FINALLY!!! My dad drove our 1998 Cherokee XJ Classic off the lot in Geneva Illinois from Lou's Jeep AMC brand new in late fall of 97 I believe only 9 miles on the odometer. I had her for 22 YEARS 503,360k of the hardest miles you could ever imagine. Because I'm a fan of your channel I chose to after 2 decades buy a 5th generation 4runner to this very second I miss her and the in-line dinosaur 6-cylinder engine which never failed me once. It's an absolute shame what parades around today with Jeep badges they are all garbage. I do love my 4runner but always get a little sad when I see an old XJ pass by. When I donated her with the well over half million miles she ran like the day we drove her home and the tape deck cigarette lighter(never used) still worked everything worked but after 2 decades of Chicago road salt, the undercarriage was getting bad. If they sold this exact model, engine, and specs I'd gladly willingly pay whatever they were asking. Miss that girl. The original little tank.
I bought my Cherokee in 1998, drove it for 22 years. Finally sold it due to body rot(westeren Upstate New York). 512,000 miles. Replaced starter, water pump. Guy bought it for the engine, it's still running; in a 1979 Wrangler.
im a tech in buffalo, no one else would believe the work we do, other people would be stumped and think you need new tie rods and control arms for any rusty allignment, this dude from texas at the shop i work at was scared and had no clue what to do about it 🤣
I had an '88 Cherokee with the 4.0L six and a 5-speed. Bought it brand new and kept it for 35 years until the electrical system finally died. Put over a million miles on it - I kid you not. And I was even able to get up to 30 mpg with it. Usually during the summer months, I'd get 28-29 mpg.
Drove a 98 Cherokee Classic for about 15 yrs. My favorite vehicle of all time. Rock solid dependable and enough room in the back to get a sheet of plywood home if needed.
My friend Roy drove his ‘97 Jeep 460,000 miles before he had any major problems. All 3 of his kids were conceived in that thing too. He finally sold it last year and bought a Tacoma.
I had a 98 Jeep Cherokee Laredo Had well over 200 K when I traded it in Salesman took it for his son’s first car It never burned oil Never 4.0 is a bullet proof engine That’s why they don’t make it any more
You hooked up with Roys wife for 2 of those kids is how you know so much🤔 only vehicle with a big enough back seat she was able to keep her legs up in the air long enough 🤭🤣
I owned a '98 Jeep Cherokee for 20 years. The powertrain was indestructible. It was also extremely off-road capable. The only weakness--typical of Jeep vehicles--was the electrical system. In 20 years, I think that I replaced nearly every electrical component on the Cherokee--fans, alternator, wiper motors, switches, instrument panel, etc. But, parts were relatively cheap. I sold it a few years ago when I simply no longer needed it--it's still going strong for the fellow who bought it from me.
I had an 89 and a 2001 XJ 4.0 and loved em. My 2001 had over 250k miles when I sold it. These came with Aisin Warner transmissions which were excellent. Also had a 78 CJ5 with a 258 and they were all amazing simple engines.
I have done this job on this car, the entire dash needs to come out, so you can get the AC box out, so you can crack the AC box in half to get to it. It took me a full day of work.
I own a 1998 2 door Cherokee XJ. I wouldnt trade it for the world. Aboutbto buy a second XJ that just fell in my hands. They are the greatest vehicle ever for me.
I drive a 2001 Wrangler straight 6. Gas mileage not great. Didn't buy it for the mpg. Its fun. Top off, doors off. Had a case of death wobble I fixed with new front end components. I would enjoy owning a Cherokee as well
That engine is the best...and the XJ is unbeatable! I have an 89 Wagoneer LTD which is just an XJ with off-road stuff including the quadratrack 2 system and rock protectors underneath. 245K miles on the thing!
I replaced the radiator in my 2001 XJ. It cost me $80 and about 2 hours of my time. The aftermarket for these things is amazing. You can get everything from 12 hole injectors to a new engine, if you ever blow it up. I love my XJ. I'll keep it forever.
Had a pickup version for 15 years. Agreed,my heater core plugged up. Reversed flushed the core with a garden hose, and voila, it worked like a charm. Yes,off the line it was fast until about 50 mph. Surprised many a Corvette owner back in the day!
Picked up a 2000 XJ many years ago for a song and a dance. After decades in front of a computer monitor I wanted something simple to start learning how to wrench on. The thing has over 200k miles on it, runs like a top, and gets a respectable 23 mpg. I have no intention of ever getting rid of this beast, I'll die before it does :P
My uncle has daily driven his Jeep GC since 1968. looks and drives like the day she was born. BUT it isn’t the vehicle, it’s the owner’s ability to maintain to perfection that creates vehicle longevity. Take great care of anything and it will last.
