Frollo is one of the most despicable Disney villains ever. Hellfire however is one of the best Disney villain songs ever
I agree 💯
So real ❤😂❤😂
Totally agree
Correction: The, not one of the.
Disney would NEVER have the guts to pull off a movie and villain like this again
No one would.
To be fair, Mothel Gothel came out in 2010, but yeah. Old Disney wasn’t afraid to go dark themes back then
@@mckenzie.latham91 Plenty of movies and shows have had despicable villains more evil than Frollo, however, in Disney terms, ye, there aren't a lot of villains like Frollo
@@bluewolf6323 No animation studio or etc has ever had the guts to do a character like Frollo with that level of exploration in terms of his lust and “moral” struggle
no one can do a frollow because of the “sex is bad” thing.
Nowadays, they'd put extra work into humanizing that Disney villain to rationalize their motives
"Hellfire" is one of if not the best villain song ever, and Frollo is one of Disney's scariest villains because of how real he is. Tony Jay voiced him to perfection
Without a doubt, Tony Jay’s presence in Disney animated projects are notable.
Disney has great music
I long for the days when Disney took wild swings like this one.
When it does, we'd be eating GOOD
Gargoyles, while primarily functional as architectural water spouts, have been imbued with symbolic meaning and are often associated with guardianship and warding off evil spirits.
In essence, the idea of gargoyles as guardians is more symbolic than literal. While they were not intended to physically protect a building in the way a guard might, their grotesque appearance was believed to ward off evil spirits and provide a sense of protection.
18:38 obviously not. He doesn’t know what love is. Lust and obsession are completely different things. If she doesn’t do everything he wants, he’ll kill her.
💯!!
I just realized something a little insidious about the music of this movie; every time Quasimodo gets a song, it’s inextricably tied to a song from Frollo. Heaven’s Light is the preamble to Hellfire, Out There starts with a bit of singing conversation from Frollo, and I don’t think Quasimodo sings anymore songs after that. It just shows how dependent Frollo has made Quasimodo, it’s a musical example of Frollo’s control.
That’s scary, especially as the child of an abusive parent
This is my fave Disney movie and I never noticed before. Very cool, nice catch!
“So this movie has songs, okay.”
Welcome to Disney. 😂
In the stage musical version (where the film's creators got more creative freedom from the studio) the gargoyles (and saints) are explicilty just in Quasi's head.
Also (spoilers).....
....Esmeralda does die there at the end and Quasi straight up kills Frollo in retribution, throwing him from the cathedral himself while Frollo begs for mercy.
“You don’t want to hurt me!”
“Yes, you do…”
1:25 it’s funny you say that because in the book Quasimodo was deaf.
Just about to comment that but yeah! It makes sense for him to be deaf as a bell ringer with massive bells to tend to 😂
Something about this movie that gets looked over a lot is every main male character wants Esmeralda. No matter what she does or how she acts, even just being friendly/kind to Quasimodo, she instantly becomes someone they want a romantic relationship with. It sticks out to me more as an adult and makes me feel sorry for her. Even at the end when Quasimodo gives his “blessing”, he never had a blessing to give, she doesn’t belong to him, she could do or be with whoever she wanted without his approval.
I always saw it more as him realizing she Dosent owe him her love, nore can he “imprison” her in a relationship with him so to speak, like frollo
He let her go, and gestured that there where no heard feelings
He’s not being down on himself like he was before ether
Just expressing that phebus and her clearly like eachothers a lot, so they should go for it, and not worry about him, it’s HER life
Not necessarily with Quasimodo imo. He was just grateful for her friendship after being publicly humiliated and scorned at the festival, but I think he also thought having a romance was his only chance to be truly happy. A lot of people go into relationships believing it will provide happiness or fill a void in themselves, only to realize romance isn’t the answer to their problems. Personally I am not a fan of Phoebus and Esmerelda as a couple, largely because their relationship always felt pretty rushed and a bit forced, especially in comparison to other Disney romances at the time which got so much more time to flesh out their dynamics and why those couples fell in love. But I can appreciate that Phoebus always treated her as a person and her people as equals and disagreed with Frollo’s prejudices from the beginning and she admired his courage to disobey Frollo’s orders and even refused to burn an innocent family to death. Still wish Quasi got Esmerelda’s love, but I kinda think Madeline from the sequel was a much better fit for Quasi
That's kind of unfair to Quasi. His blessing was more him realizing he loves her enough to want her to be happy even if it wasn't with him. He was letting her go in his heart so he could still be around her without it hurting. It's actually a very mature and selfless thing to do because he's literally putting her happiness first. That's not something someone who thinks they own or are entitled to someone else does.
