Hooray! Someone finally did it! It’s such a close match to Ego brand batteries on every level! Ive opened up a few different aftermarket battery packs for Makita, Ryobi, etc. and I’ve never seen one that was such a close copy of the brand name variety as this. I too have been waiting to see an ego battery clone for a while now, looking foreword to checking prices and saving a ton of money on my next ego tool battery! Thanks for showing us, and for all your very informative videos! Keep up the good work!

No. I am certain. It's from a known battery cloner in China. I mentioned in video that I was interested in the BMS because of that. They most likely copied the microcontroller program from a EGO BMS. I was at least impressed how well they copied the BMS and they did make it work with the D-terminal to tool communication. I was hoping to be able to get spare BMS boards from them but no response still.

Thanks for your comment. It is some comments on here about the power station and it seems they show up as a 2.5ah pack. I assume they copied the program in the EGO 2.5ah pack so it shows up as such. They most likely had to copy the chip to get the D-terminal to work correctly with tools. Should not matter a while lot other wise I would think.

It seems these are not available anymore. I searched everywhere but nowhere they can be found. EGO must have issued a cease and desist order on them. However, if you can directly contact Ruzixt, they can still sell the battery pack separately, i.e., just the welded battery pack with the thermal board and connectors and a separate BMS board. I think there is a big market for both of these two items for DIY'ers. In fact, I've seem refurb'ed EGO BMS boards on sale on eBay.

A good thorough review. The only question I have is if the battery was cycled at least twice? I found that on the first charge, my Ego and Toro batteries seemed to not have full capacity. After a couple cycles they did. No metrics on it. Just my observation. What I'd like to see is devices coming out that can use the Ego batteries. I have three now, from my snow blower and leaf blower. bought a Toro lawn mower as I liked it marginally enough more than the Ego.

    • @ThriftyToolShed
      @ThriftyToolShed  3 года назад +1

If I remember correctly it was the 2nd discharge cycle that I tested the pack capacity. I have never seen with lithium any reason to "break them in" sort of before a capacity test. On the other hand I have no metrics on that either! I have been making other uses for my packs at the moment as well. They are a great platform to use on a variety of applications. Alot of people comment about using them for ebikes. They are also easy enough to use with older tools etc. that will still run off of 120VDC as well as 120VAC. I also made a make shift vacuum and I am currently working on my own lawn mower, but not enough time and money lately to finish it. Thanks for your comment!

@@ThriftyToolShed ; Are you thinking about doing repair service? I suspect the need for this is going to increase in the coming years but we need "Right to Repair" legislation! If EGO isn't going to offer repair service to keep these out of the landfills then we should be able to fix them ourselves or third party. But, if we do get legislation then companies could end up doing what Apple is doing and making it so you must have the repair parts paired to the device. I would love to get to that level before retiring one day. At the least I do wish to see (in this transition to more battery powered devices) that we have as you stated the right to repair. Stop making it so hard to repair. Share schematics, inormation and mass produce parts. It is time to realize even at some level of danger we have to be careful and repair some things ourself. No different really than the shade tree mechanic, you must respect gas and hot radiators the same as we must respect lithium cells, sometimes high voltage and moving parts. Hopefully if enough people push and learn we will still even with electric cars etc. be able to fix our own that we Own!

I want to say this may be the wrong video for my question but since the board is labeled so well I figured I would ask here. My bms started blinking green then blanked out with no lights at all. ( q12 looks to be shorted (Just opposite the way yours was) I also noticed what is labeled d9 on this board wasn't attached on one side, maybe this caused the board to stop working if it got knocked loose when I removed the potting. while trying to repair it I lost it, do you happen to know what this part is called So I can replace it? I looked over one of my Gen2 boards and the D9 is a diode marked as "WM" it's the only diode on the board with that marking I believe. It has the cathode or line towards the right side (or away from the transistor). Hope it helps some as I have not had to replace one of those to say for sure what all it does. As far as Q12 if shorted it will blink green constantly and pull all cells to zero volts if you don't disconnect the board from the cells. I feel like you did pick a great spot welder. Hope you enjoy it as I have mine. Thanks for your kind comment!

@@MrPageyjim - the automatic discharge is to prolong the life expectancy of the battery.
If you have a power outage once a year, have a set of batteries, but do not use them regularly… just rotate them on/off the charger every few months. If one is discharged, the one most recently placed on the charger will be full. Use a phone app for a regular scheduled meeting with your battery charger in your garage! :-)
I use my batteries nearly every week, so my batteries are charged all the time, but as they get older, the duration of holding charge decreases. My 5 year old batteries work, but don’t perform like a brand new battery.

I have a 5ah genuine battery that got wet during use. I took it apart to make sure it dried up properly, but when I pulled it apart, four of the small colored wires came out of the white socket. I checked this video to try and work out where the colored wires go (all the other wiring seemed to be the same), and put them back in. When I inserted them with some small pliers, I saw a couple of small sparks, which was concerning. But I screwed the battery back together, pressed the big button on top, and it showed almost full charge, so I thought everything was probably ok.
However, this morning I noticed the button was red (for at least 10 seconds), and the top of the battery pack was warm. I waited half an hour, the battery pack cooled down again, with a green light showing.
Do you have any idea what could be happening? Did I create a short circuit and ruin the battery? Do you think it’s safe to use? Would really appreciate your thoughts! Thanks

I think the sparks you saw when inserting the connector is normal. It’s definitely wise to keep an eye on a pack that is warming up unexpectedly though. The bms is pretty picky so IMO you should be safe as long as the light is green.

That is interesting, it did not show that back when I ordeded it. I wonder now if they figured that out later themselves? Must be true though if they noticed it and updated that Information. I am certain it showed compatibility with all EGO 56V products when I bought mine many listings ago. I was hoping to get some spare BMS boards from them, but no luck yet. I wish they would sell them, especially if they get it totally compatible. Thanks for bringing up this issue, I did not realize they found that issue! I don't have the power station to test but I want to get one, I am waiting for the next generation hopefully. I am bad about buying one right before they come out with a improved and updated version. Lol.

@@ThriftyToolShed They are coming out with the solar charging accessory in the spring, so maybe they will release a new power station too....though I dont think they are actually working on a second that I know of. At least not to be released soon.

That is what I have heard as well. If anything like the blowers and mowers, they will change it soon though, I am betting. It has so much room for improvement. It's bad when dewalt station out performs it with 20V batteries. They need to step that up for the price in my opinion.

Great video ! If you do get info on the BMS board ability from this mfg I would appreciate that when you get it. Just a thought and not sure if it would be cost-effective there are many but EasyEDA is a great free program for individuals to create and source a finished circuit board at a reasonable price.

I doubt they will ever be willing to sell individually honestly. The chance that they might show up on eBay or Ali express is exactly why I would not personally put effort into the latter idea. If you take time to reverse engineer and pay the custom assembly fees you would have to buy a huge quantity to make them profitable. Then if the aftermarket design we already see did come out for sale they would probably be able to sell for half price. Then you get stuck with all of them and at a huge cost....
Not really worth the risk to me when I can repair a few and have plenty of batteries, it is definitely a thought I had for sure though!
