Thanks Nat and Nick. Now here's a challenge. When you were in Dorset recently there was discussion about Gillingham, Dorset and Gillingham, Kent and a 'Point-to-Point.' If you haven't done it yet, it would be all too easy if it was train into a London terminus, cross London to another terminus, train out of London. So, how about going from Gillingham to Gillingham, it doesn't matter in which direction, without going 'inside' the M25?
This is a fantastic challenge. He should do this!
Agreed!!
Awwhh holding hands, what cute. Lovely lunch in Pickering then steam train to Aidensfield then tour round Hart beat country and back for tea. Ah the good old days. Thanks for the video guys.
Goathland was the setting for itv drama series Heartbeat in the 90s and 00s the station and the village further up the road was turned into the fictional village of aidensfield for the show. U mentioned Harry Potter that isn’t very popular with some of us 😂😂
Look on the bright side Nick. No special events means no screaming children.
I love going on heritage railways in between the event days during term time for this very reason. Noisy bratty kids ruin the peace and tranquility (I know I was a kid once but 🤷♂️ I'm just not a fan of anyone school age or younger because they're too noisy)
@@jacobmassey3897 Well, being a kid doesn't mean you were noisy. I blame the parents. I was always told by my mum to use my inside voice.
@@mattevans4377 very true. Sometimes I can't stand the parents even more than I can't stand the kids 🤣 I think you can often tell just by looking at them as to whether they're decent parents or not.
Parents are far more of a problem than children.
Absolutely amazing video. Was entertaining and fun from start to finish, despite not even having an interest in heritage railways! The dynamic between you two is just getting better and better as Nat is so much more confident and fun on camera ! You two are everything I miss from the Geoff + Vicki days!
I associate Goathland with Hearbeat, having grown up watching that on TV. I've been through on the train and on the 843 Coastliner bus but never got out to have a look around.
If you haven't done the Coastliner bus route, that's also a must-do while in the area.
I have distant memories of travelling from York to Pickering by train. So sad that the line was not preserved from Rillington Junction to Pickering so that journey would still be possible. Imagine steam hauled charters from York to Whitby!
Absolutely love the NYMR always make sure I'm at the gala in September and have many fond childhood memories of going between Grosmont and Pickering behind Sir Nigel Gresley when the engine called the line home
Fantastic video if in the area again I would recommend the Bus Route 840 that go along Moors from Pickering to Whitby you would get a different view point.
I’ve been on couple heritage railways including the North Norfolk Railway that goes from Sheringham to Holt. Those carriages do make you feel like you are going back in time of the steam era. Very nice 😊
You know you're old when you associate Goathland with Heartbeat
Even older, BBC's "All Creatures Great and Small"
Hey Nick! Fantastic video here! You should try and do the KWVR (Keighley Worth Valley Railway). This could be a great ride along the WV line. Nice and scenic and one of the most beautiful lines in Yorkshire.
It's a heritage line that I haven't been to but would love to go, also that Lambton Tank 0-6-2 is a brilliant locomotive and those accents were funny. Great video
Love the NYMR. ❤ In high season some of the trains to/ from Whitby on the mainline are steam, so at least some are allowed that far. I think it's just easier to switch the locos at Grosmon as that's where the engine works are.
Excellent video
The NYMR serves some very nice towns and villages (Pickering, Goathland, Grosmont and Whitby)
I’ve been to the NYMR plenty of times, it’s quite busy in the summer but more recently I went on a weekend in Autumn where it was more peaceful and the weather wasn’t too bad
Totally didn’t know about this video for ages 👀, It looks like you had a brilliant day out at my wonderful NYMR, I know I am completely biased but I just love it so much!!
A heritage line, that's a nice change from the norm! If you're ever down in Worcestershire/Shropshire, I'd definitely suggest having a gander round the Severn Valley!
Have done this line quite a bit. The last time, I was lucky to go on a train pulled by the Sir Nigel Gresley.
Please do the Romney, Hythe, and Dymchurch Railway next! 😁😍
I love the RHaD maybe the East Sussex and Kent and Bluebell aswell!