It's not overlooked. It's been stated on every reactions comment section
"Gypsy" is an interesting word, it is considered a slur in nearly all languages and cultures EXCEPT Spanish, (only being insulting depending on the tone it's spoken, and the context it is used eg. "Oh, he's Carlos, he's gypsy" or "Those 𝘨𝘺𝘱𝘴𝘪𝘦𝘴 always causing trouble!")
And some Romani American people, who decided to use the word almost interchangeably with "Romani" (one of ethnic groups that form the Traveller peoples).
I love your reaction!
Yeah for a very long time Gypsy wasn’t seen as a ‘bad’ word in America at all, hence its use in the Disney movie. It’s only fairly recently with online culture that people have decided it’s bad.
@@Isilranna So it is a bad word and has always been, but it has not been put under scrutiny, because it was normalized, much like the N-word. One can argue that it was "normal" to use it, but is still a harmful word. It has been used to marginalize the Romani people by making it synonymous with "thief". The word was created because people thought the Romani people came from Egypt, (they are actually from India) and the racism of these people have persisted, even to this day. Have you ever heard of the word "Jipped", which tends to mean, cheated or ripped off. It is from the word "Gypsy", because people viewed them as thieves and con artists.
One of the darkest Disney animated films ever produced: The Hunchback of Notre Dame!
The voices of Amadeus star Tom Hulce as Quasimodo alongside costars Demi Moore as Esmeralda and Kevin Kline as Phoebus are really notable! It’s one of my favorite films at the Mouse House itself.
I love this movie so much, it's such an emotional rollercoaster for me. My cousins show this to new members of the family bc of it's life lesson/moral of the story. They learned a lot from it! It's a beautiful masterpiece indeed ❤
If you want to watch another masterpiece watch Prince of Egypt by Dreamworks (1998). It is about the Biblical story of Moses but even non believers can enjoy it. Stunning animation, the music is AMAZING, bittersweet story and difficult relationships…
@scootx The word Gypsy originates as short form for Egyptian because back in the Middle Ages it was widely believed that the Romani people came from Egypt and not Pakistan/India. I believe it’s considered a slur because the term ‘Gypsy’ holds a lot of negative connotations of being a thief, spy, black magic user, etc… Basically they were given a name they didn’t ask for.
Glad your watching this masterpiece
Gypsies is a slur for romani people, however its so commonly used most people don't realise it is one. And old-school Disney definitely wasn't keeping track of things like that
Mother gothel has nothing on Frodo being the grand Master of gaslighting.
At least gothel has the nerve to be in the middle of nowhere away from people. Frodo got quasi afraid to go outside in the middle of the city
18:38 ‘so does he love he?’ Oh sweet summer child. That’s lust.
Best Villain ever, best villain song ever no contest. What makes Frollo specifically so horrifying. Is out of all the Villains in Disney, he is the most realistic. He isn't just haha kill murder burn. He has his own twisted reasons for it which are very similar to people throughout history that caused turmoil. Such a mature movie which I kinda wish some parts of it got cut or replaced to keep that maturity intact as some parts felt more silly then the obvious dark story that is presented. none the less Frollo is PEAK. The most disgusting vile man in Disney history apart from the owners and ceos of the company but like. when it comes to being evil you can't beat the rich and powerful in that game
This movie is already a masterpiece! I only wished they leaned harder into the Gargoyles being in Quasimodo's head. It makes some of their more poignant moments hit a LOT harder!
Frollo was from a time when Disney villains where allowed too be EVIL. Him, Scar, Ursula, Gaston and Hook... They where just evil, and so freaking great at it.
