i´v owned a 2018 pre-facelift 1.2L i20 since early 2019 and after 5 years of owner ship and 3 trips across Europe it is still going strong and it has been absolutely faultless, the only thing i have had to change (apart from regular yearly maintenance) were the rear brake pads. Try that with a 6 year old VW or Ford....

Why are most people in the comments hating this car? It is hell lot of a car for the price. We have one as a city car in the family (alongside A6 allroad) and it is a super value for the money. We paid like 11.500 eur for the medium trim with alloy wheels and 1.4 (4cyl) petrol engine (which is btw 100 bhp, which is pretty good for a 1.200kg car). Reliability and usability is pretty good too (no problems in 2 years whatsoever). Yes it does not have the infotainment etc (in most European markets it is only in the highest trim), but what you want for the price. One thing though I do not agree with the review: it is really noisy at highway speeds. It is just a car for the city (not mentioning the gearbox with super short gears - and that is the 6spd one). But as a value car for the city it excels imo.

My 2012 i20 came loaded with auto lights and viper, 4 disc brakes with abs and ebd, tilt and telescopic steering, front and rear fog lamps, auto dimming RVM, Electric and heated ORVM, reverse camera with sensors, stereo with 6 speakers, dual airbags apart from the usuals like air con and powered all round windows etc. Also, its 1.4 lt 90 hp diesel with enough punch although I have tuned it for 120 hp with simple mods. Its makes an excellent car for intercity travel and is comfortable.

    Pros:
    Well built
    1.0 t-gdi has good performance
The parts you touch feel luxury.
Cruise control is on the right side of steering wheel.
    Cons:
No infotainment on pretty much all models.
Engine only gets about 70% of claimed economy.
    A lot of grey plastic.
    Cheap seats.
    Non existent suspension.

I bought a used one of these as a commuter earlier this year, so far I've put about 10,000km on it. It's the 1.4l 100hp 6-speed and apart from a faulty gas pedal position sensor (€30 fix), its been reliable.
I'm not a fan of the steering, it's too light and vague, makes highway driving pretty annoying in windy conditions. Then there's also the gearing, which is too short for my taste. I shouldn't be getting up to 6th gear around town, also I shouldn't be over 2000rpm while barely doing walking speed in first gear. The clutch is annoying to get used to, since there's no feel at all and the friction zone is tiny. Build quality and ride are excellent though, especially for a car in this class.
Overall it's got its quirks, but it's solidly built, good on fuel and (at least with the N/A engines) should last forever.

Oh the Indian version gets a lot more goodies but looses something too... V get automatic Projector headlights, auto climate control(on higher spec variants),rear AC vents, centre arm rest.
But v only have a 1.2l petrol and a 1.4 turbo diesel... Sadly no turbo petrol and no false floor on boot...
Am a proud owner of this car...

I've just collected my new (used i20) and I'm really impressed so far, it's got lots of equipment and good safety features. It drives well but the engine does lack a bit of punch so I need to be sure when I move off at a roundabout so that I won't get caught out when another car comes. It's okay when it's up to speed on the motorway and can keep pace with traffic. All in all a great value car with lots of equipment and space. A real bang for your buck. PS 45mpg combined seems pretty good for a 1.2 petrol.

Have the 2016 SE 1l turbo, Annoying things - drivers seat appalling, mine has broken the inside rear seat adjuster in warranty, dealer was not interested have to live with a wobbly seat. Seat belt not height adjustable. Those nice indicators in the wing mirrors cost £110 plus VAT each. The rear parcel shelf support broke on a return from Poole. Fuel consumption is 29mpg to 34mpg on motorway. Speedo under reads by 3.5 @ 30mph, 4 @40mph. Very vocal engine (look at me I do 99bhp and sound like a misfiring 205gti). Torque is ok from stop. But if you follow the gear suggestion you will find that 24 in 2nd is far quicker than 24 in 3rd, steep hills are shite, but there is a hill hold if you run out of power and need to do an up hill 4500 rpm start.
Strange noises, on braking there is a clonking sound - OSR, oddly only heard by me and everyone else, but not the dealer. And other uneven roads the NSR spring sounds like it has broken, thankfully both these noises are not MOT Fails, just like the drivers seat that wobbles inside rear on any hieght setting except top, when I can't get my knees under the steering wheel - which isn't friendly to the larger framed person. The original tyres had band lines in them and were cracking after 2 years, might be a result of being stored in full sun at the Turkey plant.
Dealer support, well I am on dealer number 2, the original failed to pick car up for service 3 and have been to the next nearest dealer who wanted to charge me to inspect the seat under warrranty - which clearly wobbles, prices are high and with £110 for a wing mirror indicator scratch, spotted on this MOT but not the previous, along with a 1mm crack in the outer letter of the front number plate, they are desperate for work, referring 2 items that have passed during all MOT's to date.
Keep or Go - its going. Sorry Hyundai, but when your dealer chooses to charge to look at a clear warranty repair, and finds the most smallest crack on indicator and numberplate to be repaired under the MOT, then you have lost me as a customer.

