I honestly can´t remember what I ate the last time I went to England .. exept once going to McD for the WiFi and then once the terrible breakfast buffet in my cheap hotel the day I departed .. but from before I have mixed memories. What my exchange-partner thought was Pizza broke me, but I loved the Yorkshire puddings his mom made, and I somewhat incorporated pees-spread for my sandwich creations. All the BBQs where bad/terrible. And that I hate vinegar on chips (and crisps) ..Damn .. those soggy "fries"! But the fish was quite okay .. It´s a weird mix of "actually quite nice" and "the rumors are true". I never had indian food in England though .. that could have tipped the scale.

As a British guy, we learn which restaurants etc to avoid after time in certain places. Bill could have ate at some of the crappy areas in the towns he visited. I did two years of grad school in London and sadly British food really is... Well... Not good. I thought it was all a meme, but it really is just a bunch of grease and butter and some of the weirdest tasting beef I've ever tasted. Good side is you do get considerably better as a cook.
I agree on the whole. Fish and chips can be great though and also kebabs (so English) . But the pub culture is where its at ...for drinking ...not for eating. Buy a packet of crisps and a pint and enjoy. If you get plastered you buy a crappy burger on the way home ...who cares what it tastes like.

I've lived in England for 35 years (after 3 years living in Brussels and my native NYC before that) and while there are great restaurants in England, traditional English food is either tasteless and boring or simply unhealthy...and, yes, I know traditional American food is crap (except for pumpkin pie). Roasts and fish and chips seem to be the favourites. So, utterly boring or fatty vein filler.
