Now this is how to do a cover. Take a song, change it (melody, harmony, instruments, chords, arrangements.....) in an attractive way....and boom! That's what Marty and his boys do here!! GREAT STUFF. I hope Tom Petty heard this (may he rest in peace).
6 months later Tom was gone. I hope to God they still play this one live in tribute to Tom because this is my favorite version of this song besides Tom's and I NEED to see this live.
I am constantly astounded by how utterly fantastic Marty Stuart and the Superlatives are. They can play anything and make it their own!!!! It would not surprise me to hear them cover "The Three Tenors" and KILL IT!!!!!!! They are MORE than that good.
I am huge Marty fan. His musical talents are unparalleled. This particular video/ recording is an example of his excellence. The Superlatives are just that....very aptly named. Well done. Classic tribute
I saw these guys last night in Bethel Woods, NY. FABULOUS!! So tight, absolutely incredible, happy crowd ~ I loved everything about the concert. My first concert since Nov 2019 ~~ and THAT concert was my classical flute hero ~ James Galway! And it was phenomenal! Because of taking guitar lessons during Covid from a Carter family researcher, I found my way to Marty Stuart land. Thank you Dr Elyas Isaac! This pandemic’s been absolutely devestating to many folks, hard and sad to others. Learning about Marty Stuart has been a ray of hope for me. I drove 2 1/2 hours by myself to see Marty and the Superlatives yesterday, stayed in a hotel overnight, drove home today. I am so happy that Marty resumed touring this summer and that I could go to one of his performances THIS year.
AGREED! I saw Marty and his band back in 2012 when he came through St. Louis with Merle Haggard. It was my first and only time seeing him live and to this day, it's probably the best concert I've ever attended!
@MrJrhoffman they just played this on Tom Petty Radio about 20 mins ago. (9:23pm Aug. 3, 2018) Just thought you'd like to know they used your version. It was clear as day it was this video because of the Tom Petty impression they do at the very end of the song and the vocal mic sound...
John Douglas Racing Video thanks for the heads up! I went back and listened and it sure is from my video! Pretty cool. Makes sense because Rolling Stone online grabbed it a while back and I see it was played on David Frickes show. Thanks again!
No problem. And yes it was on David Fricke's show on Tom Petty Radio. I sent them a message saying this cover was amazing. Next thing I know it's on the channel and the very version I heard. So damn cool.
I didn't know it was possible to shred on a mandolin. Sounds fantastic! And I like Tom Petty's original quite a bit! Good music for driving 15+ over the speed limit.
These guys are stellar, and always put on a great show. Marty is a country/bluegrass legend and he's earned the right to own his style and to wear his hair any damn way he pleases. When you have talent like these guys, hair and wardrobe are irrelevant.
it's called a persona/brand. the dude can play (and sing) his ass off, unlike most folks even 10 years his junior. what do you want him to wear? dockers? :)
Marty Stuart wears custom stagewear by Manuel. Just like Dwight Yoakam. And before that it was Nudie. Learn your Country gear history. Marty looks frickin' SHARP !!!
+huskvarsm "Grow old with dignity" ? or grow old with no sense of fashion/flair ? Which from your statement sounds like you have lacked such things in life ? as far as his hair,,At least he still has his hair.. You sound envious, just because you wouldn't dress like he does,,does NOT make Marty wrong,,in fact,,I dress like him,,have long, well groomed hair and I am 54 y.o... And YES I am growning old with dignity,,not worried or care what people of any age think about it/me..I live this life for ME !

Awrsome cover. Marty Stuart really killed it on that mandolin.
So good. Tom Petty would love this. As a fan of Marty and bluegrass it's a triple love for me.

Marty and the guys just kill it. What a great cover!!

A Superlative Shredded Solo
Thank you to Marty Kenny, Chris and Harry.
Best ensemble ever ❤
Awesome
That's fn' great! 😉
So sad that Marty did produce some music with Tom Petty. Tom was a true fan of authentic country music.
Super
Really like the "look" of this video...any info on camera, lens, post production processing?
cochrantd Really simple and basic. An iPhone 7+ shot in 4K setting and then used the iPhone's sepia filter post production.

Superlative
The real deal.
Who's the bass player?
Doris Peiffer Chris Scruggs. Earl Scruggs' grandson.
Thank you! No wonder he's so talented. I think Tom Petty would of loved this version of his song.

Learn to cover things that you can change.
i like the guy but he just wont grow old with dignity intead he wears ridiculous clothes and even worse hair

Marty is one of the few guys who honors his country heritage. World class player and just a slick dude. He and his band are so great live.

That mandolin makes Marty look really big.
