I am Italian, living in the UK, and I 100% agree with you. From both countries, I observe a scarcity mindset. I’ve also lived in the US, and it’s the same there. It feels like Western society is collapsing
Absolutely agree with the point you made about scarcity mindset here in the UK mate, it's almost contagious. No point staying here in the long term if you want to live up to your aspirations and develop both professionally and personally.
I am from Poland and I lived 10 years in the UK. I went to the UK after my studies with 2 good university master's degrees after working for a while as a Spanish teacher at a secondary school. My Polish teacher's salary in 2008 was so low that I was not even able to buy one book per month. I went to the UK after being recruited in Poland for a support worker role working with autistic people. Of course, I was doing the job far below my expectations, but at that time I had no other choice. My 10 years in the UK were a constant battle to prove who I am, and that I can work hard. I wasn't happy at that time with all these jobs knowing that it was not my place. COVID-19 stopped everything and I was forced to stay in Warsaw, Poland. Today I know, that the depression that I was fighting with all the time while living in the UK was not only due to the weather or the type of job I was doing. It was due to the whole lifestyle and the people surrounding me. I realized that I would never combat the system and would never find a good and satisfying job. Moreover, I had a feeling that some British consider myself a second-class citizen. It happened to me a few times to be racially abused in very subtle, British ways. I am very grateful for many things during my life in the UK, but today I know one thing for certain: I will never return to this country to live anymore. Now I live my normal, steady life in Warsaw, Poland - my homeland and I feel rewarded financially and much happier.
I'm British and I worked/travelled in China/Vietnam for 5 years, and only returned in December 2023, and my savings from China have helped buy a lovely 2 bedroom flat, so I'm very grateful to China. I agree about the negative culture in the UK. It's very toxic 😭
I know what you mean. I lived in Australia for years and they don't see success as a threat. Cutting people down is however a weakness. I see it as a challenge and it's always good to get the better of sarcastic bitter little people
Personally i dont think it has to do with a scarcity mindset, i think it just has to do with envy. ''I can't do it therefor you shouldnt be allowed to either'' or: ''I'm trying to do it, so i dont want YOU to do it''. America is not an envious culture, they are happy for people to be successful and are willing to help anyone become successful, because in the U.S., the mind set is that if i help you in anyway and you become successful, then i shall share in that success, directly or indirectly, by knowing you, knowing you circle and having participated. Also, the UK has a class system which the US does not. Successful, wealthy people mix commonly with everyone else in the US and failure is admired and forgiven.
Good luck with your endeavour! I agree with most of your evaluation, especially around the lack of risk-taking culture and perceiving being ambitious negatively
From sitting next to you on the plane home from Copenhagen to now my phone screen. How weird, smashing it bro. I’d love to collaborate, I’m a photographer in my final year at university so let me know if I can help you out with anything. Again keep smashing what you are doing!
This came in my suggested and I've felt this same effect for the last 4 years! It definitely feels isolating here taking any "unconventional" route e.g. entrepreneurship
Great video sol, I can relate to your thinking. Agree that we shoot too many people down before giving them an opportunity and that many places don't do the same. In your opinion where are your top three places to move as an entrepreneur?
thanks mate very kind! From my experience: 1. Bali - it's cheap so gives you loads of runway and is filled with entrepreneurs 2. Austin - this is where I'll be heading (fingers crossed) in September. Lots of aspirational people and tech companies moving there 3. Dubai - people moving there to grow businesses with no tax The logic of all those suggestions is finding the largest quantity of entrepreneurs in one space while also living a great life. I know San Fran and NY are also great but they just don't appeal to my lifestyle wise! Hope that helps
Great vid mate. I'm looking at other options too, going to Dubai next week for a holiday, potential full-time move in the future. I run a marketing agency, would love to connect with you.
@@solhyde yes its amazing, 0-9% corp tax, safe, clean, world class airports and airlines with direct flights to basically any major city in the world. I left for dubai 4 years ago, whilst i don't love it here and i do miss some bits about the uk, i got out before it got even worse, Australia still has Tall poppy syndrome. id say bali is a better shout than dubai hands down
Good luck mate. Need more videos like this to try to change the uk culture because although it's all well and good people like you leaving its will long term damage the country. I'd love to see the government bring in a tax exemption scheme for startups.
At £10k per month you’d have to register for VAT. So you’re paying 20% on revenue Plus the higher tax brackets (40% above £50k) And you lose your tax free allowance by £1 for every £2 that’s above £100k per year… It’s mental. Especially if you want to grow a business
@ mate, I’ve just had my next tax bill… it’s a joke lol. I wouldn’t call my self an entrepreneur because I’m only running a small business. But I’ve been working for my self for the past 6 years or so.
I earn a six figure salary as I do consultancy work. Out of that I have to pay stupid amount of tax to the UK government and the Scottish government. At the end of it at least 50% of my salary has gone to both governments. I have attempted to set up businesses in the UK and unfortunately as Sol has mentioned, there is a lack of collaboration in the UK and there is limited resources. There are three countries in the world that would be the ideal place to open a business. Vietnam, Pakistan and Albania - these countries are pro business at the moment and are seeking investment because they want to grow their economy. Plus, it's super cheap to live in these three countries.
I feel like I have a curse placed on me to live in the uk. Why couldnt my family at least migrate to America or Australia, they have no idea and treat the uk like the best place in the world ffs and I know its not anymore. I noticed it was a silent dictatorship during me high school years way before all this Labour crap anyway.. or at least that it was gonna become one. I already knew it. God I cant wait to leave, this is why I am poor and I cant wait to start my business away from here. Good luck to you mate I wish yours the best