If you're going for Price alone. Go for the i20. It's also technically more reliable according to consumer surveys. Quality and ride will be better with the Polo however.
That said. If you want a cheaper car with Polo guts, I'd consider the SEAT Ibiza as well. Great car for the budget!

I20 is a great car. My dad has a third one going. 1st was 1.4, 2nd this featured model and now hi has a MY19 version. The newest has an MPG of 55 and very sufficient power for every day use. Only thing I would get as an extra is the vision package, as we live here in the dark, Finland. The stock H4 is rubbish, yesterday fitted a couple of auxiliary high beams on dad's car. The difference is like night and day! The 2nd car had better light output with projector headlamps (which are extra in the new one). Also fitted HB3 HID xenon kit in those. Visibility was awsome, and beam pattern was very sharp.

even 1.2 great for higher speeds. an age ago my dad my Citroen zara 1.4 it had 70bhp it even achieved 125mph on slight down hill with 5 people in car, the only advice do not try jump it as springs back like bouncy ball. the 1.2 i20 has more power and lots more torque compared to 1.4 french car and that did 30k miles a year for 3 years before going to seat diesel. ive got first gen i20 1.2 ive never felt it struggles at higher speeds, easy go over limits far to easy, change in to 2nd early foot to floor that soon get you to 50, one more change if hill 3rd of not straight to 4th or 5th you soon at 70 can can easy sit at 70 revs not that high, ive been in Spanish import right hand drive leon 6 speed 130tdi and at cruising motorway speeds 80 mph old days it was at just about 4k it so high i said to my dad its got 6 gears change up he said he in top gear he did not get tht car would cost a lot for fuel he got leon 5 speed same 130tdi revs were just less half at 80mph. when you look at other cars the i20 1.2 really is not so bad pretty good at motorway speeds. i feel the 1.2 is better option, as the 1.0 it getting worked hard i feel not a long life. funny thing my gen 1 i20 been so good im looking at this age i20 with the updated 1.2 not fussed at all about not having big tv, it has cruise control that the only thing i want extra next car, less to go wrong, but only issue we have tramps in this country its so hard to find one without stained seats and grubby controls, id dread to know how there home is dirt **** as it is true a dirty car most time means they live like tramp at home too so hopefully ones im looking at do not sell as only few right color and clean inside and no stained seats, only other good ones are brown car and brown dash a james may spec what are sure different but living with it for long time unsure about the james may style brown. ive live with engine its reliable and affordable to maintain one weak point 100-120k miles chain can stretch or tensioners can go but that not end world to fix before it goes, £150-£280 for kit and 4-6 hours to fit and my local garage good rate so about £600 prob tad less whats not bad and clutch with kit fitted £500 those two things sorted that another 100k miles it cheap ish motoring. only thing don't like tire pressure monitoring just a thing to fail but other things looks a button to turn off so all good

Guys, Im stuck. I am used to drive Ford Cougar 2.0l 96kW atmospheric, Alfa Romeo Brera 2.4l 147kW turbo. Now we plan a baby, moving etc. So I need to pick a new family car. Price tag is around Hyundai i20, Kia Rio, Peugeot 208, Peugeot 301, Toyota Yaris, Suzuki Swift, maybe Ford Fiesta. All year 2018. Problem is all those cars have around 60-70kW. I dont want three cars or two (my wallet already bleeds for first two mentioned cars). Which car in price range can you recommend me that isnt boring (slow as dying snail) and is family car? Tough one.

I just got a i20 as rental for one week and I was about to cry. After 60 mph, you cant hear your passenger because of the windnoise and rolling noise from the tires, suspensions were crap if you listen carefully you can even hear the voices of lane strips when you pass over them, I can't remember if it was a 1.0 or 1.2 or 1.4 but it never wanted to accelerate. İn a conclusion, once, I drove a dacia lodgy and it was way better at everything. I come here to see younshitting everywhere because of your disappointment but I got dissapointed.

I own this car the biggest problem i have with Hyundai and Kia is that the Gearbox usually struggles going into reverse and 1st gear and the economy is not really great i drive around town and i only get 30.3 MPG plus they are quite slow which is not very good in this day and age. They really need to get rid of these dated gearboxes and engines.

Mat can you please make a review of the new 2017 facelifted Alfa Romeo guilietta which has improved so much than the old one that you have reviewed for carbuyer.. I’m in the market to buy myself(26 years old) a car and I can’t decide which is better opel astra or Alfa giulietta.. my mind says astra but my heart goes with the beautiful giulietta(exterior and interior).. you ve made a review for astra, but I would like to see a “in-depth review” for giulietta from you and I think that no one reviewed the new one so this would help many who are after alfa as an alternative..
