I think another reason Byleth was so disliked was the fact that Byleth was the last reveal for Fighters Pass 1. I believe they revealed pass 2 sometime after but people were excited after the first four in the pass only to see another Fire Emblem character. Personally I didn't really like most of the dlc picks including Byleth so it wasn't that frustrating for me.
well, the previous characters were third parties, so a sudden inclusion of not only a first party but from an already overpresented franchise understandably caused soreness
@@R_wir3 The reason is in Japan, RPGs are everything to them the same way Shooters are popular in the west. It's just Nintendo finds it easier to put in more Fire Emblem characters than to use Monster Hunter, Golden Sun, Final Fantasy Tactics, or Tales of.
@@R_wir3 I feel like if it was a new Pokemon character they'd still get hit with hate. Sure Pokemon are more unique in their design, but they are kind of expected in a new Smash game. It's just a matter of who from the latest gen that gets added.
Absolutely, and it's possible that it was supposed to be a pass 2 fighter but they took too long to develop for the first pass. If Byleth was in pass 2, they'd get a shrug at most.
The ironic thing for me about Byleth is that I was so upset with their inclusion, and now they're my main and the only character I can play consistently in the game
@@OrangeToadGamer Amazing! When I saw them join Smash, I thought "I don't know you, but I like you!" and they were the first fighters I obtained from DLC.
It's actually the opposite for me. Was pretty excited about their inclusion. But turns out I don't like their moveset very much. It's pretty sluggish and instead of properly representing Byleth's actual in game skill set they just steal the other lords' weapons. Barely even using their own signature weapon and its unique properties.
@@susiehaltmann3342 I think Japan considers Byleth a fine choice??? Strategy games like Fire Emblem are more popular in Japan than the US. Remember Lucas was added despited this game not being localized.
Banjo needs to be very patient and attack when the opponent makes a mistake or be campy if Banjo can't find an opening. He's kinda like Sonic in a sense. In Banjo Tooie, boss fights are about running away from the bosses until they expose themselves. It also take about 6 mins to beat the Hag 1 in Banjo Tooie as well. Breegul Blaster can be used to pressure opponents. One trick I discovered is that Banjo can edge guard with nair, and if Shockspring jump isn't enough he can use Wonderwing to make it back on stage.
Sucks, because I used to main Banjo and Kazooie, and I stopped because, while it was funny to destroy people with them, they just didn't feel right and could kill people in ways I felt were satisfying (besides Breegull Bash, that Forward Smash was beautiful). And this is all coming from a devoted Kirby main. 🤣
@@Mr.Cynical What about burying the opponent and using ether up tilt or billdrill? There's also forward air, back air while opponents are trying to recover to the edge of the stage, Banjo can use breegul blaster to knock the opponent into the air turn off blaster and immediately kill them with up tilt. That last one is difficult to pull off, but I've done it a few times.
@@orangeslash1667 No those are all fine killing options. I just didn't feel any of them were that satisfying to use. Though, I did forget burying to Up Tilt. I love using that on people. 🤣
@@Mr.Cynical I just discovered that you can grab bomb quickly using up air and if you use fast fall it'll be enough time to throw it at the opponent. Meaning that Banjo is usually about ranking up damage before killing them. Which kinda similar to Banjo Tooie boss fights.
I honestly wish there were more Zelda characters. People may argue that the series is just focused on the incarnations of the same 3 people, but so is Mario, and yet they added all the Mario side characters. I wish they added the Zelda side characters. I also wish that the movesets were way better. Infact, I'd rather have Link, Young Link, or Ganondorf's moveset revamped rather than a new Zelda character.
That's not true Mario Characters are all consistency also they have a definitely main cast not only Mario, Luigi, Peach & Bowser they always come back for the next game like Bowser Jr. And Rosalina. Zelda on the other hand their characters don't return for next Game only the incarnations of Link, Zelda & Ganon returns. If people want a New Zelda Character think of the consistencia one's like Impa who reincarnates in every game.
The difference between the Mario side characters and Zelda side characters is that the Mario side characters end up getting a bigger spotlight in the spinoff games (like Mario Kart, Mario Party, and the sports games) which leads to those characters being much more well known compared to a Zelda side character like Impa. Not to mention, outside of Impa, no other Zelda side character has appeared in more than two Zelda games. And in the case of Impa, she doesn't make sense to be her own character when the majority of her appearances have her being a geriatric old woman. Skyward Sword is the only mainline game that has her in fighting shape, but even then she's still an old woman for a good part of it. And even if you were to use her younger Skyward Sword version, it's hard not to see her playing similar to Sheik. I'm not opposed to more Zelda characters necessarily, but I understand why they haven't added a new one when they've already added the necessary core characters
It's not to argue in any way that Zelda or Kirby are good characters in smash, but Byleth also has no character, it just happens that there are 4 very spammable normal in his kit that carry him during the game, with the rest of his kit being as deep and exiting as a pediluve
