- We dug into the CNET archives to bring you this interview with Amazon's Jeff Bezos from 1997. Check out the amazing simplicity of the website and warehouse back then. Note that this footage is from a "field tape" that was used to produce the final video for CNET. It's edited only for length and is a bit rough, but that's exactly how we like it when you're viewing an e-commerce juggernaut in its embryonic stage.

I wonder what the dude with the dreads has been up to since then. Find him!
Haha yes!
I was wondering the same exact thing.
The 90's..
90's EMO dude . That's how they roll
He’s probably dead
I thought I was going to see a past and present video
Me too.
That Amazon warehouse was the same size as Jeff Bezos' present-day dog house.
***** lol that's true XD
The guy with the CD player pouch now that's a throwback lol
Noticed the internet speed was pretty good back then....page loaded fast as hell.
Because it was no filler text only
haha...true....ahhhh, I miss the sounds of dial-up....
There was not much content to load. Just plain text.
You must be really young to think about that 😂
Dig for some more 90s videos!!!
Interesting seeing how they started out.
Amazon sells books?
Nice progress
Netscape!!!!
Amazing how he has grown it to what it was in this video to what Amazon is now.. truly amazing! Its not much more than a small warehouse with probably less than $200k of inventory in here!
And remember to do your Jumping jacks and stretches. They sure improved. Better than any factory works that don't do stretch regime.
Oh the good ol netscape
They look like they enjoy their job, just look how happy their faces are :)
Netscape navigator!!! Oh web 1.0 how I miss thee some days...
Trent Reznor worked at Amazon in '97? Hmmmmm....
hes talking to ronald reagan!
Awsm👏👏👏
Rhastafarian dude working there 😂
What's crazy is that I actually ordered a book from Amazon in the 90s 😮
Those guys got beats by dr dre!! Wow awesome!!
I believe thing thing becomes a huge company 😬
Exactly 4 months from this date I was born :)

Netscape
mate mate mate
Lol I was 4 years old back then.
They were cheap on shipping dept back then. No taping machines, courier pickup looked amateurish in comparison to their advanced technology now.
18 years later and they still don't do international shipping...
They do international shipping.
Mountain Do Only for a small number of items. Most tech items are US only
Because Murica son you want everything catered to you? Then make it or stop crying.
Leowulf The Second well i figured out that if ebay manages to ship items from one side of the globe to the other, so can Amazon
Daniel Sharon also depends on if the 3rd party seller is willing to ship worldwide or not, most dont want the hassle
720p in 1997 mind blowned or they repolished the video lol
This was 2.5 years before I was born so I've had amazon all my life
And religiously use it like all tech heads.
Keep the camera straight smh
Started from the bottom...
if only we had software as light as that today, their probably using Pentium 2's or somthing and the're not paticularaly slow.
Wehiremonkeys how did you manage to spell "they're" wrong twice, both in different and unique ways
thoravian
Because real men don't need spellcheckers lol.
Wehiremonkeys yes..and now please cook the burgers of people who know how to spell.
thoravian I could but the result would be a little... dangerous.
Wehiremonkeys haha ok you made me laugh :)
lul I work in an amazon warehouse
How is it now.
DMorrea Belton hectic work I bet.
DMorrea Belton can you hook me up with a job there?? lmao, I love packaging. 😸😊
DMorrea Belton I do as well. Luckily I work at one that isn't in a larger area though.
Rabid Dingo came a real long way let me tell you lol there's so much stuff so many moving parts its crazy
Yet the seller fees are still horrible for the average joe that wants to see something.
Amazon is focused in the buyers, not the sellers.
And in 1997 Apple was almost dead.
