Hannah Szenes was a heroic jewish woman who parachuted behind nazi lines in 1944 to fight with the partisans. She was captured, tortured, and executed at the age of 23. She never gave up information about the resistance movement. She left the following poem carved on the wall of her cell just before her death by firing squad
One - two - three... eight feet long
Two strides across, the rest is dark...
Life is a fleeting question mark
One - two - three... maybe another week.
Or the next month may still find me here,
But death, I feel is very near.
I could have been 23 next July
I gambled on what mattered most,
The dice were cast. I lost.
Thanks for this
This song never fails to go straight to my heart.
Learn the history behind this song! Go look up Hannah Senesh and learn what she gave to end persecution during World War II. She is truly a hero.
My favourite song since I was a kid ❤️. Thank you for the emotion and hope