@@artimist0315 Byelth is all about punishing. Since Byelth has alot of range and power in some his moves. He is the RPG character that can screw you over the most if he caches you making a mistake. The downside to playing Byelth is that compared to Ike, he's less accessible.
Personally, i think the reason why so many people were disappointed was because a lot of the other dlc characters were from franchises that were getting a rep for the first time. Meanwhile, you have Byleth, who's part of a franchise people already seen as over represented. It feels like a waste when compared to characters like Banjo or Steve. Byleth is a victim of people being hyped and imagining all the possible DLC fighters. Because i guarantee that if he were in the base game from the start, nobody would be as upset.
@@orangeslash1667 I personally think that’s also a waste of a slot. If they wanted a Mario enemy, they could’ve gone with Goomba or Koopa Troopa instead. Hell, I would’ve preferred Birdo instead.
I think I found the reason there is so many Fire Emblem characters in Smash, ever since Awakening its been treated as a cornerstone franchise in the same tier as Pokemon or Zelda, think about it, it's the only franchise with a mobile game Nintendo actively maintains, one of only two Nintendo franchises with a warriors styled spin off, two in fact, and is a franchise that consistently gets new games, with at least 2 games per console. I think if Fire Emblem was treated as a cornerstone franchise since the beginning, maybe if the first game was actually localized, then I imagine it would be acceptable that there would be so many reps in the West.
@@orangeslash1667 the real problem is that most JRPG franchises are nowhere near as popular in the West. The only successful ones I can think of that are doing equally as well in the west are Final Fantasy and Pokemon.
@@Charleyyy678 The Fire Emblem may have helped popularized the Strategy RPG genre. Other strategy games outside of FE include Tactics Ogre, Final Fantasy Tactics, Disgaea, Sakura Wars, Shinning Force, Luminous Arc, Valkyria Chronicles, and Knights in the Nightmare. Since Fire Emblem is the only strategy series in Smash, it best to look at it as representation of the strategy genre as a whole. Since the other games that I mentioned, are not likely to appear in Smash.
I think the initial problem with Byleth is that more than any other character his inclusion felt like a commercial. It's one of the few characters many seem to agree doesn't belong in Smash. In a way, his spot doesn't feel earned, unlike characters like Banjo or Steve whom were almost universally asked for and welcomed.
Popularity is more important for third parties than Nintendo characters. Nintendo has to be very carful when asking third parties for their characters, because anything can go wrong like the company saying no, to the character not working well as a one to one translation. With Nintendo characters, Nintendo can do what ever they want, there are very little rules.
@@grunkleg.29691 Sakurai said the reason Joker was allowed to join is because of Persona Q2 on the 3ds, otherwise he would not have gotten in. What about Caption Falcon, Smash bros was released about 6 months after F-zero X?
Byleth ended up being my second favorite character I love how they kill so early Their moveset is really diverse and fun Ive tried every character in the roster due to random and Byleth is one of my favorites
It was just that the game was over-saturated with fire-emblem, sword characters and the DLC pre and post Byleth was also over-saturated with weapon based JRPG characters. Byleth was what made 'getting into smash' feel a whole lot less meaningful. It is unfortunate that it was them because Byleth deserved to be in more than a lot of the other Fire Emblem characters. Not only because their game was one of the only ones in the franchise that were a modest success but they are just a good character. They are fun to play and unlike most of the other DLC they are fun to fight too. Byleth was actually well made and in future Smash games when a lot of the fat is cut I hope Byleth is one of the few fire-emblem characters that remain.
@@R_wir3 Characters like Lucina could easily just be skins. They don't need to be functionally unique if they play almost identically. I wouldn't even necessarily argue that Marth deserves a spot inherently but absolutely if Lucina gets to be an alt.
@@R_wir3 I'm noticing that when ever Sakurai gives a character that stands out like Sephrioth, Hero, and Joker, there's usually a downside. Hero's command select is inconsistent, Joker is not very strong without Arsene, and Sephrioth is light weight. I think the reason why there are so many Fire Emblem characters is because Sakurai or Nintendo wants more safe characters. The Fire Emblem movesets are not very flashy compared the other RPG reps, but it's done that way because they also don't have much weaknesses ether. Or at least their weakness's are not as egregious as Sephiroth, Hero, and Joker. In other words balance is hard.
Smash Bros really wanted to capitalize the success of Three Houses, and there’s nothing wrong with that. But after promoting Lucina to be a clone of Marth, people asking who Corrin is in Smash 4, and Chrom being Roy’s clone in Ultimate, the community globally had no patience with Byleth unless they live in Japan. In other words, with corporate decisions, a lot of interest in Fire Emblem is long gone. It’s not gonna get better if Alear gets added to the next game, because they put FE in a vulnerable state again.

