My 2018 Tesla 3 after 4 years texted me telling me my 12 volt battery was faulty. Tesla texted me 15 minutes later. They came out to my wife’s job and replaced the battery the next day. It cost me $194. I was very impressed.
@ I forgot they also replaced the wiper blades and checked out a rear seat recall. There is a plastic clip in the panel next to the drivers door they also replaced. I was only charged for the wiper blades and the battery.

We had the same 12v battery issue earlier in December. We go to the Normal service center. Another error came up which was related to the battery. It said it couldn’t be put in park. Crazy. We drove it there for our appointment, which was the following morning. Took about 1 1/2 hour to replace. All fixed.

Well, I have a 2022 Hyundai Ioniq 5 with 25,000 miles, 12V lead acid battery, no problems. Before, a 2011 Nissan Leaf, the factory 12V battery lasted about 6 years and I replaced it myself with a battery from a Nissan dealership.
I'm picking up my R1S on 12/31, thanks for sharing this, great to learn more about the mechanicals and happy they replaced the battery quicker. Happy Holidays!
That is one of the reasons I was hesitant to get a Rivian. There simply aren’t enough service centers in my area. I am not sure how mobile service works in my area of northeast Florida. Sounds like you’re happy with yours.
I'm glad the service worked out for me, but a lot of this has to do with geography and the number of Rivian's vs the number of service centers in a particular area. Since I am in the Midwest it's a lot easier to get an appointment than someone in California.
If you run a lead-acid 12v battery for your BEV, and it's been 4 years, then get it replaced. If it's failing prematurely, DC-DC converter may be faulty. Or you can add a small solar panel trickle charger to the battery. Keeps the 12V battery from sulfation by keeping it topped off. Tip: be sure there's a Shotky diode inline from the solar panel. Prevents battery current returning to the panel at night.
My 12v battery was replaced by mobile service last September. I had the same error messages you had. A couple months later I had to take the truck to the service center for a home charging problem I was having and to my surprise the high voltage battery had to be replaced to resolve it.
Doesn't surprise me at all. For whatever reason, it's very common for all EVs to have frequent and early 12V battery failures. And if you think about it, the fact that these vehicles have a high tech and robust main battery and it's the small 12V battery that fails all the time is pretty ironic.
Your newer R!S should have 1 battery and a capacitor. My new 2025 Trimax will be under the passenger seat. You should have upgraded to lithium. Thanks for sharing.
He did say the R1S has only one battery. I did not know the battery is under the passenger seat in the Gen 2 Trimax, and I wanted a Lithium upgrade over the lead acid battery. Thanks for sharing this information!
@@thedukeofmiddleville Ever since I ordered my Trimax a few months ago, I have watched every video Rivian on RUclips. Including all of yours, thanks.I've learned a lot, both on and off road. I take delivery in a couple of weeks. I am ready and stoked! Wahoo!!!
I mean, is it any better if you have a modern diesel, modern petrol? They all suck, my friend. If my DPF clogs up I gotta lift my car or get a tunnel and take things apart. If I drive, it will destroy the DPF altogether and it will disable turbo, throw hard codes, etc. Point is, modern emissions kill everything. If you can get a pre-emission diesel (TDCI or TDI), or a petrol with no direct injection, like an old Camry or Honda, it will last forever.
This was a great video and I like that Rivian allowed you to record, thank you. It helped reduce some anxiety I have with my 12 ‘23 R1S. I wish I knew which VINs are impacted by this battery supplier. Also, have you experienced any vampire drain prior to your battery replacement? I wonder if this new battery will solve this known problem.
I have been losing around 1-2% a day when its really cold outside, but nothing really noticeable. I also run Gear Guard, so that will drain the battery. Thanks for watching!
Had this happen to my Hyundai Ionic5 on Friday. Called Hyundai Roadside service. They got there in an hour, loaded it on a flatbed and took it to Earnhardt Hyundai. They had a loaner car for me which I took home overnight. They had the new battery in on Saturday and I took the loaner back to get the Ionic5. All of this no cost under warranty. All things considered it was a minor inconvenience. I'm a happy camper.
I like the video thank you! My 23 R1T just completely die on me first of the year! Unfortunately I had no warning it just die, so Rivian is coming on Saturday to pick up the truck and take it to the service center in Atlanta so they can replace the batteries, Hopefully this did not happen on the road! It could been a nightmare! Thankfully is in my garage waiting on Rivian.
