- It has been hard to do anything lately due to a tragedy in my personal life, but I did finally manage to finish this video that I have been working on for aaaages!!
In other news, I think I have figured out why my welding has been so poor in recent videos.
Also, there are going to be some big changes in my life with my cars very soon. 🤔

Someone told me "You don't have to be brilliant at welding but you got to be a brilliant at grinding"
I hope everything works out for the better, mate. Life does throw some curve balls from the to time. Take care of yourself, Marcus & keep on track. None of us are going anywhere 😊 Cheers. Leigh.
Thank you Marcus and Cat for all your videos over the past year. Wishing you both a very Happy New Year!👍😎
You are a transparent person. With your channel but your private life is your business Marcus stay strong 💪 man .
Don't give up Marcus hope your new year is better than the last, take care man good luck 👍
Best of luck Marcus & thanks for all the great content.
Hope you're ok mate, stay strong! 💪👍
I use a generator for welding, also. The only advantage to mains is immediate power. The first second of a weld from the generator is waiting for power to ramp up to full.
Also, if you can get an argon/co2 mix, it should also help.
If you do paint the arches, it can look good with a black piping detail between the wing and the arch.
What generator do you use for welding , where my car is I don’t have access to mains .
@@frankowl8692 I use a Champion 11kW unit. I do some 3/8” material, so need the 30amp, 240 volt for that. If you’re doing thinner material, I’ve also got a 9kW that works well for that on the 20 amp, 110 circuit. It’s better to have a bit more capacity than you really need, that way the ramp up to full power is shorter, and makes for a better weld.
I use a MillerMatic 211. Plugs into either 110, or 240. Also, these are nice units as once your wire size is determined, you just adjust your dial for material thickness. Takes all the guesswork out of welder settings. I then use a mix gas for all my welding.
@ I’m looking for one to do allowed me to weld on panels to my mk2 fiesta tbh . My old one wasn’t up to the job apart from with power tools think it was only 5.5kw though
@@frankowl8692 the trick is to find the maximum power consumption of your welder and try and get a generator that’s 10% bigger at minimum. Preferably true sine wave
@ thank you I appreciate the info , gives me something to do tonight having a look at different ones
Hope you sort things out marcus keep up the good content all the best for the new year mate
Well done on the car progress mate! We have also all been enjoying the MH News videos 👍.
Keep your chin up. We are all here to support you with whatever happens on the channel or in your personal life!
Also, that model engine is pukka!👌😂
Thanks so much for your support mate! 👍👍👍
@marcushayesford your most welcome m8 it's good to talk helps so much stay strong m8
The only thing that I would say is try and get the bigger yellow hobby gas bottle. they are able to deliver more volume of shielding gas. making the weld more controllable I did uses buy the small gray gas bottles are not cheap
Interesting video mate, I hope you get through whatever you are dealing with. Happy New Year.
Hi mate everyone goes through struggles in life that's the way it is you keep strong and look after yourself the video's are great to watch and I'm enjoying my petrolhead style clothing that my daughter got me for Xmas will be getting some more in the new year all the best you will get sorted just take your time...Mike skegness
All the best and keep chipping away at it cheers
Hope your personal life getting better sure you working everything out 👍💪
Happy Christmas and new year one heat and wire speed on ur mig
Well done Marcus! Happy new year.
Happy new year Marcus. Hope everything pans out for you.
stay strong legend from nz
Ayy up Marcus and Cat,Wishing you A Happy New Year to you 2 and your Family’s.here’s to 2025’s new content
Hope your well mukka !
Glad to see you back at it .
Pure argon wont do you any favours.
Mig gas is argon/c02 mix with a small percentage of 02 (this gives it a hotter burn )
Next time you come to mine bring your welder so i can have a play .
Say hi to Cat for me ,and i hope you and the family is all good.