@@Charleyyy678 I think Nintendo wants to add as much RPG characters as possible because Japan takes RPGs very seriously. Kinda like the west loves shooters.
Corrin was added, because Fates sold very well in Japan before the game the released in the west. Usually Nintendo judges RPG's by their Japanese sales.

It’s definitely the fact that byleth was a DLC character. If they were a base character replacing chrom im pretty sure people would have been meh about them.
I still don't mind byleth's inclusion, as I knew from the very beginning they were coming to smash. Because when you look at it, ever since smash 4 the avatar character has been in smash, so I called it when fighters pass 1 was announced.
imagine if we got alear or kiran in smash. i could see them having cool, unique movesets/mechanics, more so than byleth anyway, but i really don't think we need to include more avatars into smash. On that note, smash could really do better to differentiate the fe cast, the avatars are fine, but having half of them share a moveset template is just dumb
@@ridgenyan-botxv367 in byleths defence, they do have a character arc literally the chapter before the smash reveals chapter (which is even funnier because by the time chapter 9 hits (the scene the smash trailer is in) they're hair should be green) also when you learn the backstop for byleth, it's messed up.
Here's the thing when you compare Pokémon and Fire Emblem. People say they're tired of new Pokémon, but in the past 2 games we've only gotten 2 new Pokémon with Greninja and Incineroar. Meanwhile, we've gotten 5 new characters within the past 2 games, 2 of which were just echo fighters, meaning in the past 10 years, we've gotten over double the amount of fire emblem characters over Pokémon, who's only had one modest new character every game which is pretty reasonable.
Byleth was a bit disappointing for the end of FP1 and deserves some representation as it’s Switch Fire Emblem. Corrin never deserved to get in smash though, they deserve more hate
he reason is in Japan, RPGs are everything to them the same way Shooters are popular in the west. It's just Nintendo finds it easier to put in more Fire Emblem characters than to use Monster Hunter, Golden Sun, Final Fantasy Tactics, or Tales of. Is Monter Hunter more popular than Fire Emblem, yes. However he was a mii costume in Smash 4 so Fire Emblem will have to due.
Okay, I KNOW for a FACT that the issue wasn't the sword because the character that almost everyone (especially me) was expecting and hyped for due to some unfortunate timing was Dante from Devil May Cry. The problem was ending the season pass of third party characters with a Nintendo character from a franchise that people already saw as overrepresented.
I think a big problem with him is also that he's just very basic, with a very basic moveset being basically Simon's movesets with terrible specials and a better frame data, and byleth himself being quite a boring hero with no personality and a confusing visual design. At least every other non clone fire emblem characters had a very distinct personality, marth was very graceful, roy was flashy and hot headed, Ike was super strong and hit like a truck, Robin was representing the magic system and corrin at least had the manaketes giving him a more unic moveset. Byleth didn't bring anything new or interesting to the franchise, and was definitely not needing to represent his. The worst part is that his moveset is trying so god damn hard to stand out with all the different weapons making it seem like he would at least have interesting specials but it's just not the case and it gives the whole thing a very unfocused feel and yet it has no interesting tools beside the 4 normals he spams in neutral. I'm not even against promoting new characters from new entries in smash since new generations of player will find their favourite hero be playable in smash, but byleth's inclusion was handled very poorly and making it part of the fighter pass is really lame.
Maybe the most hated at first.. but easily one of the most fun and well designed DLC characters. Even more adored in the years that Leo was winning Majors with him.
Even though I am okay with the character being in Smash, as a Fire Emblem fan, I personally didn't like Byleth being in when they were announced because I personally do believe that their are better choices to represent Three Houses as Byleth isn't even a popular character in their home game as both male and female Byleth didn't even make Top 5 in the official Three Houses fan poll. Either Edelgard or Dimitri as those two are the most popular characters in the game and amongst the most popular characters in the entire series who would have had very unique properties and abilities that would make set them apart from both the Fire Emblem cast and the roster; Dimitri a light footed tank with a lance and Edelgard who is a female armored unit with a magical fire axe. At least with Corrin, it makes sense since despite their mismatched popularity (the female blows the male out the water in popularity) they are the main protagonist of Fates and Robin, though not the main protagonist is a vastly unique from other FE main characters, is a central main character to the story of Awakening and is ranked well enough in several polls to justify their appearance, even both genders making the top 5 of their game and consistently ranks huge in Fire Emblem popularity contests, even actually winning some.
@@ZachHonest I really think both of them would have been epic choices. If I had my way to reboot the Fire Emblem cast, I would replace Byleth and put one of them two in if a Switch era rep was necessary, even give them attacks from Three Hopes on top of what Byleth already has. Claude is really good too, but he ended up being not as popular with people who played multiple routes though he's still popular.
@@yoder6162 I think the reason Byleth was chosen is because if any of the house leaders using three weapons at once would be seen as out of character, not the case with Byleth. The other reason is that one leader is not more important than the other. So Byleth as alts that reference the three house leaders to represent 3 Houses as a whole. Lucina is the same thing, all of her alts represent the female characters of Awakening.
@@orangeslash1667 Why would they? They don't have to use three weapons at once. Just use and represent their primary lance style, bow style, or axe style whichever of the three gets picked like people actually wanted instead of just swords
@@yoder6162 Unfortunately they have to, I usually find spears and bows by themselves in fighting games to be the most boring weapons ever. I don't think they would transfer well in a platform fighter?? As for axes, in the FE wiki@@@ Axes have very low accuracy. I would be indifferent to Byleth if he swapped places with either Min Min or Pyra/Mythra for that 5th Spot for Fighters Pass one, what urks me is that ARMS and Xenoblade Chronicles 2 came out before Fire Emblem 3 Houses. Sakurai said that he didn’t have time to make characters from those games since they started development at the same time, then here’s Byleth from 3 Houses a game that came after Smash Bros. Ultimate From a series that Already 7 Reps and that fact will always leave a bad taste in my mouth and shows the full display of bias towards this series from Nintendo, because that would have been the Final Character for fighters pass and Smash if it wasn’t for Fighters Pass 2. I don’t care how high he places on the tiers list, his results in tournaments or how different he is from the rest of the cast. The fact that he got in before 2 underrepresented franchise which I will remind you had games that came out before Smash Ultimate got in after privileged ass Fire Emblem’s Byleth a game that came out after smash became playable So yeah I hate this characters inclusion.
While I won't say I was pleased at Byleths inclusion, I didn't hate him as I was one who even said back then that "at least he uses weapons other than the sword, so it's not all bad or generic" but I won't lie I would have much preferred a character that used solely the axe or lance for how differently they could have played with a moveset specialized around said weapons alone. (Plus I've always kinda wanted them to add Hector from FE7 to the game for that same reason)
Here's my hot take none of you are ready for. Byleth was a good inclusion and the only reason people didn't like him is because Corrin and Chrom poisoned the well by turning Fire Emblem into the "AND HERE'S ANOTHER SWORD FIGHTER" part of Smash. Yes, Corrin too. Corrin was the second Fire Emblem DLC character in Smash 4, and the only brand-new Nintendo DLC character. He was made to promote a game that didn't exist yet, which is similar to Roy's situation, but worse due to beginning the Fire Emblem bloat. Even though Corrin has a unique moveset, everything about them tossed oil onto an open flame. And all future good "anime sword fighter" characters, like Byleth or the Aigis sisters, have suffered for it. Byleth finally fills the niche for FE's iconic weapon triangle in Smash and introduces non-sword weapons, which is what every FE fan wanted, and Three Houses is both a good game and a staple for the Switch. It was a good call. Without Corrin mucking up the works, and Chrom adding a *fourth* Marth clone out of nowhere, nobody would have cared.
I got a bigger hot take than that when it comes to Corrin: I think Azura should have been the Fates rep for Smash since she uses a lance and has access to the same water magic Corrin uses on top of being the first and so far only Dancer Lord character
to me nobody really cares about swordies, sephiroth and sora didn't get hate for it, i think it's mostly people being angry at too much fire emblem, they could've put a fire emblem character that doesn't use a sword at all and smash fans would still get angry at it. I can see the argument, personally i don't care since i like fire emblem, but even then i would've prefered the 3 houses leaders as trio character a la pokemon trainer instead of boring blank slate avatar again. I also think people wouldn't have been this angry if we didn't get corrin in sm4sh
@@Charleyyy678 But Fate's gameplay is the best Fire Emblem has ever gotten since FE 7. Sakurai said that the main reason Corrin got in is because of Fates success in Japan before the game was even localized. Remember RPG's are usually made to appeal to the Japanese first and fore most.

