It should be all wrapped up in the next day or two. Thanks again for watching, and please let me know what you think in the comments below.
Hey Ralph! Just wanted to let ya know, you don't need to download a ftp program. If connected to the same network, open a window on your computer and type \\RETROPIE This will open a few folders including the roms folder 😁
This kit is great for people who either, can’t afford multiple arcade cabinets each with its own game, or just don’t have the space available. Great video!
I have to admit I'd probably want to keep it on VS The Goonies; this game wasn't released on the US NES at all, which is pretty neat. However I really like that this Pi mod doesn't change the original hardware at all, as opposed to something more dramatic like doing a JAMMA mod or hard-wiring the buttons to USB. So everyone should be happy here
Dude, love it. You're keeping the original intact (always preferable, imho) but just giving it more functionality and making it into a unit that could be somebody's first (or only) cab. Really cool.
I think it's a great idea - emulation or not this solution is definitely more practical from almost every standpoint. Good to see you embracing your "Pie" Dad jokes as well. Keep up the great work with the new video format!!
That is very cool way of keeping Arcades alive. We all know the PCBs will probably fail at some time. The other nice feature, like you mentioned is being to have multiple games on one cabinet. That saves space, and allows more game selections.
Ralph, love the idea! I had a discussion with a friend yesterday regarding something similar. As a collector, I strive to keep the cabinets original hardware, however as you suggested, sometimes you just cannot afford the real board or can't find one. Using some other method to play the game, doesn't make it less enjoyable. In the end, as we grew up playing these games, did we really know if they were bootlegs or original, or even what the heck was inside of the cabinet??? No one knew, or how many times we played dour favorite game in some shity cabinet, not even dedicated. The important part is that we continue to enjoy the games we love and keep the cabinets alive one way or another. I picked up an MK3 which has been on my forever want list the other day which sadly has been painted black and converted to a Sega extreme hunting 2 game. A MK3 board is $450 Canadian. There is no way I will spend that kind of money on a board. I will restore the cab as it looked from factory but run a PC with special drivers for the CRT resolution and run all the MK games. I can guarantee no one will know the difference. Emulation has come a long way.
This is slick and another great way to segway folks into real arcades as its simple and not too intimidating. This way if your just stetting started and want to tinker with real hardware you always have a working solution when you just want to play a classic Nintendo game on a classic cabinet.
Thanks bud, I hope all is well. vs. Castlevania would be awesome. Dreamcast Kyle said the same thing... haha. Great minds think alike. I'm actually getting another vs. Unisystem from a trade later on today. It's a red cabinet so I'm thinking "Red Donkey Kong" but I'm not sure.
Yea buddy! This is sick! I know you all love the original PCBs but when in these situations the pi is perfect , glad to see RetroRalph using it in this situation. Plus the mod it's even more awesome 😎 .
Thanks for watching bud, It's much appreciated! Also, thank you for taking the time to comment. I hope you have a great day man! Original PCB's are getting crazy pricey these days, so I think this is a good alternative for those who can't find good prices on some of their favorite titles.
This is dooope! I love me some Raspberry Pi. Really like the Marquee you chose. I would really like one of these classic Vs style cabs. I think Popeye is the coolest of the old Nintendo cabs.
I can't believe how clean that vs pcb board looks. The whole project turned out beautiful. In future projects, I really want to see an FPGA board playing the original rom.
I have a few FPGA boards but they're for arcade games I don't currently own... LOL. I will for sure get into the topic in the coming months. Thanks for watching my dude!
Very cool. I had not looked at this adapter, I might have to pick one up. Currently my VS cabinet runs the MultiVS Kit from High Score Saves, so I have 8 Nintendo standard VS games on it.
@@RetroRalph super easy install. Mostly plug and play in the ROM section. If you buy the swapper add-on there's also two wires to solder to the edge connector. I have issues with the gun games. Not sure if it's a gun issue (I'm using a modified NES zapper; it registers the trigger pull, but doesn't read on screen) or a ROM issue, they don't offer the gun games anymore for my PPU. The other games work perfectly.