Nice one Nick (and credit to your young lady also). This journey has been on my 'to do' list for a long time, so I found it very interesting. It's quite a decent length of line now too with the extension to Whitby. Keep up the good work you're doing!
What a great video! Walking from Newtondale Halt to Levisham was a tad unexpected, but I’m sure you both enjoy it! I haven’t been to the NYMR for quite a while, but I’m sure I’ll be going at some point this year. Thanks for sharing. 👍🏻
To visit Newtondale Halt it would mean a long wait at a station with basically nothing there so we decided to go on a nice walk to do 2 stations instead
@@InkItOut That was a damn good idea! 👍🏻
Newtondale Halt is literally in the middle of nowhere, and I was very nearly left there once when a train I tried to flag down had to make an emergency stop!
It’s been some years since I last went on the NYMR. Grosmont was the end of the line as far as passengers were concerned back then. It would be worth going back to do the stretch to Whitby for the first time. And the rest of it again, obviously! There’s a lot of great heritage lines in the country, this is a series that could run and run.
Goathland of course also doubled as the village of Aidensfield in the hit ITV series about 1960's cops Heartbeat.
Yes, I was thinking the same as I've been on that line in he 1990s and Goathland was very popular the n because of that reason. I didn't know that station was alsoused in Harry Potter. Very nice place to visit if it is out of the high season.
Yeah, that definitely counts as visiting Whitby station, tick it off!
You got to do what I didn't have time for. However I did get 3 hours in Whitby when I visited on the 19th April.
You should have gone into the village at Goathland. The fictional village of Aidensfield from the TV series 'Heartbeat'
Thanks for letting us join the trip 👍
11:29 You missed something there, First track used to be the original turnaround point for the train. When whitby only had one platform.
RUclips paying well if you can afford the NYRM! Glad you enjoyed
Yeah what a rip off. People pay it, but everyone resents it. Sheds a poor light on the other fantastic heritage railways in the uk.
@@stephendewyeah like the one in Sheringham. Amazing line that in a little quirky town in norfolk
Currently the NYMR are offering a ticket where you can go back as many times as you like for the next 12 months for the price of £49.50 including all special events. This is a bargain compared to when I visited the railway for their Steam Gala a couple of years back. Then I paid over £80 for a couple of days at the gala which featured Tornado as the main attraction.
@@stephendew Having worked at a preserved railway and seen many of the costs that they need to find the money for the running and upkeep of the rolling stock and maintenance of the railway, they also have to employ some people with specific skills to do repairs, with the cost of living going up so much it's not easy, when we had the Covid pandemic they weren't allowed to run so funds were at a standstill! running a preserved railway isn't an easy job .
This is my home heritage line, you guys are keeping me alive with the train content while I'm in Korea fr
Really enjoyed this video lovely old stations and steam, you cant beat it . Thank you Nick and Nat
Lambton 29- 9f 92134 Black 5 5428 and a good old trusty class 25. That's a good day out for any rail enthusiast.
:D
Can you do a Playlist of going to Heritage Railways pls Nick?
Great video, Nick!
Definitely some nice stations down the North Yorkshire Moors Railway!
You should try doing to West Somerset Railway, that’s the longest. I’d try to do the WSR when there’s a gala or special event on when extra trains are running
We went to the north york railways a few years ago. Amazing heritage line.
BTW, we may take you up on the york trip from last week, looked brilliant.
0:43
Just wait until you visit the Severn Valley Railway, there's lots more than mk1s there
True, the only coaches we're missing out of the Grouping companies are some from the Southern.
If I remember correctly, the Nene Valley railway has rolling stock from Europe (the original Nene Valley was built to the European standard loading gauge), so that would be (or would have been) a LOT of variety!😅
The NYMR also has a rake of teak stock
Lovely mate i went on there a couple years ago and it was lovely ❤
I highly recommend going back to goathland and going round the village it is set out as it is in Heartbeat and you can go into the pub and all of the sets Heartbeat filmed that are now all gift shops and the pub is a lovely pub
That was a really good one! Thoroughly enjoyable. With Natt's guidance 12:40 you are getting the hang of this RUclips thingy.
