    Not just the dad puns, but the little quirks like when the PSA1 start slinging upwards and you look at it like "wait wat?", and then keep going. Super good editing to keep these little fun bits.

    Tom, great video as always. I'm loving your mic review videos (especially as we seem to have the same great taste in mics!) When we started our podcast 3 years ago we had no clue what we were doing, and, of course, we went for the cheapest equipment we could find, so the first "professional" (LOL) XLR mics we got were the Neewer 700s. They sounded great, and were a big step up from the BLUE Snowball we were using prior to that. Three years later, we've stepped up to the ROdecaster Pro and three ROde Podmics!!! But, I was still impressed with the way we sounded with the Neewer 700s back then. Now, after seeing your video, it sounds like they're still putting out a good sounding budget condenser mic! Keep up the great work and see you in the next video!!!

    The mic electret condenser is already charged so that it is easier to drive and doesn't need the full 48v of phantom power. The problem is the capsule's charge degrades over time so it needs more of the phantom power to compensate. Most people use this directly into their pc without audio interface and their audio card or cheap USB adapter cannot provide the 48v.

    When my podcast started recording TTRPG “actual plays” I bought 4 of these, with boom arms and pop filters on top of everting you got in the box, for ~ £20 each. I have since replaced them, but they did sterling service for a couple of years. Required very little gain from my mixer, had the gain knob around 9 o’clock. The issues that finally made me replace them were they were quite noisy, and everything required NR in post. And they were not great at rejecting environmental noise. But those were not big issues and could be dealt with in post. I still have a couple of them, for spares, and gave two to a RUclips TTRPG stream, where they are still doing great service.

    So this is super interesting. I just bought the NW-700 and NW-800 this week, and they're identical mics now, except for the housing (gold vs silver). They both are identical to the NW-700 in this video (the one with the black capsule). My sample size is 1 for each mic, so I wonder A) if this is a change across the board or B) if the change was made to utilize cheaper components to save on manufacturing or C) changed for the NW-800 as a result of criticism directed at that mic.
    TL;DR: They're virtually identical now, even if in the past they haven't been.

One of my writers bought a fifine mic a few years back and it sounded so tinny, would clip easily and was terrible with plosives. First sorry for my english, i have buy the nw800 and an interface audio (the cheapest one best quality i could with two xlr input, one output audio usb). I tell quickly my story. It's time in belgium where the t° is higher than usual. Windows should be open... And bad idea. Heureusement (hapelly), have a nice interface (xenyx q802 usb) and it save my life otherwise i hear street noise, car, and other stuff. I ending up to low the best i can the gain, level up the mic input usb in windows 10 ( so at max really), don't use the compressor of the xenyx, high the lvl main mix and that was good to end the stuff of the street... But i was lucky when i saw in a second stuff hand shop a mic, a capsule one ( sorry i don't know the good words in english) a phillips sbc md650. It seems to be in good stay for five € more expensive (i buy the nw-800 19€ in an good known american shop on-line). Why i'm telling this story? Guys, you should not buy a condenseur mic for podcast or streaming, twitch or other live stream - direct live, the sound is really more "naturel" but really capture all around you if your "studio place", your room streaming, is not ready for it. Also be very careful with the stand of the type of the mic, this shock mount is nice but transmitte all shock you made with the arme mount on it and vibration of the table where the arms is mounted also. To come back on the capsule mic (the phillips one), much easier way to begin with the sound, proximity mic, no transmit sound around you, yes of course the sound is more (how can i say?) in french word "étouffé" (muffled?) but i have obtain with the mixer a better sound than i hope in first time, more "clean" than the nw . I love the nw for his sound but... the phillips one is more easy to stream (capsule vs condenseur mic?). Have a nice day and my final words is: error is not bad, it funny to learn about it. THANK'S a lot for your stream. I learn a lot from "condensateur" mic with 48v power and capsul no 48 v power. Think's also, there's the second hand stuff ;-) .

