The Spencer predates the 1897, Sir Francis Spencer designed his shotgun in 1882, John Moses Browning designed the 1893 (later the 1897 with improvements) for Winchester much later after the relative commercial flop of the 1887 lever action
Browning's design isn't like modern shotguns at all, the 1893 and 97 shotguns have a single piece of the ammo elevator and feed ramp which also doubles as the surfaces which lock the bolt, it's an ingenious and relatively simple design, but modern guns are more reliable and less susceptible to mud and dirt as there's less exposed mechanisms, most importantly they often use a rotating bolt or vertically sliding locking wedges to secure the bolt in battery, the elevator is actuated by the rear stroke of the pump like the 1897s, but there's separate components alongside it
