100% agree with Joe - I use the "better to fall off a harder climb than an easy one" every time I'm having a shit session 😂 and just try insane projects that can't hurt my ego
Y'all can fool around and laugh at each other all you want, but Tom's constant encouragement and Jon saying "I got you" after every move Joe made show how much you care about each other and it's really special and honestly that makes this channel even more fun to watch. :')
Joe: "I just feel the eyes burning in the back of my head, and it's making me feel sick." Tom: "It's alright, it's uh... they're burning on the front of your head as well!" So reassuring!
Jesus Christ Jonny P is a beast ! He's great at bouldering and he can send hard lead routes ! Massive congrats to Joe for sending that 7B, he looked so in control on it ! What a great video !
Falling practice for Joe definitely!! And not taking big whippers.. just clip and fall on every bolt. And then clip move and fall, etc. I'm still working on it and it isn't easy
@@Cookie-tv2bb I find that once I've done a couple of clip drop climbs I'm a lot better. I'm still trying to get to the point where you drop before clipping (higher up obviously)
Also as an aside, I suspect half the reason that youtube mostly has bouldering channels is because it's probably easier to film. You guys did a great job and got great angles on the shots.
Tons of respect, can't believe you did such difficult lead routes. Would love to see more every once in a while. But what would be really awesome is another moonboard "Muppets" comp amongst the crew!! Absolutely loved the last one, and even though moonboard masters 2019 was a bit, uh, different (trying to use nice words) your last moonboard comp was super amazing!
Actually what I like about a lot of climbing videos is to see people struggle only because they're pushing their limits. It's most rewarding to watch them overcome the climb they were battling. Great work, and really liked seeing sport climbing seeing as I mainly sport climb. Keep up the good work.
Awesome respect for Joe on this than almost any of the other videos honestly. Lead IS scary and it’s something I definitely find hard. What I would say though Joe is that your clipping is f’ing superb man! It’s so quick and clean and I know part of that will be down to wanting to get it clipped ASAP to feel (relatively) safe again but even so, top notch buddy 🤜👍
I have been bouldering for the past three years and just recently really started top roping and lead climbing. I’m afraid of heights but the more you do it the better it gets. Finishing a lead or top rope gives you a much different feeling of joy than bouldering does. This video was great!
Argem Sabuga As someone who’s having the same problems, the best piece of advice I can give is to find a belayer you ABSOLUTELY trust and only ever do lead with them. I’m still only managing 5c+ at best but I can barely manage a 5a if I’m being belayed by someone I have even the slightest doubts about
Yeah!!! Way to go guys! Going straight from bouldering to sending 7B is incredibly impressive. Great job Joe! Jon, you made that look too easy... Also great job!
Joe, that was like watching myself leading in a mirror! I am happy to highball most big boulders no problem as I'm sure you are but put a rope and harness on me and all my strength counts for nothing as I over grip and crap my pants 2 inches above the last bolt! The moment you quit on the 7C+ and basically sat straight back into your harness with no drop reminds me of countless moments like that I have myself had on lead. The single cure for it in my experience is just being on the sharp end more. The comfort comes with heaps of time spent in that position and I think the most useful thing to help me get any closer to "fine" while in that situation was being super cautious of not over gripping. I've heard a couple good mates suggest both "the rock warriors way" and "fear" they are both supposed to be ace for helping you get your head around that stuff if you want to that is! We all know Bouldering is best ;) Good luck with it mate, I'd love to hook up for a climb with you guys back in the UK on one of my holidays or if you lot want to put up some new first ascents come down under, I can host you in Brisbane and we can go check out the granite belt region. First ascents and ace technical established routes abound! Keep up the hard graft bobat's been ace watching you all progress both climbing and video editing wise! P.S time for another hot sauce challenge? or maybe like I once did down a mountain snowboarding try climbing some stuff with Tiger balm smeared on your face just under your eyes (It's bare jokes honest....)
As much as I do enjoy watching Joe rage, I was also rooting for him to send on lead. I find that if I don't climb regularly, that fear of heights comes back and takes a few goes to get used to the height again.
You guys are awesome! Joe, you should do some practice falls to build up confidence, shake out your arms during the climb, find good rests to shake out and chalk up, and try to clip with the quickdraw between shoulder and waist height if possible, you'll save a lot of strength. And you'll be flashing those 7C+'s in no time
guys, you should be shaking your arms while holding the good holds... it helps the pump A LOT! I'm also struggling with fear of falling while lead climbing at the rock, working on a 7c project here in Brazil!
finally! great shots, I love it when ppl use multiple cameras along lead routes. Also, I prefer tryhard joe over raging joe :D (though sometimes that's the same...)
Respect for that Joe. I've been climbing for a few years and also still shit myself on lead. Best thing to do is just rip off the bandaid by taking a few lobs off an overhanging jug ladder, once you've taken a few falls everything feels much more relaxed.
Crazy to see guys that climb at this level look so uncomfortable on lead. If you guys really wanna get over your fear you should make a video of you guys taking massive whips repeatedly... I'd watch lol
I'm a noob so I may be wrong, but is it bad practice to clip as high as they are? eg, 6:41. I think because it means you've added twice as much slack as you would have if you'd climbed until you were about level with the carabiner
thenayancat Definitely especially when on the first 3 clips. After that it’s not so bad just because of the overall distance but yeah, if he’d have suddenly slipped while clipping, he’d have decked out for sure 😣
You actually fall the same amount regardless of if you clip at your waist or overhead. You end up further down the wall if you clip at your full reach though
Tim Parkin that’s actually not true. We tested this recently by having someone climb both on lead and a toprope. He clipped the 2nd draw and then went to clip the 3rd draw as early as he could but before actually clipping I took him on he toprope and he lead belayer held the exactly where it was before having taken any of he slack out as though he’d fallen. I then lowered the climber and turned out that even being lowered slowly so no rope stretch, his feet touched the ground. We then did the same thing but he him go for the clip with the draw at around chest height. When we lowered him down his feet were at leat 3 to 4 feet away from the floor
I'm not so sure. As you're covered by the last clip anyway you have backup. I think the double is meant for if you're top roping. The double clip makes sense on a sport climb as well as you might be cleaning on the way down
A lot of gyms will have to help teach climbers about sport climbing and how to properly set up a top rope and such. My gym actually requires us to clip both and to check if they are opposite and opposed before lowering! Just a way to constantly practice skills. You are protected by the gear below you so it isn’t such a big deal if the gear were to fail, inside or out!
The actual best way to get over your fear of lead is to take some falls. Not intentional falls, those are terrifying. Unintentional, unanticipated falls where suddenly you're just hanging and everything is actually completely fine.
Bouldering Bobat agreed it’s safer in general but when done badly or wrong, the risk potential is massively increased simply due to the height difference.
I can't find the artist for the song that started playing when Jon was climbing the first route. Anyone know it? I can't find it on the spotify either 😂
Tom, your're ascending using a great system, except you're missing a vital piece. Clip a biner in the bottom of your jug (jumar) and run the brake rope from your grigri through it. That way when you;re stepping up in your etrier you're pulling down on the rope. Much easier and effective.
@@tobydrake9141 he actually quit for a couple years (i think during a breakup but dont quote me on that) there is a vid doc on epic tv about his return to climbing
