Macron has decided that he did not _want_ to lose the election, so _he simply hasn't._ The left is understandably not okay with this, as it effectively annuls their huge win, and the right has simply smelled blood in the water. Macron, at the very center of the metaphoric horseshoe, is insisting on clinging to power without a democratic mandate to do so.

If by government, you mean the entire legislative branch or the entire state apparatus, you are correct. But if you mean the governing part of the legislative branch, then the video title is correct. In that case the mandate to govern has indeed collapsed.
I get that adverts are there to support the channel and the work that goes into creating these vids, though a 2 min ad in an 8.5 min video does seem exorbitantly long, that is essentially 23% of the entire video. At least it's at the end of the vid with a chapter marker.
Of course, he will have a higher approval rating. He is in the Honeymoon phase, and Macron has already been president for some years. When you are in office for that many years you are bound to be unpopular so his AR being 22% While Barnier being at 40%, in the beginning, is usually seen when a person first takes office. They will usually have a higher AR on average So this is very disappointing to see
3:26 "both ran on platforms the would have increased debt even further" bullshit, the left alliance NFP made a counter-budget proposal which increased state revenues by 75 billion while sparing the poorest, protecting social security and public services and favoring small and medium-sized businesses in contrary to Barnier's austerity plan validated by the RN which would have concentrated the effort on the lower and middle class and small business, which is why he got toppled. The real contradiction between the Barnier's budget and the NFP's was regarding the location of the large tax grabs. the left defended taxes on mega corporations, finance and the top 1%, and the right defended a budget which would take a toll on retirees, workers, students, immigrants, public servants and which would have broken the public sector. The later would also reveal itself to be unbalanced and unadequate in the end.
They'd literally go against the will of the French of having a left wing government. The French elite are just bad at respecting the will of the people.
Small technicality at 2:25. Your caption shows that Barnier has been a member of The Republicans since 2015. While that's technically correct, that's a bit misleading, as it it makes it seem like he decided to join that party in 2015 and was a political newby at that point. But one could hardly be further from the truth. The thing is that in France, parties (especially right-wing parties) sort of get "rebranded" every so often, but that does not mean that they are _really_ a different party. Les Républicains (2015-present) is essentially a rebranding of UMP (2002-2015), which in turn was a rebranding of RPR (1976-2002), which in turn was a rebranding of UDR (1967-1976), which was a rebranding of UNR (1958-1967), which was a rebranding of RPF (1942-1955). Barnier was a member of all of those parties from UDR onwards, apparently since he was a teenager (he was born in 1951), so probably since the late 1960s or so. So a better caption would read something like "Political party: The Republicans _and predecessor parties_ " - since the 1960s."

So there's a ridiculous deficit crisis and the moment a government tries to do something it, it gets scuppered. Greece did that for several decades, anybody recall how that worked out?
The "deficit crisis" was caused by Macron and his party in the first place. It's typical neolib stuff. Cut taxes on the wealthy minority, decreasing government revenue, then point to social programs that help the majority as the culprit.
Also deficit is actually used as an authority argument to force austerity policies on the people, basically taking money from their pockets while making gifts to corporations. The French understand that very well. Also some of them remember that it was a political choice they didn’t get to make to finance the country with pvt financial institutions and that the whole deficit issue is a direct consequence of the euro. Europe will most likely pay up if France face any kind of trouble, because Europe without France doesn’t really make any sense
Great to see givewell sponsoring this video. They are an awesome organisation and everyone should use them to help those most in need. Just makes logical sense to research before donating and they do it all for you.
I wouldn't really qualify Barnier or LR as "centre-right" anymore, they've been moving steadily to a radical right stance, especially on societal issues (LGBT rights, religion, immigration, etc.), and a fraction of them even allied with the National Front for the snap elections behind Eric Ciotti, the former LR party president. Macron's movement has replaced LR as the right / centre-right party, but since the whole political spectrum in France is moving to the right, it can appear as a "centrist" party.
oh please, they are standard right I wouldnt call the RN extreme right tho, just souverainist or even souvereign left considering their economic stance Not everything should be labeled based on historic stances and/or societal issues, that would be a crude oversimplification of the different economic stances. Beside, Id say that LR is not moving to a radical right stance, more that the current perception-due to both medias and societal views/standards- is leaning on a more "open" view, hence making us look at LR as more right than they really are (and dont let me get started on the RN). The last real radical right we had was Zemmour, with an economic stance much more 'right' than the current RN stance of a socialist sovereign state there's nuances and shade to everything, and now I really find it hard to categorize any party beside calling macron party "right" is also quite a stretch considering they have thrown money at pretty much everything-widening the debt even further we have a strong leaning towards societal right, but clearly not economic in any shape or form
@@pulsarre8013Look up the definition of far-right or extreme-right in political science and you'll find that it has very little to do with economics. A party can perfectly be categorised as far-right while having a more typically left-wing stance on economics. Just look at how diverse the European far-right parties are! Zemmour is indeed very liberal/right-wing economically but that's not what puts him in the far-right category, it's everything else.

