Tarja is damnly special, an easter egg. As she said, in every album she sounds really different. Her voice changes so much and will keep changing. So she is not boring as most singers that keep the same voice or style singing over their entire career. She said she will be making music until her last breath so we still have so much time to enjoy her evolution. This video is just lame because is clearly looking for a fan-fight between NW's and Tarja's. You can tell that by noticing several video mistakes which tells you that it wasn't made carefully as any real value video and by looking at that 'or NOT'. So lame..

Hahaha... you Tarjaholics could only accept if someone praising her as a goddess without any mistake, while actually she is just a human with mistakes... In the otherwise, I accepted Tarja as a human, a talented singer, a great singer but still with mistakes... And that's what make her special...
O yeah, for your information, I am following her for a long time till today, I have all of her albums with Nightwish also I bought songs from her solos career which I like, and they are many...

As a fan, I have to say, she has a glorious voice! But it's clear her chest voice, along with the transitions need work. It is somewhat impressive that she's learning to use a different part of her voice considering all the years of training she put into her head/opera voice. It is hard to go back and forth, but she's working it!
I read a recent interview with her and she talked about how she would cry after a show if she felt she wasn't perfect vocally, but she has learned to let go and is now focused on having fun during her live shows. She is definitely having fun and experimenting with her sound more. Good for her. I've enjoyed her evolution of the years. :)

I think the way she sings the high Cs and C#s in Supremacy is intentional. Her voice got darker and when she's not singing classical she can sound a bit disconnected sometimes. But her lower range developed a lot and her mid belting too, and when she goes for a full classical sound she sounds exactly like she used to

Hmmm, depends on what she sings, her new, own material sounds quite awesome with head, chest voice or whatever, but EverDream and Phantom of the Opera do require that pure, steady and light way of singing. Tarja forever.

Love all versions of Tarja. You should note however that unlike her NW days Tarja does a lot of moving and jumping around these days. That affects breathing. And as for the Supremacy high note, it is just perfect with the tiny rasp. I believe that sound is what she aims for. I am sooooo enjoying the change she is incorporating these days.

Nice video with good examples. I'm glad you made this. I've been following her career since Nightwish, and I read a lot of comments about how her voice developed, and she keeps saying the same in interviews.
I'm no expert, but I personally like her voice most the way it was in Oceanborn times. I very much dislike her chest voice. A lot of the time it sounds like simply shouting or speaking. And I think she's gotten sloppier and sloppier over the years. Maybe it's her confidence that makes her more inclined to improvise live. In theory, that's perfectly fine and it's how live music should be, but on the other hand, when a singer is "improvising" in a way that they replace a long note they should be holding for a bit with just a spoken word, it seems lazy and like they just couldn't be bothered with it - simply bad, and I wouldn't call it an improvisation at all. I've noticed she does that more and more, and another vocalist I noticed that tends to do that is Simone.
In old Nightwish times, perhaps she didn't really try to improvise, but she sounded on point (at least most of the time, and of course that sometimes mistakes happen or she had been ill, and touring can be tough on the voice, so I've taken all that into account), and I find her head voice beautiful. Especially Phantom, in my opinion, should be sang in a head voice, since she can (used to be able to?) do it so beautifully (it's a different story if someone is intentionally covering it in a different technique).
Also, combining the head and chest voice, like in some examples here, and transitions between the two are sometimes sounding so off, and I think she goes back and forth to much. She switches between the two five times within the same line. To me it would sound better if she'd stuck to one for a bit longer, otherwise it just sounds inconsistent, like she can't make up her mind how to sing, especially since the difference in the sound is so massive. Sometimes her high notes (Supremacy) can sound like shrieking, and her vibrato like a dragged-out howl, especially towards the end. I wonder why that is.
I always thought she sounded more on point in her classical gigs. It's like she's decided no to mess about there or something. I realise this seems like a lot of criticism, but I'm not trying to bash her or anything, I just like a good discussion about music.

@@alexandracrowley3633 I ahem this also. I miss the Tarja's voice from 1998-2007. It's like she wants to sound more versitle (like say Floor) with chest voice and it doesn't work with her live vocals at all with her sounding flat, off-pitch and off-key.

