    If they threw some liners in this and a compression lock this would have potential to out shine the pm2.

    • @SliceyDicey
      @SliceyDicey  5 лет назад +8

      Really can't see why it would need liners. The back lock is a lot of metal. Cold Steel doesn't use liners on the Triad lock knives very often either.

    • @jfnurod
      @jfnurod 5 лет назад +3

      @@SliceyDicey Agree. Feel liners are only neccessary with compression lock. I haven't got my hands on the para3 light weight to see how they designed it

    I'm a Native fan but was really on the fence about this one until you did the comparison against the PM2. Changed my perspective greatly and pushed me a little closer to the "yay" camp.

    One of Spyderco's very best looking folders, IMO. This is more knife than I have a use for -- my Endura V-Toku2 and a couple of slick TwoSuns have my own big folder needs covered -- but Eric might have me with a lightweight, 3.5" blade length iteration of this design!

    Impressive turnaround on the time from purchase to review. Side note: your blade show videos were great! Anyone can film a knife booth, but it was cool to see/hear you talk about your interaction with others in the knife community.

    You should at least borrow a cold steel broken skull for a comparison. Yeah it has black blade and a dumb name, but it is the easiest to carry four inch blade folder there is, 3.1 oz. and .30 inch thick grip. Another competitor would be the manly peak, 3.7 inch blade, 4 oz., S90V, $117.

    • @frederickj.7136
      @frederickj.7136 5 лет назад +1

      It's pleasing, for sure, if the useable blade length suits. The Salt version is a step up in fit 'n' finish and feel in hand quality compared to the previously produced lightweight model, irrespective of the LC200N blade alloy and fitments upgrade... coming at the cost of a strangely higher friction deployment. Be aware, Native 5's are not too accommodating to Spydieflick opening methods. I own both Salt and S35VN models.

      @ Spike... Bruce, you are more than welcome. FYI, I have had very good luck myself finding what are 'as-good-as-they-ever-get' individual examples of popular Spyderco models on auction at eBay. Mine all came as "new, unused" 'safe queens', as the expression goes; and a number appear to have been cherry picked (or just lucky scores), which is why they were kept around in reserve like that for some time (years) by Spyderco enthusiast / collectors. Production knives do vary, even among pricier models; and the difference can certainly matter, as far as I'm concerned.
      Or find a solid, smaller, proprietorship kind of dealer and establish a relationship. For any Native 5, I can heartily recommend Rob at National Knives, LLC for a number of reasons; but particularly here, because the Native 5 is a personal favorite Spyderco model of his, which he knows and understands well, indeed. My S35VN Native 5 came from eBay, as described; and my Salt version came from Rob. Good luck!

      Besides checking eBay for bargain buys, also keep an eye out for Amazon's warehouse deals. I got my 2018 Native 5 a few months ago at a 25% discount simply because the box was crushed. And then they gave me another 33% discount on the sale price because they'd advertised it as the regular S35VN version whereas the 2018 version has S30V bladesteel, which is good enough for me at half price😁

  • @ryewaldman2214
    @ryewaldman2214 5 лет назад

    I disagree on your assessment of the blade length compared to the pm2, you lined up the pivots, which makes the blade tip stick out a bit more the the pm2, but given the differences in the location of the finger choil, there really isn't as much difference in the length of the cutting edge. Yes, it has a bit more, but rather than the half-square length difference that appears in your review, it is much closer to only a 1/4 square difference (is that a 1" square grid?). in fact, when you closed them and lined them up for the closed length comparison, the length difference is just about a 1/4 square difference.
    I think if you aligned the beginning of the sharped edges, you will find that the slight extra blade length difference in the native chief is just about explained entirely by the extra length when closed.
    I have no dog in this fight. I just felt that the blade length comparison was done too quickly and inaccurately that it might mislead some folks.
    I do agree that you get a lot of blade in a nice skinny carry package. Thanks for showing us these knives!
    One question I have for you is, for your money, would you take this or the Hogue doug ritter? they are basically the same price point.

    • @SliceyDicey
      @SliceyDicey  5 лет назад

      I have them both in front of me. The Chief is an easy half inch longer. The Ritter and this don't really compare much. The blade on the Chief is much longer. Price is sort of the only place they're similar.

      Slicey Dicey, you're misunderstanding what they're asking, LTK dropped a bomb yesterday with their testings conclusion, that m390 is a bogus steel and should be avoided in production knives. This guy's asking what you make of this conclusion. Knives using m390 are going to take a hit to their reputation from this.