Ahh I'm so happy you reacted to this! I knew it would surprise you lol
Hellfire is probably my favorite disney song because of how effed up it is. also the THIRST for Clopin (the guy who sings who is masked) is so.. real XD
WHOOO wasn’t expecting this!!! What a treat
My favorite Disney movie ever. "Oh there's songs in this" and it's only the greatest soundtrack in Disney's catalog (in my opinion).
People will often point at Beauty & the Beast regarding Stockholm Syndrome but I find that so inaccurate. This movie and Tangled are phenomenal examples of it and show that it isn't just based in romantic love, but in these guardianship relationships where there is so much manipulation and forced dependence.
Ah, yes, one of Disney's best and the darkest, the darkest villain, Darkest song, and best religious song. Religious song ties with " When You Believe" from The Prince of Egypt. And as for the darkest songs in animation at least. The only other two that I can think of other than Hellfire is "savages: from Pocahontas. And "in the dark of the night" from Anastasia. Though in my personal opinion those two only run second to Hellfire
If you're gonna watch any Disney sequel, watch Cinderella 3. And no, you don't need to watch Cinderella 2 first.
I love that the French are historically known for not being down for bullshit
I love that Frollos demise is showing him being thrown into hell. As by his own last words. Since the ground is drawn a bit more abstract it looks like he falls into lava or something and that messed up smile with the glowing eyes..
I think Frolo has one of the best Disney villain deaths, cause he literally falls into a representation of hell and falls into a lake of Molten Lead or copper like the terminator out of terminator 2 judgement day
1:39 it is, it’s a racial slur
idk all the gipsy people I know are okay with it being used on them tbh
Frollo is one of the most realistic villains. Because there are people out there who like him.
One thing I hate is that Frollo wasn't initially wrong about the outside world's reaction to Quasimodo. Even today people react that way to people who are different whether the differences are physical, mental or environmental (like homelessness or just being poor)
Quasimodo, a (forced) loner for his entire life, is better than all those internet incels who complain about "friendzone" everytime. I like the finale choice: he accepts she doesn't like him but they still keep the friendship, helping each other
I cannot believe we were just out here watching this as kids.. like WHAT!?😂
Hunchback of Notre dame is one of my favorite Disney movies. I don’t see Disney making another movie like this. 1:25 In the Original story Quasimodo was deaf. 1:38 It’s a Bad word it’s a Slur for Romani People. 15:49 Same.
If you want to see an even darker version, I recommend checking out the stage musical version. Its sad.
I always thought that that gargoyles were possessed by his guardian angels, and they move when he needed them most or to keep him company
Scoot if you're at another mlp convention we gotta meet up and talk not just about mlp but Hunchback of Notre Dame for it's one of my top 5 favorite Disney movies and I'm glad you finally got to see it.
The stuff that Quasimoto dumps on the guards is probably molten Lead or copper
If you ever get the chance to see the stage musical, please go. It’s beautiful.
9:23 esmeralda doing the splits and winking made my man feel some type of way 😂
If disney had a main villain it would be him 100%
To this day Quasi singing "out there" just makes me tear up 😢
I dread the day disney makes a live action out of this one. This movie is amazing.
This is one of my favorite Disney movies, the music is also fucking amazing
Gypsy is an old and VERY offensive word for the Romani people, a culture from the Indian Subcontinent who are traditionally nomadic, traditionally travelling in elaborately painted wooden carriages (the so called Gypsy Caravans). The term was originally referring to an old rumour that they originated from Egypt. They've pretty much been persecuted and oppressed throughout all of history for being nomads who just kinda come and go as they wish and would often be forbidden from having respectable jobs, causing many to turn to street performing and fortune telling to earn a living (giving us the stereotype of the Gypsy Fortune Teller). Even though they've rejected the term for centuries, and even officially declared the term to be a slur in the 70s, people still use the term Gypsy because, well, they're still an oppressed and persecuted minority to this day and people just don't wanna listen to them
Thanks for the quick history lesson, Professor.
That's a very one sided outlook though.
Disney movies don't really have this passion these days.
