Toyota killed Toyota's future in America by getting rid of the V6 in the Tacoma and 4 Runner and getting rid of the V8 in the Sequoia and Tundra! And I've owned 9 Toyotas since 2004....
Sometimes I need to take a break from Mr. Kilmer's videos, unfortunately. The Toyota Sienna is only offered in AWD, as a hybrid, & with a CVT. We all know that if ANY OTHER manufacturer made a vehicle like that, he'd have nothing but negative things to say about those things alone. Regarding the Sienna, it has a CVT with AWD on a rather heavy vehicle. I'm unsure if that's much of a winning combination long term. I personally own a 2019 Honda Odyssey EX-L nearing 100,000 miles, and during the buying process I test drove a Sienna. To confirm what others say, it's extremely sluggish. Now that wasn't the only deal breaker, but when loaded enough with the whole family and luggage (including a roof box full of things) to make it squat a little, the Odyssey provides superior agility on the highway for passing and acceleration. To each their own I guess, dropping $1500 to change the timing belt and water pump every 100,000 miles shouldn't be considered a deal breaker especially knowing that the 3.5L engine is in the Odyssey, Pilot, Passport, & Ridgeline, it's a very solid engine to say the least. My biggest question though is if the transmission was serviced properly and if the previous owners towed with it. Several of Mr. Kilmer's videos say to NOT flush the transmission, but merely do a fluid exchange.
@@jamesdelap4085 Yes, thanks for that. And also, per my original comment, far less other features and components that can fail. Why then do so many Honda engines with GDI and VCM make it over 300k?
Yep down the tubes with NISSAN. Why would Honda join with a corrupt company with multiple class action suits paid out and still use the same sorry transmissions that cost them hundreds of millions and consumers even more???

People who claim that the odyssey transmissions are junk are the same people that floor their gas pedal from a green light and don’t let the acceleration come gradually. They can’t just be excessive on the gas pedal all the time.
Mine is nearly dead at 216k , still shifts but torque converter is saying good bye. Many sienna transmissions die at 200ish k Scotty thinks siennas are infallible 😂
I’m a 23 yr master Toyota tech and my wife loves Honda vans. We have owned 2 odyssey’s and I will say both were a let down. The 13 had piston ring failure and the 15 broke a transmission and has stuck oil rings on number 3. Both vehicles had excellent maintenance I can’t stand Hondas. No comparison to sienna
I’ve had good luck with the 2005 and 2019 Honda odyssey’s I’ve bought new. We did rent a 2023 Toyota sienna hybrid and I was impressed with its acceleration and gas mileage of 35mpg.

For a long time, my mom drove an '04 Odyssey. The heat never worked right in it, and even though we took it to get looked at several times, the dealer would say they did what they could. It was an alright car, though she wound up trading it in for a '22 CR-V a couple years ago. Don't remember what the mileage was with the trade-in, but it wasn't our favorite car overall.
I have an 04 solara with a Timing Belt. It has 181,000 just replaced the belt it was 10 years old too. Fun price $1200 along with kit that contains other parts that wear eventually
Scotty, Maybe you should do more reseasrch on the 2014 Honda Odyssey before you actually make a video on it since you are incorrect about multiple things that you express and point out in your video. As a honda tech for more than 20 years, the "LDW" Lane departure warning system will only operate at speeds of 40MPH to 90MPH. Anyone watching this video can see that when you tell your viewers that the system is not working now you are actually only going about 35MPH which can be seen with what is displayed on the speedometer. Then you say it is working and your viewers will see that you are now over 40MPH which the system will then be Active. Again, like many other videos you say how bad the transmissions are on these vehicles. You are correct that Hondas are know for transmission issues on certain models and certain years. The model here, "2014" which I will call 2011-2017 due to basically the same body type(Style) with cosmetic and other small changes from 2011-2017. Transmission wise these years had very good transmissions and I have only seen a few replaced which were mostly due to lack of maintenance where the fluid was never changed properly and the torque converter would deteriorate and clutch debris would throughout causing failure. The problem with these transmissions is they are not serviced soon enough. The Honda DW-1 Transmission Fluid loses its Ant-Slip Properties too soon before Maintenance intervals can be reached therefore causing torque converter slippage resulting in torque converter failure. I would say in over 90% of the cases where there is torque converter shutter that if the fluid was to be flushed completely the condition can be resolved but would recommend to change the fluid every 10 to 15000 miles after to extend the life of the transmission and its components.. If there is excessive amounts of debris in the fluid on the first flush I would say it is too late and then I would recommend a transmission. In over 20 years with Honda I have only seen a few transmissions replaced in 2011-2017 odysseys and I would say no more than 10 torque converters replaced. As for being in one of the highest volume shops with over 200 vehicles a day in our service department I would have to honestly disagree with your assessment in this video.