Byleth was my most requested character because I freaking loved 3 Houses but all I'm saying is if the trailer was shorter and more gameplay focused with less yapping it would've been received better. Before the trailer was revealed we already knew it was a smash trailer not a segment in a Nintendo direct so there was no point of the slow reveal. Also I think they should've revealed Joker->Terry->Hero->Byleth->Banjo and Kazooie. People kept complaining that Byleth was a terrible way to end off the 1st fighter pass so I think this is how they should've done it. Doesn't matter now obviously ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Alright, so keep in mind, while I didn't like every character's inclusion back then in Smash (esp Hero who th is he lol) at the very least they made sense to some extent in terms of representation. Even with Min Min, who came from ARMS, a game people mainly only saw as a glorified tech demo back in 2017-18, at the very least you could say "Well at least the game is represented" but the thing about fire emblem is the game... was already well represented enough in the first place. Keep in mind the West never knew or cared about Fire Emblem as far as I know until 2005 around when Melee came out then realized the franchise existed, then it piqued some interest for the series as a whole, Ike helped too. Then a few other ones in Sm4sh wouldn't hurt either. But... why... make an advertisement for 3 Houses? Why? The game had plenty of fans back then and was pretty well known, so if they actually cared about the game they'd go ahead and play it, they don't need a whole ass smash character to remind them about it. That's what got me about Byleth's inclusion and why I feel like they're the only smash dlc that should've never existed. Because Fire Emblem, again, was already well repped enough in the first place. Keep in mind in the Brawl days when the West found out that Lucas existed, people especially would NEVER shut up about Mother 3, and that was not off of 38 thousand Mother reps but ONE rep that showed up in Brawl. Ever since then until reggie retired people would never stop harassing the poor man about when Mother 3 would get localized to the west. So why the hell do we need EVEN MORE Fire Emblem reps when it's already proven that one Smash rep for a character is advertisement enough? It just never made sense. Byleth is objectively a waste of a slot just because of this. Doesn't help that they're typically a pain in the ass to fight online too, but that's not the main reason why I don't like the characters conclusion.
I think it's really funny how quickly the "thank you for everything Humble Game Dev Sakurai-san" crowd changed their tune the day Byleth got revealed. Low and behold people are still coping about their inclusion years later, when they're one of the only DLC characters who doesn't have some dumb gimmick they can cheese you with. If you don't think Smash 6 is gonna have someone from the newest FE game, you're delusional
Why many people did not like Byleth was because a fire emblem character was something fans of smash did not want for DLC and instead were expecting more third party characters since the past DLC Characters was focus on getting other series to join from what’s most popular and Byleth is basically what everyone not wanted and was just seen as a anime character with a sword clone 17 this could also be said with pyra and mythra trailer where some people were pissed that it is another sword character that could of been a different series comin to smash I think Byleth would be liked if he was reveal in the beginning of smash ultimate but anyways great vid Honest ❤

