I suppose this doesn't work with (foreign) staff reduction cards? :p
On the London Underground, I used to buy a ticket to Mill Hill The Hale, a station that closed in 1939 (it was the one after Mill Hill East) and used it on the bus. The facility only lasted until the track was lifted for the M1 to be built in the early '60s.
Motorways ruin everything! 😢
@@caramelldansen2204No -_-
@@caramelldansen2204 so true
There really needs to be a rail replacement barge between the stations, of the canal was the shortest route!
Going to stations that you can't even get onto is literally a pointless journey lol 😂 especially if the £2 bus fare cap is valid for the buses then there's no point buying train tickets to the stations as it'd be cheaper getting a bus ticket!
HOW DID YOU POST THAT ONE DAY AGO

Just rub it in, we pay full costs in Scotland on the buses.. 😢
@@walterfillingham I'm so sorry.
Oh, we have the opposite thing in Switzerland! We have a trainstation where trains stop, but you cannot buy train tickets to that station: Sagliains in eastern Switzerland. It's because, it is only an interchange and you cannot enter or leave the station by foot.
Manulla Junction in Ireland is the same - there's only an emergency access point; its an interchange between mainline and branch line.
I'll need to check both of those out. @cian87
Dovey Junction in Wales is much like that, though you can buy a ticket to it. There is a footpath to the main road some distance away, but nothing but the road when you get there.
Cornbrook on the Manchester Metrolink used only to be for interchange between lines when it first opened, but now it has a street entrance. Smallbrook Junction on the Isle of Wight is only for interchange between the electric trains and the preserved Isle of Wight Steam Railway, with no external public access. Berney Arms in East Anglia has no vehicular access, but can be accessed on foot or by boat. Corrour station on the West Highland line has no road access, but there are private tracks and it is about a mile's walk from Loch Ossian youth hostel.

And don’t forget Middlewood station! Until the 1960s the station had two levels (like Tamworth today) and there was no pedestrian access into the station, so it could only be used for interchanges. When the high-level line was closed, Middlewood obviously lost its purpose as an interchange, so it would have been easy to just close the station completely… but instead, to better serve the local area, the closed line’s trackbed was used as the access footpath, finally giving the remaining low-level station an entrance!
You've had this idea for three years and were waiting for 2024 to make the video because "20" looks better than "17" in the title. We know RUclips trickery.
Wish I could say that was the case! Hah..
Norton Bridge, Stone, Barlaston and Wedgwood were served by a single unit shuttling between Stafford and Stoke, the service was withdrawn because there was nowhere to put the unit out of the way at Stoke and the cost of improved trackwork was not justified. Norton Bridge was an island platform accessed by a footbridge, this became unsafe so the station was closed. The junction at Norton Bridge was rebuilt as a flying junction so moving the track away from the existing platform. Services to Stone were reinstated when the Birmingham to Liverpool service started. Wedgwood was for pottery workers to travel from Stoke.
Used that service in the 80's, my memory says it was a slow service from Manchester to Birmingham - but I could be wrong. I got it from Stone and it was a popular service.
It surprises me that there was nowhere to put it out of the way outside Stoke station, considering on the line just north of the station is some sidings which I rarely see get used
@@anerdtravels That surprises me too since about 15 years ago (when I lived in Stafford and was working for Staffs Police) I and had to input a new record on the PNC (Police National Computer) for a person who had been caught attempting to steal a diesel locomotive from those very same sidings just to the north of the station!!!
I never travelled there - but I purchased a ticket online on the last day British Steel Redcar station was open, from Redcar to British Steel. I still have it on email.
These two stations Wedgwood and Barlaston still have no service , services to Stone got reinstated and Norton Bridge was officially closed .
I bought a ticket from Anderston to Balloch in 2020 and was surprised to see the ticket was for Balloch Central, a station which closed in 1988. Balloch station replaced it to enable the level crossing in the village to be removed.
My neck of the woods! Our canal is generally rather pleasant to walk along, just a shame you didn't get chance to properly experience World of Wedgwood.
In the Netherlands, you can buy a ticket to the never served station Heerenveen IJsstadion, I haven't tried if and how it works out tho....
Only serviced in the event of sporting events at Thialf, the ice arena in Heerenveen so only valid on those days
@@Trek001 But you can still buy them dated valid on any day and service is not provided with most events, last service was years ago.
