Fun detail - in the song "Hellfire," Frollo spends the entire song denying responsibility for his sins, blaming Esmeralda, the devil, etc. Meanwhile, the chorus is singing in response the lines from the Confiteor, a prayer during the Catholic Mass in which you acknowledge your sins. As Frollo sings "It's not my fault / I'm not to blame," the response from the chorus is "Mea culpa / Mea culpa / Mea maxima culpa," which translates to "through my fault, through my fault, through my most grievous fault." The film and its score are absolutely bursting with extra meaning if you either know Latin or, more particularly, are familiar with Catholicism. The recurring motif of "Kyrie eleison," which appears throughout the musical score, means "Lord have mercy" in Greek and is part of the Catholic Mass.

Also, another fun fact. Hellfire was such an amazing Disney villain song that no other Disney film, at least theatrically(so although I rock with My Lullaby from Lion King 2, it doesn't count), had a villain song until the Princess and the Frog.

There are two theories as to why Frollo saw the gargoyle coming to life:
1: gargoyles are protectors against demons and evil spirits, and Frollo's soul had been fully corrupted to the point where the gargoyle saw him as a demon.
    Or
2: It was Satan claiming Frollo's soul after 20 years of waiting for Frollo to squander away his chance of redemption granted to him by God through the Archdeacon.

I like the first one better, because you're right about the gargoyles. They send fear into demons and evil spirit. So when Frollo looked into its eyes in his last moments he was filled with the fear of Gods judgment.

  • @kristianbanks6450
    @kristianbanks6450 4 месяца назад +67

Also a cool detail is that during the end of hellfire, the solder who told Frollo that Esmeralda had escaped was basked in an heavenly blue and white light while Frollo was in the hellish red and orange light.
This symbolizes that God gave Frollo a chance to do the right thing and let Esmeralda go, but Frollo refused and gave into his sins as he turned towards the fire, implying that he’s made his final choice and that he is going to hell.

This movie is one of those that you don't like very much as a kid but now have a newfound appreciation for it as an adult. I definitely considered it one of the best Disney movies ever made along with Beauty and The Beast and The Lion King. Quasimodo is such a likable character, he's like an angel trapped in a demon's body. The phrase "Who is the monster and who is the man" still got me. At the beginning we're led to believe that Quasi is the monster and Frollo is the man, but at the end it's a complete reversal, Frollo is the true monster and Quasi is the man. What an underrated masterpiece.

Hunchback is probably the darkest Disney movie I've ever seen. Fun fact, in the original book Frollo was archdeacon, not minister of justice like he is in the film. Also, a couple of years before the film came out, there were various incidents of police breaking down doors into churches to discover illegal immigrants hiding in there, and a lot of French moviegoers were reminded of that when watching the film

This was back when Disney was pushing boundaries with their movies. This was almost on Dreamworks' level of subject material with the religious ruling, the sexual connotations, the persecution of the Gypsies (yes I know this is a slur, but I don't know the better word currently). Also, I don't know if you noticed, but Quasimodo and Frollo's relationship was similar to that of Rapunzel and her so-called mother in Tangled. This was the 90s version of that.

It's interesting how they examined perceptions with this film.
Frollo sees things only In absolutes and thus when he's confronted by someone he reviles as desirable, he becomes obsessed with the feeling, even in opposition to self image as a man of god.
Quasi is innocent and sheltered so when Esmeralda shows him kindness he inadvertently puts on a pedestal, not seeing her more sultry aspects, until much later.
But Phoebus, he's worldly enough thst he sees both sides of her, accepting her as a whole. Thus he and her fall in love, while Quasi grows out of his limited perception to understand her as a friend. It's only the corrupt, and self righteous, Frollo who fails to learn and is destroyed by his own unseen sins.

Some fun facts about mediaevel europe:
    - The average farming peasant had more days off than most people today, because the harvest didn't need constant tending to.
    - Women usually brewed ale and ran taverns (or 'alehouses'), until the early modern Era rolled around.
    - Armour wasn't really clunky and heavy. It's weight was specifically spread around to make it easier for the wearer to fight.
    - Jesters were often advisors to the Monarchs, and even Assassins!
    - It didn't really get that dirty and disgusting until the early modern era, where towns and cities became more populated.
    - Animals could be tried and convicted of crimes. No, really!
    - The Knights Templar was destroyed because certain rulers (especially the French king) Owed them money!

They really went for it with this one and I totally respect that. If you’re looking for other animated films, all of the early 90’s ones are great. The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin and the Lion King. And if you haven’t seen them, the original classics are worth watching too. Snow White just for the history. The first ever full length animated film. Everyone told Disney he was insane but he did it anyway. Cinderella and Pinocchio too. And Fantasia, although that one is a little bit of a love it or hate it kind of movie because it’s just a really artistic piece of cinema but it doesn’t really have much of a story at all. Also the early Pixar stuff is all outstanding. Toy Story, Monster’s Inc., Finding Nemo, The Incredibles, and Cars are all top-tier Disney.

This is by far one of Disney's darkest films and one that I enjoyed as a kid, and then have found a new appreciation for as an adult, especially after 5 semesters of Latin in college. Frollo is also one of the darkest Disney villains and unlike previous villains that were evilf or the fun or sake of being evil, Frollo truly believes himself to be good, that all his actions, no matter how wicked or unforgivable, serve the will of God. Thus his clashes with the Archdeacon represents the difference between those who claim to be men of God and actual Men of the Cloth.

Other fun factoids: when Frollo offers twenty pieces of silver for Esmeralda, it's the same price Jesus is betrayed for in the New Testament. The Court of Miracles sequence is one of the closest to the book in this whole adaptation ... and the molten metal pouring down the gargoyle spouts was actually part of the original book! As is the weird ... interest in the goat Djali. And then the name Esmeralda itself was related to alchemy, as in the book, Frollo was a very learned alchemist who was secretly training the King of France in alchemy.

I thought this when I saw it as kid. I asked my mother why she went with Phoebus. My mother tried to explain it as "nice" as possible... though I had an older brother and older sister. I was the youngest of 3. My older sister simply said "It's cause he's ugly."

You should watch te 1990s movie Huncback with Mandy Patinkin and Salma Hayek (young Salma is super hot Esmerelda - perfect actress for the job). Even though it's low budget, the acting was very good and it was pretty faithful to the source. Very good.

Disney usually has fantastical villains, like Ursula and Dr. Facilier, who use magic, and Scar, who is a power-hungry usurper of power. But Frollo is on a different level; he's a corrupt politician who uses his power to persecute the innocent based on his own religious beliefs, while using those same beliefs as a crutch to justify his actions; he's a predator who lusts after a much younger woman and has the gall to blame HER for his feelings. How many times have you actually seen people like that compared to the former?
It's been said many times by many people, but I'll say it again: Frollo is such a terrifying villain because he is so REALISTIC; people like him exist in the real world, past, present and future.

Hunchback might not be the objective best Disney movie, but it is hands-down my favorite. The characters are great, the animation is stellar and the soundtrack is actually Disney’s best imo