Changing the fluid every 10-15k (not 50k-100k) miles tells you the transmission is not solidly made. Most owners either do not know that or can’t keep up with such maintenance.
Having to change tranny fluid every 15k M is a clear cut case of a bad transmission or car with transmission problems. That's basically what he's saying, even if you list out the details of it starting with the TC, it is what it is. If someone didn't change fluid for 150k M and the interval is 80k M in the manuals, then yes you'd have a point.
The rubber belts are much cheaper to replace compared to the timing chain. So to compare a big engine like Honda's 3,5L. V6 and yes that is a big engine as the overwhelming majority of drivetrains in Europe are little 4 cylinders. So changing a belt on an engine as big as that would be something close to 3,5 times cheaper compared to changing a timing chain. In eastern Europe we hold the the timing belt in high regard and view the direct injection system as an enemy of the automotive industry.
@@billrehm3590 Yeah they do otherwise they wouldn't be called ''timing'' chains. Older Toyotas were universally durable however Toyota or not i wouldn't risk going past 100k km. with my own vehicle. May be you could stretch their longevity to 120-150k km. but the risk is not worth the reward. Honestly this mentality is pretty common in a notable southern European country where they pretty much rarely change their vehicles' consumables (oil, filters, belt/chains, water pump) because their vehicle was new or because it was a Toyota.
Wheel hub assemblies, replaced all four on my Vue at 283,000. Roar and grinding sounds all disappeared. Now at 295,000, replaced catalytic converter at 291,000, no more trouble code 0420. Mileage went back up another 2mpg city and 3mpg highway. More important, motor running cooler.
My dad had an old caravan from 02. Trans went out in 2012 and we scrapped it. They burn through transmissions. Their engines are ok, but their 3.6 in the new ones arent the best.
@@ditiprel4 those caravans are cheap used compared to the Odys and siennas but the 3.6 clatters like a hoopty. The cam fix is about 1,500$ then the transmissions are also not that great
You don't even see newer late odysseys on sale like you do with sienna probably because people either keep them or they junk them after the second transmission goes out
I agree i also think toyota makes a better vehicle i worked at honda from 2001-2009 and they has many problems with the transmissions in the odysseys, civic civic hybrid with the cvt and the accords we were replacing alot of torque converters on the oddesey and pilots under warranty when they were new definitely a design flaw on the transmissions on these newer vehicles we didn't see as many problems on honda vehicles 97 and back.
In my 2015 honda crankshaft went bad & transmission started messing up at 75k miles other than than I loved everything bout it but I went back to toyota
I started off with a 2006 Odyssey touring and traded it for a brand new 2011 EXL with entertainment and put 200k miles on it with the original transmission. I had no issues. I treaded it in for another brand new 2022 Odyssey Touring. Never had any problems with any of my Odyssey vans. I hated the 2016 Odyssey because it came with expensive run-flat tires that could only be purchased from the Honda Dealership. Honda's are great product.
And exceedingly over priced. He wasn't bragging on his son's late model Sienna when a middle row seat bottom spring broke under warranty and the dealer refused to fix it. To my knowledge, Scotty never uploaded a "conclusion"/ fix to that Toyota problem.
Sienna's still had limited production most of 2024. That is the one and only reason Honda Outsold the Toyota. 2025's now being poduced seem to be back to more normal production numbers. Watch the Honda tank in 2025.
