Maybe the screen shake was supposed to trigger after the missiles hit the platforms? I doubt they were going to have a shake that intense throughout the entire act.
I always thought the camera's movement in that section felt a bit odd since they usually don't do things as linear as it ended up feeling. The screen shake sure does add onto the whole action feel. Also darn, Knuckles left too early for Sonic to point at him after he got zapped :(

Wanna know something interesting? The thing shooting missiles at you will only make a laser type noise if you have on an electric shield. Maybe it's all 3, I just know when I had an electric I was like wait wtf, I've never heard it make this noise. All I know is he won't make that sound if you don't have a shield.
Well, no, post Sonic 3C 0408 all this code got gutted. You might be able to cause screen shake effects in Act 1, Act 2, and even Hidden Palace but that's because they've all been programmed to account for certain events and cutscenes that trigger it.

I agree, and curse the shorter and less animated 0408 HPZ cutscene for that one.

Honestly it makes the shimmer effect so hard to see I get the point but it feels unnecessary definitely cinematic
actually sometimes the game bugs up and starts shaking anyway in lava reef so maybe it wasnt unused

That screen shake would make too dramatic for an escape sequence for Act 3, so maybe that's why it went unused.
