I wish they'd make all the Known Space novels and short stories into tv series. It would be better than doing Ringworld in isolation. There are several things you need to know from previous Known Space novels, the core explosion, Pak Protectors relationship to humanity, the Brennan monster. All of these, and other information from previous short stories and novels, are necessary to really appreciate how giant a masterwork Ringworld is. Niven's books always have huge premises and are built around massive ideas. These are not space operas. They are hard SF. The details are important.
As a big fan of Known Space, I fear that attention won’t be given to the CGI that needs to be given its due - the Kzin and Puppeteers need to be thoroughly fleshed out and believable, and the Ringworld itself needs to be as real as our imaginations think it to be. Don’t want another Jar Jar Binks. Also can’t cheat on Rigworld Conventions - it’s always noon or night, and there needs to be an accurate depiction of “arch light”. I would love to see the cgi team from season 3 of “Orville” have a crack at RW design.
Great news, I'm glad I asked you about it. Of course we must wait for the actual greenlight, but fingers crossed. By the way, Louis is pronounced the French way "Lew-wee" (not a big issue, I didn't realise this at my first reading of the book).
Based on what I’ve seen and heard of the LOTR prequel series so far I won’t keep my hopes up for anything too closely resembling the original Niven stories.
If this is a hit, there a loads of other connected stories set in Niven's "Known Space" universe (some featuring characters from RW) which could be potential spin-offs. The Bey Sheaffer "Tales of known Space", the "Gill the ARM" future noir detective stories etc. Plus the RW sequel novels

Just now watching this in January of 2024 and sadly, your hope that some adaptation of Ringworld would FINALLY be streaming in 2023 has been dashed. I read... I wanna say Gibson describing attempts to adapt Neuromancer, or any of his books, as something along the lines of Lucy promising not to pull the football away at the last second. I won't believe it's happening until I see trailers. The IMDB page for Ringworld still shows it as "in development." The thing about "doing it right" is just how subjective that is. It's going to be so hard to get Niven's tone right. I once tried and failed to explain why I love Niven's work so much to a friend. "His wit is so specific and his characters are so SMART." That's as far as I got. I doubt I'll be happy with whomever gets cast as Louis Wu unless they're scary smart. And I have the nasty feeling that "doing it "right" means "deep pockets." Like Marvel feature money. And getting the Kzin right? Yikes!

But what actors are tall enough to play the Kzinti, "Speaker-to-Animals"?
This is one of two novels I have always wanted to see done. The first of course was 'Lord Of The Rings.' I truly wish Peter Jackson could have done this as his second homage. I could have done without 'The Hobbit' altogether.
This is my number one most desired to watch show. But I'm not holding my breath - they'll probably shove another superhero movie/series down our throats instead. If it does happen, hopefully it will be for mature audiences and include a reasonable amount of rishing.

I so HOPE, that this will not turn into the STD level shyte show I fear we'll see. But if it does, I'll just reread all my Niven and pretend it never happend. I’m on pins and needles praying this gets made, but if it’s not going to be done right with hundreds of millions, it won’t be good. (Omg, you mentioned Louis and The Lying Bastard! I forgot! ) Gotta read the books again! Thanks for the upload!
Not sure it'll happen or if it does how good the adaptation might be, but... it's great to live in a world where such a thing is possible at last. Amazon did a good job on The Expanse, wish hey would hire those show runners to do this they know how to do modern science fiction right. Apple has done an only so-so job on Foundation, I hope the Amazon guys have a smart and intelligent approach .

Couple that with Akiva Goldsmith being linked and you have a high potential for an utter shitshow.
this could easily go both ways; either be a huge deal, or a massive turkey ( like the rings prequel turned out to be.) three things will be key/determine the outcome. Budget, of course, but more importantly, the writers and the actors. The huge problem with the Rings prequel was a cast of unknowns, you MUST have at least one or two well known ( and well liked ) actors to head up the cast of a fantasy or scifi project or no one will watch it. Writing is, IMHO, the Achilles heel of all scifi films. No matter how much money, effects, action, great direction or wonderful cinematography you throw at a scifi project, if the writing is lame it will be a turkey. And by writing, what I mean is, when you take a book and do a film treatment version, usually a whole lot of stuff falls between the cracks in the name of condensation/ rapid pacing. Another problem with scifi book film rewrites is comprehension; I.E., usually the writers have little to no comprehension of actual science and physics, which is a guaranteed stumbling block. Look at the Jack Reacher series by Amazon...they knocked it out of the park, because Lee Child insisted that the writing would stay grounded and closely connected with the original novels storyline, and that he would have oversight. That's it; the core reason that series is a success. If the writers of Ringworld start pulling the usual hacks, shortcuts, condensations and making stuff up that is the business as usual model, the series will be doomed. This is something that the industry in general and Amazon in particular seems to have a lot of trouble grasping.
