One way to have "status", even when one comes from a family with little wealth, is being good and skillful at some things such as at difficult studies, being good in some performance art such as music performance, ect. I didn't have money, and I had to work hard in the summers at labor jobs to earn money for college. But, I was a scholar in physics and a skilled French horn player, in the wind ensemble and symphony. I needed those accomplishments to have my self esteem. This was at the University of Oregon.
You are very engaging to listen to, regardless of the topic. You have a great explanatory style of speaking. After high school, I attended a community college part-time for two years while working full-time, then transferred to U.C. Santa Barbara.
Remember San Francisco and Los Angeles were always centers of LGBTQ life - even before Stonewall. It wasn't just a class thing: It was working class gay men who fought the police at Stonewall and Compton's Cafe (SF's Stonewall)🌈
Oh man, when I was at the University of Illinois in Urbana Champaign, we had that too - I saw more audis, high end teslas, corvettes, than I ever had before. Even saw some rich kid's audi being delivered at the beginning of a semester off a truck. Wild contrast seeing him sign the paperwork with the trucker who was likely worse off than me. In my case I think the irony was that the rich kids, if they didn't slot into the college party scene, they treated the town as purgatory, and never actually 'lived' there, you know?
In terms of my family incomes, mine were too low to be counted in the economics teacher's anonymous poll of the class in freshman year at Tulane University, but in terms of personal spending money, I was very much at the rich end of the spectrum because I had become a full-time professional writer and broadcaster while also carrying a full time student course load. But, I had little time to play - it was mostly school and work, work, work.
You have a great way of putting things into perspective. I love your story telling. You seem to be a caring and sensitive young man.. You are fine just the way you are.
When I was growing up in the post - War Britain of the 1950's, class was pretty much determined by your family of birth, it was something inherited rather than acquired through money. In fact at that time many of the aristocracy and upper classes were fairly impoverished. We had a system which might be called 'sponsored' class mobility whereby poorer kids (like myself) from working class homes, if they were bright could possibly advance by gaining entry to a profession. Money was seen as essential but the pursuit of money as an end in itself was seen as something rather vulgar. Ostentatious displays pf money, such as your colleagues designer clothes were seen as especially vulgar and denoting a lower class background. Times have changed but I enjoyed your discussion of contemporary aspects of this issue
i had a very similar experience. i grew up in pennsylania and moved to california. i feel socially stupid here and don't quite get it, but i keep trying haha.

This certainly resonates, and I remember seeing this at my college. “The gays” from wealthier areas always seemed to be more put together. The interesting thing was how the inverse seemed to happen, where a few of them dropped pretenses and were able to adjust to a more diverse (and perhaps less wealthy) cohort of fellow students. I remember one who came to the LGBTQ+ center on our campus, and thought our daily routine of eating chips and watching will and grace on DVD was “beneath” him. By the end of the semester, he was one of us 😂
My last year of college I got stuck in a dorm room with a geeky, visually challenging, ROTC guy. He was terrified of me, or I should say "the gays." In the fall term, we may have spoken 10 words to each other, well 10 words from me, and 5 grunts from him. His side of the room was pure dorm, no personal items other than a swim trophy. Mine had a carpet, several plants, a painting over the bed, matching desk accessories and an antique trunk as a coffee table. The clothes in my closet were arranged by color. Sound familiar? One of my friends, a very elegant woman from South Africa, used to bring me all of her European travel and fashion magazines at the end of every month. If I wasn't around, ROTC would point to the trunk. He refused to touch those "gay-making" rags! If I was around, he would flee the scene, leaving my friend and I to roll on the floor with laughter. He probably wasn't a "bad" guy, he just had limited exposure and BIG fear. Around finals time, he spoke his only full sentence to me. "I won't be back after the Christmas holiday. I'm moving down the hall to "Sam's" room, and I've been asked to join his frat." Well, you could have knocked me over with a pink feather! I was free of his awkward disapproval, had the room to myself for the whole spring semester and found it hilarious to watch "Mortimer Snerd" frat it up in white cargo pants (it was the 80's) and colored golf shirts with a popped collar. I had my people. I guess he found his.
Im a bush kid. Went to a boarding school for the rich in highschool via scholarship. They won't change for you if you're hanging out with them and you're poor. But i did get a few concessions from them. I learned they will never see you as an equal because they grew up a certain way different from you. Less community minded. I found not many of them go on to join queer activism at uni. I did and many other queers from low economic families.
I have to say, I find it a little disturbing you seemed to think they were somehow better than you, simply because their parents had more money. It wasn't your classmates that earned that money, it was the parents who garnered all that wealth, and saw to it their children wanted for nothing. That does not mean they'll go on to create their own fortunes (some will, no doubt, but not all of them). I would be more impressed with what they did with the privilege they were given. Did they help out those less fortunate? Did they work to make the lives of LGBTQ kids better? Did they help out with homeless LGBTQ kids, many of whom had been kicked out of their homes, sometimes as young as 14? That would matter to me far more than how much money their parents could blow on making their dorm room nicer.
@@charlesterry2480 It's called making the world a better place...for ALL. If your parents are that wealthy, then you don't have to work to pay for college, which means you have more time to devote to helping others.
I would have asked for a discount on the room & board part of my tuition. I would have raised holy hell if I was paying the same money for a 3rd of a room that others were paying for a 1/2.

It's tough being in an environment where everyone around you has more money and privilege and it can make you feel inferior (esthetically speaking) but that doesn't mean he is or was a better "gay" than you! He was just wealthy....you're intelligent, thoughtful, witty and good-looking with a realistic outlook on life and you sound like you know the value of life experience and achieving your goals. Your roommate and his friends sound like nice guys but they also sound kind of vacuous and empty. They might have looked great on the outside but were they also blessed with higher thoughts? Were they philosophical like you? Did they open their minds to greater ideas and consider the meaning of their lives. I'd take empty pockets and a full mind over an empty mind and full pockets anyday personally. I like your channel and I love your stories and how you think 🙂👍

Not everyone comes form wealth. I went to a state school in the Midwest and then moved to California. So yeah, most people I grew up and went to school with are not super wealthy. And not everyone in California is super wealthy unless they are from La Jolla, Atherton or Beverly Hillls. As soon as you accept and like the way you are, then you'll see why it's better to hang out with other people that appreciate you for you. If you judge people for being rich or being poor that might not be a rewarding approach to life. In the same way, if someone judges you for not driving a Bentley, they may not be worth spending time with.
.....and when you do become wealthy, the really cool wealthy people don't brag about it. Maybe it's my Midwestern middle class roots, but it is really tacky to do so.