Honda handles way better than the sienna, vtec 3.5 is pretty quick too. Sienna is good looking a little more reliable but ya get stuck with a 4 bange hybrid and numb steering
Toyota made some questionable decisions to meet CAFE standards imo. Hybrid everything. Not everyone wants an EV or a hybrid (extra purchase costs and potential repair expenses down the road).
Toyota's problems are closely related to their dealer's network, their recent alliance with Bring My Wallet, and their new management and policy direction; the company is now focused on their Lexus division, with prices Toyota Owners cannot pay. If anyone wants the best transmissions , the only option is the GR Corolla which comes with a 6 speed manual or their new 8 speed automatic transmission; only the most expensive Toyota Crown comes with the 6 speed automatic transmission as well as some Lexus models; the only Toyota Hybrid with the safety of also having a conventional starter and alternator in case of a Hybrid System failure, is the upcoming 2025 Lexus 700h SUV, the most expensive of all, not even the Prius has it yet. No matter is the original Toyota Hybrid in production since Toyota started with Hybrid technology.
Honda still offers the Odyssey with a V6 while the Toyota Sienna Hybrid are hard to find and get unless you're willing to order one and wait for a few months. Used Toyota Sienna with the V-6 are still good, that's the route I would go
I wouldn't even consider something like this and I know my wife wouldn't either. She wouldn't let it on the property. This is the type of vehicle that no one pays any attention to while its on the road.
"BUT it's a "TRD". I know that because Toyota imprinted "TRD" on every flat interior and exterior space on the vehicle." Talking about overkill. I guess that justifies the $65k+ Tacoma TRD Pro price tag.
I'd think so. Same could be said for a lot of Dodge/Chrysler/Plymouth minivans if Scotty's "changing his rules" again. He does that a lot lately, usually in some effort to make Toyota look good.
I prefer the odyssey over the sienna , even if they have a few transmission issues. The odyssey still comes with a v6 and looks a lot better in my opinion.
@@dwang552 Right now, BYD is selling them in Mexico, Columbia, and Brazil; there will be plenty of data available before they make it to the US market.
Come on old man I own honda for 10 years it have 254890 and don't have with transmission as lone you service transmission very 15000 miles you will not have problem and old man some time you and some time you don't know what you talking about
Most women complain every day every hour how they are too good to own a van….. unless of course if the women are rich…. Rich moms love their vans…. I like rich people, they aren’t liars about the vans
Scotty, I have a 2013 Hyundai 2.0T Santa Fe Sport. The Cruise control and switch that changes between displays on the dash sort of work. Think it's a problem with the computer or the switches in steering wheel?
are those factory rebuilt transmissions? or New. There are not many new ones available to the public. I have got in this argument many many times. The dealers always say they are new, BUT THEY ARE NOT. I can tell you that I may sue a dealer if they put a rebuilt in my car and telling me it is new
Ahhh, I don’t think it will kill Toyotas future, Toyota will be fine after the Trump administration is back in office and thinks get back to somewhat normal , what car manufacturers need to learn is that not everyone wants or needs a loaded vehicle, they quit making small pick up trucks and cheap econo cars , instead of pressing electric vehicles they should have kei cars ,trucks , vans they don’t burn a lot of fuel , less fuel less pollution 👈🏼 they don’t build them because there’s no profit margin plus they would have to up grade them for EPA standards and safety , I think American car manufacturers need to start rethinking as a lot of manufacturing is going to be coming back as built USA .
That’s a very stupid design of Hondas V6 still makes V6 engines with a timing belt they just want people to go buy another vehicle when the belt breaks I’ll never buy a Honda vehicle with a V6 engine that has a timing belt 😮😮😮😮😮😮😮😮😮

With a Kilmer.
His editors do that
@@gmanbazHey, it's smart RUclips MO. It's part of the landscape.
This gen Odyssey was known for warping rotors
Toyota would never. 😂
Thanks for the book😂
Changing trans fluid annually is a dealbreaker for me, sorry.
I got the Sienna because Scotty said so. Our neighbors went with Odyssey, and they needed a new Engine.
The timing chains don't need replaced in the toyota.