    • @augustjoseph629
      @augustjoseph629 5 лет назад +7

Her vibrato in supremacy is definitely unnatural larnyx vibrato due to "pushing" -- and because it's not consistant (same, uniform speed throughout), it can be considered a "wobble".
I replied with similar sentiments in regard to what a fan said, which was, "I much prefer the new and improved Tarja." I disagreed. Also, I do think that she's becoming a parody of herself. That Tarja that used to strive for perfection seems to no longer exist. She seems to be getting sloppier with her vocals, slurring the pitches together, just speaking words. And that "weeping technique..." I can't erase that sound from my mind -- but I wish I could. Music shouldn't be filled with uncanny weeping. It's not something I can even remotely connect with.
And I agree with what you said about Simone Simons. I love her voice, I love the band, but she tends to perform less than desired live, unfortunately. I know for sure it is not because she can't, but because she doesnt want to.
In truth, I miss the old Tarja -- that light lyric sound. She hasn't sounded like that in a long, long time.

LO-fucking-L. 1). Tuomas and Tarja MADE Nightwish. They were equal partners, and made each other successful. He needed her, she wouldn't have necessarily, needed him to be successful. She could've easily had a career as a solo Lied singer if she had wanted, she chose not to, because she loved his music so much. [She wasn't titled "The Voice of Finland" at 24 years old for nothing.] Tuomas built Nightwish's entire sound around her, because he loved her voice so much. "It's not the tree who forsakes the flower, but the flower who forsakes the tree." 2). When you're a singer in a band, and you release an album with the Band, you have shared copyright to those songs. They didn't just pop out of mid-air. She helped bring them to Life, she's guaranteed copyright to sing them Live as a solo singer (so long as they don't sound 100% the same); because they're also hers. Notice, every song has a different layout than the original. Floor's the one whose riding Tarja's coat tails more than anything.

i think , Tarja is singing more emotionally , because she is losing range. When your voice is stable , even in a more operatic way , your voice flow is better. She is making , obvious and very well known , tricks , to hide years of lack of mezzo opera training after leaving nightwish. Nice vid, you make very interesting points. I think it is actually a good thing that she is shifting into other ways of singing. I thinks it contributes to her being more versatil as a metal singer and heavily improoves her vocalization and the emotion she puts in her performance. When Floor got into Nightwish one of the things I loved was her versatility, being able to sing very operatic but not using this style all the time but keeping it more natural and very emotional and then building up to it for a better effect. When I´ve shown people who don't know about Nightwish a comparisson between singers they've all prefered Flor over Tarja and sometimes (surprisingly) even Annete over Tarja entirely based on emotional conveyance and vocalization, since it becomes to put it simple "easier to digest" and to comprehend. I hold Tarja in high regards as a singer, I even have some of her solo songs in my playlists, but I've always thought she lacked some versatility and emotion in her singing and if this is the case then it is a good thing.

She's been trying to change the way she sings for a more popular approach since Century Child and I think it's gone downhill since then. She sounds good in End of an Era but much better in From Wishes to Eternity. I get why she would do that, though. Nightwish was changing it's direction to a more popular sound, as is Tarja's solo carreer. This kind of music may sound very awkward with classical technique (take Tarja's awful cover of Smells Like Teen Spirit for example). But it can be very hard for a classicaly trained singer to make this transition to pop and she is definetely struggling. Her chest voice is plain ugly and her singing now lacks a lot of control. Maybe she'll get it right someday but I think she's getting worse and worse. I can't bear to hear her singing live nowadays, unfortunately.

    • @marijanaprica7041

I was also disappointed with End of an Era. It was good, but IMO too much weird dancing, squealing and whining in her voice. I have expected something different, since her voice in From Whishes to Eternity was amazing. She progressed technically, but it didn't match with NW anymore. There are things that she have lost in her training, and things that she gained. It is her right to develop in whatever direction she wants with her technique. I personally don't like her live singing since Once album. With "new" Tarja, I don't like the sound of NW songs. But I enjoy listening to her singing new songs though, they fit her new voice. The voice that sung NW first few albums is the one that enchanted me, so... For me that was magical. From Wishes to Eternity is still the best recorded live performance of Tarja Turunen, taking in calculation the singing, stage presence, and attitude. At least for me.

My Theory is that the pregancy and that she is getting older is the reason, for her vocal development. Maybe the freedom of her solo career is also a factor for this. All in all i loved Tarja back in the days between Oceanborn and Once, even though i haven't seen her live in this time, what i really would have loved. If i had a time machine if would travel to back to the End Of An Era concert and make Tarja's voice last forever. Her solo career albums have for me always the mixture of strange songs i really don't like after many listenings, but all in all she is doing well. Furthermore i think the fans should be happy that she still covers songs of Nightwish, whether we like them or not.

