Regarding cotton, when people use the term "Japanese selvedge denim", they are referring to denim fabric that is manufactured in Japan. However, it is important to note that the cotton used to make this fabric can come from anywhere in the world. In fact, 99.9% of all Japanese denim, whether selvedge or not, is made from cotton sourced from various places such as the USA, Africa, Australia, South America, the Middle East, and China. It's worth noting that different cotton varieties, similar to different coffee varieties, offer varying levels of quality and characteristics. For instance, extra-long staple cotton like the American-grown Supima produces a softer and stronger denim fabric, whereas a short staple cotton will produce a rougher, grittier feel. Additionally, the texture of the fabric can also be affected by the way the cotton is spun.
Lastly, because you mentioned that you weren’t sure if all our fabric were Japanese or not. All of our denim comes from Japan and we offer both selvedge and non selvedge options. Even all of our shirting is made using Japanese fabrics.

I'd caution people about buying more than 3-4 pairs of selvedge denim per year. It takes some wears to get them comfortably broken in and a lot longer to get those fades. It's a lot less fun if you're constantly breaking in new pairs and not seeing any fades.
Also, wash your jeans when they get dirty. You don't need to wash them weekly or even monthly necessarily, but don't avoid washing them if they stink. Just turn em inside out, wash em with relatively gentle detergent, and hang dry. It won't ruin the jeans, they can take it lol

This is a great list! As a long-time fan of N&F, Raleigh Denim, and PBJ, I learned a lot of new brands on this video. I would just add that “straight fit” often can be the looser fit that folks want these days. I’d love to see a video on Japanese Sashiko selvedge, that’s what I’ve loved the most over the years, although hard to find.

TCB using Zimbabwean cotton is a good thing. It’s still Japanese selvedge denim it’s just Zimbabwean cotton is longer staple so it’s stronger and softer. Momotaro uses the same because Japanese cotton was tried at one point and was insanely expensive and due to the soil really short staple so it led to less durable harder jeans that faded quickly but otherwise were inferior in every other way.

  • @leog4314

Tcb is great I own three pairs, they’re a heritage brand so they mostly focus on replicating old denim from Levi’s to lee, so they’re definitely more known for their wider silhouettes if you wanna try a pair I recommend the 50s or 30s for a wider leg

Uniqlo makes selvage denim for dirt cheap. I'm talking the same price as regular levis and sometimes cheaper if there's a sale. The fabrics are made by a japanese fabric mill, kaihara, as well. They make straighter and tapered cuts. From a pricing standpoint, it's the ideal starting place.

I haven't tried them personally(this will change soon), but I've heard good things about those jeans. They're normally 305 euros but they often host summer/winter sales which cut that price in half, which is something I'll definitely jump on. No gate keeping here. Everyone is welcome to the selvedge denim community. Tate & Yoko is actually N&Fs flagship store in Canada so that’s why they carry a lot of N&F but also other brands too. When it comes to entry level selvage denim I actually think that the Uniqlo U selvedge denim is a solid pair of denim for those who want to spend only 60 dollars to see if they are into selvedge denim. Another budget brand is “Unbranded” which is actually a sister brand to N&F so they have similar cuts but a lot more normal fabrics and no branding of course. I am also very biased and love N&F too because they have such interesting and cool fabrics as well as a very reasonable price, I even watch their weekly live streams to see upcoming models. Oh and another awesome store to buy all kinds of selvedge denim on sale is Blueowl, they carry a lot of awesome selvedge denim brands and have seasonal sales, including for N&F. Happy shopping !

I received my first pair of selvedge denim jeans today. I chose the Naked & Famous Weird Guy Left Hand Twill and ordered them from Amazon. They fit almost perfect. The length is perfect with just enough for me to cuff them about 1 inch and still have them drape my shoes. The waist is a tiny bit big, but I went into this not really knowing how these would jeans fit. I measured the waist on a pair of my Levi's then ordered a corresponding size from N&F (FYI tag size 36 waist in Levis so I ordered Tag size 34 in N&F). The only thing that makes these jeans almost fit perfect and not fit perfect is the upper thighs are a little tighter then I like but not uncomfortable, I just have to get used to it. Overall, I am extremely happy with my purchase. I also purchased a pair of Unbranded Ub201s in the same size as the N&F jeans. I receive those jeans sometime next week.

It’s funny how the younger generation gravitates towards wider fits. In the 90s, I had a short, stubby stature and I was buying JNCO jeans, size 36 when I was a true 30 at the time! And XL, sometimes XXL t-shirts lol At my age, especially after trimming down to a healthier weight, I do prefer a closer slim fit. Which can be annoying when most retailers these days are all about that “oversized” trend. I remember a time shopping at Zara or H&M and I could barely fit a medium shirt. Nowadays, even an X-Small fits like a Large! Smh…But I can’t be mad. It’s the 20-year re-cycle (not ‘recycle’!) of trends that continues to shine thru over the years. I’m happy the younger generations dig what I digged back then. You can thank us young GenX/older Millenials for your influence in fashion 😉 Oh, and I won’t lie…I’ve recently bought some of that stuff for nostalgic sake. Just only slightly oversized this time!

I am new to raw denim but I have some thoughts. I do have naked and famous left hand twill and they're great. I highly recommend. Most selvage denim I believe is Japanese, especially after cone mills shut down, but I don't think a lot of cotton is grown in Japan. And Naked and Famous jeans are usually made in Canada (except for their made in Japan line). So Canadian jeans made with Japanese selvage denim.

Gen Z only likes wider jeans bc they've just entered their fashion identity and wider jeans are trendy at the moment. trend forecasters say slim jeans are coming back, and so gen z will adopt them as well

not selvedge denim, but I vouch for No Faith Studios. The first pair of denim pants I've owned that have darts to shape the silhouette and the fabric is soft, but keeps that weight.
Be warned: they're very pricey and also fit super long if you're short

Problem with most selvedge denim brands, is that the sizing stops around a 38” - across the whole fashion industry, the big guys often get left out. I wear Naked and Famous as I can get a 42” waist. There is almost this impression that big guys don’t care. It is the case from standard jeans as well as even if they do the waist size, they don’t increase the back rise which means you show the ass crack which nobody wants.
