Great CD post Carl! Some faves also in my collection- Velvet Crush, Nick Heyward, Cotton Mather, The Times….I need to revisit those Rooks and Joe Strummer discs. My recent spins; The Bats At the National Grid, Felt Forever Breathes Lonely Word, New Guitars in Town CD box set on Cherry Red and of course World Party (RIP Karl Wallinger). Cheers Matt

Hi Matt. Some interesting recent listening by you. I struggle to keep up with the Cherry Red releases. I'll have to check out that box set. It was very sad news hearing of the passing of Karl Wallinger, and then Eric Carmen soon after. Thanks for watching and commenting, Carl

Hey Carl, quite a few bands you showed I've never seen before but I do have that Lovin Spoonful disc. I saw John Sebastián a few years ago solo in a small club (acoustic guitar) and he played several of those songs with stories in-between and he was great. I have a few Gene Clark and Tim Buckley CD's but not the one's you showed. That James Taylor Apple release is terrible. I don't know what they were thinking. You're right though, Something In The Way She Moves is a standout track. I'm currently listening to The Rolling Stones new release Live At The Wiltern which came out a few days ago and Human Switchboard, which was recommended by Steve Herold. Great record, late 70s punk. I highly recommend it.
    Love the show Carl!

Hi Tom. I wonder if I saw John Sebastian around the same time as you. He was telling stories and playing the odd song with acoustic guitar. His voice wasn't what it was, but I loved listening to his stories. A charming raconteur. I also saw him at Cambridge Folk Festival in the early 80s. That was something special ... I was being polite when I talked about the James Taylor CD. Peter Asher says in the liner notes that he's proud of the production (or words to that effect). If it had just been acoustic guitar with tasteful string orchestration, it would have worked well. 'Something In The Way She Moves' shows what could have been. Still, Taylor didn't do too bad in the end did he? ... I've seen a couple of reviews of 'Live At The Wiltern', including Alan Rosenberg's. I've seen Steve Herold rave about Human Switchboard on more than one occasion. Having heard a few tracks on RUclips, he's right to rave. A band that slipped through the cracks at the time. I'm going to see if it's still available on CD. Cheers, Carl

Another reason why Cds will always be viable.. the bonus tracks for instance on Gene Clark albums are essential. 😊

Hi JT. 'Flying High' is a CD I return to often. I love 'She's The Kind Of Girl' and 'One In A Hundred' backed by the Byrds; far better than the official reunion two or three years later.

I didn't know ! I used to ask Kai if he could get extras, and evidently.. He always only gets one copy, although rsd would be a different deal. I will have a look.
I found a nice copy of Thunderbyrd" Roger McGuinn in Bangkok.

An interesting and eclectic mix! I have been listening to a real mix too ... revisiting some Jimi Hendrix, Greenslade, The Church, The Only Ones, some early Iggy and the Stooges, some Lou Reed, Neil Young's Prarire Wind and lots of Dylan. Also a lot of electronic music like Klaus Schulze and early Tangerine Dream.

Hi Stuart. I try to have an eclectic mix. A few too many 90's power pop CD's this time ... All of the acts you mention appeal to me. I don't have anything by Greenslade. I might see if anything is available ... Thanks so much for watching and commenting, Carl

Hi Mike. The Gene Clark 2CD 'Flying High' is exceptional. I've been listening to it regularly since the 1990s. It's probably not on catalogue now, but I'm sure you'd be able to pick it up fairly cheap on Discogs or similar ... Considering what James Taylor was like back in the day, it's amazing that he's still around ... Thanks for stopping by and commenting. It's really appreciated. Take care, Carl

Hi Carl - I've only heard the first Nick Heyward album. Judging by your comments, I should look for more. Electrafixion is on my RSD list this time around I'm a fan of Joe Strummer and that album is terrific. I will have to investigate Galen & Paul.

    • @carltweed942

Hi Brian. Nick Heyward is one of the candidates for the godfather of Britpop ... I re-listened to Electrafixion before I realised it was being reissued for Record Store Day. I suspect it will sound excellent on vinyl, because it is a very guitar rock sound. It's not on my wants list yet, but I'm still going through the list ... Galen & Paul is one of my albums of 2023. It got a lot of positive reviews, but I didn't see it featured in any of the Albums Of The Year lists. It's Paul Simonon. What's not to like? ... I don't like to use the word 'genius'. I'll make an exception for Joe Strummer.

Wouldn’t mind listening to some Nick Heywaeds. Those brit-pop alsorans looked familiar? It looked like the soundtrack to a 1997 Kate Beckinsale film, Shooting Fish that I’ve got.
I really need that Electrafixion album… I’ve said for years. Hope I’m lucky for RSD.
Probably my favorite Joe Strukmmer solo album that.
Me? Lot of Judas Priest, Hoodoo Gurus, Johnny Marr, Lloyd Cole, 10CC and XTC this week.

Hi Morten. I've yet to hear a bad record by Nick Heyward ... I've got a feeling the Electrafixion record will be in demand on Record Store Day ... The Mescaleros were becoming an awesome live act. The addition of Tymon Dogg (the chap who taught Strummer how to play the guitar and took him out busking) made a big difference for me ... Some cool listening by you Morten. The Hoodoo Gurus would be the pick for me.

I love that Lovin' Spoonful CD - I agree, they never sounded better. Incredible - I found Flying High just today at a used record store - paid $7.99. I have his solo albums but that looks like an amazing compilation. I like that Strummer album as well. I do prefer Streetcore but still a very fine release. I never heard of Galen & Paul - gotta look for that. In fact, I'm not familiar with some others in your video too. Interesting stuff. Another great video.

Hi Alan. That's a coincidence, you finding 'Flying High' today. It's a wonderful collection ... Galen (Ayers) is the daughter of musician Kevin Ayers (Soft Machine & solo artist; Mike Oldfield was in his band pre-Tubular Bells). Paul (Simonon) was bassist in the Clash. Their album is produced by Tony Visconti ... Thanks for your support. Cheers, Carl

hey carl. i have a pretty good lovin spoonful best of. one of my favorite tracks by them is coconut grove which i first heard because David lee roth covered it on his 1985 EP. I know you’ll think i’m nuts but i kinda like Dave’s version slightly more. cool joe gibbs comp. i like Culture and it was a pain getting a copy of Intl Herb CD. I finally found a copy in Alaska of all places. i remember kinda liking that strummer doc (with a brief appearance by the aforementioned Mr Roth.) Really like your well-worded mini reviews. Did you ever write for a music mag or anything?

Hi Steve. I've tried three times to post a comment on your channel and it has disappeared. I was letting you know that you could watch the follow up to The Young Ones, with Rik Mayall, Ade Edmondson and Nigel Planer, on RUclips. It's called 'Filthy, Rich & Catflap'. I've not seen it since it was broadcast in the 80s. I've flagged it up to watch ... Apart from odd tracks on comps, the only Culture album I've got is 'Two Sevens Clash' ... The Strummer doc is cleverly put together. The director Julien Temple has a unique style ... I'm trying to get my mini-reviews as succinct as possible. Yes, I've written for the UK music magazine Shindig and various fanzines over the years. Thanks, Carl
