It’s really difficult but in a way it could also be a beginners game since the base concept is so simple and while there are secrets it’s not huge in depth ones like Noita. Progression towards unlocking new characters is easy to understand as well for the most part
@@zaknafein254it's not that punishing though, each level is very short and a run without looping is at most 15 minutes. while you may die a lot you don't actually lose that much each time and it's easy to start another run with the knowledge of avoiding whatever situation killed you last time in mind. enemies are simple, guns aren't that complex, levels aren't complex, the mutations are self explanatory and almost all are useful in most situations you are in the only punishing thing is that you die in about 3 or 4 consecutive hits, but healing options are rather plentiful so its not like getting down to 2 hp is a death sentence for your run plus like I said before if you get killed and you've clicked retry before you even realized you died lol. it is pretty good at distilling the essence of what roguelites are and can pretty quickly get someone up to speed on the tropes of games in the genre so I'd say it does an excellent job at being an entry point
I'm surprised tboi isn't here, it's a classic, I started my roguelike journey off playing it (also considering most roguelike nowadays fall more to the roguelite side, lots of meta progression available/people don't actually get to enjoy traditional roguelikes that are slightly somewhat more challenging but also fun/rewarding once you learn to improve)
Since there is no Shoot 'em up category, I will mention The Void Rain Upon Her Heart, a Shoot 'em up boss rush roguelike where you bring love to monster. It's still early access but it's nearing version 1.0 . The game have various difficulty levels and mode and the meta progression currency mostly unlock knowledge on the various monsters and items you come upon. It's surprisingly wholesome and yet the final boss tracks go hard. XD Also have Revita Heart as an item. :P
i'd actually recommend cogmind over qud as a good traditional roguelike to start with, its a lot more accessible than most of its peers with full mouse support and good tutorials, and is a good way of easing someone into the style of play present in these games without overwhelming them too much (something traditional roguelikes tend to suffer with)
Roboquest is another game you should definitely check out for the FPS section, it's very similar to Gunfire Reborn but with much faster gameplay and movement
Its gungeon or slay the spire for me, both are excellent introductions into the roguelike genres but with different paces and styles of play. Monster Train is also great, and I thought Returnal was a fun take on roguelikes and shooters.
If you want something as close as possible to the original rogue (turn based dungeon explorer) I suggest shattered pixel dungeon. Its free and goes quite in depth, while having good balance and being a bit less whacky than things like Pathos nethack.
My favorite rogulelike that I’ve tried has been wizard of legend by far, but I haven’t played many beyond that. Any roguelikes you’d recommend that are similar to it?
I love turn based tactical games and I love roguelike so I thought Into the Breach would be perfect for me.. idk why but I just couldn't get into it.. maybe it felt kind of dry in terms of atmosphere, I didn't feel there were enough interesting decisions outside of the combat (surprises, customization, combos, etc.), and then I think there were just sooo many tactical options to consider that I felt kind of burned out in the battles.. way too puzzly I guess. If you like super puzzly it might be for you though.
For begginer friendliness, wouldn't Roboquest fit better? Gunfire has been out longer and is a more robust experience, in Roboquest you have to worry about very little as you start out.
Both are good options in my opinion. The reason I decided to pick Gunfire was because I find Roboquest’s gameplay much faster in general. And once you’ve unlocked a few gadgets, the controls can become much more complicated than a traditional FPS. But both are good ones to start with.

Nuclear throne is definitely not a beginner game.

@@phiphi2209A good beginner's game is something that can ease people into the genre; nuclear throne is a bit too punishing for newbies

You are like the wikipedia of roguelike/lite games haha good video !!
This is really well done. I can tell the passion you have for the genre, it's inspiring. Thank you for the effort you put in here.

Which ROGUELIKE To NOT Start With : DARKEST DUNGEON ;D
"These nightmarish creatures can be felled, they can be beaten!"
This was excellent! Agreed with the wikipedia comment!

So high effort, as always! Another awesome video! The price tags is a nice touch.

YES! IVE BEEN WAITING FOR A NEW VIDEO!
I think that Death Road to Canada is a great introduction, and also a great roguelite in general
Amazing music too, the main menu music still gets stuck in my head
Thanks for making such great content about our favourite video game genre. I wish all my RUclips videos could be good like this.👍

Great video! tons of games that are new to me here :)
Two good starter FPS-roguelites are Tower of Guns and Ziggurat.
Both are easy to understand, pick up and play titles.
Would love to see a gunfire reborn vs roboquest design comparison
Woo yeah another video to get around to watching three months from now!
imo roboquest is a great rougelike, its what got me into the genre
What is your opinion on Griftlands and Death Roads Tournament ?

I can understand that feeling. I’m sorry it’s didn’t work for you but I’m glad you gave it a shot!
Im curious since you loge rouge games, have you ever played returnal ?!
Amazing video, youve outdone yourselves again peperrheads
Love your vids. I can't place your accent though :P
void bastards is a decent FPS rougelike
8:11 I'm sorry but this just looks like one of those Mobile Gatcha games to me
And yet it very much isn’t 😎

Lmao imagine some poor bastards intro to the genre is smth like noita, bet they'd never touch this side of gamine ever again