I have had Tesla mobile service for over 5 years now . Very spoiling and no extra charge. The experience is amazing. I’m glad rivian had it too ! Makes life so easy and convenient.

Great video man i wish we had options to self replace but they are very specific batteries deep cycle with 5000 plus cycle count and low temperature operation you can’t just throw a couple of generator batteries in there.
I think It's important to note, that as soon as the number of EV's increase, this mobile, timely service will prolly diminish. More customers=bad service.
I just put a new 12V battery in my truck, the old one was ten years old. I bought a new battery at the auto parts store for $89.99 and changed it myself in ten minutes.
Seems quite complicated to change out the 12 V battery (and their are two of them). Then it has to be re-calibrated. Certainly not a serviceable item by the consumer.
Interesting that the notification stated that the 12 volt battery problem could reduce range. I wouldn't think it would have anything to do with the range as it just closes the high voltage contactors to "start" the vehicle. From reading the forums I know that Ford EVs have a problem with 12v as well but they seem to have rolled out a few ota updates to better manage the battery health. Hope you had a good Christmas otherwise!
High voltage battery keeps the 12v batteries charged like an alternator would in a gas car. If the 12v battery is not healthy and holding a charge, the vehicle would probably waste a lot of energy from the high volt battery trying to keep it alive.
in an ICE vehicle, the 12V Pb battery usually lasts 6-9 years...my '19 tesla ms 12V battery choked in 70 mo , 4 mo after the HV battery pack failed at 41K miles
Wow! I've only had my EV for less than a month and I ran into this problem! My car is still in the shop and this is day #8! Hope to have it back by next week at the latest (1st week of 2025)! They had to order the battery and freight truck it in!!! Ugh! Not really sure what the cause was but having it plugged into my home current , which is as slow as ever is when this happened! Getting nervous about having an EV! Thanks for sharing.
I’m a Tesla MX owner, and I’ve learned that the 12V battery should be routinely replaced every 3-4 years even if no warning pops up. Loosing the 12V battery can brick the vehicle, and it can happen without notice.
When I change my 12V battery, I put a 12V battery charger on the terminals to put the vehicle on life support so that no vehicle data are lost in the change.
Mobile service is fantastic from Rivian and Tesla. Rivian really needs to work on the service centers forcing you to drop your vehicle off for days for something that takes 30 minutes....
I'm glad Rivian promptly sent out a technician. All of these new vehicles have a lot of battery draining technology, i.e., cameras, surveillance, big screens, phone connections, etc. I don't think these old fashioned car batteries can handle it. There are some lithium batteries that would be better, but which ones are recommended for modern vehicles?
Why did the battery die so quickly ??? I have one car that is from 2013 - I have no idea where the battery is - it has never had an issue. So … I am not impressed at all.
These batteries cycle on and off a lot more due to the security and location systems. For example, the cameras turn on whenever anyone approaches the vehicle and records them which can be downloaded or viewed on the main screen.
Just like a gas car or disease truck if the battery is going bad your going to get less MPG. The alternator has to work harder to keep the car running so it has more strain on the engine.
I really enjoy my 2025 R1S but if I had understood the 12-volt battery issue prior to my purchase I probably would have stayed with Tesla and bought the Model X. This vehicle has been on the market for too many years to still have this problem with 12 volt. I had an issue with 12 volt during the first month, fortunately after a hard reset it has not come back yet. Not a comfortable feeling when I travel out of state often. Come on Rivian and get your act together! 😡
@thedukeofmiddleville Actually it's not, on my Model Y they had updated to a lithium battery. When I purchase my 2022 Model Y it was already a lithium battery and in three years never had an issue or heard of an issue.
Rivian does have awesome customer service. I owned a Tesla and you couldn’t even speak to a live person. Rivian either gives you a loaner or provides you with a rental on there dime.