Honda 3.5.
caravan for its drivability and space and price... pretty reliable V6
My dad had an old caravan from 02. Trans went out in 2012 and we scrapped it. They burn through transmissions. Their engines are ok, but their 3.6 in the new ones arent the best.
We own and still drive an '05 Grand Caravan with the 3.3L. Decent gas mileage but under powered. It's never left me/us stranded....ever.
@@ditiprel4 those caravans are cheap used compared to the Odys and siennas but the 3.6 clatters like a hoopty. The cam fix is about 1,500$ then the transmissions are also not that great
@@NVRAMboi the older ones ceerainly are better. But, the v6 is too big of an engine for their transmissions to handle.
Wut? You said last time it was a piece of Crap (never understood, they are good cars if you driver normal and not crazy)
It's "either/or" w/Scotty. "Either" it's a Toyota OR "it's a piece of crap." :o)
If a vehicle has manual transmission nothing will kill its future.
We love Scotty!!
Toyota committed suicide, turbo engines plus CVT’s will be their downfall.
(Sad Nissan noises)
Could you imagine if they were dumb enough to also make ev cars? On top of the mistake of using tiny turbo charged engines and cvt trans.
In my 2015 honda crankshaft went bad & transmission started messing up at 75k miles other than than I loved everything bout it but I went back to toyota
Can you do a video on the 2023 Nissan? Kix SV.
Merry CHRISTmas Scotty to you and your family!!! 👌✌️
🤣🤣🤣
I started off with a 2006 Odyssey touring and traded it for a brand new 2011 EXL with entertainment and put 200k miles on it with the original transmission. I had no issues. I treaded it in for another brand new 2022 Odyssey Touring. Never had any problems with any of my Odyssey vans. I hated the 2016 Odyssey because it came with expensive run-flat tires that could only be purchased from the Honda Dealership. Honda's are great product.
Nice testimonial. Thanks.
This ignores the fact that Sienna's are exclusively hybrid now.
And exceedingly over priced. He wasn't bragging on his son's late model Sienna when a middle row seat bottom spring broke under warranty and the dealer refused to fix it. To my knowledge, Scotty never uploaded a "conclusion"/ fix to that Toyota problem.
People are buying the Honda because it is a regular engine and transmission (non hybrid), (non EV), (non CVT). The Toyota is Hybrid only with a CVT.
Sienna's still had limited production most of 2024. That is the one and only reason Honda Outsold the Toyota. 2025's now being poduced seem to be back to more normal production numbers. Watch the Honda tank in 2025.
Agree. Siennas were (in effect) backordered for about 18 to 24 mos due to parts/logistics/labor shortages - or at least that's what I heard.
23 mph average speed, not 23 mpg
Honda handles way better than the sienna, vtec 3.5 is pretty quick too. Sienna is good looking a little more reliable but ya get stuck with a 4 bange hybrid and numb steering
Toyota made some questionable decisions to meet CAFE standards imo. Hybrid everything. Not everyone wants an EV or a hybrid (extra purchase costs and potential repair expenses down the road).
@NVRAMboi the Camry is only a couple bucks more than last year's gas 4 banger. I do however prefer a hybrid over full ev.
If they made a new all wheel drive thar was made good with the back set making a bed I'd buy one
The Siena is too big and looks like hearse
Less news .more car repair talk ..
Don't want no stinkin' Hybrid, no eco-joke tubo-boost 3 cylinder, no EV with 200 mile range.
I couldn't agree more!
@liber8or: Preach it brother.
I don’t need to compensate with a bigger truck. 😂
Stupid trend.
You mean you're not going to buy one?
Wow, Scotty says toyota is better than honda...
This is the type of vehicle that no one pays any attention to while its on the road.
why is scotty so nostalgic
Because he's old, like me.
When you get old, you'll understand.
ah
because cars were so much better a few years ago - my 99 Mustang six auto is a damn good car -
So much plastic garbage in newer Toyotas now
"BUT it's a "TRD". I know that because Toyota imprinted "TRD" on every flat interior and exterior space on the vehicle." Talking about overkill. I guess that justifies the $65k+ Tacoma TRD Pro price tag.