    This is coming from someone who has had some great experience with several different Neewer Products over the years. This just wasn't one of them. In one of my videos, I threw the NW-700 up against their USB200 and an older discontinued NW-3U (which I really like), and it didn't even come close to competing. Electret Condenser microphones are not necessarily bad or low quality. They can be cheaper to make but they can also be really high quality, fantastic microphones. The Sennheiser 416 is an electret as are pretty much all shotgun mics. The AT Pro 37 also and they are great for stereo pair performance recording.

  • @DaivG

    Had a couple NW-700's recording through a RODECaster Pro and I was okay with the sound quality for the podcast I was recording. Definitely good enough to get started with. I would say it was worth the price because it was $40 for the mic, a cheap boom arm, phantom power supply and XLR cable on Amazon.
    I like the idea of reviewing not the cheapest, but probably the next step up, equipment to give people an idea of how to get started without wasting money on something that should be replaced as soon as possible.

      I agree. It's a great starter/budget option, but I would always recommend investing in the highest quality possible. The $100 price mark is where you can really start to find mics that not only sound good, but will last a lifetime.

      Hey Diana!
      Camera recommendations are always tough because there are so many variable. Generally speaking, the less expensive options just aren't worth it because whatever you save in dollars you'll pay for in frustration.
      My top recommendation would be the Sony ZV-E10, which can be purchased with a basic lens. It's more than enough to get you started and grow with you down the road. If that's beyond your budget, finding a way to use your phone while saving up for a good camera will probably yield the best results. 👍

    Hello Tom, Question please. What one inch condenser mic would you suggest for a boom pole for indoor on location video recording? I’m using the Rode NT2 through MixPre3 V2 to ATEM Mini Extreme audio input. I’m still learning about audio and you are extremely helpful for my learning journey. You mentioned Rode NT1 and Sennheiser MK 4 Large-Diaphragm Cardioid Condenser Microphone. I think I’m looking for top pointed direction instead of side correct? Thank you again for making these very informative videos, very inspired and happy. Walter

    • @tombuck
      @tombuck  3 года назад +1

      That's a good question, and I'll start off by saying that I'm probably not the best person to answer since I don't have a ton of experience with condensers. There are a few end-address condensers out there at different price points. The Rode M3 is a decent, affordable option.
      Typically though, a boom mic would be more directional in nature. I hope that makes sense.

    • @tombuck
      @tombuck  3 года назад +1

      Condenser mics like this need Phantom Power in order to work. IT's a small amount of power that's supplied directly through the XLR cable. Just about any mixer or interface can provide it.
      If you want a mic that can connect directly to your computer with nothing else needed, that's when a USB mic comes in handy.

    I just dropped 500 bucks getting the AC in car fixed. Meanwhile spent 135 bucks on the NW 700 and a Behringer mixer so I can yell at people while streaming FF14 on Twitch.
    I also work in radio and now how to get the best out of cheap mic with a mixer.
    I hate the Scarlet. For the cost, with no EQ, it's trash. Spend the money on a good mixer with phantom power and you'll get great results out of a cheap mic.

    • @imJMB
      @imJMB 3 года назад +2

      I personally couldn't disagree more regarding the Scarlett. I have a 6i6 that I've used for a multitude of things, including podcasting and videos, but primarily for recording music. If you want to alter the way something sounds in real time, then absolutely a mixer is what you want, but the Scarlett is a recording interface, not a mixer. It's job is to deliver clean un-altered signal to the PC for recording and to your ears for monitoring, and it excels at that. It's all about having the right tools for the job, and the Scarlett just isn't the right tool for your application, that's all :)

    • @tombuck

    Being on a budget I bought the Tonor BM-700 (which I belive to be an almost 1:1 rip-off of the Neewer; they're absolutely identical in everything, minus the branding on the mic body) a couple years ago and I have to say.... I haven't an audio interface, instead I use the phantom power that came bundled with the mic itself, and I find the mic to be overall lacking in the bass compartment. I often find myself in need to add a lot of bass in post production. But overall it's a pretty solid mic if you ask me