I believed it at the time and still stand by the belief that the 3 houses rep should have been edelgard. She would have been the first fighter to use an axe in the majority of their moveset. She is arguably the most important character of 3 houses being the main antagonistic, the driving force of the story, and the namesake of the theme song. She was also the most popular character in the game filled with extremely popular characters.

I like male Byleth, never really liked female Byleth's core design. Which sucks, cause while I'm a girl who usually plays male characters, I like playing female characters in the modern FE games for marriage purposes. Second to Pokemon, Fire Emblem is my favorite gaming franchise, I first started playing during Brawl's lifecycle, so I started long before Awakening. I am very happy to see the franchise grow, but even I initially felt like Byleth's inclusion was pushing it when they were first announced. It made me even kinda sad, because a lot of my friends seemed genuinely angry at the time, and I wanted to defend Byleth's inclusion, even despite my feelings, because I love Fire Emblem. I still am glad they made it in, I do enjoy playing all the FE characters, and Three Houses is a fantastic game! Though, Lucina is really the only one I ever get any decent results with, haha.

For me it goes: 64: Jigglypuff - mostly because she plays lame and a M2 or Charizard would have been better but ig they did a clone instead. Melee: Doctor mario, he feels like the most redundant clone added. I rather have had them cut Pichu, Doc and Young Link to fix characters like Roy and G&W. Byleth at least came with a stacked pass so it was okay with coming with 1 dud.