Leigh
@@LeighBooth-l7i All good brother!! Hope you lot had a good Christmas. I can bring the welder next time I’m up. 👍
15% Argon is really efficient on car body, no need for anything more. It's easy to forget we deal with old metal that had good content and the rubbish we buy today to make plates from. The other thing we now have to get used to is no more transformer welders being sold, all Inverter rubbish from now on.
Weld the back doors shut fill them over and then you can tub it and fit forest arches and a one piece poly window many escort 4 door cars were rallied like this back in the day
Marcus Haynes, hope you have a happy New Year. Hope to see you in the future. Keep up with what you’re doing beige escort. 😅😅😅😅😅
Right nob would be amps
Check by turning left nob all way down. Pull triger and watch wire coming out while you turn nob up, you will notice difference
Also if that welder has a low duty cycle you could have as little as 3 mins weld time at 150 amps before you need to let the thing cool down
As they say here in Wigan, "keep gooin wit yed down"
A bit more amperage and practice and you'll be all good.
Nice vid.
There are alot of us out there I've got a BA falcon 03
i would go higher on left as well saw you go it to 24 try it all but flat out on the left and add wire for the axle ---pure argon is for tig it needs the co2 in the argon for mig argon 5 is good for cars
Thanks for the advice mate! 👍 The left nob was all the way up (apart from when I mentioned I turned it down a bit) The left number does vary when you adjust the right nob tho. 👍
Hi Marcus 100% argon will make the weld sit proud it’s an absolute no no for mild steel Mig, you need 100% CO2 or argo co2 light mix, 0.6 wire will also help alot, your not going to improve without the the basics sorted first, hope that helped
Great vid Marcus, on Heidi arches, I'd advise buy another set for the extension parts and best id say, apply a thin skim of filler and colour code them, or, chose a colour that would suit to do the splitter aswell, I reckon it'd look smart with a alu sheet front lip splitter aswell, I think I myself would fabricate side skirts to meet the arches down the sides and suiting curvature to match the front splitter, and, I would say, if the original car colour is hearing aid beige, maybe worth keeping, but I'll be honest, I've done some pretty far out bike resprays with rattle cans and the choice of colours you get and additional flake you can buy to concoct your personalised version, have a look at specialist paints website, they did the paint for Pimp My Ride, I use their flake and base pearls some times, silver hook paints have good shades, very thin paint comes out very thin and runs easy unless your gentle with your coats, but with specialist paints flakes and pearls on top with a professional clear coat, you could get a proper custom style paint finish and it'd be your own choice and concoction that only you know the layer mechanism
I only use the mig to weld thin sheet (2mm max ) anything else I go back to the stick welder and yes for the mig I nearly always use max power and high wire speed to achieve decent penetration I use c02 but purist tell me to use argon c02 mix .
As a purist, I say you should be using argon because it gives the best results. CO2 can still hold a little moisture where as argon can't. Argon CO2 mix is just cheaper but gives better results over time than just CO2 on its own, yes CO2 is fine to use but not for where the weld is loaded and unloaded regularly as it'll fatigue and snap. It's all about the weld rusting from the inside out..
On the welding looks like you need more amps and less wire feed
I’m sure your not to far away so can always link up if you want?
Don't pay so much attention to the side you weld to, turn it over and look at the back and if you can see it on the other side of the metal you're in the right zone. Penetration is important. The weld can be completely flush, so long as you penetrate to the back it's half way good. The best way to know is the break test and the acid test. Break test is cut the weld only half way through then smack it with a hammer to snap it. The grain where it snaps should be completely random and jagged sharp peaks. The acid test is to cut a small piece of the weld off where it joins the original metal and drop a drop of dilute hydrochloric acid on the join between the original metal and the added metal. It will change to grey or black. If the colour is the same across the join it's good. The bigger the difference the worse quality the weld is.
The higher you had the right knob the better the penetration is so go with that. Obviously turn it down with thinner metal.. You're doing really good and you should practice more. Go get a few small pieces of offcuts or something from a fabrication shop or a garage and PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE! Honestly for learning from yt comments you're doing great so keep at it!