Always support a local tea room!
You entered into an express contract.
If you payed for your ticket on the bus, that would be an implied contract.
I did the same thing in 1985, to Garsdale.
God I couldn't even get bus drivers to take PlusBus where I live. How do they have such knowledgeable drivers in Staffordshire
There is also a closed station 'Tilbury Riverside' which the tracks are covered by road, where it still uses Rail replacement since 1992
I love the ad at warrington bank quay 😅
I'll have to add these two to my list of stations I need to visit. Usually I don't try to tick off stations if my only option (on that day) is a replacement bus service. But given these are only ever "served" by buses (stopping somewhere nearby), that'll have to do.
Maybe I'll drive to one, get the bus to the other, and walk back, next time I'm in that area.
Ideally I'd buy a proper rail ticket from another station.
You could do as point to point Newport (Essex) to Newport (south wales)
I live in Newport South Wales so this comment gets my approval.
@@Busandtrain123and then extend that to Newport IOW \m/
Unfortunately, Newport (Mayo) is on an abandoned railway line (now a greenway).
The plume of feathers at Barlaston is a Neil Morrisey (Men behaving badly) pub
Should that not be men behaving “Badley” ? 😉
A RUclips food reviewer gave the food there, 9.5 to 10 marks out of 10.
Just realised I was on a voyager going through these stations, potentially on the day you were there 🤠
Norton Bridge was the other station on the line that had a rail replacement bus service, That finished about 5 years ago.
Having watched a few of your videos now , it's very weird to see you on a bus I frequently use and driving around place I know, so well.. like seeing your home town on telly, haha.
Good Vid, very interesting Subject matter!
Thanks Nick and Nat for another interesting video.
When the backup systems become the normal operating systems. That's one of the problems of redundant susyems as it removes the incentive to fully repair the original system. They really should include some form of insurance to pay for repairs with their redundancy plans
Another great video Nick. I particularly enjoyed this type of video.
Now try Teesside Airport!!
The Crapiest Airport Station in the World
@rockerjim8045 this is quite simply because they withdrew the bus service between the station and the airport terminal. Hence that station became less used ..... etc ......
Durham Tees Valley, it’s now called - trains rarely stop there!
@@caitlinmcclare1271 same thing with East Midlands Parkway
I would if I could 😪
I wish these would reopen, it seems ridiculous to keep them closed when they’re still functional and I imagine would attract quite a few passengers especially with the Wedgwood place nearby
3:00 wo-tuh
@NickBadley I have a point to point idea: From Waterloo (merseyside) to Waterloo (london)
A good idea for these closed stations would be to re-open them as tram stations. TFW are getting some tram-trains for my local line (South Wales Valley Lines), so I say they get some tram-trains for this section, and re-open the closed stations mentioned as metro stations.
Actually it's not so weird.
In Bristol, since First Bus and GWR are both under the First Group, in any case where train service is suspended, you can get on replacement bus operated by First Bus. And alternatively you can use the train ticket on any First Bus routes that head to that bus stop, as long as the ticket goes to a station on the route of the bus.
If the bus company had agreement with the train company, then it's sensible to let passengers make use of a more frequent route.
That there's a rail replacement bus is not weird - but that it's been that way for 20 years is.
You'd think in that time (especially with the physical conditiom of the platforms being as bad as they are) that the stations would've been officially closed, and people just expected to buy a bus ticket if they wanted to get to/from those places.
The seats at the end of the bus are always the bumpiest, actually
Brilliantr video Nick, I've been through these stations on a train a few times, hopefully at least one of them will get reopened in the future.
Reminds me of tilbury docks
I wouldn't call Wedgewood a 'small' museum! If you go in, though, zip your plastic card away, or you will spend a small fortune! - - - One small advantage of walking along canal tow-paths rather than along roads - there's less chance of getting flattened by a big truck!
Nick, congratulations. I don't think I've laughed so much 👍
These stations have had a fun lot of "rail replacement" buses, X1, 14 and now 100
I knew exactly where you were as soon as the train doors opened. I always wondered about these stations :D
Its funny that the rail ticket is a driffent ticket from the bus ticket, in Germany there the same ticket if they are in the same transport association but you can get tickets from one to another. And we have a pretty similar situation with one of our Rail replacement busses. going for 20 years now and has a normal line number.