Macron was willing to work with the left but not the far left, kick them out of the coalition then something sensible can happen.
The funniest part about the censure ? Macron refused to nominate a PM from the left coalition (who came in first position in the elections) and preferred one from right wing LR (who came in 4th) to form a "consensus" government. Said consensus government, and their allies in parliament, proceeded to never try and compromise with the left ; instead they tried to ally with the fascist RN. And then, predictably, the fascists proceeded to stab them in the back. There's a lesson somewhere in there.
If Macron had allied with the rats from the left, you would have been ousted in one day. No place for the communists Non non, la France bouge elle voit rouge non non, assez de trahisons…
This was to me the most confusing part of the process and really muddled Macron's argument. So Macron calls a snap election wishing to see that the French public rejects the rise of the far right. Which it does, but ends up voting more for the Left. Which has its issues, not going to argue that even as someone from the left, but still is essentially the results Macron claimed to be seeking. Except at that moment Macron suddenly shifts course in arguing that the Left is actually a bigger problem politically than the far right this snap election was called to combat? It's not that I had a positive image of Macron before that sequence of events, but it made Macron's stance impossible to even process on an argumentative level as is the far right then a problem or not?
@@toniviskari417 It’s actually pretty simple, he wanted to maintain his own power if not as the majority party then at least as a king maker and did everything he could to do that, after winning though he calculated that it would be easier to work with the right then a bunch of literal communists, but unfortunately, both the right and the left don’t like him very much so instead of being a king maker he just gave them a common enemy.
LR is more moderate than le pens party so no he didnt choose a fascist, and it probably would have been better if the left was able to compromise with macron but instead the only cooperation they wanted with macron was for macron to step back in political matters and for his coalition to become junior partners to the left who wanted to apoint a left wing prime minister who ran exclusively in favor of the left and no compromise with the center. This lack of moderation in the left who want to make things happen just how they want with no compromise is why they lost. 6:32 Both article 16 (which would probably send us to a situation similar to South Korea and which Macron has pledged not to use) and a full shutdown are actually highly unlikely in the current situation. The most likely outcome is at the top left of the flowchart - parliament passes an emergency law that allows to collect taxes according to the previous year's budget until a new budget is voted. This is by no means an ideal situation (notably, tax brackets might not be reindexed to account for inflation until the new budget is passed, which means people might pay more taxes which would then have to be corrected by the new budget) but still much better than whatever crisis would ensue from article 16 or a full shutdown. A majority of they parliament has already announced they'd vote such an emergency law should the budget not be finalised before the end of the year (which will probably be the case).

People calling for Macron's resignation like it was a solution... No president can change the fact that the current parliament is split in 3 ideologically opposed groups. No amount of changing president can solve that.
The centrists need to accept that they are not popular enough to stand alone, and make changes to build a coalition
That will mean getting off the fence and picking a side

Tale as old as time, centrist party automatically assumes that one far party will just side with them against the other far party, only for both far parties to team up against the centrist.
Do they not know about horseshoe theory??
There's no far-left in France. Mélenchon's program is less radical than Mitterrand's program in 1981. There are not even talks of nationalizing anything.
And in the end, centrist parties always side with the far-right.
Give old as time examples.
@@arnold3768 This has nothing to do with horseshoe theory, as reality very rarely has.

