Today we distill nitroethane from solvent cement. That's it nothing special. Not trying to make a long description for no apparent reason.

Going forward, if I was to do this again, I would do a slower heating distillation. Likely better separation!

You said this will dissolve superglue? You mean when it's dry, or just thin out the anhydrous liquid? Either way, would it be skin safe? I know solvents tend to not be flesh friendly, but I swear I get half the container on myself when I use gel and ⅘ on my hands and shirt if it's liquid. I've ruined many cool shirts with what starts out looking like spooge only stiffer and ends up cracking apart and making a big ol hole.
Could excess anhydrous calcium chloride be used to remove the butanol, as it is known to form complexes with simple alcohols?

@@chemdelic the problem with the water is that both nitoethane and butanol are similarly soluble so you'll get a very little gain in purity over a considerable loss of product.

You could take the nitroethane that you collected (likely a mixture of it and butan-1-ol) and perform a simple oxidation, which won’t touch the nitroethane. Any butan-1-ol (117.7 °C) present will convert to butanal (74.8 °C) which has a much lower boiling point. That should make the distillate from the next distillation be squeaky clean.

In the comments we speculated that although he has a degree and a university affiliation, sometimes your name just falls out of the hat. The nitroethane can form a nitronate salt. That might be one way to separate it from the alcohol. Not to mention you could get rid of most of the 1-butanol with a water wash. Nitroethane is only slightly soluble in water. But, I would be interested to see an alcoholic solution of sodium hydroxide added to the mixture. It's alcohols and ester, so you should get a precipitate.

I'm guessing the "crazy lines" are most likely due to a large change in refractive index in this particular mixture as the temperature increases. Convection currents rising up through the liquid bring areas of hot an cold into close proximity and light is refracted in random directions creating areas of bright and dark which present to the eyes as wiggly lines.

I'm all set to run 100liters of sugar wash through two pot stills today, once I wake up a bit. First a stripping run through a 30 liter with an alembic condenser setup and then a second distillation through an older one with a reflux condenser for the spirit run, this is an excellent way to get me focused my man, appreciate you bro!

You can have all the listed precursors you want, but if they can’t prove that you’ve made anything illegal or intend to (intent is really hard to prove) nothing is going to happen. At least in the United States.

I’ve done this with extru- fix
Nitroethane 30-60% dcm 30%~60% I methoxy 2 propanol 1-10% I washed the methoxy out with water then distilled off the dcm leaving me about 200mls of nitro that I fractioned off leaving a yellow goey stuff the last few mls this is from 500ml bottles everything comes off at around there boiling point . There was a fraction that came off at around 60c I think it was azeotropic boiling point between dcm and nitroethane that I think exists.excellent work people have talked about this for ages but your the first to post a video…….. nitroethane was good to go worked perfectly for removing glue!
But to change the subject, but I've found that methanol works great for removing glue as well. As does acetone. Is there a certain glue that Nitroethane works best on? Just wondering as I knew that you *could* use it for glue, but I had never actually met anyone who actually did use it for that due to how hard it can be to get and due to its price/value. Would you say that it works better than methanol or acetone? Is there a certain glue that it works miracles on? Just wondering. I attempt to remove a lot of glue from bottles and stuff like that, so I'm always on the lookout for betters ways of going about it. Right now, I just use methanol and paper towels. Seems to work great, but I guess it could be better if it dissolved the glue totally.

Can you do a qualitative test of the reagent and report back? Light it on fire in low light and see the color of the flame--I've heard that it should be a nice white flame.
Fractional crystallization would work on this mixture...
Phenoxyethanol mp is around -5, nitroethanol is around -53 and the rest is around -80, -83.6 and -89.8.
Get some dry ice and drop the dry ice into the mixture until you get a "wax". The wax will mostly be nitroethanol with some amount of phenoxyethanol, and maybe trapped formate/acetate.
dry ice is only around -78, so the other stuff shouldn't freeze too readily.
Do that to up the percentage of nitroethanol, and then run a traditional hot distillation and you'll get relatively pure nitroethanol without too much of a problem.

No. Lol. Butan-1-ol melts at -89.8°C, nitroethane at -89.4°C, so no fractional freezing.

It’s great for Claisen-type formylations and could also potentially be incorporated into a heterocycle like imidazole or thiazole. Or, you could hydrolyze it to formic acid and use that as an acid catalyst for something!

I'm not that experienced in frac distillation, but that seems fast. The seps I did had a larger b.p. difference, and we got figuratively decapitated if we exceeded 1 drop per 1-2 seconds. Apparently Vigreux columns are very slow at gas exchange, so higher rate equals lower separation and a much angery professor.
But again, I only did 1 semester of university chem, and I was BAD at it.
Yeah, it does seem like he was running the column quite fast. For the best separation, you want to run the distillation at about 1 drop per second. Ideally, it should be run at about one drop every 10 seconds but ain’t nobody got time for that

@@chemdelic You should totally creep up on the temperature. If you bring the system up top temperature over a couple of hours to the point where you're getting total reflux, you can then bump it up a little bit until you start getting product in the receiving vessel.
At the rate you distilled in this video with that simple vigreaux column you were getting less than ideal fractionation.
A packed column would do a much better job. Might be good for a follow-up video.

I think your thermometer bulb is again wrong placed. Distillation also need boiling chips or stirring to avoid bumping or froating.

It is a joke surrounding nitroethane. Nitroethane is on the DEA list one chemical list , but it isn't illegal. People just assume you will use it to make amphetamine or MDMA. Its actually really useful for a lot of things!
Knoevenagel condensation of a substituted benzaldehyde with nitroethane gives a phenyl-2-nitropropene which can be further reduced to an amphetamine which might be, in certain instances, a controlled substance.