We had a 97 Cherokee one of the best Jeeps we ever owned. Gave it to one of my sons who was in the army and needed a second car. He sold it. I don't why I told him that I would have taken it back. We replaced it with a 2007 Grand Cherokee plane jane 4wd. We still drive it. When I took it in for service to my trusted mechanics they put it on the lift and they said that it was true, I asked what they meant I they said that the under side of the Cherokee was all MB. Still a fine runner.
I'll never get rid of mine... Bought in 2003 as a lease return and now it's a slightly modified toy for the winter months. No rust either... Oregon doesn't salt the roads!
My brother has a 99 Grand Cherokee(more commonly known as the "WJ" Jeep); it just rolled over 200k and it's a beast! Those inline 6 engines will last forever!
I was recently looking for a Cherokee XJ, but I ended up getting the WJ with the V8, and I can't be more happy with it. I just smile every time I ride it's silly funny
I’m big into loving my minimal tech 2003 Camry. I just bought a used Garman Nuuvi off eBay because I don’t want to keep using my location services to continuously reveal my location. I am going to try and shrink my digital footprint with the goal of getting off the grid and targeted as a consumer
I bought my 2001 Cherokee from a Sheriff's auction in 2009. It's got 190,000, no horn & no heat. I'm retired, so in the winter I only drive it on sunny days. I will keep it until one of us dies.
I love my 2000 Cherokee. Only have 185,000 miles on it. It runs like a sewing machine. My daughter now drives it to college. I bought her a Nissan Versa but she still took over my Jeep.
Had a 1995 Cherokee. It had only two issues - the O2 sensor had to be replaced shortly after I bought it, and the rear lift gate struts went bad (a nice 1x4 board mitigated that). Traded it in with over 150,000 miles and it was still running good. It had the 5-speed manual transmission. Wish my current car had a manual in it.
I have a 2020 Grand Cherokee Summit top of the line. 0 issues.. I change the oil myself religiously every 3-5k miles, never exceeding 5k miles. It will get the tranny fluid change and flush at 70k miles along with the differential fluids. Spark plugs and coils at 90k and it gets washed by hand at least 1once a week. I can see my car lasting awhile because all my Chrysler, Dodges have.
From my experience, they are good. Just spray down everything before the winter with a product like lanolin. And get the salt neutralizer at the car wash.
I have a 91 Jeep Comanche that I drive back and forth to work. It only has 130,000 miles on it. Zero rust one small dime size dent in the bed. AC is the only thing that needs to be fixed.
I had a ‘99’ Cherokee. At 200,000 miles my oil pump failed. Motor number one. I got another used motor and had it installed for $1100. It went for over 250,000 miles and the only other thing that happened was the ignition key wore out.
That was my baby, Scotty. The only problem it ever gave me was the crankshaft position sensor & the doors are welded which rusts & break off eventually making the door sag & consequently leak when it rains. That thing will run forever with its in line slant six based design until jeep-dodge-Chrysler realized they don’t wanna be Toyota & save people money.
I had an ‘88 Jeep Sport Truck 6-cylinder that was basically a pickup version of this vehicle. It was a super good truck. I sold it at 200K miles and bought a GMC. MISTAKE! Live and learn.
I had a 97 5 speed Cherokee I bought used in 2004. Being from Maine it rusted out from under me after 4 years. It was still running strong. You just can't beat those straight 6's. Mike from Maine
1983 jeep Cherokee full body last year before the short body like that one replacement 258 6cyl.what a beast Std.trans. I plowed my drive way in AK with no plow 😅👍
4.0 inline 6 and a340 transmission ( aw4). Basic manual shifted 231 transfer case and two solid axles . It's a basic reliable vehicle that can go 300k miles as long as you do very basic maintenance. Even if the rear main seal leaks you only have to drop the oil pan to slide in the new two piece seal . I've blown a radiator hose on my off-road XJ and drive it 7 miles back on Chinaman's gulch loop to my trailer completely out of coolant . I stopped 5x to let it cool from initial redline over heat ...the only carnage was the heat melted the back 3 injector o-rings which is 30 minute fix total time .
