a.k.a. Subtitles showing up multiple times after hardcoding in VLC fix.
If you're watching this you've probably tried burning subtitles to your video and encountered multiple errors - either subtitles not showing or displaying multiple times.
I've tried just about everything to come up with this solution. Check it out :)

On the current VLC version, you don't have to do that last step where you delete part of the string, the new version has optimized this and it works wonders!! Thanks so much for such a clarifying video!

I'm sure it works well enough for short videos, but from my experience with this method, while it does add the subtitles, it desyncs the audio to an insane degree. The desync starts off as bearable, then gets progressively worse. By the end of a two hour video the audio for a gunshot, for example, comes multiple seconds before the trigger is ever pulled.
Edit: Selecting to keep the original audio while editing the profile the doesn't fix the problem, but it does make it slightly better.
Streaming it at all seems to be what desyncs the audio. In other words, it is the process itself that keeps causing problems.
After further reading I have discovered that this problem may only apply to mp4 files.

What an incredibly convoluted and inconvenient way to hardcode subtitles! It's like filming your screen to get a clip from a longer video. Or printing out some text and a picture, cutting and pasting them together and scanning it back in order to put graphics in your document. (Ok, maybe not _that_ bad, but it's similar)
If you have to burn in subtitles for a video of an hour, are you just going to wait 60 minutes for the "recording" to finish? What if for whatever reason the video stutters for a moment and that is captured too?
There's easy to use, *free*, dedicated software for this, you know? Just download Handbrake or VidCoder (basically Handbrake in an even more user friendly shell). In the latter all you need to do is:
    1. Select your video file
    2. Select your .srt subtitle file
    3. Press the encode button
    4. Done
It's easier, _significantly_ faster and more reliable and just... the proper way to do this.

    *UPDATE*
VLC has made is easy now by going to the Media tab and selecting Covert. The process is similar where you browse and select the video file but now you get to add the subtitle file right away by selecting the *_Use a subtitle file_* checkbox. Next, select the *_Convert/Save_* button, and under Settings section of that window, click the edit tab with the tools icon > go to the Subtitles tab and check the *_Subtitle_* checkbox and the *_Overlay subtitles on the video_* checkbox. You're done! Let it convert, then reopen the video from your file destination.

At first It didnt work just following the steps of the video.
The changes I did was that:
-At 1:32 I did add the subtitle file
-At 2:37 Not only have I deleted that "scodec=t140" line, but I have also ADDED everything else before that line, from "vcodec=h264...." to "...samplerate=44100"
And after doing that, it took more time to create the new video, but it finally worked.
    Hope this helps someone else!

I have to do Track Synchronization to hasten the subtitles by about 1-second to get it up to speed with the audio and video. How can I hardcode the subtitles after a Sync adjustment?

People!! It's actually working. Please take this idea. When you are having the video and subtitle (.srt file) separately (i.e., you need to enable it manually in VLC) you need to merge those two in 'mkvifo GUI' software first to .mkv or .mp4 format. Then taking that out the video, you can stream the subtitles over the video permanently using this method. Hope this helps you :)

I'm late, but leaving this here for future reference:
To have the subtitles automatically show up, you have to have both the video file and the subtitle file in the same folder AND WITH THE SAME NAME. Notice how in this video there's "pushup.mp4" and "pushup.srt", that's the trick.

Hi can you tell me which version of vlc are you using ? I don't have "stream" on the latest version, there is one thing that looks like it but then I don't have the part where you are supposed to delete the "codecT40 "

What version of VLC are you using? I'm on a mac using 2.2.1. I make a lot of videos for a deaf audience and could really benefit from this. On the mac version when I click Stream, as you have suggested, I get a completely different set of options. It actually thinks I want to stream to a web address.
Good video by the way. If I can get this working on a mac you'll rock!

I can’t believe people are actually using the least intuitive method to burn in the subtitles. It is not hard coded, you just burn that into the video stream.
Use HandBrake, import file, choose the resolution and select “same as source” on frame rate. Then move to the subtitle tab and import your set, check “burn in” and specify the output file and and start encode.

great it works! Never had any problems except for some synchro, but that's another story.

When everything is completed you should click on play in order to convert the video .. that's what happened to me when I followed your instructions.. Thanks

Hi, in your video, i assume that the subtitle file should be in the same folder and VLC automatically detects it? If not, at which point do i define the subtitle file?

I'm on a mac and have downloaded the VLC media player, but there are no buttons on the top of the screen. Where your screen shows "Media" -> "Playback" -> "Audio" -> "Video" -> "Subtitles" etc. my screen shows nothing. Any idea why that might be?
I've been trying to figure this out for an hour now and every single online resource is telling to just click the Subtitle button on the top of my VLC screen. You can imagine how frustrating it is to not have that option. I have no idea why it's not there.

OK, so this is how it worked for me :
    - at 1:30, I did tick the "Use a subtitle file" then browsed for my .srt file
    - at 2:21, I opened the "Audio codec" then ticked " "Keep original audio track"
    - then in "Subtitles", I ticked "Subtitles" and "Overlay" (codec being on DVB)
    - at 2:40, I didn't change or remove any text
    - when the file was created, it didn't play, so I had the idea to add the name of the format (.mp4 in that case)
    - and hallelujah it worked !
    - the weird thing is that I then removed the name of the format, and it is still working...
Anyway, thanx to all, it's a group effort !

Sorry for the delay ! At 2:40, I did not delete any text ("scodec=t140") as suggested by the uploader, and I clicked right away on "Stream"... Good luck !