That's awesome! I'll have to keep this in mind. I'm definitely open to a Pi solution, but I think it would be really awesome to hook up an actual NES so it could accept cartridges. The idea I had was to get an old Arcade1Up cabinet, and one of those HDMI boards they use to connect to the A1U display, and connect the NES to that through a Frammeister or something. For the control panel, I was going to replace the guts with the guts from a couple of Retro-Bit power sticks. I was thinking of getting one of their countercades, and mounting it to a TV stand so that there would be a shelving to store the actual NES, as well as storage for the cartridges.
If you buy the Pi kit add on you don't have to configure anything other than the controls when the system 1st boots up. Oh and adding the games but that's it. If you want to do it yourself, the instructions are outlined in the install manual here: highscoresave.com/media/pdf/85/3c/41/Raspberry-Pi-to-Single-Monitor-Playchoice-or-VS-adapter3nwffzuaLajW3.pdf
Yes, exactly! Thanks for watching! It would be cool to have a plug and play FPGA solution for nintendo cabs but I don't think anyone will touch it because Nintendo rules with an iron fist. This is a great alternative though. Thanks again for watching!
Really cool! Now the only issue...only 2 buttons for all of the games that have more than 2 buttons....but for an Nes library and older two button games, this would be perfect.
Great video Ralph! I had a Vs Super Mario at one time and would have loved to do this. I would put only Vs System roms on the RB Pi to make it a dedicated Vs cabinet might be cool.
Video Suggestion: CRTs...in the future (or lack of them)...and video cabinets. You mention in this video how you prefer CRT gameplay. In the "Barn" video you guys discuss how CRTs are not going to be viable in the near future. Can u do a video on this topic - CRTs "now", 5 years, 10 years, etc...and how that impacts Retro Gaming and emulation. BONUS: Include something about Vector Monitors :-)
I don't think most arcade game collectors would have a problem with this specific mod. It doesn't hack up the original wiring, uses all the same connectors, power supply, and, importantly, the original Sanyo 20EZ CRT monitor. The problem collectors/purist normally have is when a mod destroys or removes original parts. Scrapping a Sanyo that is working or could be repaired and replacing it with an LCD is pretty much unforgivable. This solution, to me, is perfect. It allows the cabinet to remain original and is easily converted back to the Nintendo VS pcb just by moving the wire harness.
I've got an assortment of Nintendo cabinets in my collection (Donkey Kong, DK JR, Popeye and Mario Bros, including the widebody Mario Bros). One of my cabinets all be it not pi based is PC based and has a collection of NES ROMS. I believe the complete US ROM set which is pretty cool.
Unfortunately there's no support for light gun games with the highscroesaves kit featured in this video. I suppose it could be accomplished with other gun tech directly wired to the Pi. Maybe the Gun4IR CRT version, I haven't played with it yet though.
Retro Ralph You should check out Arcade Jason's Pi Position. Which is a replacement using a Raspberry Pi for Pole Position. This plays Pole Position and Pole Position II.
You can do it bud, let me know if you have any questions. There's a lot that went into the restore but the good news is, there's a lot of companies that make reproduction parts if you need them! Good luck and don't hesitate to ask for help if you need it.
Kick ass job Ralph. Having the option of using the original hardware along side this Pi kit is truly the best of both worlds. Are you keeping this one in your collection or selling it? I don’t envy your Atari system 1 project. But I’m sure you will do well with that one also.
Good question, I always grow attached to these cabinets. I'm not sure, my intent was to sell it but now I'm not sure... LOL. Yeah the Atari System 1 project is going to be a tough one to source parts for at a good price but I'm going to try. Thanks for watching bud, it's much appreciated!
