He absolutely did, intentionally or otherwise. The seeds were planted and the growth potential was limitless to create a new batch of superstars. Then we got the flatline of an ending that transpired. Edge and Jericho were never going to be wrong, because that's what wisdom from growing within the business afforded them.

Edge highlighted an important point here: there is stuff that should be protected against kickouts so that when it happens and wrestlers kick out even after, such as a sledgehammer hit, or ddt on concrete, even finishers, it looks awesome. The problem with WWE is that this stuff happens too often nowadays, often on a weekly basis: people kicking out of finishers, steel chair shots etc. There is no "OMG WOW" factor anymore. Look at recent Lesnar/Goldberg/Reigns matches. If all you have in the match is a sequence of finishing moves, who is gonna care when the 19th spear is hit when people have kicked out of the previous 18?

If you have been watching prowresting for a while you know that when Jake the Snake DDT'ed Ricky Steamboat on concrete he was injured for weeks. He had to learn how to walk again.

Dude, THIS. This makes me feel good to hear someone from the actual wrestling world discuss this. That whole Cena VS the Nexus stuff was THEE moment within my adulthood where I generally lost interest in pro wrestling as a form of entertainment that I watch weekly. It's 2023 now and I dont know a thing about who's who. Luckily there is a community of fans of that kind in the wrestling world where we sit and talk about those eras and before and learn all the funny stories and crazy stuff behind the scenes. So in THAT sense, I am still a fan.
I remember when Nexus first attacked. I was stranded in Florida and my friends called me all excited to tell me some NWO like stuff went down 😂 I was mad for missing it, but I caught up maybe the end of that week. I was so excited to see them pushing newer guys but also, and this is VERY important, something OTHER than Cena. As a younger adult, I had been watching pretty much since like 89, or 1990. But to see whatever the next generation's "Hulk Hogan" is... and then seeking something more out of good guys and bad guys, made you realize how formulaic it all is. Same thing w hulk, and I was just another one of the millions of kids who just followed. So I get it- but John Cena just kept winning and winning and the more he won, the less they made ANYTHING on a wrestling show about anyone but John Cena LMAO
But to see him bury an idea that was pregnant with possibilities- It was just numbing. I dont even think I watched for a few weeks after that to see what the epilogue of the feud was. It was just THEE defining incident that made me fall off wrestling. Now I just like watching old Dean Malenko matches on RUclips lol.

Barrett explained in a great bit years ago how the finish was changed the day of the show and they went up to vince complaining and explaining why this shouldn’t happen. All he could say to them was that summerslam needed a happy ending.

Funny bc there was this vibe in the air at this time (2010) that there would be a new era emerging. That the Cena era needed to be cooled down to allow new blood come in ; Dolph, Cody, Zack Ryder (Cardona) , Drew Mcintyre. So when NEXUS came out, it was a fresh breath of air and people were so excited to get this attiude era esque direction in 2011. If you saw the original 2010 NXT, you saw that Husky Harris ( Bray), Daniel Bryant , Wade Barret had the it factor, these were Blue Chip recruits that were going to get big by 2018 if they were managed right. But just look at the CARLITO promo he had with Cena, about how Carlito said, its just not him who want Shaemus to win, its the whole locker room, that was what the forum fans were thinking.
So when CENA just kept on winning, and winning, and winning against the Nexus. You knew that the WWE was just pkng with the fans and letting them know that this was Vinces show and he wanted all the attiude era fans gone , and the PG ERA was here to stay.
Saltiest moment to be a fan. Then when the wwe tried to reboot the nexus with the Shield years later, and then do the same to those fans .. it was a pattern.
Suprisingly, it was CODY RHODES who was relugated to stardust at that time, that went on to spark the revolution of change. and Husky Harris became Bray Wyatt and Zack Ryder became Matt Cardona, and Mcintyre got a championship.
Cody forming a rival company forced the wwe to change & end the PG era.

Nothing could be further from the truth...but the ''kids that had to go home happy'' are now all grown and really did take over being the majority of WWE's fanbase alongside the current kids.

Cena was all that mattered at the time. Austins forced retirement probably played a part, Vince was never going to have Cena look weak and ruin riding the Cena train similar to how he wanted to non-stop push Austin in 2000 until he had to lower his ring time. Nexus we're created to make Cena look unbeatable, they weren't created to go over and run a long term heel faction. That's not to say he should have changed this when they got red hot, if course they should have gone over, and Barrett should have won the title and kept it a good 9 months to really sell the story, then have Barrett lose it and the group slowly loses desire and motivation for Barrett with Cena finally ending them. Barrett winning the belt at bragging rights would have reignited the storyline and Nexus, but they had Cena do what he did and then he became the invader. It was all about Cena, he's a piece of sh!t that spits on the business and breaks the 4th wall constantly,, his "how about heel turn" gag proves he's a scumbag on the business.

I don't know if the comparison to Shield really works here other than they both were groups that attacked people and overpowered them because of there was more of them. But Nexus was a group that consisted of a bunch of failed competitors on a show to find the next big star. They were intentionally embarrassed, looked down on, talked down to, referred to as rookies etc. for months and every single one of them except for the leader were losers. Basically the only reason they were a threat to anyone was because there were 8 of them. Whereas Shield was dangerous because of the specific people involved in it and their teamwork and chemistry and whatnot. Nobody ever referred to them as losers or rookies, they were treated as a dangerous threat from the very beginning. In comparison, Nexus was a group of people throwing a tantrum because they failed to become WWE superstars and Shield was three dangerous men looking to make it on their own, but together.

Now not only was Nexus still prominently featured for a few months after the feud (lots of burials result in stars doing just dark matches and house shows), but the Summerslam bout of established stars against new guys with no look and no gimmick could easily have been rectified. Literally have Nexus recruit some other low-standing guys and have more wreckings and backstage brawls the next night on RAW. Simple as that.

It's interesting how the perception of Cena has changed over the years. He ruled WWE for years and around 2013 the voice of people disliking this guy for winning every match became loud enough on the internet (some people had been disliking him from even before this).
Over the next few years the dissent against him grew and grew on the internet, often as he was compared to wrestlers like Daniel Bryan and Zack Ryder and Wade Barrett.
Cena then left in 2017. Then the WWE Universe was able to see a contrast. WWE was now pushing Roman Reigns the same way they had been pushing John Cena 7 or 8 years earlier. The difference, the fans saw, was that Cena actually had talent unlike this guy. That's why when Cena returned in August 2017 they cheered for him!! But he wasn't there to stay as he found a better calling at Hollywood. Now people miss him and they're like "You know what? He wasn't that bad!"