Byleth wouldn't been hated if Sakurai didn't blow the roster by including FE characters to promote FE games that nobody plays anymore, also Awakening made the franchise into a divisive mixed bag, Three House is the only good game of the bunch and what hurts FE the most that none of lords (expect Lyn in my opinion) are that memorable outside of Smash.
Saying that Byleth deserved to be in Smash because "they come from a great game" is a very weak argument, because you can say the same for, like, pretty much every other characters.
I remember my friend asking me who I wanted to see at the end of pass 1, my response was “anyone but a fire emblem character”. Till this day i remember the disappointment and how I was already calling it emblem was gonna in pass 2 and I was waiting for it. Byleth hate is justified cause of timing, another emblem, getting sick of swords, and wishing for a reboot with the weapons of axes and lance being properly represented and not see guys he’s different with weapons but he was not the original owner. Now as a fighter, Nair, that’s all they do. Pit wishes he had a good hit box with his.
I don’t care what anyone says, Byleth is my boy! I had a good nights rest the night before the reveal and woke up just in time to see a character from my favorite game from the previous year. It was a beautiful morning.
I love fire emblem games... I personally didn't like three House's so you can probably guess I didn't like Byleth and still to this day dislike Byleth. She's definitely the biggest disappointment for me in smash ultimate.
Imma say this, Byleth...is a weapon master. Uses a sword, a battle-axe, a lance/spear, a Bow and Arrow, a whip...that's alot of weapons...a Weapon Master.
I remember laughing my ass off during the early high-school morning of Byleth's reveal, all while my friends were silently malding over their inclusion. Now, years later, they're one of my mains, and 3H is among my top games. I was a Byleth believer from the getgo.
I do think it's really fascinating how *desperate* some people were for the character to be bad. It wasn't just that people thought Byleth was bad because they're so slow, people *wanted* them to be bad to validate the idea that the character was a "waste", even after Leo showed off what the character had to offer.
I love Byleth in the game and is a massive FE enjoyer but that trailer was terrible. Byleth right after Robin is one of the best representation of weapons in FE and really goes to show that they don’t need to be including just swordies from that series. Sure hope in the next game they rework other FE characters to have the other weapons they can use from their respective games like Ike with axes or Chrom/Lucina with a bow.
Byleth's inclusion was really just the perfect storm of things. I often think about how Chrom generally had a more positive reaction compared to Byleth, despite being so much of what people hate in the FE characters; Marth clone with blue hair and sword. I think what it comes down to is that with Chrom, he was a highly requested character and they owned up to the fact that he was a clone from the get-go. In addition, Chrom was in the middle of the pack in terms of new characters revealed for the game, and they didn't spotlight him too much, similar to Dark Samus and Daisy. Even people that didn't want Chrom just kind of shrugged it off. Plus, there was kind of a sense that Chrom sort of got snubbed. Plus, he was from a game which, at that point, came out 5/6 years prior. His inclusion didn't feel so much like promotion, but rather like an addition meant to appeal to fans who wanted him. Byleth meanwhile came after FE already saw a huge boost in reps, where Corrin was included for similar reasons to promote a recent/upcoming release, as paid DLC. On top of that, she was the final character for Fighters Pass 1 after having nothing but 3rd Party Characters, and the trailer was just awful. It didnt help that the trailer seemed deliberately designed in a way to antagonize the people it would likely upset. Byleth was also a character that would've been a fairly predictable inclusion. Say what you will about Corrin, but at least that inclusion caught everyone off guard, and there wasn't really any indication the character would be included. With Byleth, everyone could expect a character from Three Houses, but Byleth would be the least surprising character from that game. Again, say what you will about Robin, but nobody was really expecting that character from Awakening and it surprised and caught people off guard. Schaffrillas Productions actually has a really good video explaining and partly defending the number of FE characters in Smash, and I recommend giving it a watch.
They added more obnoxious horrible characters with every dlc that just ruined the meta super pay to win, honestly a lotta friends got who they wanted Joker, Hero & sora where all good editions they might be balanced lookin at sora & hero like garbage but yah every other dlc character it was legit better without them no Minecraft Steve, piranha plant was such a wasted slot, banjo just not fun to play best edition but just unfun to play, byleth was balanced alright I don’t mind fighting them but they r just that another boring fire emblem inclusion buncha bad players just cling to cuz M k Leo or whatever Choomo got results with em they’re fine, but yah once u get into min min and Steve it just became so obnoxious and with how lackluster all the smash ult & dlc editions where how rushed ult was it just fell off I’ll go back to melee but yah ult is kind a trash fire for many reasons I only play it super rarely and casually with people who r super bad just my homies we were SPOILLLLEED during smash 4 with new dlc editions & roster editions looking at incenaroar as a genuine edition to the roster and I am just like nope back to melee

Byleth hate is absolutely justified. You cannot make arguments about him not being a swordie when the character is traditionally associated with the SWORD of the creator. Isn’t it even in his official art? Link is still considered a swordie despite having more weapons than even Byleth, no? The problem is exacerbated by nearly every fire emblem character being a sword lord in a franchise that has lords with different weapon types. Hector immediately comes to mind. Ephraim is also a solid choice. A character like Pokémon trainer that could swap between the three lords of 3h would’ve been more welcome than Byleth. Truly just any character that wasn’t a sword lord. I can’t believe I’m watching a byleth apologist. 😮
They have the same number of weapons, though? Link has 4 - sword, bomb, bow/arrow, boomerang Byleth also has 4 - sword, lance, axe, bow/arrow I don't disagree with you that's just a weird point to make

Funny how we didn’t want byleth but he had a good moveset, but we NEEDED banjo but his moveset is mid

No those are all fine killing options.
Infact, I'd rather have Link, Young Link, or Ganondorf's moveset revamped rather than a new Zelda character.
you aren't the only one dude, same goes for Kirby
Im not a Zelda fan but like why couldn't they add Ghirahim, Impa, Midna, a dang Bokoblin! Something more than variations of Link and Zelda
ike in smash brawl is a represention of fire emblem games in the west
Yeah, somehow Zelda and Kirby have less characters
Fire Emblem is easier to design in Smash. Zelda and Kirby is more difficult. Or at least not without breaking the balance.
What about the potted plant????
The problem is that early Fire Emblem is so hard due to permadeath. Awakening was the beginning of casual mode.

Same, but pls cut the Marth clones lol

I think the reason why there are so many Fire Emblem characters is because Sakurai or Nintendo wants more safe characters. The Fire Emblem movesets are not very flashy compared the other RPG reps, but it's done that way because they also don't have much weaknesses ether. Or at least their weakness's are not as egregious as Sephiroth, Hero, and Joker.

