I enjoy hearing about the reasoning and purposes behind the various exercises and their variations. Along those lines, I know it is possible to bring head voice (can't help it, it's the way I think about how we sing in the various registers) down into lower register territory and push or bring chest voice up above the 2nd registration event ( note, I did not say 'break') Depending on the voice and the song, I see these as musical choices. Or, maybe, it's easier to change or not to change, again depending on the voice, the words or the phrase. However, what about vowel modification? In doing my exercises, I can feel the need to change the vowel coming before I reach the point where I do it. Or have to do it to keep a nice musical sound. But sometimes in a song, the note on which I make or start to make a gradual change in vowel sound, varies. Again , depending on the word, perhaps the phrase or tessitura. It also varies a bit depending on the vowel in these situations. So, am I correct in thinking all of these changes are done gradually ( more like a dimmer than an on-off switch) and that what one is singing alters this a bit? Very much like these question and answer sessions. Best wishes for continued success.

Thank you, David! Well said! If I understand correctly, yes, you are absolutely right. Vowel modifications, along with other changes that we can make, can be made for artistic reasons.
I would argue that that is the point of technique in general; to facilitate our artistry, as opposed to being an end unto itself.
That being said, the technique that I teach is meant to create a unified scale. One that sounds the same in tone from our lowest usable note to our highest.
If the song calls for it, though, we can always use our cricothyroid dominant singing voice (head voice - :-) ) a little lower; or use our thyroarytenoid dominant singing voice (chest voice) a little higher for effect. We'll pay a little price for doing those things, maybe in vowel alignment, tone quality, or intonation, but if the song demands it, then we can try to figure out the best option.

I have a question - How long does a warmup last? If I do my warmup exercises in the late morning/early afternoon but I'm not singing until evening - did my earlier warmups help or should I just wait until closer to the performance?

Wait until you’re closer. I believe you will only remain warmed up for 30min max but it will be easier to warm up again later.

Exactly. Warming up in the morning is great, but you'll have to warm up again if you're waiting that long.
