Hey glad to hear it! I’d love to see your work over at Proko.com where you can post images of your assignments under the sculpting videos. Keep up the good work!
I really like your videos, they are very helpful. Here I would like to point out you can clearly see it's a female face BEFORE you even add the eyes and other details (4:20)... AND also at the very end when you remove those features again 😮😉 I need to focus on that more in my own sculptures: to go strictly from big shapes to details and not skip back and forth 😬
great.. enjoyed that.. thanks.. now, i'm going to be using air-dry clay, and try sculpt an orc's head.. so plenty of leeway heh.. i have a full 3d digital model as i sculpted the head in blender (3d modeller) a couple of years ago.. fingers crossed.. thanks again :)
Absolutley love your videos. Questions: How much clay did you use for this masterpiece and how much time? Your Proko course is interesting. The humor you have added keeps me engaged.
This seems way more difficult than starting with a block and removing clay. You ever do it that way? I wanted to try sculpting but this way seems very difficult
I find it to be the exact opposite. By starting with a block and removing clay there are thousands of landmarks and features to locate and triangulate but by starting out focusing on only one thing at a time (the side profile for example) it's much easier to accurately capture that and then you can use that to locate the other features and start to triangulate the other forms of the portrait. Portrait sculpting is difficult no matter what but by breaking it into these steps that are more formulaic I've found that students are better able to more accurately represent the portrait. It might be worth an experiment though and you could try both methods and see what works best for you.
@@SnowShadyLP yes similar concept. Focus on mass and direction of hair more than texture is generally a good piece of advice when it comes to sculpting hair.

This is a bit smaller than life size but I'd say about 6lbs for life size. depending on how much of an armature you build inside the sculpture of course.
new to portrait sculpting and found this super helpful and detailed, thank you so much! I do have a question about the type of clay - do you have any content around the different type of clay or is it all totally personal preference?
Glad you found it! There's definitely advantages and disadvantages to different types of clay so it depends on what you want your workflow to be. For mold making I like a non-drying modeling clay like Chavant NSP medium. For baking in a normal oven I'll sculpt with aluminum foil and then finish with polymer clay like sculpey, and if you have access to a kiln then natural clay like terracotta can work great for portraits so you can fire them and have a finished sculpture as hard as stone. Let me know if you have other questions! @@breenafain4531

Hey thanks! yeah I think beginners often neglect the overall structure of the head and that's actually where a lot of the likeness comes from.

I love watching your videos while studying 👍
Glad to hear it.
Missed you at the first ever plein air sculpture event in springville, Heard you bought the farm (hehe) in IA. cool but we'll miss you out west!
Yeah Utah was just too crazy expensive for what we wanted for our first home. Hopefully we'll be back before long. How did the event go?

How do you make plasticine solid and a permanent sculpture?

hello! this is super late but would facial hair work the same as head hair?

How much clay did you use for this sculpture? I’ve never used this type of clay. Can I still do this technique with regular drying clay?
I probably used around 4-6 lbs for this one. Yeah you can use other types of clay with this technique.

if i were to use clay that needed to be fired how would i fire it after im done if I molded it around something

Very well explained :) What kind of clay is this? Where will I get this ? Any link to buy this ? It dries out or remains soft ?
Chavant nsp medium. It's plasticine clay that doesn't dry out so it's for mold making and practice. reusable.

How much clay is required for this life size head ?

There different types of the clay you are using : soft, medium, hart. Which one do you use?
I use the medium (though I prefer a little firmer so I actually mix 1/4 hard and 3/4 parts medium. but most people would probably prefer the medium.)

IT looks like a very fat one......First ,I thought he is using wax for modeling.......
Chavant nsp medium for this one
Would it be better to use hard instead of medium?
Hard is like wax. Good for small sculptures.

@@hosseindamavandi4479 it means it’s oil and wax based so it doesn’t dry out like water based clay. It’s for mold making.
Is this the finished product? What’s next?
This was a study but the next step would be making a mold and casting it in resin, plaster, or cement.