Here's the thing when you compare Pokémon and Fire Emblem. People say they're tired of new Pokémon, but in the past 2 games we've only gotten 2 new Pokémon with Greninja and Incineroar. Meanwhile, we've gotten
5 new characters within the past 2 games, 2 of which were just echo fighters, meaning in the past 10 years, we've gotten over double the amount of fire emblem characters over Pokémon, who's only had one modest new character every game which is pretty reasonable.

Leo is a Fire Emblem freak. Remember he was using all the Fire Emblem cast, except Chrom and Robin. He has a hate boner for those two.
Edelgard would have been an extremely epic choice, especially with her basically being a villain and an axe user.

Lucina is the same thing, all of her alts represent the female characters of Awakening.

I would be indifferent to Byleth if he swapped places with either Min Min or Pyra/Mythra for that 5th Spot for Fighters Pass one, what urks me is that ARMS and Xenoblade Chronicles 2 came out before Fire Emblem 3 Houses.
Although Byleth was a very bad inclusion, thanks to this moment we have her comics with Cuphead.
to me nobody really cares about swordies, sephiroth and sora didn't get hate for it, i think it's mostly people being angry at too much fire emblem, they could've put a fire emblem character that doesn't use a sword at all and smash fans would still get angry at it.
I can see the argument, personally i don't care since i like fire emblem, but even then i would've prefered the 3 houses leaders as trio character a la pokemon trainer instead of boring blank slate avatar again.
I also think people wouldn't have been this angry if we didn't get corrin in sm4sh

Watch Smash 6 combine all these Fire Emblem reps into one character...Alear
Byleth has always been controversial, bad timing, unnecessary promotion of his DLC in Fire Emblem TH and the WORST Final Smash of the DLCs.
I think fighters pack 1 was almost all solid I just think Hero and Byleth sucked just saying why didn’t we get Scorpion now that would’ve been great.
I don't mind "too many Fire Emblem characters."
I mind too few Zelda characters.
Honestly, its about time Skull Kid be made into a character.
@@ZachHonest And Impa. Honestly, we need three new Zelda characters in a single game like Fire Emblem got in 4.
@@themetalgamer9864 If it were up to me it'd be Impa, who could be a Sheik echo (Maybe more like the Melee version?), Vaati since he's a villain from the Toon games & a wind mage sounds fun to play as, & Sidon just because he's the most memorable of the Wild saga chatacters (Also Ganondorf's long overdue for a moveset revamp, either make him fight like the HW version or replace him with the classic trident wielding moblin)
@@fabmanosaurus4795 I think Ganondorf should be redone and give his old moveset to Demise.

Her haters would’ve gone ballistic lol
I know byleth isn't top top tier but why they got better range than the belmonts? As a kirby main I find it uncontestable, corrin is already bad enough.
hot take: I was actually happy with the byleth reveal
Fire Emblem is the only series that had a DLC fighter in both SSB4 and SSBU over more and less notable first part franchises
Admittedly I was one of those who clowned on Byleth a inclusion, now he's one of my mains. He also doesn't have the same Fire emblem issue the others do.
same, but nowadays my mind tends to forget Byleth and Corrin
Still a sword character and a FE character. Wasted slot.
As someone who absolutely hated FE 3 Houses, the Byleth smash inclusion was a second middle finger
Yeah yeah, maybe byleth is not just a swordfighter but then the final smash is just a PNG with some movement
Byleth is fun...but i hate the inclusion.
I think Corrin wins that title Honest...

Lucario
Greninja
Incineroar
Who's missing ?
Or was it a mistake on Zack's part ?
Yea my b. I counted Charizard on accident.
@@ZachHonest he reason is in Japan, RPGs are everything to them the same way Shooters are popular in the west.
He’s still the worst character added in the entire series
For me it goes:
64: Jigglypuff - mostly because she plays lame and a M2 or Charizard would have been better but ig they did a clone instead.
Melee: Doctor mario, he feels like the most redundant clone added. I rather have had them cut Pichu, Doc and Young Link to fix characters like Roy and G&W.
Brawl: Ganondorf, with the design change they should have reworked him. He is also like a bottom 5 character in each game since. All the other Brawl newcomers were solid.
4: Corrin, they already added Lucina, Robin and DLC Roy before this. Bayonetta too since they lied about the smash ballot.
Ult: Pyra/Mythra, they straight up look like hentai characters. Kinda outta place for a “family friendly game”. They also became instant top tiers invalidating other sword characters. Byleth at least came with a stacked pass so it was okay with coming with 1 dud.
Didn't they have to censor Pyra and Mythra's designs to make them look more modest in Ultimate too? 😂
not only that but the character designs in XC1 are nowhere CLOSE to the designs of the blades in XC2, to the point where someone unfamiliar with the series wouldn't be able to tell they're from the same series