Hi Marcus, can you send me the link for your channel that you were playing Edd Sheeran music. Iv been feeling depressed, and i think a good laugh at you trying to play Edd Sheeran might cheer me up...
The generator will be fine for thinner metal like car bodywork, but not for welding RSJ metal beams ect...
Thanks for the advice mate! 👍
@marcushayesford I've just finished all the welding on my mk1 Cortina using a generator for welding and cordless grinders and drills with multiple spare batteries. Like you, I'm ready for paint, that ain't gonna be cheap.
@@brianclaridge7695 Yes decent paintwork isn’t cheap at all!! Realistically I’ll never be in a position to afford a paint job. I’m lucky I have people that are willing to help me out with that sort of thing, but I may end up painting ‘Heidi’ with rattle cans anyway. It has been a nightmare owning a car that has been painted to a high standard (my Mk1) I’m grateful that she now has a few marks so that I don’t feel guilty driving her hard. If the prices weren’t so low I’d sell her to be honest, but that’s another story. 👍
What generator is that ? Looking for one to power my welder
@13.34.
Weld speed wire , thickness of wire for plate
Heat from the set
Angle of torch
Right to left with MIG
And yes mate using a generator ,
Will, up n lower the power to the welder
I'll be able to hear a MIG , crackling good wen ur settings are right
Remember, heat , wire speed n angle of torch,
Also that weld pool metal , especially it being " tin " plate u gota be super carefull .......
" tac tac tac tac tac " let it cool
Then tac tac tac tac .........like stitches ....see spaced equally apart
Let it cool ...........
Engine maybe worn Marcus because it spends it’s life on the Rev limiter 😂
Hiya Marcus I just thought I’d pop a message over hope things are going ok with you and kat if ever ya need a chat with Simone who will listen and not judge you pls feel free to send me a message hope you ave a lovely new year and that next year will be a lot better than the last one wishing you all the best for 2025 ❤❤
Practice Practice practice wen ir done practicesing pratice sum more
2 years constant daily practice
Got me 6G pipe coded welder
Something i achieved in life
Hello mate, would u not consider going to the machine shop near Coventry for a lesson in MIG welding ? It looks like u are holding the torch at the wrong angle and u are too close to the work piece. To set the wire length on the torch burn back it should be the length of some snips. Also welding outside with argon cause porosity aero holes in your welds. If u are learning to weld wings arches it’s best to cheat and spot them together. Keep going mate u will get their in 2025 👍
The generator doesn't have a direct to earth and could have ark protection, i.e., bump stops or mounts strange looking welds, nothing I have seen before, only welding more will see improvements
You need to understand how welding gasses work, a gas cylinder needs to stand upright to function properly, (a Forklift cylinder can be different as they expel gas in another way). You'll see them lying down on a forklift sometimes`.
There is a space in any gas bottle above the liquid contents that is required for the liquid to turn to gas, lying the bottle down puts liquid gas into the regulator and therefore into the torch.
Pure Argon on body gauge metal is a terrible idea, it spits and doesn't work as well as pub grade CO2, a 15% argon mix is the best argon mix for bodywork.
Thanks for the advice mate! 👍 I really should make some sort of bracket to hold the gas bottle to the side of the welder.
@@marcushayesfordnot to side of welder !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Sperately away in a metal cage !!!!
@@matthewc.419 Not needed with CO2 blends, a bracket on the welder will be fine.
Take the wing off maude
Maude’s spoiler is moulded into her Bootlid (they are fibreglass) but she’ll be stripped for parts soon anyway. I might not actually drive her again. 👍
@marcushayesford can't wait for Heidi to be done I ment the front wings
Whats up with maude@@marcushayesford
@@edwardalannewton8591 Oh I see. Maude’s wings were never prepped properly either because they were just painted with a roller. Once I strip Maude apart I’ll keep her wings as spares tho. If Heidi is set to be a drift toy I’m sure she’s going to get a few battle scars! 🤪
@@connorjames6307 She’s junk mate! 😀

Have they spilt ?.