Too be honest, some of the old songs, like Ever Dream, I prefer the old version, but I never liked the song very much anyway.
As a singer you develop and work on your voice and its ever changing, and frankly, its old songs she is just having fun with, I dont take the NW songs seriously when she sings them. If you could compare Tarja singing new songs with the voice she has now, with the one she had in NW, she couldnt do it.
You also are using bootleg/amateur filmed material when there is obviously better choices to be made, its rare that she fails a tone like that in Phantom of the Opera. She failed far more often with NW then currently.
I prefer the new improved Tarja, she has more flexibility and is clearly improved. You compare pretty much everything with End of an Era which clearly has backing vocals and they have worked our to get the finest details, alot that NW do, in the studio, to perfection so it doesnt sound real. While Tarja is nowdays more raw, better and has better sustainability. Sure she has misshaps, fails sometimes or pronounce words wrong? (Like that is something to consider, which you are..ridiculous.) But she has clearly improved.

    • @augustjoseph629
      @augustjoseph629 5 лет назад +5

I disagree. I believe her technique is far more flawed now than ever. Her voice used to smooth like butter, but dark like the night sky. Now, it's not as evenly balanced, her registers don't always mix properly, and she's pushing to get a bigger sound -- overall, she is damaging her voice. Also, it seems likes she's unnaturally depressing her larynx, which is making her voice seem exremely inauthentic. Singing classically, a lowered, relaxed larnyx can produce *very* resonant and loud sounds, without the use of extreme effort. She used to be able to do this -- End of an Era is proof.
But now, it seems she is uncertain of the type of singing she wants to achieve, and her music now just lacks the listenability that was present before. It's uninspired, bland, and sometimes just obnoxious.
Don't get me wrong, I believe she is a great artist, and I understand that all of these things she does are stylistic-technical changes, but she... She's lost that beautiful melodic inspiration, that music that is beautiful, painful, and powerful. Now, she's just messing around hoping someone will enjoy her music, but I don't think even she connects to it anymore. How could we?

@ She isn't an opera singer because she needs a microphone. She's a classical crossover singer who sings symphonic metal. There are plenty of classically trained singers who can sing in a so-called contempary style: Sarah Brigman, Alison Goldfrapp, Lara Fabain, etc. and they have a better and more developed chest voice than Tarja does.

    •  5 лет назад +2

@@Rock-Metal91 Tarja is a 100% classical singer specialised in lyrical singing, which could be called ''opera'' in a more general perspective ... even if there are some differences between classical and actual opera both are actualy very similar. She does not need a microphone under circumstances that do not involved amplified electric guitars and a huge stadium.I do not know Alison enough but I know enough about Lara Fabian and Sarah to know that their chest register are far less develloped.Lara is forced to go into a whisper-ish tone with alot less power in low and middle chest, and it is even more true for Sarah... Tarja's chest (low chest, middle chest and high chest) notes are full , projected and sustained. We could also talk about the mix (Overdrive) register, which Tarja also dominates with a sustain up to Eb6.For the head voice I got to give it to Sarah tho.
Classical singing involves both contemporary and the older form of singing which Tarja uses.I will not go too far on this subject since my knowledges kinda stops there.

@ Lara has a stronger more developed lower register and chest voice than Tarja (i.e. her cover of Whitney Houston's I Will Always Love You). It is more projected and has bigger volume. Tarja's while good just sounds odd to me, like it's uncontrolled and her accent (while I'm not dissing it) annoys the hell out of me.
Alison Goldfrapp is the vocalist for British electronica duo Goldfrapp. She is considered a Soprano sfogato, which is essentially a Soprano voice with a Contralto tessitura.

From 3:54 to 3:57, you said that she has problems holding the E6 (it's not Eb6), but what is the problem here?
I think she's still good with that. Holding the 6th octave head voice is not quite easy, but she's a soprano - the highest voice of opera

Wow. After Nightwish I was worried for a while there. It seemed like she was getting bad tone.
But seeing this progression she definitely improved and regained tone.
And definitely an improvement to chest voice and non classical singing. And you can see she is enjoying it.
You also have to remember she is getting older and these performances can be very demanding which can explain many things on her questionable tone for a little while... Especially trying to constantly stay in quality head voice. And in her straining a little more on very high and powerful notes or belts. Those are not easy things to do in Rock performances even for the well trained and young.
She's doing fabulous. And her classical technique is damn near close to what it was then while gaining so much more.
And in lighter performances or off stage might be the same or better