You should've accepted the left's olive branch candidate, Macron, it was the best deal you were going to get. It wasn't a _good_ deal for him, forming a government was always going to be a headache, but that was his best shot.
It really was tbh.
Their olive branch candidate was the person responsible for Paris's deficit, not sure that's a great choice during a financial crisis
It's actually even better for the left that Macron didn't accept. That gives them enough fuel to show French people Macron failed alone AND with the help of the right. The only choice now is the left.
Like the branch offered to Philips Petain.
@@AnEagle He still needed the support of one of the wings, and he rejected the left's proposed candidate out of principle (he said he viewed France Unbowed having any influence on the government as totally unacceptable) and not because of specific issues with that candidate.
He needed to bite the bullet and work with either the NFP or the RN, and since there's traditionally been a cordon sanitaire against working with the RN and the NFP is a larger bloc, it made more sense for it to be the NFP than the RN. The NFP offered him a compromise candidate after a lot of frustrating negotiations. That was his best shot to form a government that might actually get things done and survive challenges. He didn't take it.

I get that adverts are there to support the channel and the work that goes into creating these vids, though a 2 min ad in an 8.5 min video does seem exorbitantly long, that is essentially 23% of the entire video. At least it's at the end of the vid with a chapter marker.
Doesn't really matter at all. In the Netherlands most governments don't make it till the end of the term. New elections and continue, nothing special.
Of course, he will have a higher approval rating. He is in the Honeymoon phase, and Macron has already been president for some years.
When you are in office for that many years you are bound to be unpopular so his AR being 22%
While Barnier being at 40%, in the beginning, is usually seen when a person first takes office. They will usually have a higher AR on average
So this is very disappointing to see
3:26 "both ran on platforms the would have increased debt even further" bullshit, the left alliance NFP made a counter-budget proposal which increased state revenues by 75 billion while sparing the poorest, protecting social security and public services and favoring small and medium-sized businesses in contrary to Barnier's austerity plan validated by the RN which would have concentrated the effort on the lower and middle class and small business, which is why he got toppled.
They'd literally crash the entire government into the ground rather than let Le Pen win the election 😬
Ver well explained. Thank you

Anything lefties don't agree with is far right. Trump is your daddy now. Prepare to actually spend on NATO agreement
oh please, they are standard right
I wouldnt call the RN extreme right tho, just souverainist or even souvereign left considering their economic stance
Not everything should be labeled based on historic stances and/or societal issues, that would be a crude oversimplification of the different economic stances.
Beside, Id say that LR is not moving to a radical right stance, more that the current perception-due to both medias and societal views/standards- is leaning on a more "open" view, hence making us look at LR as more right than they really are (and dont let me get started on the RN). The last real radical right we had was Zemmour, with an economic stance much more 'right' than the current RN stance of a socialist sovereign state
there's nuances and shade to everything, and now I really find it hard to categorize any party
beside calling macron party "right" is also quite a stretch considering they have thrown money at pretty much everything-widening the debt even further
we have a strong leaning towards societal right, but clearly not economic in any shape or form
I'm even surprised that someone would even think of calling LR centre-right. They have always been THE traditional right party.

Non non, la France bouge elle voit rouge non non, assez de trahisons…
@EthanQix "You lied to me"
"What do you expect? I'm ______"
@@toniviskari417
It’s actually pretty simple, he wanted to maintain his own power if not as the majority party then at least as a king maker and did everything he could to do that, after winning though he calculated that it would be easier to work with the right then a bunch of literal communists, but unfortunately, both the right and the left don’t like him very much so instead of being a king maker he just gave them a common enemy.
A left wing goverment would have been even more disastrous with uncooperation from a part of the center and all of the right not to mention that their policies would put france in so much debt its insane people dont see macrons point of no tax cuts like the right want and also no extreme policies and stupid retirement laws and other social policies the left wants.