D&G operate lots of buses around Cheshire East into bits of southern Greater Manchester... and their buses' quality is usually quite bad😭😭
Loving the videos nick!
Incidentally the Spirit of Scotland Rail Rover allows you to use the shuttle bus between Glasgow Central and Glasgow Queen Street. Also ferries.
Brilliant video Nick, I still need to visit Barlaston and Wedgwood lol However if Barlaston does reopen, there would be plans to officially close Wedgwood but that was years ago, not sure what the update on the future of both stations
I’m surprised the Do not alight here plates aren’t over the station names (like what can be seen at the decommissioned Rochester station)
I’m getting Geoff marshal vibes 😂
The way things are going you will have to go to Crewe or Stafford to get anywhere from Stoke. The LNWR services are all but gone and no one seems to care.
It really irked me that they scaled back the LNWR route from Stoke. Under London Midland, it used to run between Manchester/Crewe and London via Stoke.
Then after the franchise switched to LNWR, it became the Crewe to B'ham route via Stoke.
And now it's been scaled back even further to only go as far as Stafford.
@@anerdtravels It was a great service and they seem to determined to kill it off. Popular as it was a low cost way to get to London on a stopping service that made commuting between towns on the Trent Valley a great option. Now Stoke is cut right off from the rest of the county without a change at Stafford and it's grand plan to be at the end of the truncated HS2. For the impoverish City of Stoke the £160 fare to get to London before 1PM is a joke.
6:59 it's buddy holly 😭😭😭
As I live nearby it is an odd one, and if you go to Stone on a return you can also get the bus back even if you've taken the train there, not forgetting to go to the bus stop not the train station. Talking of which I never really know why the bus doesn't stop outside the station, I'm sure that's what a replacement service is meant to do?! Both stations were side-lined after the west coast line upgrade and really should have been re-opened. The London Midland service could stop at these stations but they'd need a lot of work and around 100K a year maintenance costs. There's no appetite for that at the moment, but the HS2 cash might come into play. You might as well reopen both if you're going to do, we'll see! Really could only happen here with our public transport last policy. It's a shame Norton Bridge was fully closed, but the changes at the location meant this station just wasn't feasible any more. The changes involved building a whole flyover section and including a station would have meant it had to be fully rebuilt elsewhere.
You just got a new sub, love you two guys 😊❤
HS2 north of Birmingham is not cancelled, it’s been stopped temporarily prospered.the infrastructure wil be buit to continue onwards not filled ended ie will be a thought station not a terminus station or built outfit but have the exit safeguard.
Also how many more not just west coast but all networks that’s mothballed rather than closed
Nearly on my 6th month on subscription, love the videos
1:29 Since when was John bishop driving buses now 😄😄😄
As a former Station Manager (down south) I would say if the stations aren't served by a TOC then there's nobody responsible for changing the posters, maybe Network Rail should step forward and update them... as for reopening, I cannot see it happening as there doesn't seem to be a demand anymore and the paths for stopping trains have probably disappeared too. I also wonder how the RSP works for paying the bus company their share of your train ticket! Great video but you have left me with unanswered questions about the railways over a decade since I left them... 😂
While there's no services serving the station, the station is still managed by West Midlands Trains (company who run the LNWR brand), so they're responsible for updating the station information boards.
ORCATS probably has some fun with that ticket, but I'd imagine Network Rail simply pay £x/year for acceptance by the local bus rather than actually allocating revenue from the tickets themselves.
@@AbsoluteTVYTPresumably, I know of a similar situation if the line between Birmingham and Stourbridge gets shut down the local National Express West Midlands bus service from Brimingham to Stourbridge would take the train tickets. I've seen them have this up within a matter of minutes of the last service running during an unplanned closure due to flooding. That makes me think there must have been some kind of contingency contract already in place. Probably something along the lines of a retainer agreement with an annual fee and pre set marginal fees per hour or day in which the service is called upon. I would have thought that it would probably be contracted by the franchisee with the legal obligation to provision that service including presumably contingencies since they are the ones assuming the burden of a duty to provision.
Surely whoever was changing the posters before lockdown (despite not stopping any trains there) just needs to come back and change the posters again.