My 96 Jeep was the Best Vehicle made 160.455 runs perfect only time I see “check Engine” is start up mine is a 2door 4X4 5 Speed. I will die owning this vehicle. I have replaced the radiator from 2 core to 3 core and 2 unjoints (front). I use washable air filter, gas hog absolutely!! So is my SD455 Trans-Am that is also a family loom. Will never get rid of good equipment for no price.
very good, I had a 95 Grand Cherokee Laredo for many years. It had the 4 liter 6 (totally indestructible) ran that old girl hard towing 22 ft ski boat, it had 235K miles on it when I traded it in on a 2014 grand cherokee. what a mistake that was. The old looked damn near as good as it did when I got it. lesson learned
The newer jeeps suck, riddled with transmission problems, electrical issues, and for an automobile upwards of $60k this shouldn’t happen!! If you’re looking for a Jeep the 80’s -90’s and older is the way to go
Got a '92 5-speed of my own. Not selling it EVER. They're not the best on gas, DEFINITELY not nearly as cozy or refined as a 4Runner, Pathfinder, or Tacoma. Scott, just be sure to use the right oil. Straight-cam, flat tappet motor. Most people I know of run the Rotella stuff, 5w30, 10w30, 10w40 depending on weather (cold to hot weather). Yeah, diesel oil can potentially poison the cat converter, BUT, a cat is always cheaper than a motor.
I mostly agree with you, but I slightly disagree with you. I had a 1996 Cherokee classic for about 3 years when I was learning to drive, and then for a little after that. This car definitely wouldn't give up, but it had it's issues. Everyone I've known with a Chrysler had coolant issues, and that includes me. It seemed like after I replaced one coolant part another one broke, so I gave up and started just topping it off, but that lead to me spending like 30-40 dollars a month on coolant for this car. On top of that access isn't as easy as you'd think. My mechanic had to replace the water pump, and me and a team also fixed other things and did maintenance items, and multiple times my mechanic said it was hard to get to things, the oil filter specifically is in a weird spot, and can be hard to loosen depending on how tight the last person put it. This car worked as a starting car, but once it becomes a daily driver the cost became too much for me. My grandma has a 99 RX and an early 2000's Rav4, and they have less issues than this vehicle had, and they aren't the best at maintaining their vehicles.
I brought a Jeep 2 door Sport. In the mid 90’s. It had a straight six which I thought was bullet proof. How wrong I was. It needed a valve job after 3 years. Dealer took weeks to get parts & fix it. A year later oil pan leaked oil, engine seized. Sold it for junk. Fun to drive, but I never brought another one. Today’s Jeeps are tin coffins on wheels.
I think the last good Cherokee or Grand Cherokee was the WJ from the late 90s and early 00s. You could still get the straight six and TorqueFlight transmission. After that I think I would pass on one, especially the ones built since the merger with Fiat.
Besides a gas hog the steel is crap, and poorly rust proofed. Rot wagons. I replaced the front and rear floors in a Cherokee Sport. Completely gone from firewall to the rear seat. Fred Flintstone car. Not just sheetmetal either. Torque bars rusted and broke free from the front axle. Rear spring shackles and spring rusted and broke in half. Unibody junk.
Thank you for posting this video, Scotty. I have a 2000, Jeep Cherokee XJ. I now have an intermittent, loud vacuum line whistle. I'm trying to find out what the cause is and fix it. Any suggestions welcome.

the heater core is right behind the glove box. simple

I thought when you have the heat turned off the valve to the heater core closed the core off anyway? So why would it matter if it was plugged?

I drive a 2001 Wrangler straight 6. Gas mileage not great. Didn't buy it for the mpg. Its fun. Top off, doors off. Had a case of death wobble I fixed with new front end components. I would enjoy owning a Cherokee as well
Jeep XJ one of the best vehicles ever made! Mine has over 300k on it.
That engine is the best...and the XJ is unbeatable! I have an 89 Wagoneer LTD which is just an XJ with off-road stuff including the quadratrack 2 system and rock protectors underneath. 245K miles on the thing!
9K at Pep Boys. That is outrageous!
More like, Poop Boys!
They’ve ripped me off before too. Never again….
I replaced the radiator in my 2001 XJ. It cost me $80 and about 2 hours of my time. The aftermarket for these things is amazing. You can get everything from 12 hole injectors to a new engine, if you ever blow it up. I love my XJ. I'll keep it forever.
'94 XJ, 4.0l six, 4WD, 2 dr Sport here. Bought new & still going
Had a pickup version for 15 years. Agreed,my heater core plugged up. Reversed flushed the core with a garden hose, and voila, it worked like a charm. Yes,off the line it was fast until about 50 mph. Surprised many a Corvette owner back in the day!
I had a 95 jeep Cherokee limited, with fog lights on the bumper, i6, gas pig, easy to work on, durable and reliable.
Best vehicle Jeep ever made. I have a soft spot for the XJ.
Your ideas are always impressive. Keep inspiring us with your creativity.🚴🥤😸
Bought a 94 Cherokee with the 4.0. My first 4wd vehicle. I miss it a lot.
I can see my car lasting awhile because all my Chrysler, Dodges have.
what engine??
This one wont. Good luck though.
So the Hemi?
How long do you consider "awhile"?