Crazy ass shit to upload now when I was just thinking about you watching this earlier today!
Hunchback of Notre Dame and Hercules and Tarzan and Mulan were my favourite Disney films growing up and still are my favourite Disney films now
He's without a doubt the scariest villain in Disney's history. I'd put the villain from Mulan second probably.
Walt Disney movie starting with Snow White have always ended villains. Usually they let gravity do it so the hero doesn't have to. Scar, the evil queen, Clayton, gravity ended them all.
Scar got eaten by the Hyenas but fair for the rest of them. Also, Mother Gothel, though depending on who you ask Pascal may have helped a bit. 😂
Actually Old disney had a great track of allowing the villains to be their own undoing, having their obsession and hatred drive them to cause their own demise
gaston stabbing the beast rather then fleeing the castle
Scar throwing the hyenas under the bus to save himself, turning them against him
Clayton going crazy to kill Tarzan and cutting his own vine hanging himself
Jafar mocking Aladdin while Iago kicks his lamp into lava
Frill trying to kill esmerelda and quasimodo and losing his balance/falling into his own lake of fire
You have to do Prince of Egypt next!
Click fast asf to get here i love this movie
At 1:38, to my knowledge it is considered a slur nowadays, though I don’t think too many people know that, so it’s still pretty common to hear nowadays, and this movie is from the 90’s where it was even less so. (Though if I’ve got anything wrong then feel free to let me know!😁)
thanks for reacting
The Latin chanting during the Hellfire sequence is relevant to the subject matter of the song. You should check that out!
Check out the second one!! It’s sweet! Obviously not a masterpiece piece like the first but I think it’s worth seeing
Hellfire is one of the top songs of Disney😊😊😊
This is a movie that I wouldn't mind being turned into live action because I am curious who they would cast
A live action is in development.
Only after they replace every single person in charge of putting these live action remakes together
9:37 🎵Topsy-Scoot🎵
This movie has my heart and soul.
Also the original story is even darker
This is my favorite Disney movie! A close second is Hercules but nothing tops this one❤❤❤❤
Yes!!! I did not know I needed this reaction in my life! The Hunchback of Notre Dome is amazing! Never truly appreciated it as a kid cause I never fully understood what was going on, but as a teen it really hit.
Edit: There is a Notre Dome 2, but it's obviously not as good as the first. But Quasi gets a love interest followed by more musical masterpieces.
Producer Don Hahn stated the gargoyles are from Quasi's imagination)
Regarding the gargoyles. There was a tv show previously that came out before this CALLED Gargoyles that Disney made where the gargoyles would come to life. I think this is capitalizing off that show and leaving it up to interpretation. Then again there was a sequel to this movie that goes off of Quasimoto's imagination
This is the best Disney movie, but that show is the best Disney show! Lol. He should totally watch Gargoyles omg, and yes my icon is from Gargoyles, it’s literally my favorite thing
Clayton got killed in Tarzan, it was a pretty intense scene for a Disney movie!
Frollo doesn’t love Esmeralda he Lusts for her
Hi Scoot! Can you pls react to the great gastby the musical songs? Specifically Only Tea, New Money, Roaring on and My Green Light?
1:37 yeah, here in America it's generally regarded as a derogatory term. This movie's pretty old
What a film
I do think it’s worth noting that this is originally a 500 pg book written in 1831 by the same dude who wrote les miserables (literally “the miserables”) so the dark tone and themes aren’t *entirely* disneys doing, and it’s sanitized a LOT
it’s kinda misleading to think the writers just decided to write this all on their own for a disney movie, but the exact plot is very different (obviously considering it’s 500 pages lmao)
it’s a fantastic adaptation geared to families, but they had pretty fantastic source material to pull from
26:11 Esmeralda She Spits On Judge Frollo's Face
26:09 Choose Him Or The Fire ❤️🖤💜🔥
6:39 - …If you only new! 😅😢
You should watch the Disney show Gargoyles! It’s also deep, dark, and awesome
He should watch “The Brothers Grimm” it’s a darker movie that’s kind of hard to describe…
I've been waiting for this.
if you like this movie then u will love 'Prince Of Egypt'!! its by dreamworks, the animation is kinda dated but the backdrops and songs are so fire
Sorry for the off-topic comment Scoot, but I have a recommendation. Do you suppose you could react to the movie "Edward Scissorhands" someday?
