Ah, really enjoyed this one. So you finally went Sony. Didn’t know that! I considered the A7III for a long time before finally ending up with an EOS RP-a decision I made mostly because I already have four Canon lenses.
It's tough work choosing a camera company! They are all more than adequate. I'm loving my A7sIII so far. More camera than I need, but so fun! I can boost the ISO settings to crazy amounts in my dark studio and still get usable footage. The autofocus is crazy good.
@@JonMeyer I know, right? The need for decent autofocus was the thing that convinced me to upgrade from my Canon 6D. The RP’s AF is also great, though I do sort of wish I’d sprung for the R instead of the RP. The RP basically doesn’t have 4K.
Thanks for laying out the real tradeoffs for the choices you have made. Way more valuable than some "tablets handed down from Mt. Arrarat" didactic video.
It was the look of your films that got me into your channel Jon, I used to be really into photography back when we used film. I just use my phone now as the quality has got so good. Maybe I'll get back into the photography world some time
Nice review! Fujifilm cameras are the unsung hero. Sony cameras continue dominating the market. Love those G Master lenses! For those on a budget Sony has a new Alpha ZV-E10 dropping soon that’s around $700 for the body. A few RUclipsrs have received and reviewed an early release version and it looks great.
This is great. Making vids is so fun and gratifying, and for those of us who've been at the music game for a while, it provides that "honeymoon" period of romance and excitement that happens when you first get into something. As with music, I'm finding the same axioms apply: whatever you use, learn and master it fully (aka buying new gear won't make you better). Use the limitations to your advantage. Your version of what's slightly effed up or "wrong" might just be your signature style/voice. After about 2 years or so, I'm still gloriously in my salad days with this. Sometimes I'll get a shot where I feel I just nailed it, but often it's pretty garbage, and another step toward mastery. I love it, the good and the bad. I'm also keeping in mind those moments when I'd do something in music because I actually didn't know what I was doing, but that sound ended up being interesting. I sometimes look at my awful shot and go "yea, it's technically poor, but it's interesting!". Caleb is awesome. I also love watching Peter McKinnon (who doesn't) for inspiration and positive encouragement, and Daniel Schiffer, who is a ninja master at handheld and super creative b-roll.
Thanks for sharing, Adrian! Great insight. I probably should have talked about other elements of filmmaking before addressing the camera, but they are so fun! The limitations of inexpensive gear an old tech absolutely makes us better decision makers and problem solvers.
Color is always a work in progress with me. The video I watched about color grading the night before is usually the approach I take. :) Recently I've been followed the advice of a RUclips named Danny Gevirtz. I highly recommend his channel. ruclips.net/video/xQ5LWaguI70/видео.html
Hey Jon, cool stuff again! i agree about what you're saying. Canon limitations for Video are a pain unless you invest in a "Cinema" cam. And those are probably not the best for filming yourself but man, they are amazing! Gerald Undone and DSLR Shooter are outstanding sources of info. I would also add "Potato Jet", he's great! Cheers!
Thanks Jon. I’m mostly a songwriter / composer & but after watching yours and mr Henson’s videos over the last year or so I have been inspired by your videos . Looking at cameras recently so this came at a good time. Thanks.
Thanks! Check the end of my studio tour video from a few weeks ago. I use an aputure LED panel and my computer screen with a text edit filling the screen. Out of the the frame in the back corner I have a light pointed at my head. Helps separate me from the background. It’s a Godox vl150 with a small aputure soft box.
Great video, Jon. I think as musicians we have also become filmmakers out of necessity. I still pull out the old 70D and the nifty fifty, but my iPhone has proven superior in many ways. The a7siii is a killer camera, especially when paired with a nice lens. I’m still hopeful Apple will develop bokeh video, until then, nothing can really compete with a nice mirrorless and fast lens. You made an excellent choice. Regardless, you make great videos no matter what you shoot on.
Thanks, Adrien. I'm always trying different things with the color. For the past few weeks I've been taking this approach...ruclips.net/video/xQ5LWaguI70/видео.html
I've got the ol' a6400 and specifically for the autofocus. Only bummer, AutoFocus is garbage when filming in LOG so I shoot in Cine4. That's the biggest draw back.
I actually enjoy you talking about this because of the video work on your channel. I have often wondered what you are using. It would be cool to hear more about your thought process on Paper Trail. Specifically what was in your mind as you shot that video footage and how those thoughts correlated to the music in your mind. Did the music come first and sync video in your mind or vice versa. Would be interesting to hear more. Thanks for sharing.
Yea, I might make a video on that in the future. The first 3 videos were song first. For the last video I shot the footage first, edited to a temp track, then scored it from start to finish.
Another great video Jon... and just as I'm just preparing to launch a RUclips channel (inspired in part by your good self over the last year) about music composition, sampling, orchestration and mixing etc... perfect timing! any thoughts on microphones when 'starting out' up to 'getting better'. I'm thinking about when you would use one type over another when shooting video and also positioning. Cheers, Dex
I use the Deity V-mic D3 pro in most situations. My studio is heavily treated so it sounds ok even if I'm a few feet away. When I need to be farther away from the mic I use the Rode Wireless Go mic.
I love the Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Cameras. I've used the 6k on multiple occasions and considered that over the a7siii. The image that comes out of that camera is remarkable. I decided having a flip screen, auto focus, stabilization and the ability to shoot in low light would better fit my style of shooting.
Peter Mckinnon told me to edit in HD! :) Shooting in 4k and editing in 1080p allows me to crop in and reframe my image, which is helpful as I often do not frame up a perfect image when working by myself. For RUclips videos viewed on phones or the average computer monitor, the difference between 1080p and 4k is minimal. I do agree that exporting in 4k makes a difference to the final image. Something about the way RUclips compresses the file.

Glad it helped, Declan!
Love these videos. Just found your channel. Lifelong musician. Super helpful content. Thank you.

This is so helpful, thanks so much addressing this topic!
You're so welcome, Aaron! I'll do my best to revisit the topic once everything is fully supported.

That's very kind, Jim. I'm committed to becoming a better photographer. Even though I have the equipment I've spent very little time taking stills.

Thank you Jon, very interesting and a pleasure to watch as always. I love the new look of the image with your new Sony fancy camera :-)
It really is a remarkable camera. Thanks for watching, Dominique!

Fantastic video Jon. As a Lumix G9 and G7 user myself, I'm considering an upgrade to a Sony system too... When I can afford it 😂

@@JonMeyer ah yes - reframing is very useful if you are the cameraman and the subject.