Do the power supplies on arcades break often? Seems like there's still a point of failure there relying on the old power. Total newbie here. Wouldn't mind getting rid of My legends ultimate for something like this.
They break all the time; I typically add new switching power supplies to all my machines where applicable. I'm still trying to understand certain power supplies like the one the Atari System 1 uses. They used a few variants, and it's not as cut and dry as, say, some of the 90's technology.
I have 1 of these modded boards. 2600 helped me get it up and running because I had the pi4 and it works best with a pi3. I wanted to get a few more of these boards but highscoresave won't sell 2600 products anymore. Bummer.
This would be tricky, and for sure not directly supported. I'm actually not sure how you would accomplish that with this mod. It's a great question. I know the Gun4IR can but I haven't played with the CRT options yet. Thanks for watching and awesome question!
wOw this is a great way to keep something old that you may not be able to find parts for still working....I have seen a few post on here about the CRT thing....at some point as you have said they will be obsolete...then what? and I get how LCD vs CRT for Arcade is way dif...but whats the thought moving forward? .....Great video/info .......oh and that Pie looked good....hope you didn't waste it hahaha
Thanks for watching man, I had a piece of the pie and then my son and his friends ate the rest... haha. I'm not sure what the future holds for CRT's but they're not getting any younger and they don't have an infinite lifespan unfortunately.
I took this answer directly from the HighscoreSaves website, someone asked a similar question. You can run this in a Red Tent or Dual Vs. cab if you have two harnesses or if you don’t use one side. I have a Red Tent with the Playchoice kit and can run one on each side.
That's an awesome idea! Do you know where to get a Polybius inspired rom? I never really looked but I thought someone made one based on what people "think" the game was like. If it existed, I still like to think that it did, even though it was highly unlikely.
@@RetroRalph I don't know exactly where one is but I am still looking for one so I can add it to my arcade1up if I find one I'll let you know maybe one of the fan made version is the best bit
I don't know what you're saying here, I'm pretty certain the VS. stood for Versus not Video System. Otherwise it would be called the "video System unisystem". I could be wrong but vs. is also the written abbreviation for versus. I have never heard anyone refer to it as "Video System". If I understand what you're saying in your comment.

@@RetroRalph well VS Castlevania is a one player game. That’s why I always thought is video system. The truth? The world will never know.
The Nintendo vs. unisystem titles were nes games. It’s based on the mostly the same hardware as the nes. So people who are unisystem owners would probably dig this solution.

Please stop zooming after ever sentence. So annoying. Also, SSH stands for secure shell, so you essentially said "use secure secure shell". It's like going to the "ATM machine" or installing a "NIC card".
Why does having this along side the original PCB bother you? Some might not be able to afford a replacement board at today's prices. I'm not suggesting someone destroy working hardware (as stated in the video) but this is a great alternative for people who either can't source the parts or they have become too expensive. Original PCB prices are becoming ridiculous IMO. I will still pay them because I have the means but not everyone does. So should they just quit the hobby? What is your suggestion for someone in this situation? This MOD does not alter the original art, control panel, cabinet, monitor or even the original hardware as its plug and play from original to the highscroesaves board. I mean it's not even really a MOD as it in no way affects the original integrity of the cabinet hardware.
@@RetroRalph keep it original.. if you can’t afford to do so then you should not be involved in the hobby of collecting. It takes money to keep things nice
@@toddmartin6572 not everyone who played old arcade games is fortunate enough to have the money to spend on original hardware, as supply will diminish, the barrier for original components will continuously go up so that only few can maintain these machines. I'm sure the creators of these games/arcades will appreciate a wider audience getting to experience playing these even if it's not how it was originally intended.
@@fbuko newly produced boards make the value of the games decrease thus creating a wider group of people making multicades with garbage rom files in them. The art of arcade collecting means a true dedicated person with the knowledge and money to preserve them as they should be..