@@TetraHydroCannabinolTHCno. 3.6 Pentastar
From my experience, they are good. Just spray down everything before the winter with a product like lanolin. And get the salt neutralizer at the car wash.
Had 2. One auto & one 5 spd manual. Just great & easy to work on. Miss the manual!
My 1992 Cherokee Sport had the best 4wd system I’ve ever experienced.
The 258 L 6 was perfected when they added the fuel injection.
This isn’t a 258 it’s a 242
That Jeep is in great shape and they were tough...back then.
Bench seats probably helped make families
I have a 91 Jeep Comanche that I drive back and forth to work. It only has 130,000 miles on it. Zero rust one small dime size dent in the bed. AC is the only thing that needs to be fixed.
Back when a jeep was a jeep!! ❤❤❤
Hi Scott I had a total of 3 Cherokee’s one of mine then 2 one for each of my kids. Plugs, distributor cap, and oil change and they ran forever.
Had my 2 door xj since new in '99. 195k mi. Still a fun drive.
I had a ‘99’ Cherokee. At 200,000 miles my oil pump failed. Motor number one. I got another used motor and had it installed for $1100. It went for over 250,000 miles and the only other thing that happened was the ignition key wore out.
I had 3 of these. Best vehicle I ever owned. I have a Toyota Tacoma and had a Rav-4. Never again.
I have one with almost 300k. Live in the south no salt and no rust. You can't beat a good old Rambler engine with an excellent Toyota transmission.
Merry Christmas, and God bless you, Scotty.
I had a 97 5 speed Cherokee I bought used in 2004. Being from Maine it rusted out from under me after 4 years. It was still running strong. You just can't beat those straight 6's. Mike from Maine
The jeep that was featured on the Roy Rogers Show in the 50s (Nellybelle) would drive itself. 😂
I had 3 of them. I stuck to that model for 14 years. great car. I had to move on now. I have a tacoma. It's a shame what Jeep used to be.
How many times have you said the 3 worst are Kia , Hyundia , AND JEEP
New jeeps bad-old jeeps good 😂
Our mail carrier drives one of these. There's a reason people are still driving these.
I still wish I had my 1999 Jeep Cherokee XJ 2-door. God I was crazy to sell it.
I had one for years. Just a little stiff ride. Over 300000 when sold
I have the 98 limited with the 5.9. Great rig.
The newer jeeps suck, riddled with transmission problems, electrical issues, and for an automobile upwards of $60k this shouldn’t happen!!
If you’re looking for a Jeep the 80’s -90’s and older is the way to go
I have a 91 jeep Cherokee with 331 thousand miles same engine and transmission
I took driver training in a 2000 Cherokee:) I’m 40 now😊
I miss my 92 jeep cherokee limited
One of the very very few American made, 4.0L with AW4,.that can actually rival Toyota with reliability and durability.
I had a 95 2 DR 4wd. Drove the piss out of it. No problems. Great engine. Best car I ever owned....except maybe the Camry.
I brought a Jeep 2 door Sport. In the mid 90’s. It had a straight six which I thought was bullet
proof. How wrong I was. It needed a valve job after 3 years. Dealer took weeks to get parts & fix it. A year later oil pan leaked oil, engine seized. Sold it for junk. Fun to drive, but I never brought another one. Today’s Jeeps are tin coffins on wheels.
These four liters are pretty tough and reliable but Scotty you're off your rocker with this assertion...
I had one of those - miss her. She was a forest green color. Should have kept that Jeep.
I love Jeep Cherokee XJ❤❤❤...mine is 1996 indonesian CKD built.
259k on a 2000. Keeps on going!
I guess Nissan and Honda have entered into talks for a merger, kind of interesting.
1998 was when it became DaimlerChrysler.
Those jeeps are great, I have a 01 and I restored it for my retirement. It runs absolutely perfect, luv it.
You do know that FIAT stands for Fix It Again Tony!
A high quality Jeep, imagine that :)
I think the last good Cherokee or Grand Cherokee was the WJ from the late 90s and early 00s. You could still get the straight six and TorqueFlight transmission. After that I think I would pass on one, especially the ones built since the merger with Fiat.
Have fun doing the head gasket.
I doubt the clogged heater core made it over heat, it sounds more like he had an air pocket in the front of the engine and it wasnt properly purged.
Best car I ever owned.
Use an air compressor to unclog the heater core without removing it.
I’d use low-pressure water after using Prestone first. Might end up blowing a hole in it with compressed air
Thank you for posting this video, Scotty. I have a 2000, Jeep Cherokee XJ. I now have an intermittent, loud vacuum line whistle. I'm trying to find out what the cause is and fix it. Any suggestions welcome.
A real American made car ,made in Hamtramic ,Michigan . Detroit iron . American motors ,Chrysler .
Old skool jeeps are the best
