The thing about prices has to do with whether you live like a tourist or a Nepali. If you buy rice and such it's really cheap. If you want to buy pasta at the supermarket it's almost as expensive as in the west. When I stayed in Kathmandu in guesthouses my food budget was $10 a day. That was budgeting pretty well and not usually getting a latte or meat. But I always eat at tourist-friendly places so I don't have to do the Kathmandu Kuick-Step. I've lived in Nepal 8 years and love it more as time goes by. I also have a youtube channel where we help tourists with tips for Nepal.

All alcohol products are quite expensive in Nepal. This is because of high custom duty and extra taxes on these items as government refers to these items as "luxurious items". So, When we think of buying alcohol, there has to be some special occasion or gathering. And there are not many alcohol addicts in Nepal. However, we get local alcohol at very affordable price. It is made up of kodo(millet seeds).

local beer are cheaper than what they have in thier country.they pay 20$ for 6 Coruna beer get 8-9% alcohol iguess. And they are in medium sizes.
And in Nepal u can get a double the size of beer incompare to other country beer and it get 12-15% alc i guess.Around Rs250 u can get good beer. And 1 beer can serve 2 and half people whereas corunna serve only 1 people. And u have to drink the whole thing and u still cant get drunk✌
      And Nepalese beer is best.
      Peace

Oooh, ten years ago I lost my Nepali pashmina scarf in a movie theater in Denver. Maybe I need to contact Ganesh to see if it's possible to ship one to the US. I really liked that scarf. I saw the email on the sign. After pay day, I may have to email him. While expensive, it's still so reasonable when compared to other travel destinations. I can see how it would be an affordable destination after airfare. I cannot WAIT to see the trek portions of your time there. Very excited for that!! Also: I showed the Nepali student a bit of the opening of this video at the end of classes today. He was in a hurry to leave, but he gave it a thumbs up. 😉 Keep having fun! 👍🏼✌🏼

If you eat the local food it's really cheap but not always very hygienic. Things like lettuce aren't grown here. Coffee is surprisingly expensive for something grown here, but still I think $6 is pretty good for a western dinner in Nepal. Also, if you happen to be here during the monsoon you'll need to avoid lettuce and spinach, especially when eaten raw. Well, you should avoid eating salads in Nepal due to hygiene. It's getting better and now that the pandemic has come upon us people are understanding why cleanliness is so important. I love living here in Nepal.

Really enjoyed this video. Reminded me of my city! I completely get it - when I was living in Nepal, I thought American products were so expensive. A box of Pringles, a bar of Snickers - these were products we splurged on. But, if you get local Nepali products, they are wayyyy cheaper. And yes, Thamel is one of the expensive areas in Kathmandu. There are some fancy restaurants in KTM which are absolutely expensive but you gotta find the local gems and try the local food.
PS. We Nepalis have to pay a hefty price for the Nepali products here in States! I'm not sure if that's the case in NZ as well! 🤔

Pringles in the US is 1.00 a can at Walmart and any supermarket. At a gas station it runs about 2.50 a can.

Could you live on like 700 dollar a month in Nepal in theory? For food and shelter.. Would it be very poor? Or standard over there. How much do they live on every month? Thanks!

How much is that for monthly living cost in kathmandu?

  • @julien1342

Nepal is the most expensive country I've been. I paid for the Everest Base camp trek without any agency or guide in the off season about 8000-9000 Euros from Germany for two persons. I reckoned with 2000 to 3000 because it is a very poor country. But it is absolutely not. Fuel prices are higher than in Germany (far more then 2€) and so also the taxis, flights, etc.
With a little knowledge, Georgia in the Caucasus is extremely cheap, but you have to watch out for rip-offs.

Seems like the prices are similar to Thailand, where alcohol is also high. I was booked to go to Kathmandu the week after the earthquake, Air Asia was surprisingly easy to get ti fly me elsewhere. Cheers!

Tourists mostly stays in thamel area which is a heavy tourism area where they pay the rent of upto 6000$ and if you go to non tourist area it will take you half the price in restaurants but provably not for supermarket stuffs so if you dont want to get robbed got to non tourist area for your needs it will cost you musch less