Franchise with the most amount of characters. Easy. Pokemon, if you separate the Pokemon Trainer's pokemon into three separate characters.
The sword character argument is kinda silly . Literally most popular game characters use a sword or a gun.
Pls ban me
the hero of smash ultimate
Saying that Byleth deserved to be in Smash because "they come from a great game" is a very weak argument, because you can say the same for, like, pretty much every other characters.
IT COULD HAVE BEEN TRAVIS 🗣️🗣️🗣️🔥🔥🔥
I remember my friend asking me who I wanted to see at the end of pass 1, my response was “anyone but a fire emblem character”.
Till this day i remember the disappointment and how I was already calling it emblem was gonna in pass 2 and I was waiting for it.
Byleth hate is justified cause of timing, another emblem, getting sick of swords, and wishing for a reboot with the weapons of axes and lance being properly represented and not see guys he’s different with weapons but he was not the original owner.
Now as a fighter, Nair, that’s all they do. Pit wishes he had a good hit box with his.
Byleth is certainly a DLC fighter I didn’t care about. But I’ll tell ya, playing Byleth is so rewarding
As a Fire Emblem fan, Byleth was not needed and defo stole a spot for other much needed and deserved characters.
I remember laughing my ass off during the early high-school morning of Byleth's reveal, all while my friends were silently malding over their inclusion. Now, years later, they're one of my mains, and 3H is among my top games. I was a Byleth believer from the getgo.
Because you're a shill.
What I dislike about Byleth is that his moveset feels more like one for BOTW Link.
I do think it's really fascinating how *desperate* some people were for the character to be bad. It wasn't just that people thought Byleth was bad because they're so slow, people *wanted* them to be bad to validate the idea that the character was a "waste", even after Leo showed off what the character had to offer.
I simply wanted all Three Housss Lords in a Super Pokemon Trainer Moveset
the mario characters have 9
the legend of zelda characters 6
the fire emblem characters 8
the nes era characters 5
the switch era characters 3
I love Byleth in the game and is a massive FE enjoyer but that trailer was terrible.
Byleth right after Robin is one of the best representation of weapons in FE and really goes to show that they don’t need to be including just swordies from that series.
Sure hope in the next game they rework other FE characters to have the other weapons they can use from their respective games like Ike with axes or Chrom/Lucina with a bow.
Using "Them" to talk about a plant is so funny
were you being honest in this content filled video?
They added more obnoxious horrible characters with every dlc that just ruined the meta super pay to win, honestly a lotta friends got who they wanted Joker, Hero & sora where all good editions they might be balanced lookin at sora & hero like garbage but yah every other dlc character it was legit better without them no Minecraft Steve, piranha plant was such a wasted slot, banjo just not fun to play best edition but just unfun to play, byleth was balanced alright I don’t mind fighting them but they r just that another boring fire emblem inclusion buncha bad players just cling to cuz M k Leo or whatever Choomo got results with em they’re fine, but yah once u get into min min and Steve it just became so obnoxious and with how lackluster all the smash ult & dlc editions where how rushed ult was it just fell off I’ll go back to melee but yah ult is kind a trash fire for many reasons I only play it super rarely and casually with people who r super bad just my homies we were SPOILLLLEED during smash 4 with new dlc editions & roster editions looking at incenaroar as a genuine edition to the roster and I am just like nope back to melee
terry & Kazuya where such wasted slots because even all my friends whose parents grew up playing terrys fighting game or the ones who go I can play smash but it’s never going to be a real fighter like street fighter or tekken cuz it doesn’t have whatever mortal Kombat inputs u gotta remember it’s not a real fighting game! they don’t even play those characters they just stick to Gannon or little Mac and it’s like well honestly kazuya is kinda a wasted slot then to me cuz no one I know even touches those 2

Byleth got overhated and really deserved their spot.
Fuck Corrin though, Should have been Elma from Xenoblade X.

I dont mind byleth.
Love plant.
Piranha Plant deserved all Byleth's hate!
P. Plant was free though. He's kinda the joke character, so nobody really complained when he got revealed.
Link has 4 - sword, bomb, bow/arrow, boomerang
Byleth also has 4 - sword, lance, axe, bow/arrow
I don't disagree with you that's just a weird point to make
I remember when a lot of my friends hated when Byleth was announced and I was one of the few that didn't mind them being added to Smash. Byleth's a really fun character to play with
Byleth is a really cool character. It's a shame that he was hated on so much at the time.
i feel like everyone knows its byleth or maybe i just remember it since when i saw it happening i just had a huge smile on my face and was laughing so hard to the trailer since i knew this would piss the smash fan base off but at the same time three houses was and still is my favorite switch game so it was also cool for him to be in the game made better by everyone else being pissed and i mean the character him self plays pretty well he is not really broken like the other dlc he is still one of the characters i play the most
I agree with Leo. Byleth is one of the sauciest fighters in the game
I feel people need to play the character first and see if they’re fun before they knock it