@@thedukeofmiddleville maybe the two batteries have to do with right and left side of vehicle remember the tech jumped between the two batteries or is it just the space available. batteries are expensive. I replaced the one in my Ford Ranger $194 no labor charge
I don't understand Rivian service. Why would it take more than an 8-hour shift to replace 1 or 2 12-volt batteries? It's mind-blowing how they run service.
i remember sitting in the Devon,pa tesla srvice center and seeing a guy ACTUALLY CRYING when he found out his POTHOLE broken suspension & 21 in wheel w/tire was going2 cost $4500.00 to replace .. NOT COVERED BY WARRANTY OR INSURANCE
@ Computers are more convenient than typewriters. Cell phones are more convenient than corded, wall phones. My ICE car doesn’t lose range in the cold and refueling it doesn’t take half an hour. EVs are a step back in terms of convenience, on top of being environmental disasters.
Are you serious? You don't think batteries need replacing in an ICE powered vehicle? The difference is you won't get someone to come change it in your garage/driveway/along the road as conveniently as Rivian and Tesla do it.
all the ppl here praising these companies when they sold you a car that can't be serviced by anyone else but the company hell you can't even replace a 12v battery yourself when did ppl become so Dumb
According to current data, electric vehicles (EVs) generally experience greater depreciation than gas-powered cars; meaning they lose value faster when resold compared to gasoline vehicles. This is largely due to concerns about battery life, technology obsolescence, and the rapid evolution of the EV market, although newer models with longer ranges are tending to retain value better than older EVs. This is interesting, I thought it would be the other way around. It will be interesting to see in 10 or20 years what the ev value will be 0@@thedukeofmiddleville
i recommend 200 mile AAA PREMIER TOWING.. my 19 tesla had2B dollied 135 miles 2a service center after the HV battery pack died at 66 mo & 40K.. 64 days & $37k later, my vehicle was returned repaired
Hey Duke, I really hope Rivian is paying u, your endorsements are over the top. Forgive my poor taste, but how much was your vehicle and where is it on trim level?
Just stick a regular charger on that 12 volt battery and it will be fine. I have a 2011 Nissan Leaf and if I don't drive the car for awhile it drains it's 12 volt accessory battery due to EV's have a phantom power draw to maintain their systems. Many EV owners aren't aware of this and the solution is simple and doesn't require a replacement. In my 13 years of ownership I've only gone through two 12 volt batteries on my Leaf.
All I do is research, so please explain how damaging they are while citing credible sources. I provide sources for all of the information I share on my channel.
To me it sounds like a different design flaw. Since people don’t understand how these things work all these companies can get away with playing games like this.
Those are 2/6 volt batteries tied together to make a 12-volt battery. They are simple exit sign batteries what is he charging you for these batteries they're not expensive

These car companies continue to make these cars more unnecessarily complex and expensive.
I like seeing these younger guys working on cars, especially EV’s.

All of these new vehicles have a lot of battery draining technology, i.e., cameras, surveillance, big screens, phone connections, etc. I don't think these old fashioned car batteries can handle it. There are some lithium batteries that would be better, but which ones are recommended for modern vehicles?
I was surprised to learn it was a lead acid battery instead of Li.
Why would failing 12 V battery reduce range?
I believe because it draws more energy from the high voltage battery to run the systems.
This is an issue with all vehicles, including Tesla. At least Rivian was able to detect it before the battery failed.
@thedukeofmiddleville Actually it's not, on my Model Y they had updated to a lithium battery. When I purchase my 2022 Model Y it was already a lithium battery and in three years never had an issue or heard of an issue.
If the 12 volt battery fails your car will not start.
Happened to a friend who had call the dealer.
Rivian does have awesome customer service. I owned a Tesla and you couldn’t even speak to a live person. Rivian either gives you a loaner or provides you with a rental on there dime.
That is great to hear about Rivian’s customer service!
Thanks for sharing!
Rivian should just of given up a little of the Frunk space. And gone with a normal AGM Battery size.
I love the front trunk space. I would rather pay more for the battery.
@@thedukeofmiddleville maybe the two batteries have to do with right and left side of vehicle remember the tech jumped between the two batteries or is it just the space available. batteries are expensive. I replaced the one in my Ford Ranger $194 no labor charge
It would be useful if Rivian moves the battery to a more convenient location going fwd.
I don't understand Rivian service. Why would it take more than an 8-hour shift to replace 1 or 2 12-volt batteries? It's mind-blowing how they run service.
How far away is your service center and did the mobile service come from there? I'm 300 miles from the nearest service center in the US.
it's around 30 miles from the house, but the service center guy said he drives far enough to have to stay overnight in hotels.