If you think Disney is dark. You haven't seen dark until you've seen where Disney has gotten their inspirations from or ideas. Since it started with the Grim brother's tales from long ago. Now that's dark. Look it up if you don't believe me. There are many tales about the Grims brother's books that Disney took off as a spinoff of their work. or so I have read.
There’s definitely a handful of old stories Disney adapted for their animated films, so yeah. Disney has gone dark even during Walt’s lifetime.
YYEEESSSS BANGER MOVIE
Judge claude frollo is my favorite disney villain
You've never seen this? Awesome movie!
There's a few different gruesome villain deaths within Disney
Snow White - Evil Queen - fell from a cliff
Sleeping Beauty - Maleficent - sword to the heart
Little Mermaid - Ursula - stabbed in the heart with a ship
Beauty & the Beast - Gaston - falls from the palace, potentially has his own dagger fall on him
Lion King - Scar - attacked by hyenas
Tarzan - Clayton - falls from the vines and gets tangled/hanged in them
The Princess and the Frog - Facilier - dragged alive by spirits into Hell
Tangled - Mother Gothel - disintegrated into dust by rapid aging as she falls from the tower
That said. I personally wouldn't watch the sequel. It's Disney Toon studios, not Walt Disney Animation, so the quality is lacking. The animation style is very different, the music doesn't match this movie. If you want a cute story, go for it, but I think the quality dip is what makes it so disappointing, because this movie is so powerful and I feel like the sequel is very simple and doesn't challenge the audience in the way this one does.
YEESSS ONE OF MY FAVS
You should react to The Road to El Dorado next if you haven't!
Man the word consternation and actual latin was used in songs in this movie and nowadays we get "Watch out world, here you are" from recent Disney. Disney executives need to give more creative freedom to their employees and hire actual musical theater song writers.
I'm glad you chose this
valid choices
Frollo was the monster and Quasimodo was the man
Please watch the sequel to this
If you want a dark movie you should watch The Black cauldron
Great movie 😊
After finishing reacting to MLP I recommend you to watch the show Miracous Ladybug properly, I guarantee you'll love it
This is the best Disney movie ever!!!
The makers of the film actually did want to make whether or not the gargoyles are “real” or in Quasi’s head ambiguous. The entire purpose of the gargoyles in the film is really to try and tone down the rest of the films darkness a tad and keep the kids engaged. when kids watch they take it at face value the gargoyles are real, but when adults watch they catch the hints that they are really figments of Quasi’s imagination. As for the ending it could be interpreted in a few ways, it could literally be an act of God using Notre Dame to smite the wicked Frollo, or the spout simply broke and the rest is in the imaginations Frollo/Quasi. Or it was Notre Dame the Cathedral itself casting down judgment, an awnser to the Eyes of Notre Dame watching in the beginning. Or the gargoyles are real, there’s no wrong answer really.
If you liked the movie I would check out the Joli Stage musical Production, which is based on the Disney movie, but is slightly more book accurate and even darker if you can believe it. The only thing about the stage production I disliked was they used a Greek Chorus kind of set up instead of having Clopin be the narrator which is honestly why I think they didn’t manage to go to broadway. Clopin being the narrator is just so integral, and way better, like come on no one wants a Greek chorus over a narrator. But I digress it’s still very good regardless.
Notre Dame is pronounced two different ways. The historic building in France is pronounced No-trah Dahm. The American college is pronounced No-ter Daym.
SPOILERS: LION KING, THE LITTLE MERMAID, SNOW WHITE, SLEEPING BEAUTY, MULAN, BEAUTY AND THE BEAST, PETER PAN***
Dude! They killed Scar in Lion King, Ursula in The Little Mermaid, the witch queen in Snow White, Maleficent in Sleeping Beauty, Shan Yu in Mulan, Gaston in Beauty and the Beast, Captain Hook in Peter Pan... Disney been killing villains lol
