I've been on FNF mailing lists for over a year now. These guys are small but serious business. They've been building up network coops in Kansas City MO for a while now, and getting involved with other meshnet groups around the world. Isaac, Tyrone, and Charles are super nice guys and definitely committed to this fight for the long haul. They've already built networks for a lot of underserved ppl and they're building more while developing FreedomStack at the same time. Well worth getting involved

"Zeal without knowledge is the sister of folly." (unk.) Much more important than figuring out how to seize control from the present order, is to understand what the alternative ought to be. Before assembling the telecommunications conducive to social action, it is much more important to understand what exactly it is that the action is supposed to be accomplishing. To achieve this, a good place to start is to embrace the principle that the most important voice to which to listen is not necessarily one's own. Understanding that, we should set out on a civilizational study, particularly the historical foundations of Western Civilization. What are the philosophical principles underlying, for example, the U. S. Constitution? To find out, we will probably have to actually read stuff written at that time and earlier. Upon doing so, we may discover that there are certain things that have escaped our attention. One example might be that the notion that the "means of information must be returned to the people" is not only unsupported by the Constitution, it is also a dangerous generalization that can lead to many bad outcomes. With respect to this issue, the key question that needs to be asked about the "new Internet of the people" is whether it creates an environment in which diverse, independent, self-selected, and unregulated media sources can publish freely, leading to a robust marketplace of ideas? Ripping the media out of the hands of corporations will by no means assure this, as has been abundantly demonstrated in Communist nations. With respect to this issue, a major distinction that needs to be made is the difference between content providers and bulk carriers. There may be something to be said for regulating, in certain ways, the bulk carriers in the manner of telephone companies and the Postal Service, but that must never be understood as treating content providers themselves as public utilities. As soon as that is done, the meddlesome reach of government or politically connected interest groups into what can be published and broadcast is unavoidable. The founders of America provided for "Post Offices and Post Roads" but made absolutely no provision for a Federal Press Commission that would guarantee to the people their "right" to be provided with and "adequate" information diet. There is no such thing as "the right of the people to receive" in the Constitution. The First Amendment is not for the purpose of guaranteeing the rights of the reader, but of the writer. A consequence of this, of course, is that even moneyed people and corporations may publish without restraint. But does not this imply the risk that what is published may be biased? Of course, but that is true no matter who publishes. Keep in mind also, that almost every endeavor involved in promoting any viewpoint will involve a corporation of some kind, even if it only a nonprofit corporation. The simpleminded statement that corporations should not be allowed to speak to public issues is altogether meritless.
On a somewhat different subject: When overthrowing the rule of the British monarchy in America, the Founders understood what a power structure could do. However, viewing the French Revolution, they also understood that turning control over to an illiterate mob would not be a good thing either. Being highly educated in the ways of statescraft and knowing much about the excesses and oppressions that had occurred in other countries, they carefully designed a system that was balanced so as to enable the compost pile to be churned while also protecting the security of people in their persons, property, and consciences. Therefore, rule became according to constitutional procedure rather than simply the popular whim of the moment.

Some may be hypocritically and flatly defiant against all corporations, but most are more specifically anti corrupt corporations. There are decent businesses out there that treat their people well and value civil rights, but the going trend is towards collapsing the good businesses into becoming less good or simply being bankrupted by the corrupt.
Run an honest business and there won't be any reason to protest them.
Should America be more honest, or less honest?

We cannot fix what is unfixable. Instead of trying to fix the problem we must deal with the problem and the only way to deal with the problem is to eliminate the problem. Our efforts to reason with the unreasonable will always lead to unreasonable outcomes. So many are quick to forget that we are nothing more than slaves and expect compassion and respect from our masters. We act surprised when our freedoms and rights as human beings are stripped away, totally unaware of our true role in this corrupt capitalist society. The only way to escape from slavery is to fight our way out of it. Freedom is something we will have to earn on a battleground called revolution. In a capitalist society anything worth having requires us to earn it. That includes freedom, comrades.

I can definitely get behind the Free Network Foundation though. It's sad just how few people know how easy it is to create a network. What you're paying for with the internet is to use someone else's cables, bandwidth, and hosts file. That hosts file additionally costs you around $10-$100 a year to rent a name from. Anyone can create a network. What's difficult is finding a way to get those networks to talk to each other across the globe, and I see the FNF's device as an incredible solution to this.

Free wifi with a bunch of hackers around.... That sounds like a really smart idea.

  • @JasperLawrence
    @JasperLawrence 12 лет назад

You simply need a means of connecting to the WAN, typically that would come from a WiMax wireless modem, so you need an account with Clearwire or similar. That is the wireless router mentioned. Then you simply need a way to break that connection up and redistribute it, typically using WiFi. So any WiFi switch capable of NAT and DHCP would do it. To get your signal further you would need specialised WiFi antennae and radios to give you range & handle large numbers of users. Then power, batteries.

How exactly is the freedom tower free? I'm guessing that at some point the freedom tower has to interface with a traditional network (until you build enough of them to cover a large enough area). If that's the case, it seems more like piracy than creating a truly "free" network, and the towers actually rely on paying subscribers to subsidize the free users. Am I wrong?

Although living off the grid or being indigent would be hard to take for most people, there are steps we can all do to minimise our contribution to a corrupt system. Paying off our debts to the banks and living within our means would be a good start. Pay off the balance of your credit card every month: the banks really hate that. I understand your anger, but resorting to violence only feeds the corruption. In The Light is truth and the truth sets you free.

I think the best that can be said here is that it's a good idea for citizens to take a more active role in control over IT infrastructure. You're never going to beat the economy of scale that the major telecom companies can provide, but you could be very valuable if you know what to do should the main infrastructure be compromised.

Think about it.... 200 years ago these kinda uprisings were done with guns, and you had results with less people. Now a million people just standing and shouting and no difference. Why? Because people feel all right. They're not being enslaved by big shots, big shots give them sedated enough lifestyle. For those who dont have sedated lifestyle, you just need to disorganize them and give them no reason to act.

Almost every guy on this sounds like a woman. When did talking like 12 year old preppy girls become so cool for grown men? Saying "like" 3-4 times per sentence, bobbing your head around, and using a questioning tone of voice no matter what you say is not how grown men should act.

The network wasn't distributed in the first place. The could have use 3-4 towers surrounding the park. Even in buildings around the park and other places. Plus hidden cams. Nowadays they could use drones (mini-blimps).

"fuck da police" is not about individual officers. many police officers are genuinely good people who volunteered to serve their communities. the attitude is more about a justice system that seems to be spreading injustice. the officers are just as much victims of the system as everyone else. its not like there is a huge conspiracy. we have inherited our grandparent's government. but currently politicians are in such gridlock that the system of checks and balances prevents progressive change.

Uhm, no. Actually, that was the first in which it was tested by. The ARPA had already developed a network before the first use of it at the Stanford Research Insitute. It was used, again, for communication and networking for the business of the USSR. Even one of the founding fathers stated it was for communication in business, whether it'd be for the military or a corp. Don't confuse the World Wide Web with the Internet.

interesting, this piece reminds me of the radio flyer "clipper chip" invention. My understanding is that it can communicate worldwide without satellite or cabling technology for a very low cost. I read an article on this technology in the early 2000's. My recollection is that the purchasers of this technology were government's and search and rescue organizations because not only can the chip communicate it can also identify a human being in sub surface locations. Truly, I'm a Luddite at this level of tech, but I have always found it interesting that this chip hasn't been much more broadly explored given its purported capacity.
