy so they left him as a judge (even though the rest of the movie is traumatizing 😂😂)
or maybe judge made it so modern ppl would see him as more of an authority figure than a priest idk
@@charlottecomeau1266 ya and i think in lindsey's vid she says tht the Disney movie is more of a remake of a very popular movie version of huntchback, since a lot of the stuff tht was cut out/changed from the movie was also cut out/changed in the Disney version
and it kinda does make sense i mean in our modern western cultural a judge/person in government has more power than someone in the church

Thank you for adding this! I was surprised she didn't discuss it since it seems to have been the major inspiration for Facilier's look.

Damn. That is a cool fact. I looked it up and you definitely see the resemblance.
Uta's statue is really pretty
It says that she was considered the most beautiful woman of the Middle Ages and I can see why.
Disney Villains get some of the most fun outfits!
They get some of the best songs too
As a Jewish person, thank you so freaking much for including that tik tok and bringing awareness to the antisemitism engrained in our modern society!!
I'm gonna say that the reason Hook's shirt is pink is that he's bad at laundry and just threw in the white shirt with his red jacket and breeches. Always separate whites and reds children!
OR it could be pink because the "gay men wear pink" thing. probably something like that
its not entirely necessary nowadays, now laundry detergents dont cause colors to bleed (at least after the first few washes!)
Oh, come now. You know Smee was the one doing the laundry...and he'd probably had a few swigs of rum before hand...

I love that plant has a sticker that just says "PLANT" same
Medieval Art Historian here: The Evil Queen was most likely partially based on the donor portrait of Uta von Ballenstadt (c. 1000-1046) of the Naumburg Cathedral from the 13th century, and they do in fact contain many similarities in style!
Doesn't Peter Pan take place in the late Victorian/early Edwardian? Judging by what Mr. and Mrs. Darling wear
Since people don’t age in neverland, Hook is likely from the golden age of piracy and not from the movie’s modern time

Could you do a video on the costumes in Death Becomes Her? The costumes in my opinion are so beautiful and also quite symbolic in the repetitive colour schemes (Madeline being in blues and white and Helen being in reds). Would love for you to look at the costumes!

THANK YOU for mentioning the antisemitism! i feel like no one ever talks about it; it means so much to me that you made a point to mention it
agreed!
Of course that's not the only awful part but I hope you get my point
Facelier would look so cool if he was super colourful, fits his chaotic personality and would give him a very unique look
Hey I was wondering if you could do the outfits for the Barbie movies, specifically the historical based/fairytale ones (and excluding the fantasy and modern ones)? A couple of them are a bit vague in time period like Diamond Castle, Island Princess, or Magic of Pegasus but it would totally be amazing!
Island Princess is set in Italy and Pegasus is set in the Netherlands. That's all I can really say.
@@finland4ever55 How can Pegasus be placed in the Netherlands? Their castle is literally built in a canyon-like thing and they are on a mountain passage when they find the cave. There are no mountains like that in the Netherlands. I'm not trying to attack you, but this doesn't make any sense geographically :)
I loved this video so much and I can't wait for the rest of the series!

Facilier
The way that she included an explanation about anti-Semitism in the video is honestly a serve and we should talk about it
Captain Hook's costume actually makes sense historically, because captains were not doing what the regular crew members would do
I love Frollo's song about wanting Esmeralda to be 'his and his alone'. It does such a great job at showing his hypocrisy, it shows us how he believes he has the moral high ground ('you know I'm so much purer than...'), but he is actually a dirtbag. It also makes him very much like real life 'villains' that hide behind religion. And I think it's the only scene in a Disney movie in which this form of sexism/misogyny is shown (including victim blaming: 'I'm not to blame, it is the gypsy girl') and properly depicted as evil.
hopefully they do one about muslim men too
Perfectly said.
"Hellfire" is an amazing song though.
We are still waiting for part 2.
Finally someone is talking about the villains' outfits. Can you please do a series on the historical accuracy of the outfits of the Disney Princes?
Disney should make more princesses wearing black, red, brown, navy blue since all princesses are wearing bright saturated gowns and leave the darker colors for the villains it would be interesting and refreshing to see how the color of your wardrobe doesn't necessarily reflect your personality as for a princess can wear black and still be joyful and happy

i really like the idea of hook adopting different items of clothing every time he leaves neverland or every time someone comes to neverland and brings different clothes... tbh i wish i had half of that mans dress sense lmao
Fun fact, Hades didn't exist in Mycenaean Greece. Probably one of the reasons that there are no depictions of him.

"The people performing these amputations were cooks, not surgeons"
Let's be honest, even if they'd had proper surgeons on board, they wouldn't have stood that better of a chance at surviving.
10:50 Thanks for that I'm really tired from people that dont recognize the greek on Hercules
For the Evil queen the dress is fitted to her body and the largest cape because vain of course. Most of the disney fashion are inspired by the when the movie came and not of the time in the actual movie