@@toddmartin6572 understood, everyone has their opinion on this topic. I personally try to keep everything original, down to the original power supply, even if it requires rebuilding. However, I’m open to some of these newer solutions too as long as people aren’t destroying the integrity of the original system In the process. I’m currently wrestling with a LETA chip on an Atari system 1 and if there was a system 1 FPGA option, I would highly consider it. So I have more of a hybrid way of thinking about the hobby. Preservation of the system cabinet , controls, artwork and CRT but I’m open to newer system board options if it means the game will be preserved for longer. Anyway, great conversation and I think this will become more and more a topic of conversation as the hardware continues to age.

Good point, I don't see why you couldn't.
@@RetroRalph I say in theory because with the pie nothing is for sure until your done tinkering and its finally working.
Make a Polybius cabinet for Halloween
That's an awesome idea! Do you know where to get a Polybius inspired rom? I never really looked but I thought someone made one based on what people "think" the game was like. If it existed, I still like to think that it did, even though it was highly unlikely.
@@RetroRalph I don't know exactly where one is but I am still looking for one so I can add it to my arcade1up if I find one I'll let you know maybe one of the fan made version is the best bit
@@marmario259 Thanks bud, I will look as well and let you know if I find anything.
@@RetroRalph thanks
Cool
but your Goonies arcade only has 2 buttons...a lot of arcade games require more than 2 buttons
Shame the marquee isn't emulated for each game.
VS ≠ versus; VS = Video System
I don't know what you're saying here, I'm pretty certain the VS. stood for Versus not Video System. Otherwise it would be called the "video System unisystem". I could be wrong but vs. is also the written abbreviation for versus. I have never heard anyone refer to it as "Video System". If I understand what you're saying in your comment.
@@RetroRalph well VS Castlevania is a one player game. That’s why I always thought is video system. The truth? The world will never know.
i am confused why you would play NES on an arcade cab
The Nintendo vs. unisystem titles were nes games. It’s based on the mostly the same hardware as the nes. So people who are unisystem owners would probably dig this solution.
@@RetroRalph ahh my bad. enjoy. my buddy owns a local arcade and recently suggested a vs cab i was unaware that you could change games..i own a neo geo mvs consolised and my first arcade was bought like 2 months back a phoenix cocktail great shape :)
@@marcretro nice man, you can change the games but the boards are getting super expensive so it’s kind of a bummer. Anyway… thanks for watching man! Much appreciated! 🙏🏼
@@RetroRalph i love your channel keep up the good work. anyone who likes Arcade games is a friend of mine. visited an almost local arcade on my holidays went twice so fun they use tokens felt different. more retro? lol token cups..
@@RetroRalph dont think nes had the goonies tho. They had goonies 2. Vs the goonies is pretty rare from what i remember. I only saw 1 in the wild. At a truck stop when i was very young. Even the galloping ghost arcade doesnt have it. And he has like 829 titles, currently. Fun game from what I remember
I did CHERRY PIE
Of course you did... LOL. I would expect nothing less. ;-)
@@RetroRalph HA LOVE YOU BUDDY
Still emulation... nice concept but no thanx... i prefer the old boards.. sure they're expensive but arcade machines are not cheap.
Quit wasting pies Ralph!!!!!
I still ate it... LOL! I would never waste a good pie... haha. Thanks for watching bud!
😂😂😂 That is great.
@@RetroRalph I was more against the wasting of pie than the use of a pi... hehe. Glad you saved the retro dessert :) Non-destructive/reversible alternatives should be applauded. Cab looks great! Fun video.
That pie ain't raspberry 🙄
Please stop zooming after ever sentence. So annoying. Also, SSH stands for secure shell, so you essentially said "use secure secure shell". It's like going to the "ATM machine" or installing a "NIC card".
People who do this garbage mod to classic games should not be allowed to own classic cabinets..
However, I’m open to some of these newer solutions too as long as people aren’t destroying the integrity of the original system
In the process.