Great to have a heritage railway tour. Beautiful countryside and well worth a visit. More please
Thanks for a great video and great to see Natt in a video again😀
I've been close to that station in goathland before (I NEVER knew it was on a heritage line)
We went on there couple years ago during the summer from Pickering to Whitby on return. Going through Yorkshire moors was stunning hope to go back on soon. Enjoy the trip!
Nick i recon they should use 46229 Duchess of hamilton on the heritage lines in it's streamlined beauty it would be nice.
1:52 Because Lner took over the railway as part of the big 4, after the NER merged
Nice! You should do this on the SVR next!
Really enjoyed this nick and natt!
What a pleasant looking ride
If you come to Kinver Nick with your mom and Dad you can do the Kinver railway. It’s a little different but may make a good video.
Brilliant video Nick, I've not been to the North Yorkshire Moors railway, it's a line I'd love to visit sometime. :)
I went on the NYMR last summer. At that time the steam was only between Whitby and Grosmont with a diesel doing the heritage only part.
I new you were there I would have said hi since a volunteer there
The NYMR never stops at Sleights and Ruswarp.Ruswarp is quite a short walk to Whitby and has quite a nice shelter to wait in.Sleights has a horrible shelter with those seats you slide down and very little shelter either.
That Diesel is a BR class 101 built by Metro-Cammell.
hilarious - and brilliantly observed - tribute to a certain other youtuber!
Interesting how they had to couple a diesel, I've seen nymr steam trains in Whitby station before
I remember travelling on Mark 1 coaches in scheduled service 👵🏻. Not hauled by steam trains though usually Class 56 locos or similar.
the best bit being behind the class 25 rat the last one that can work on the BR mainline
great shots
Hey nick, can you do another Q&A? and i had a thought you and natt __ so so
Pls do the watercress line from Alton to alresford next 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
10:17 ghost in the background, playing with the bag or whatever fell.
Excellent video
Mk1's are great, but the ones with Commonwealth bogies are better than the ones with the original bogie design or the later B4 bogie.
Great video.
Levisham to Lewisham point to point?
4:16 class 101 named daisy
Why can't steam engines go to Whitby? Did you see Piglet? Looks like you had fun.
Great video Nick! Just a little thing but it would be useful, from someone who doesn't know the NYMR too well, to explain whereabouts the railway is etc just at the beginning! Was a bit confusing as to every stations location and where they are in comparison with each other etc.
Duly noted! Thanks for the feedback :-)
@@NickBadley No problem 😆 video was very interesting as always!! Appreciate your response :D
after a train that i had today being so late i had to do a request stop i feel the pain of a short 45 mins
Oh a choo choo train
To answer your question yes that was a diesel which is a 105 I’m pretty sure
wonderful yet again
The most popular and I didn’t know it was real until now
Steam can run to Whitby
Yes however the steam locomotive we had wasn't able to run on the mainline so it had to be switched to Diesel
When are they going to reconnect Whitby to Scarborough? It just isn't the same by bus.
Grosmont is beautiful
That DMU is a class 101 train.
i love the NYMR
I know it’s amazing
You haven't been on a railway until you have travelled behind a steam engine.
Point to point Lewisham (London) to Lewisham (North Yorkshire
Did you get annual tickets or was that just a 2023 offer? A bit of loco gen wouldn't go amiss.
Our tickets did come with a free return within a year yes!
@@InkItOut Looking forward to the follow up video already!
I Have Been On This Line!
I'm Ron Pickering
Correct me if I am wrong, but I do believe the SVR is a bit more popular (with enthusiasts anyway).
I don't know which one's more popular overall, but I think the NYMR has been cited as the most popular heritage railway for quite a few years now. Though I hope the SVR's up there as well (it's my local line, so yes I'm biased!).
@@dominicbarden4436 Fair enough mate, I wasn't sure but a bit surprised it wasnt the SVR.
first
Nobody cares