I was trying to figure out who Nick reminds me of and it finally hit, his personality seems to be very similar to Daniel Radcliffe's.
Here's an idea for a pointless journey: New Mills Newtown to New Mills Central. If you time it right you could utilise the once per week Stockport to Guide Bridge as part of the trip.
I wonder why they updated the boards from 2004 until December 2019 (or a bit later basis on the a COVID signage at Barlaston) but not since?
Nice little error on that sign, definitely no second e!
Barlaston railway station should be rebuilt and to be reused and to be renamed as Barlaston and Wedgwood with Wedgwood station to be dismantled as it’s not really a railway station. Have you been to Polesworth that is also on the West Coast Main Line just north of Rugeley Trent Valley and it only has one platform in use heading north.
The problem at Barlaston is the non-existent parking. Until recently, Wedgwood would have been the better choice of the two to re-open as it had a car park already there (originally used as overspill for the Wedgwood factory). Unfortunately, Network Rail has missed that particular bus (pardon the pun) as the land has been sold off by Wedgwood and will be used as part of a new canal marina being built there.
Nice one Nick! I genuinely didn't know these stations existed, gonna try asking for one at the ticket office tomorrow 😂😂
Brilliant video sir, I hope nat tells you off!
I there Nick my old china ( Wedgwood), get it? Good video from the pair of you. Keep up the good work....
IBM in Inverclyde is the same, it’s technically not closed just has a service suspension. IBM (yes that IBM 🖥️)closed in 2016 and has since been demolished but the station was still served with an hourly service until 2018. This has now stopped but it’s not been officially closed because the site of the factory is earmarked for redevelopment but nothing has yet come to fruition. There used to be signs on the platform that said “This station is for staff and contractors only. The area outwith the platform is private property” in other words if you don’t need to be here, don’t be😂😂 it’s seen better days now thanks to vandalism.
I realised there were more stations like this but couldn’t have told you where apart from the obvious British Steel, Teeside Airport etc thanks Nick! 😊
I don't think that has a bustitute service and you can't buy a ticket there either
@@grassytramtracks never said it did but it’s on a list of stations which has a service suspension but ain’t closed, like the two in this video… hence my comment.
Probably cheaper to keep them "open" rather than closing then. Unique isn't it.
You can buy a ticket to Tilbury Riverside, but there is no track there, so you have to use a bus service
Shocking the signs are still Regional Railways
This video is definitely missing an afternoon tea 😋
That is crazy how they can still offer train tickets for a station that they don't stop at. Surely they'd just advise you to use a bus at this point? Feel bad for those who live close to Wedgwood and Barlaston though
The term you are searching for is: 'service bus'.
That's actually extremely interesting
In the industry, the double arrows are known as the arrows of indecision.
According to my just bought 'AA 2023 Easy Read Britain' atlas (p114 D4) there is as station at Wedgwood but not at Barlaston; does the AA know something that isn't generally known?
I wonder how many more of these that are not legally closed that Geoff Marshall and Vicki Pipe haven't been to?
What’s the deal with sirens at the crossings? We got bells over here
I love you much I bought some and it’s so good, especially the phone case
World of Wedgwood is where the world famous Wedgwood pottery is
You should have brought a ticket between them! 11:34 Unexpected Canal Walks are much better than Unexpected Canal Swims!
It actually doesn’t let you buy it between them or even between Stoke and either of them, it only worked as we bought it from Warrington
Oddly, you can't actually buy a ticket between the two stations explicitly. Probably because it's much more logical to just pay the bus fare.
Edit: looks like Natt beat me to explaining it by 4 minutes! Didn't appear on my end cause I'd had the page open for a while!
@@NickBadley There is a fare you just need to find a ticket machine that will issue it. The apps won't because they try to plan the journey and fail to find any trains. London Overground Ticket machines have a Tickets from Another Station button for these very occasions.

I use Southport too. However I'm 17 metres nearer to Birkdale. So when going to Liverpool, it gives me an extra 4 minutes.
I wonder if the lights on the platforms still switch on at night.
What was the price of the ticket? I've got to assume it would be more than the regular bus fare, even though that makes no sense really.

Still no footbridge (like Pilning)
Dose it need to meet carriage of condition, ie if you buy a dog ticket do they have to allow or do they have to allow luggage and so on that buses may not norm allow