Personally his voice does not deteriorate, and I think the video could have shown his early evolution of his career to now

well, you should see how nasty and belligerent people who attack Tarja can be.... i am a Tarja-holic but there is no denying how talented Floor is as well as Simone from Epica...but its plain to see that, although her stage presence is as magnificent as ever, how her vocal approach has progressively changed over the years from a fabulous mixture of classical and metallic intonation to, with a few very notable exceptions, almost pop sound on most songs and sweet, warm cuddly, but nearly nuance-free on ballads.....her recent rendition of dead boy's poem , in which she introduced a classical, nuanced touch though, was just beautiful...so if you look at it rationally some of what people say regarding the changes they observe in the Floor are justified...

faif full3 man, Floor was praised by most metal fans (even Tarjaholics) before she joined Nightwish. She was considered probably the best female metal vocalist because of her skills in both operatic and metal styles of singing. After Forever and Revamp were two of the best projects but never gained the traction they needed after Mark left AF and Floor burned out. Ever since she joined NW, the hate was NONSTOP from Tarjaholics, which sucks, because without Floor, we’d have a generic voice playing with Nightwish. Calling her a fat lesbian, a hog and a giant whore like I’ve seen in some videos is truly disgusting. Of course Floor’s fans are going to retaliate. There is enough room for both of them in Metal. Heck, they’re friends. Lol

I simply prefer Nightwish Tarja. But she's still great on her own career, but I like her NW era voice and technique more. She did 6th octave high notes like it was nothing but now they aren't that good. She just can't reach Eb 6 anymore. I have no problem with her chest voice, other than the darkness of it. But this is just my opinion, don't hate, respect others.

I would prefer if she would sound more uniformly, especially in notes like f4-a4 in songs like "Nemo" or "Until My Last Breath". And I hate her quacking sounds that she likes to make live, especially with "a" sound. I even haven't been listening to her during few years because of that reasons. But also I don't like her singing in early NW albums, because it sounded too unfree, as if she tried to sing as correct and classic, as possible. I think, the most perfect combination would be if she would sing a bit more accurate preserving her new freedom on the stage

She is trying to keep up with singers like Floor Jansen and Diane from Xandria, who are extremely popular nowadays due to their versatile vocals and ability to switch from operatic to other styles of singing. But it doesn't suit her, she sounds so vulgar. Her time is over, now almost every band has a classically trained singer, and there is nothing to make her special. She is returning to bel canto, because she realised that verismo is damaging her voice, because the modern opera schooling teaches singers to push, to strugle, and that ruins her voices. She has improved her light voice technique, she is not as operatic as she used to because everybody criticized her for being too lyrical and not having a chest pop voice ...
She does it now, and everybody criticises her for not being lyrical all the time ..
    She is better now.

In my humble opinion, I would never classify Tarja as a Soprano. Her voice has a lot of amplitude, this allows her to sing in many ways, but I realize that she has more intimacy with the low and middle notes (voice center). Also her voice is very strong and even in interviews you can see that the endings of her sentences sound low. I know Tarja considers herself a Soprano, maybe she has been trained that way because she likes more this kind of voice. This happened with Soprano Kiri Te Kawana, who was originally a Mezzo-Soprano, but decided to be Soprano by choice, then went on to train to be Soprano.

Admit, Tarja is older. That means shows exhaust her more easily (not that she's worse). Also, she moves more and changed her style. In the NW clips she always want to sing perfectly, while in her solo works she just enjoys herself. Maybe she doesn't practice that much these days. Voice also gets darker with age. And I think her operatic voice got a lot better and a lot more expressive, with perfect technique.

My simple opinion: Tarja's talent has been decaying. Some well trained vocalist sometimes needs a vocal coach. Most of the examples shown above in the video doesn't seems to be a technique failure but the missused of circumstances. For example, a "weak" falsetto eb6 in a mourning emotion lyric is very powerful, but in Phantom of the Opera; since vocal mission is to enhance the inner beauty of the Phantom, a clean, ultra feminine head voice e6 is required.
Again, in my opinion, Tarja needs a great coach to deeply set a vocal/emotional technique plan and to see if she can really seek out more vocal flexibility. Just my opinion...
But who cares! Tarja is the pioneer of the classical and bel canto fusion in metal scene. Thanks to her there are tons of vocaly talented woman being heard in metal scene, there is even a subgenre thanks to her. She placed an important line in music history in which lead front woman bands are being admired for beauty and talent. She's like the Britney Spears of metal.

It's ironic that back in the days Tarja insisted on being an opera singer, just doing that "weird metal stuff" on the side, proudly graduated as a professional opera diva...then *go figure* proceeded to ride the wave of symphonic metal and sing in a catastrophic patchwork of styles that she's apparently still "learning" after 15 years. Floor is another thing entirely, she was always at home in the metal scene and developed steadily and consistently.