Did you slip him a $20
I would have if I had any cash on me.
My dad just had to do the same thing with his tesla model x
Thanks for sharing!
i remember sitting in the Devon,pa tesla srvice center and seeing a guy ACTUALLY CRYING when he found out his POTHOLE broken suspension & 21 in wheel w/tire was going2 cost $4500.00 to replace .. NOT COVERED BY WARRANTY OR INSURANCE
This is not a Tesla it's a Rivian.
A problem I’ll never have in my trusty ICE vehicles.
I'm sure someone with a typewriter said the same thing about computers.
@ LOL dude are YOU seriously comparing batteries in an EV vs those in ICE cars? Replacing a battery in my car takes 2 mins tops. Not a nightmare.
@@hugolafhugolaf Not comparing batteries at all, just your statement.
Got a feeling these EV "mechanics "are going to be real busy
Two six volt batteries. Very complicated hook out. Very bad placement for maintenance.
Of course something happens during the holidays...smh
The day was going too well😅
@@thedukeofmiddleville Lol.. so true
Why dont you charge to %100 not 80?? isn't that like only filling your gas tank to 3/4 full
Replace the 12v battery and tesla gave him a message too.
Why can’t you just put a 12 V battery from any type of make?
How much to change a headlight bulb?
A lot I'm sure.
all the ppl here praising these companies when they sold you a car that can't be serviced by anyone else but the company hell you can't even replace a 12v battery yourself when did ppl become so Dumb
Unfortunately some cars are more complicated these days. Even for a battery replacement.
I replaced 12V battery in my vehicles many times in just 15 minutes, having to call for service appointment is annoying and waste of time and money.
All I can say is I am glad I do not own one up in Tupper Lake
It’s funny to think… in 5 years most EVs will be worth nothing. 100k pissed away. What a great investment.
In 5 years an ICE car will be worth almost nothing, and a car is not an investment; it's a depreciating asset.
Hey! You forgot to tip the Tech 😢
Too bad it’s not easy to replace it on your own
Hopefully one day that will be an option.
i recommend 200 mile AAA PREMIER TOWING.. my 19 tesla had2B dollied 135 miles 2a service center after the HV battery pack died at 66 mo & 40K.. 64 days & $37k later, my vehicle was returned repaired
That's a lie, because it would still be under warranty until 2027 or 100K miles. If you paid $37k to replace a fully covered battery you are....
Hey Duke, I really hope Rivian is paying u, your endorsements are over the top. Forgive my poor taste, but how much was your vehicle and where is it on trim level?
Which Rivian? The R1T or the R1S? Also, I do this for the viewers because its a great product.
I know I cd just look it up, but often what’s published is not “ real world”. Pls post what u paid for both as well as their trim descriptions
Hey was that kid rock replacing the batteries?
that would be terrifyingly incompetent.....
Rivian just got 6.2 billion loan from Department of Energy!
If you do some research. You'll find out how damaging these cars are. I wish you'd check it. 🎉
All I do is research, so please explain how damaging they are while citing credible sources. I provide sources for all of the information I share on my channel.
@thedukeofmiddleville environmenta damage l cost little kids mining cobalt. of the car +++
Title is kind of false advertising. Should indicate 12v battery not EV battery.
A 12V battery is a 12V battery. Any brand with will do.
Yup same with Tesla or evan a gas powered car.
poor guy, handle it
To me it sounds like a different design flaw. Since people don’t understand how these things work all these companies can get away with playing games like this.
What games do you believe they are playing?
Awesome a vehicle purchased that you cannot work on yourself
It’s a computer on wheels. The days of working on a vehicle you can work on yourself are long gone. 23:23
@@bitter-cockroach I can work on my 24 Nissan Frontier js
way too complicated
Those look like my BMW motorcycle battery... CHEAP CHINESE JUNK!!! I've gone through 3 batteries in the last 5 years.
Those are 2/6 volt batteries tied together to make a 12-volt battery. They are simple exit sign batteries what is he charging you for these batteries they're not expensive
There was no charge for this battery replacement or service.
Hope you tipped him for that.
I guess it will pass anything but a charging station.
Those headlights look Stupid not a fan.............
Use a 9v battery 🔋 and keep moving