New SUVs are vans, just not as useful.
LOVE my 2020 Honda Odyssey ❤❤❤❤ Zero problems after four years.
We just got a 22 with 50 thousand it runs great. There are lots of them on the the road. My son had The Toyota van and it had problems all the time
Isn't an apparent "good review" for this vehicle null, void, and offset when you lose the transmission at 130K?
I'd think so. Same could be said for a lot of Dodge/Chrysler/Plymouth minivans if Scotty's "changing his rules" again. He does that a lot lately, usually in some effort to make Toyota look good.
Toyota is Toyota
I prefer the odyssey over the sienna , even if they have a few transmission issues. The odyssey still comes with a v6 and looks a lot better in my opinion.
V6, non-turbo mini van rigs are usually pretty reliable vehicles. I liked our Ford Windstar when we had it.
How many Windstars do you still see driving around?
@@Andriig75 mine would be if my ex-wife didn't have it. I maintained it. 200.000 miles. Took it to St. John's Newfoundland when it was 10 years old.
honda < Toyota and always will be
No way to dominate the market like Toyota
If China ever gets its $10K EV with a 252 mile range in the US market (i.e., the Seagull), they'll all be in real trouble.
You get what you paid for, Chinese EV are not safe and poor quality.
@@dwang552 Right now, BYD is selling them in Mexico, Columbia, and Brazil; there will be plenty of data available before they make it to the US market.
lol
I always turn off the lane departure 😅
Hello Sir,
Please guide or suggest to me
Which new hybrid vehicle is a good to buy between Elantra hybrid or Camry LE or Civic Hybrid.
You must be new to this channel.
Toyota are reliable vehicle
What about the new Kia Carnival?
It's a KIA?
Come on old man I own honda for 10 years it have 254890 and don't have with transmission as lone you service transmission very 15000 miles you will not have problem and old man some time you and some time you don't know what you talking about
how about being a little respectful in your commentary ... Scotty has forgotten more about cars than most people know in a lifetime
Who knows more?? Haven't found that guy yet.
Most women complain every day every hour how they are too good to own a van….. unless of course if the women are rich…. Rich moms love their vans…. I like rich people, they aren’t liars about the vans
Just before Nissan kills Honda in the merger
My guys the Honda van is selling better than the Toyota van, because the Honda transmission goes out at 150k miles . . . Repeat customers.
The problem with Siennas is availability. Toyota doesn't make enough of them.
Scotty, I have a 2013 Hyundai 2.0T Santa Fe Sport. The Cruise control and switch that changes between displays on the dash sort of work. Think it's a problem with the computer or the switches in steering wheel?
Does Senena van still require 93 octane fuel ?
Since when? My 2018 does not, makes 300hp with a 3.5L V6 and gets 28 mpg highway.
Does English still require proper spelling?
Never required
6:23 woooooaah 💨 🏎 🌿 mode
The Honda is a better looking ride but the timing belt is a turn-off!
are those factory rebuilt transmissions? or New. There are not many new ones available to the public. I have got in this argument many many times. The dealers always say they are new, BUT THEY ARE NOT. I can tell you that I may sue a dealer if they put a rebuilt in my car and telling me it is new
Business is Business including competition.
you messed up scotty, put it in sport then do a burn out drag race. On eco it was just using the 3 cylinders from the start
I was hoping this was about the 2025 Honda Prelude
Toyota dealers are Toyota's biggest problem. They are too greedy, and up charge too much.
Toyota and Honda did sepuku
Good to know. Thank You Mr Kilmer 🙏👍🐕🦺🇺🇲
Not while joined to NISSAN!
Eww, who the hell wants a van? 😂
That’s a very stupid design of Hondas V6 still makes V6 engines with a timing belt they just want people to go buy another vehicle when the belt breaks I’ll never buy a Honda vehicle with a V6 engine that has a timing belt 😮😮😮😮😮😮😮😮😮
I like minivans
Hi Scotty
What about the Kia Sedona/Carnival minivan?
Junk
Pre GDI Sedona's aren't bad
