  • Dr. Peter Weller is a Clinical Psychologist whose current work is dedicated to training clinical psychologists and also to engaging men in exploring their concerns and partnering with women to achieve gender equality and social justice. The history of gender conversations in the Caribbean has primarily been one of women talking to women, and when men are involved they often perceive the process as preaching or punishment. Gender is too often understood to be a "woman thing". COURAGE is required to change this conversation. Dr. Weller is the President of The Caribbean Male Action Network - CariMAN.
In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

it would have been great if this video was edited in a way that enabled viewers to see better the slides that the speaker was using. I kept trying in vain to see the power point graphics. instead of focusing on the back of Dr. Weller's head the camera should have been zooming in on the images on the slide. But this is an iimportant conversation. Good job CariMAN

Great presentation! Big respect Peter for stepping out on a global stage & adding your voice to promote the change we badly need... Excellent point on need for partnering with women and all organisations aimed at engaging men to advance gender equality/ social justice and prevent gender-based violence to collaborate. I think its time we move from one-off projects to programs, from isolated impact to collective impact. 'Big Up' to CariMAN and all my brothers and sisters who are working together.

Nice work Peter, the conversation needs to continue. I appreciate the paradigm shift, as you say it takes courage for men to do this. I like it that you honour women for the work already done in this field - it is important that we recognise that this needs to be a mutual process not one that keeps the focus on how women need to change or how they can 'help' men but looking at how we can work together and appreciate the change in each other...... keep up the good work.....

I can see how your personal history/origin may preclude you, but as an Afro-Caribbean man, I also understand, empathize and support Peter Weller's use of the term 'recovering patriarch'. It's a valid description for men like us who can acknowledge that we're born into and exist in a patriarchy, and have even benefited from it, but want to challenge it as we seek social justice and gender harmony

It is so necessary to acknowledge that men can be and frequently are vulnerable and that so many of the behaviours that we witness and dislike stem from their vulnerability. As difficult as it is for men to identify and admit their vulnerability it is equally hard for women to see it, believe it and respond appropriately. So this is an essential discussion for all.

I agree that the video should be edited if possible so the slides are visible during the presentation, my suggestion to the organizers/TEDx Talks is to perhaps place a box in a corner showing the slides as the video runs.

Good presentation Peter, our psychologists and social scientists need to be more engaged activist's and change agents, if we are to redefine development in the region.

This was 8 years ago. I wonder: Is Dr. Weller STILL feeling as the "token man", asking "Where are all the men?" in the "gender equality" committees? Do the women in these committees still answer "They would mash up things!"?

Good work Doctor. One suggestion is that we take the work to the men in gender spaces which already exist for men. Secondly we create new gender spaces for men so that thee efforts would not go unaware by the target group. AruwakEM you are so funny but the man is from the Caribbean you don't expect him to speak with an English accent...LOL

I'm not sure either why some comments have been removed or listed as spam. The comments I made are the ones that appeared and the ones to which you replied. Please forgive me if my comments cause offense. I'm also sure Peter wasn't aiming to insult or accuse you. The conceptual trap I refer to is the ingrained cultural beliefs about male superiority and female inferiority that are overtly and subtly promoted by our society and reinforced by some interpretations of religious teachings.

...nor was I born a patriarch, and so to characterize men as "recovering patriarchs" is accusatory and insulting. And what do you mean by "honest", I agree that that he was speaking honestly of his own opinion and thoughts and from his own experience, so I'm not sure where "honesty" plays into this unless you're using some different meaning of the word.

I'm not sure why one comment was removed and one is listed as spam...anyway, I feel it is hypocritical to say an individual feels unfairly treated, and then follow up with something that falls into that exact line of thought. I imagine he himself does not feel preached to or talked down to. What is a "conceptual trap"? Finally, (and where I imagine we'll disagree the most),I do not claim to know that much about Caribbean culture as it's not my home, however I was not born into a patriarchy...

Probably some cranky individual marking them as such, that seems to be the answer to comments people disagree with (even when a convenient voting system is attached). Anyway, No problem, I doubt you or the speaker mean offense, and I'm sure I have and will offend others in my life unintentionally, that's just how life goes. I can definitely agree in regards to religious cultures, or at least Christianity, which I was raised. I would argue that in other aspects the North American culture...

  • @ThoseSketchyKids
    @ThoseSketchyKids 11 лет назад

...(since it's the only one I can really speak for) presents competing ideas of both male and female superiority and inferiority. For all I know, Caribbean culture is patriarchal, I have no experience to speak of. I will say though, if there is a system of inequality, I would assume individuals benefiting from it would resist acknowledging it, so addressing them as, in this case, "recovering patriarchs" would probably put them off even if they agree with the argument.

AruwakEM,your insensitive and offensive comment is not an 'lol' matter! The man spoke perfect Standard English [with a Jamaican accent] so what???
Is that all you can take away? Pitiful!

  • @ThoseSketchyKids

I like the idea that people need to engage those they disagree with. On the other hand I think it's hypocritical to talk about men feeling preached or talked down to or punished, and then use a phrase like "recovering patriarch."

Mr. Ganness your ideas need more analysis. Perhaps some knowledge about what is feminism and what forms the framework for feminist theories would give structure to your argument, which ironically raises many feminist issues; for example, prostrate cancer awareness, male and female mutilation, economic structures that "privileges" men to their own detriment, or the institutions that would add to that masculine burden by keeping women subordinated in the public and work spaces. Why are men doing hard, dirty dangerous jobs? Why aren't women qualified to be managers and CEO's? Also, the scope of your ignorance extends into the clinical field. Do you think clinical psychologist spend years of expensive studying to arrive at the trivial conversations with clients, that you imagine? Regrettably your post seems to be more of an emotional rant from someone who is frustrated rather than an academic discursive.
